Why the Lost Epilogue Doesn’t Ruin the Show

The complete sixth season of Lost hits DVD and Blu-ray today, meaning critics, haters and contrarians alike can have another shot at the series and its controversial finale. Stoking that flame is the pièce de résistance of the release, a 12-minute series epilogue titled “The New Man in Charge” that leaked earlier this month . The epilogue is receiving a certain amount of flack while simultaneously being derided by as possibly “ruining” the series. Which would be true except for the fact that it’s not.

Ohio Dems Try to Revive Debunked Smear Against Hannity-backed Charity

The Democratic Party of Ohio has recycled a thoroughly debunked smear against Fox News host Sean Hannity and Freedom Alliance, a charity he works with regularly that raises money to educate the children of American servicemen. A release  from the Ohio Dems claimed that Rep. John Kasich, Republican candidate for governor, “promote[d] Hannity’s scandal-ridden ‘Freedom Alliance’ concerts that are under investigation for misappropriating charitable donations.” The Ohio Dems cited a complaint by the technically non-partisan, but ideologically liberal group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. CREW claimed that the charity, Freedom Alliance, had “awarded $2,147,750 in scholarships,” only half of what they spent on salaries, and a quarter of what they spent on shipping expenses, according to their complaint to the Federal Trade Commission. But this line of attack on Freedom Alliance is bogus. CREW fails to note that since most servicemen are relatively young, most of money Freedom Alliance raises is put in a trust fund until soldiers’ children are old enough to take advantage of it. Hence, while the charity raised roughly $2.1 million for scholarships in 2008 alone, according to its 990 form ( pdf ), it only spent about $800,000 that year, putting the rest into the trust. CREW’s claim that the charity only spent $2.1 million on scholarships over five years is disingenuous. While the number is technically correct, the scholarship fund contained $15,919,391 as of 2008, according to the 990 linked above, all slated to be spent on educating the children of servicemen when they reach the appropriate age. Jon Soltz, chairman of the left-wing advocacy group VoteVets.org, which according to Politico “is backing CREW,” claimed “80 to 90 percent” of funds raised should benefit veterans and their families. But there is no indicator that Soltz was referring to any funds other than the money spent directly on scholarships the year they were raised. As noted above, that number does not tell the full story. Also noted in the Democratic release is Freedom Alliance’s “F” rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy. But the release does not delve into AIP’s criteria for that grade. According to the organization’s website , top-rated charities “generally spend 75% or more of their budgets on programs, spend $25 or less to raise $100 in public support, do not hold excessive assets in reserve, and receive ‘open-book’ status for disclosure of basic financial information and documents to AIP.” Accorfing to its 990 form for 2007 (the year it got that rating, according to the release – pdf ), Freedom Alliance spent $1,011,501 on fundraising, and raised $10,762,256 in public support. That means it spent less than $10 on fundraising for each $100 it raised, well below the $25 threshold set by AIP. Of Freedom Alliance’s $7,461,350 budget that year, $6,084,474, or roughly 81.5 percent, was spent on programs. The remaining two criteria – a charity’s open-book status and the size of its reserves – are the only factors that could have earned it the “F” rating. But as discussed above, Freedom Alliance keeps massive reserves (compared to the amount it pays out annually) so that it can afford to pay for scholarships when the young children of currently twenty-something servicemen come of age (the average soldier is in his mid-twenties). So either the nature of the Freedom Alliance charity earned it the “F” rating – a completely benevolent reason – or AIP does not enjoy “open-book” status with it (or both). In any case, it hardly seems that Freedom Alliance is deserving of the “scandal-ridden” label given it in the Ohio Democrats’ release. In all, the release contains nothing more than baseless accusations against Hannity and Freedom Alliance. The Democratic Party is apparently trying to revive it in an effort to damage a political opponent. It’s a shame that Hannity and Freedom Alliance are caught in the middle of this political game.

