Civil Union Law A Welcome Change for LGBT Locals In Glenview

Until a few days ago, Denise White was fighting two battles. White, who has breast cancer and raises her four daughters with a same-sex partner in Glenview, worried about the guardianship of her daughters should she pass away. Although White and her partner raise White's daughters jointly, her partner did not have the same rights to guardianship—or to make decisions regarding medical treatment— as a legally married couple. That was before the Dec. 1 passage of the Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act by state lawmakers, explained Barbara Schon-Lundberg, a local LGBT rights activist. The bill—which passed 61-52 in the House of Representatives Tuesday and 32-24 in the state Senate Wednesday—now awaits Gov. Pat Quinn's signature. The act is a step in the right direction, Schon-Lundberd said. The purpose of the law, which grants extended rights to both homosexual and heterosexual couples joined in civil unions, is to certify and register these unions and “provide persons entering into a civil union with the obligations, responsibilities, protections and benefits afforded or recognized by the law of Illinois to spouses,” according to the law's text. Schon-Lundberg is president of the PFLAG Council of Northern Illinois. PFLAG, which stands for Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, has 26 members in Glenview, said Schon-Lundberg, who also lives in the village. “It's something we've been waiting for,” she added. “We want marriage equality, but this is a good step.” Schon-Lundberg has been involved in PFLAG for the past nine years, after she became active in the organization to support her gay brother. She has been editor of the organization's newsletter, Open Doors, and said she doesn't get much opposition to her work from village residents. Her job is to advocate for and protect people like White and her partner, she said. “…There's still a lot of work to be done [to legalize gay marriage] and it will take time, but the tide is turning. There is growing support all the time.” added by: TimALoftis

Should Obama grant clemency to Jonathan Pollard?

In a letter dated November 18th, 2010 addressed to US President Obama and signed by more than 30 democratic members of the House of Representatives, clemency is being sought for accused and confessed spy Jonathan Pollard. The letter arrived yesterday in an email from the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs accompanied by background information on the Pollard case. According to the WRMEA, this letter was initiated by Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) in coordination with the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, National Council of Young Israel, B'nai B''''rith International, the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, the Zionist Organization of America, Agudath Israel, and former presidential candidate Gary Bauer, a Christian Zionist whose non-profit organization “American Values” seems to be more concerned with Israel than the United States. added by: Aimee_Kligman

Linkin Park Bring A Thousand Suns To Life In New York

Band plays first show in nearly two years hours after new album hit stores. By James Montgomery Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington performs at Best Buy Theater on Tuesday Photo: Cory Schwartz/ Getty Images Over the past few months, or really, years, Linkin Park fans have been subjected to an unending stream of talk that the band’s new album would be a departure from their hard-riffing roots, instead forging heady, darn-near conceptual new territory from which there was no return. Early reviews of A Thousand Suns only seemed to confirm all that chatter, and it appeared that the Linkin Park of old was gone forever, that the once-snarling Dobermans had been replaced with a group of bespectacled Mr. Peabodys . And this was not good. But those fears can be put to rest. Because on Tuesday night — hours after that new album, A Thousand Suns, hit stores — Linkin Park played their first show in nearly two years (or, as Chester Bennington put it, “two f—ing years”) at the Best Buy Theater in New York. And though the tickets for the show prominently displayed the new album’s name, there was little of its calculated, claustrophobic conceptualism on display. Rather, this was a balls-out rock show, with some rapping and electronic frippery thrown in for additional impact. Or, in other words, it was just like a Linkin Park show of old. In fact, the band played just a handful of tracks from A Thousand Suns, peppering them in throughout a hit-packed, pummeling set. They opened with “The Requiem,” the first track on the album, which featured Mike Shinoda and DJ Joseph Hahn lit in moody silhouette, the former hunched over a synthesizer, repeating — in robo-coated vocals — the de facto mantra of Suns (“God bless us everyone/ We’re a broken people living under loaded gun”) with the latter providing ethereal harmonies. That washed into the sampled Robert Oppenheimer speech from the album, and then, the band now at full force, LP backtracked gloriously, hammering through older tracks like “New Divide,” “Faint,” “No More Sorrow” and “Given Up.” Those were met with thunderous cheers and a sea of fists thrust skyward, and with enough goodwill built up, the band worked the second Suns track into the set, the booming, rattling “Wretches and Kings,” which saw Shinoda and Bennington trade vocals and had the audience nodding along to the gut-punching beat. After a quick “thank you” — their first words to the audience all night — LP threw themselves into “Numb,” and then slowed things down exponentially with another new tune, “Iridescent,” which built slowly and solemnly on a Shinoda-played piano line and was met with a mixture of rapt attention and angry indifference, though most of that came from the tank-top-and-backward-ball-cap aggro set (and, it should be noted, the song climaxed pretty amazingly, with the band going five-wide on the chorus and the guitars soaring to the ceiling). The rest of the set played out in much that same fashion: The older stuff pummeled, peaked and powered (“Numb,” “Bleed It Out,” “In the End”), the new songs soared and stuttered and, yes, slightly mystified (“Burning in the Skies,” “Waiting for the End”), and it was pretty clear that A Thousand Suns was probably going to take a while to win some of the fans over. But, as Shinoda told MTV News last weekend, that’s sort of the point, really. And, perhaps to soothe those still hoping for a return to their Hybrid Theory days, Linkin Park opened their encore with current single “The Catalyst,” which, on this night, was cranked to the max and actually featured a good deal of chugging guitars (Bennington sang the hell out of it too). And then they closed with “What I’ve Done,” the first single off their last album that ticked off fans, Minutes to Midnight. And it’s worth noting that, in the three years since it was released, something rather amazing has happened to the song: It’s become a fan favorite, ranking right up there with their earlier, snarling stuff. There probably wasn’t intent behind the decision to close with it, but it’s not too hard to make the logical leap: Give the new songs time too, and see what happens. Patience is a virtue, after all. Lady Gaga Gets ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Tweet From Senate Leader

