Robert Pattinson: Working With ‘Cosmopolis’ Director Was ‘A Relief’

Actor reveals how he prepared for his role in the David Cronenberg film at a Cannes Film Festival press conference. By Fallon Prinzivalli Robert Pattinson at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival Photo: AFP Director David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis” received mixed reviews after its debut at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival on Friday (May 25). Critics were split on whether they felt Robert Pattinson was right for the lead role. Some felt his performance was bland, but others thought he nailed the part, fitting well into the director’s vision. During a press conference for the film, Pattinson explained why he and Cronenberg work well together, chalking it up to Cronenberg’s careful direction. “If [a director’s] sitting on the set, a bunch of people will ask you questions all the time,” he said. “And then a lot of directors, I find, are kind of exhausted by the time they’re actually supposed to do their job with the actors. They’re not really listening anymore. I think David is listening so intently when you’re doing a scene. … When you feel something in a scene, you know that he’s seen it, which is such a relief. And it makes you actually pay attention to what you’re doing as well.” Cronenberg also made Pattinson aware of different camera angles and how the placement of cameras can greatly affect his performance. “I think a lot of directors and actors refuse to accept anything about camera technique,” Pattinson continued. “[Cronenberg was] completely frank about it and [said], ‘Listen, if I put a camera here, it’s going to totally affect the way you perform.’ And it really did, the blocking was like direction, which I never really experienced before.” “Cosmopolis” follows Eric Packer (Pattinson) in a futuristic New York City. As he’s chauffeured through Manhattan on his way to get a haircut, the world is falling apart around him — protestors are rioting, his marriage is failing, his vast financial status is declining and he soon discovers clues that reveal an attempt on his life. When asked how he prepared for the taxing role, Pattinson told the audience he spent a lot of the time concerned over how his performance would come together. “I kind of spent two weeks in my hotel room worrying and confusing myself. And I remember the weekend before shooting, I called David — because we had no rehearsals — to talk to him about it. [I said,] ‘I just wanted to sort of ask one question,’ ” he recalled, mimicking his timid tone. “He said, ‘Do you want to talk about the movie for a second?’ So I went to his house and I think he just said that it doesn’t really matter: ‘Let’s just start and something will happen.’ ” Worrying aside, Pattinson found a way to bring his character to life. He didn’t improvise scenes and he didn’t change any of the lines. He stuck to the script and followed Cronenberg’s vision for his character as it was laid out in front of him. “I think [Eric Packer’s] impossible to approach like you would a normal character,” he said. “What I liked about the script initially was its lyricism and just the rhythms of it. Normally when you do a movie, you can kind of blur the lines and make it your own. But with this, I didn’t want to change a single word, even the punctuation. That made it easier, it’s like you’re doing a song instead of a movie. It freed you up. If you’re trying to do something in a cerebral way, it becomes about ego and it’s silly at that point.” Did Pattinson find similarities between himself and his character? “I do think people are trying to kill me all the time,” he joked. Travis Porter Feel The Pressure Of Releasing Debut Album

‘I think it’s good just to get the first debut album out the way and you can progress to your next album,” Quez tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Travis Porter has a busy summer ahead of them. With their debut album, From Day 1, set to drop on May 29, the Atlanta trio are also hitting the road on tour and getting ready to release a new film. Quez, Strap and Ali first started to make noise in 2008, and after waiting four years to drop their first LP, the group is pretty anxious to put their plans in motion. “I think it’s good just to get the first debut album out the way and you can progress to your next album,” Quez said when the group appeared on “RapFix Live” on Wednesday. “It’s a nervous feelin’,” Ali said of the days leading up to their release. One of the pressures of releasing a major-label album is having to meet certain sales figures, particularly during the first week of an album’s release. “It’s a lot of pressure working on your first album, leading up to the release,” Strap said. “But we had so much fun putting the work into this album, being so creative, I feel like we won’t have nothin’ to worry about.” All things considered, though, the group is just thrilled to be able to see their hard work begin to pay off in a major way. After the album drops, they’ll hit the road on the No Sleep Till Atlanta Tour — a nod to their admiration for the Beastie Boys , who in 1986 released the classic track “No Sleep Till Brooklyn.” Travis Porter is also looking to release an unnamed film on June 29. The movie finds Travis Porter on the road living the rapper life. That is until they run into a bit of trouble. “The bus breaks down in some crazy town called Red Rock. And it’s run by these drug lords and they try to kill us off before we get out of their town because they think we gonna tell what’s goin on in the town,” Ali explained of the story’s plot. “So we gotta fight our way out of the town.” Are you planning to buy Travis Porter’s debut, From Day 1 ? Justin Bieber Teases Next Believe Single

During ‘MTV First: Justin Bieber,’ pop star says ‘As Long As You Love Me’ could be the next track to hit radio. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News Justin Bieber is still riding high off the release of his new video for “Boyfriend.” But with the release of his next album, Believe, not too far off, Bieber told MTV News that fans might get the chance to hear more from the June 19 release sooner rather than later. “Why did I choose ‘Boyfriend’ [for my first single]? I just thought it was … a song that most represented me at the time and what I wanted to put out there, ” he told Sway during “MTV First: Justin Bieber” on Thursday night (May 3). “It’s crazy, because even my next single after that is going to be better.” Bieber didn’t want to give out too many details about this even better next track, but he did reveal that the title recalls the title of a certain hit by ’90s teen idols the Backstreet Boys. “My next single, I don’t have it completely set. … I think it’s ‘As Long As You Love Me.’ It’s midtempo,” Bieber said. “I think it’s edgy.” With no exact details on when fans might get to hear the song, he dished that a song he wrote for his mother, Pattie Mallette, could drop on May 13, whether or not it makes the album. “I wrote a song for my mom. But I’m going to put it out on Mother’s Day,” he said, explaining why Mama Mallette was worthy of her own track, “[It’s] about the struggles, I say in the song. She had me at like the age I am now. [It’s about] just the struggles she went through and how brave she was, and I think the world needed to know that.” What did you think of the “Boyfriend” video? Share your reviews in the comments! Kazakhstan Officials Praise Borat as Tourist Bonanza

While officials in Kazakhstan were initially perturbed by Borat and the adventures of Sacha Baron Cohen’s Kazakh journalist in America, now one leader has thanked the filmmakers for a subsequent boost in tourism to the former Soviet republic. “With the release of this film, the number of visas issued by Kazakhstan grew tenfold,” Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov told the nation’s parliament. “I am grateful to Borat for helping attract tourists to Kazakhstan.” Very nice!
