As Lily Tomlin ‘s Ernestine once said, “There’s nothing like a Hoover when you’re dealing with dirt.” Clint Eastwood ‘s J. Edgar could use more dirt: This is a sensitive, sympathetic portrait of a scummy little man, an earnest attempt to map the contours and contradictions of a complicated son-of-a-bitch. But it’s all too earnest, to the point of serving, unwittingly or otherwise, as an apologia. Even Eastwood’s attempt at a poignant Hoover death scene fails to hit the mark: I for one would want to stick the guy with a pin to make sure he was really dead.

Wait, Mariah Yeater: who’s the daddy?!? This 20-year old has been in the news all week because she’s filed a paternity lawsuit against Justin Bieber, alleging he knocked her up after a concert in late 2010 ( which he has denied ). But a woman named Frances Lippe has now come forward with major scoop related to this claim. Lippe tells TMZ that Yeater once dated her grandson, John Terranova. In December, about one month after she says Bieber got her pregnant, Yeater reportedly showed up at Lippe’s house and got into a major altercation with Terranova, stemming for her assertion that HE was the father of her child. Lippe says Yeater broke a window in the home and slapped her grandson three times in the face. Police were called to the scene and Yeater was booked on charges of battery. The family never heard from Mariah again. On July 6, she gave birth to a boy – and did NOT list anyone as the father.

Sometimes there are one or two or three things in a movie that seem wholly implausible: For example, characters who, in 2011, don’t use or even appear to own cell phones. Depending on the movie — and the necessity of cell phones to the story — you might find that one little glitch unforgivable or you might look the other way. But what if a movie has so many glitches, so many careless oversights, that looking the other way only brings on whiplash? The characters in Dito Montiel’s The Son of No One use cell phones, all right. But almost nothing else in the movie makes sense. It’s as if Montiel, who also wrote the script, came up with a cool idea and then had no idea how to spin it out into an even minimally plausible story.