Mel Gibson Berates His Ex, Uses Racial Slur On Another Leaked Tape

Friend tells People magazine that troubled actor has been in therapy. By Gil Kaufman Mel Gibson Photo: Toby Canham/ Getty Images Yet another snippet of tape has emerged in which Mel Gibson is heard berating his ex-girlfriend with a breathless string of expletives and racist and sexist taunts. So far, the Academy Award-winning actor/director’s spokesperson has offered a terse “no comment” on the rants — though he has not denied that it’s his client’s voice on the tapes — and Gibson has made no statements. Speaking to People magazine, an unidentified friend of Gibson’s said the relationship with ex Oksana Grigorieva, mother of the couple’s 8-month old daughter, got so bad earlier this year that the “Lethal Weapon” star sought professional help. “He realized how unhealthy the relationship was and recognized that they were in a bad place and he was getting his buttons pushed,” the friend told the magazine about Gibson’s reported efforts to seek therapy. Gibson, who has openly struggled with alcoholism during his career, “wanted to figure out how to extricate himself from this unhealthy relationship peacefully and calmly. Which is what he did.” It’s unclear if the move came before or after the recordings were made, but in the excerpts released so far, Gibson is heard viciously excoriating Grigorieva, showering her with a string of foul and violent language, including apparent threats on her life and a seeming admission that he physically attacked her. Police in Los Angeles have opened a domestic-violence investigation into an alleged incident in January, in which Gibson is reported to have struck Grigorieva, knocking out several teeth. TMZ reported Tuesday (July 13) that the star witness in a possible domestic-violence trial could be Grigorieva’s dentist, Dr. Ross Shelden. Unnamed sources familiar with Grigorieva’s treatment claim Shelden took photos of her mouth the day after the couple’s alleged January fight and that the images have been turned over to her attorney, though he did not report the incident to police at the time because Grigorieva asked him to keep it confidential. Though Gibson’s side has allegedly claimed that Grigorieva simply lost her veneers, her camp says Shelden’s conclusion was that she lost one tooth and had another one chipped. A source told People magazine that the phone arguments were recorded in February, not long after the alleged January incident. The couple reportedly split around March, and People reported that a custody settlement, which Gibson’s lawyer described as “very generous” with an eventual 50/50 custody split, was signed in May. But Grigorieva, 40, has alleged that the payments have stopped coming recently. After a tape emerged Monday in which Gibson appears to threaten Grigorieva’s life — leaked just days after he was dropped by his longtime talent agency — the new six-minute recording Radar Online posted Tuesday finds the couple fighting over a Latina housekeeper, whom Gibson, 54, refers to with the racist epithet “wetback.” The latest ethnic slur comes on the back of earlier recordings in which Gibson used the word “n—er.” The couple appear to be sparring over a housekeeper who works at both their homes, with Grigorieva claiming she needs extra help because of the baby. Gibson refuses, saying, “I will fire [name omitted] if she’s at your house. I will make it known and fire her. I’ll report her to the f—ing people that take f—ing money from the wetbacks, OK?” While Grigorieva repeatedly denies Gibson’s claims that she’s a gold digger, at one point the divorced actor — who is reported to have made tens of millions or more from his self-financed film “The Passion of the Christ” — screams, “I’m paying my tax money instead of the credit card [bill]. Don’t you get it?” The aspiring Russian singer, whose career was reportedly fueled in part by Gibson’s money, also complains of financial problems, telling her ex, “You made me moneyless. … I used to have $100,000 a year when you met me. You took me, you possessed me, everything I am. You own me, with my liver and my kidneys and my thoughts and my soul. Everything! My career, whatever it is. Pathetic career. Whatever it is, it’s yours. You control me like marionette. I don’t belong to myself, only to you. I can’t do anything, and I walk on eggshells always with you!” He responds, “That’s because you’re a f—ing using whore! Now, I own you.” The staunchly Catholic actor later accuses Grigorieva of cheating on him during their three-year relationship; Gibson’s wife of nearly 30 years filed for divorce from him last year. Grigorieva tells him he’s mentally ill and that she knows she has no claim to his fortune. “I’m not the whore and I’m not the bitch and I’m not the cu– and I’m not the user and I’m not the thief and all those words,” she says. “And I’m not a liar. All this, all this lies. All this lies. I’m not a whore or cu– or thief or prostitute or anything that you call me. I’m not a user. I’m not a gold digger. I don’t have any money and no property assigned to me. That’s a gold digger for you? Are you insane? Yes, you are, of course. We can hear that, because you’re screaming.”

