Mildred Pierce Is the Film Event of the Year So Far — And It’s on HBO

To my previous rule of “Only Remake Bad Movies, Not Good Ones,” let me add the codicil, “But It’s OK to Remake Good Ones If the Original Strayed from the Source Material.” Because that’s what Todd Haynes does in his breathtaking five-part HBO adaptation of James M. Cain’s Mildred Pierce (premiering this Sunday, March 27). Rather than try to summon the magic that made the 1945 version so memorable (Joan Crawford won a well-deserved Oscar in the title role), Haynes goes back to the original Cain novel to tell a story that fans of the original movie know only in bits and pieces.

Just Go with Tit!

Just Go with It hits theaters this weekend but when it comes to Jennifer Aniston, you can just go with tit… and butt. On Blu-Ray, Pam Anderson bares huge mamdersons in Barb Wire, while I Spit on Your Grave (the original and the remake) are smoking hot with naked revenge.

Rosamund Pike Will Make Your Pike Titanic in Wrath of the Titans

Following her naked performance in the acclaimed drama Barney’s Version , UK knockout and former Bond girl Rosamund Pike has announced that she will be joining the cast of Wrath of the Titans , the sequel to the 2010 mythological epic Clash of the Titans . With Alexa Davalos dropping out of the sequel, the role of Hellenic hottie Andromeda opened up and Rosamund jumped at the chance, soregoing her opportunity to appear in the Superman reboot. The 2010 version was non-nude, but the original Clash of the Titans featured a fantastic look at the bare butt and side-boob of Andromeda (played by Judi Bowker ) getting out of the bath. Let’s hope that Rosamund’s portrayal of the mythical heroine is more on an 80’s throwback(-side) than Alexa’s was.

An Eclectic Cast Plays Russian Roulette in the 13 Trailer

Watching the trailer for this American remake of the nifty minimalist French thriller 13 Tzameti is a bit frustrating. It looks remarkably similar to the original film, and the fact that Géla Babluani directed both versions only adds to my suspicion that this remake is unnecessary and probably kind of dull. But then there’s the cast. And the fact that watching Mickey Rourke, 50 Cent, Sam Riley and Jason Statham play Russian Roulette under Michael Shannon’s supervision may actually be enough to get me to watch the same movie again.

Stranger in a Strange Land: Excellent Trailer for Claire Denis’ White Material Arrives

Stories about about families trying to protect their farm or home from insurmountable outside forces have been told quite a few times. Usually they involve money or maybe some corporation or rival family (if we’re talking Westerns). But in Claire Denis’ The White Material , Isabelle Huppert must contend with post-colonialism and civil war turmoil in modern Africa to save her coffee plantation. And yeah, as this trailer suggests, things get a little more complicated.

Jason Statham and Ben Foster Fix Almost Everybody in The Mechanic Trailer

Of course by “fix,” I actually mean kill…with assault rifles, cars crashed through buses and more. Yep, it’s the trailer for the remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson movie that involves an ace hitman (Jason Statham in this case) who takes on an apprentice (Ben Foster) with with quite a bit of reluctance. That is, until their company betrays them and kills Statham’s friend and Foster’s father; then it’s time for the two to put their differences aside, grab their tools (read: guns) and go to work.

Major Theater Chain Breaks ‘No Unrated Films’ Policy This October

In an unprecedented move, AMC theaters have agreed to play the unrated version of Hatchet 2 this October, breaking with the chain’s long-running refusal to play NC-17 or unrated films. A week later the remake of I Spit on Your Grave will also go out unrated. Until now, major movie theater chains haven’t budged on this policy, which meant that studios for the most part refused to fund movies that might not get an R-rating. Could this move usher in a new era where American filmmakers aren’t afraid to make explicit movies for adults?

VIDEO: Can Let Me In Have it Both Ways With Fanboys and Film Snobs Alike?

Overture has released another clip for Let Me In , the remake of the artful Swedish vampire film Let the Right One In . Here, it looks like they’re trying to win over fans of the original (who are understandably skeptical), while a previously released clip catered to the larger group of Americans who care more about vampire action than foreign films. But can Overture really please everyone?