Senator Harry Reid promised a vote next week to repeal the policy banning gays in the military. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Paul Morigi/ WireImage In addition to setting the fashion world on fire with her meat dress and plowing down some records on her way to eight VMA wins on Sunday night, Lady Gaga also got some serious legislative business done. The singer, who marched down the white carpet with four representatives of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network — an organization working for the repeal of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy — made a point at the show and on her official website of urging her Little Monsters to tell Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that they wanted the Senate to vote for a repeal of the measure soon. Well, on Tuesday, Reid answered Gaga’s call, tweeting , “There is a vote on #DADT next week. Anyone qualified to serve this country should be allowed to do so http://bit.ly/9ucdIj #nvsen.” An ecstatic Gaga responded a short time later. “God Bless and Thank you @HarryReid, from all of us, like u, who believe in equality and the dream of this country. We were #BORNTHISWAY,” she wrote , cleverly adding a link to the trending topic based on the title of her upcoming album. On the Nevada senator’s website , a Reid staffer further explained the decision to bring the “Don’t Ask” vote next week. “Senator Reid has reiterated his commitment to repealing the military’s ban on gays serving in our armed forces” Megan Jones wrote. “This afternoon, he informed Republicans that he intends to bring the Defense Authorization Bil — including the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy — to the Senate Floor next week. This would overturn the decade-old policy that bars openly gay, lesbian or bisexual Americans from serving in our armed forces, and is an important step towards equal treatment of all Americans. Senator Reid believes that Americans should not be denied the opportunity to serve their country just because of their sexual orientation.” The victory was also celebrated by SLDN , which continued to urge Gaga fans on Tuesday to call the Capitol switchboard to voice their opinion on the vote. David Hall, one of the SLDN staffers who accompanied Gaga on the white carpet, told MTV News that it is critical that the Senate vote on the measure before senators leave for the election recess because if Democrats lose control of the House, Senate, or both in the upcoming midterm elections, the “Don’t Ask” repeal could be postponed, or killed by the new Republican leadership. Hall applauded Gaga’s decision to use the VMA platform to publicize the attempt to push for the repeal of “Don’t Ask,” a commitment President Obama made during his campaign and which he has said repeatedly is his goal. Though President Bill Clinton had campaigned on the promise to allow anyone to serve in the military regardless of sexual orientation, the DADT policy was implemented in 1993 as a comprise gesture with Congress. It bars military officials from asking service members to reveal their sexual orientation, but also mandates that they could be discharged for offering the information themselves. It has long been criticized by the LGBT community over claims that it has led to harassment of service members, investigations based on rumors and a double standard in the military’s code of honesty and integrity. To date, more than 14,000 service members have been fired under the rule. Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