Ex Russian Spy From Peru to get $2000 a Month for Life

Spy for Russia, get caught, and get paid $2000 a month for life. Some would say that this is not justice served in the face of laughing in the face of National Security. In a rapidly arranged spy swap, the U.S. government agreed Thursday to send Russia 10 agents who had burrowed into American society — two of them in Seattle — and in return won the release of four jailed Russians accused of passing information to the West. The 10 agents, who pleaded guilty Thursday to acting as unregistered foreign agents, were deported hours later. They had endured only a few days in jail since their arrests in the United States last month. In previous cases, spies spent years behind bars before being exchanged. U.S. officials said there was no point in holding the Russian agents, since authorities had monitored their activities for years and had unraveled their network. Obama administration officials said they had been eager to win the release of the four Russians, some of whom had spent long stretches in prison and were in poor health. The deal was expected to remove an irritant from the U.S.-Russian relationship, which has improved markedly under the Obama administration. But one senior administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, acknowledged that “vestiges of an old Russia” were evident in the case. “Frankly, that's why we were as aggressive in rolling up this operation as we were,” the official said. Peruvian-born Vicky Pelaez, the only non-Russian among the agents, began crying after she saw a loved one among the onlookers. Anna Chapman, the Russian diplomat's daughter whose photos have become an Internet sensation, played with her red hair. Most of the others were stony-faced. Pelaez's attorney, John Rodriguez, said a private plane had been expected to take the 10 to Russia. He said his client had been given only 24 hours to say yes or no to the “all or nothing” deal for deportation. He said in court that the Russian government had promised Pelaez $2,000 a month for life, housing and documents to allow her children to visit Russia and have all their expenses paid. She decided to go home to her native Peru instead. Peru's foreign minister, Jose Antonio Garcia, said Pelaez had committed no crime in her homeland and would be “received like any other Peruvian citizen.” http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Gl2yhEUbdg8/Sm-clhCBaWI/AAAAAAAAGlo/SWO2V_FeOkY/s400/d… added by: jubal

If it looks like a virgin……

This is a new one for the justice system, and apparently for Vietnam. Three convicted rapists in Hanoi, Vietnam have been freed based upon their looks. A female acupuncturist Pham Thi Hong is becoming a local celebrity in Vietnam because she is praised with getting the men released. She claims that the men are 100% innocent because of a red dot on their ear’s. She believes that if they were to have had sex; the dot would have disappeared. The men were tried and convicted of gang raping a 20 year old woman in 2000. She claims she first saw the dot on one of the men in a Hanoi prison while giving him acupuncture, and decided to look at the 2 other men. Upon her finding the other men had the same red dot, she started advocating for their release; even threatening to set herself ablaze. The President of Vietnam finally demanded that the case be re-opened, and during the new investigation investigators found that the initial investigators made mistakes. So because of an acupuncturist who spotted a red “virgin” dot on the ears of the men, they have since been freed. We have the saying only in Vegas, but in this instance it’s, only in Vietnam. thanks to: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38051788/ added by: Colin_McCabe

Drake Show Shut Down By NYPD

‘I am humbled by the crowd that showed up in support of my performance,’ rapper tells MTV News in a statement. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Rahman Dukes/MTV News NEW YORK — A Drake show scheduled for Tuesday evening (June 15) in Manhattan was canceled by the New York Police Department after crowd control became a safety concern for organizers of the event. Upward of 10, 000 fans lined the South Street Seaport and even more were present on the outskirts of the venue, lurking, in hopes of spotting the Toronto rapper. Drake was set to appear onstage at 7:45 p.m. ET, but leading up to his appearance, the crowd swelled to a larger-than-expected size. Organizers of the event, sponsored by Paper magazine and also featuring Hanson and Ninjasonik, began slowly asking attendees to be prepared for a cancellation. Confusion abounded just moments later, however, as concertgoers jockeyed for closer positions to the stage, unaware of any danger. Ultimately, police pulled the plug on the event and began trying to disperse bystanders. Drake — celebrating the release of his debut album, Thank Me Later, on Tuesday — tried to notify his fans via Twitter that he was unable to take the stage. “Police are shutting down the show at South Seaport! I’m on my way anyways,” he wrote. “Drizzy Hendrix Woodstock 2010.” The upstart MC, though, was understandably disappointed he was unable to share in the excitement with his fans and issued a statement apologizing to his fans. “I am humbled by the crowd that showed up in support of my performance and the release of Thank Me Later, ” Drake told MTV News in a statement. “I love performing for my fans, but unfortunately, the show was canceled by the NYPD due to overcrowding, leaving me without the chance to give my fans a real show. I’m thankful for the support that the fans have been giving me … I thank you now.” Fans were also disappointed, but many feared for their own safety as people fought, threw items from nearby restaurants and even trampled other attendees. New York University student Adam Vinson spoke with MTV News and described the chaotic scene. “People didn’t know how to have manners,” he said. “Everyone was up against each other pushing. There was just too many people there. In New York City, though, people are gonna come from out of state, and in the city, there’s already millions of people. The concert goers packed and people started fighting. “I saw dudes fighting,” he added. “One dude said he was gonna light this place up; it was that serious. Once I saw that, it was my cue to leave. People started pushing, bottles were thrown and once dude threatened to shoot, people started trying to get out.” What would you do in that situation? Let us know in the comments.