Chris Brown ‘Jumped’ On ‘Make A Movie,’ Twista Says

‘It’s sexy to the people,’ Twista tells MTV News of Perfect Storm single. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Matt Elias Twista Photo: MTV News Twista might be known more for his tongue-twisting rhymes than his sexier fare, but the veteran MC has scored big hits in the past with crooners like Trey Songz and Jamie Foxx. Now, the Chicago star has recruited Chris Brown for his latest, “Make a Movie,” the lead single from his forthcoming effort, The Perfect Storm. He said landing Brown was a matter of mutual respect. “It was just a groove that I really felt, the whole vibe of the song,” Twista told MTV News. “It was something that fit the criteria of what I wanted to come with as far as my next single, as far as me making the sexy jams and being able to come like that. So when I heard the song, I knew it was a jam we could really work with. By the time it came around to get Chris Brown on it, I was like, ‘Man, we got to put the homie Chris on it.’ ” According to Twista, he and his camp made a few calls to Brown and his representatives to gauge their interest. It didn’t take long for Team Breezy to get back to the rapper. And to hear Twista explain it, both sides knew they had something on their hands with “Make a Movie.” “When he heard the song, he immediately jumped on it, as far as the mutual respect he had for me,” Twista said. “When I got it back, I listened to it one time, and we knew it was a wrap. We knew we had to roll with it, because it was a jam. It’s sexy to the people. Whenever we play it for different people we try to catch a vibe from, they always like it, so I knew it was the one for me.” What do you think of Twista teaming up with Chris Brown? On Page One, N.Y. Times Plays Up Sharron Angle’s ‘Awkward Retreats’ from ‘Hardline Positions’

Following in the footsteps of The Washington Post , Wednesday’s New York Times put Sharron Angle on the front page, pushing strongly on Harry Reid’s notion that her extremism and ineptitude are working in Reid’s favor. Reporter Adam Nagourney played up Republican pessimism:  Since Ms. Angle won, her campaign has been rocked by a series of politically intemperate remarks and awkward efforts to retreat from hard-line positions she has embraced in the past, like phasing out Social Security. There have also been a staff shake-up and run-ins with Nevada journalists, including one in which a television reporter chased her through a parking lot trying to get her to answer a question. Republicans in this state are concerned that what had once seemed a relatively easy victory is suddenly in doubt, with signs that Ms. Angle’s campaign is scrambling to regroup. “Reid had no chance to win before,” said Danny Tarkanian, one of the Republicans who lost to Ms. Angle. “He has a shot to win now. He could still lose, but I have to say he is favored.” Nagourney does not suggest “Landslide Harry” is a terrific candidate. He makes it clear that the Democrats need an anti-Angle vote to win:  If Mr. Reid is doing better than he once was, it is still relative; he is a politician in deep trouble. A Mason-Dixon poll last week found that 51 percent of Nevadans held an unfavorable opinion of him, a toxic number for an incumbent. That poll found Mr. Reid and Ms. Angle in an effective tie. “I’ll say this about Angle: I still think when we get to the end, it’s still going to be about Harry Reid and whether Nevada voters want to get rid of him and send a message to Washington,” said Brad Coker, managing director of Mason-Dixon. “They may still hold their nose and vote for Sharron Angle even if they don’t agree with a lot of things that she says and does.” Mr. Reid’s advisers made clear that the only way they could win was to make Ms. Angle so distasteful to Nevada voters that they would vote for Mr. Reid or someone else — it is possible here to vote for “none of the above” — or stay home. “I’m not discounting her,” Mr. Reid said. “In the spite of the work we’ve done, people need to understand more about her. There are some unusual stands she has.” But Nagourney’s story makes no serious attempt to understand the “why” of Reid’s unpopularity — particularly as Reid wants to note the other candidate’s hardline ideological stands and gaffes. Nagourney avoids Reid’s list, like Reid declaring it should be impossible to be both Hispanic and Republican — the Times continues to avoid that gaffe completely. There’s no mention of Reid’s gaffes about how Obama won election because he was a “light-skinned black” with “no Negro dialect.” There’s no mention of Reid claiming the war in Iraq was “lost” and the surge accomplished nothing.  It’s too bad that the Times didn’t offer more of his interview with Angle in the paper, like this exchange in the transcript they posted : NAGOURNEY: do you think President Obama represents the values of this country, in your view? ANGLE: President Obama and Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi represent what mainstream America is rejecting about Washington, D.C. And that is this out of touch with the people. When Harry Reid was asked to do town halls, for instance, on Obamacare, he refused. Now people want to talk about these things. They want to talk to their representatives about it. And certainly there was a mainstream reaction, a majority reaction, against Obamacare, and yet they passed it anyway. That portrait of hardline ideology doesn’t match the liberal-media storyline — even if it explains a Republican advantage at the polls.
