A friend once told me that his gold standard for new acquaintances involved the Leonard Cohen song “Anthem.” “There is a crack, a crack in everything,” the song goes. “That’s how the light gets in.” He applied it as a kind of authenticity test, because — pace Mr. Cohen — there are people out there who appear to lack the crack, whether it never fully formed or has been willfully spackled shut. There are films that lack it, too, some more ironically than others. Watching The Art of Getting By , the story of a singular teenager told in oppressively uniform terms, I was reminded of my friend’s judgment of a man I was seeing: No crack, no sir.
You’ve read the glowing reviews , you’ve heard about the crowds . But starting this weekend, it’s easier than ever to see Midnight in Paris , the late-era masterpiece from Woody Allen. The film’s continued theatrical expansion brings it to more than 900 screens nationwide, and considering its success to date, the folks at Sony Pictures Classics are feeling generous, offering up a Midnight in Paris poster signed by the Woodman himself. There’s just one little, 10-word catch. [ UPDATE : Only a few hours remain before the deadline! Submit your review after the jump.]

A new report has surfaced claiming that New Birth Missionary Baptist Church pastor Bishop Eddie Long is paying nearly $25 million and has given a private apology to settle claims he had improper sexual relationships with four young male parishioners. According to Redding News Review , a source who claims to be familiar with the details of the settlement and did not wish to be identified, said that Long refused to give a public apology, which ended up costing him more. Long allegedly gave each men a private apology. What began as a $2 million agreement to settle the case for each of the four men quickly rose to $5.5 million for the respective plaintiffs, the source said, only because Long refused to publicly admit guilt. The final figure comes to $22 million for the four men and $2.8 million for the plaintiffs attorneys. The church had reportedly already been paying these four young men $40,000 annually each before any charges were filed, the source said. Redding News Review has decided not to print the source’s paraphrasing of that apology. Read the full story here. Create a room or nook where you can reflect, be quiet, go inside, and get centered. In your daily life, you have so much to think about and to do. Between work, children, and errands, you hardly have a moment for yourself. This is why you must have a special place to renew your connection with your inner self and spirit. When you create a place in your home that encourages quietness, it will call out to your soul “Come, sit and listen.” Mindbodygreen.com suggests the following eight ideas for creating a sacred space: Quiet Is Where You Find The Real You 1. Convert an attic or guest room or simply create a corner or window seat in your living area that is dedicated to self-nourishment. A space that you deem “sacred” immediately sets the tone for going inward. 2. Hang a screen, beads, or billowy curtain to emphasize the importance of the environment as a place of solitude. This sacred space can be used to receive inner guidance and knowledge as well as to write, draw, paint, chant, play an instrument, or simply listen to birds sing outside. 3. To set the mood for contemplation, meditation, or prayer, place pillows on the floor or find a comfortable chair that supports your back. 4. Set up an altar with spiritual objects to bring in the energy of spirituality. Each object can be placed with an intention for going deep within your heart and soul. X-Men: First Class wants to be five movies at once, and it occasionally succeeds at being a few of them: One minute it’s a stylish James Bond-style retro pleaser, the next a bitter-edged revenge melodrama, the next your boilerplate “embrace individuality” empowerment brief. It is also, of course, a movie based on a comic-book franchise — in this case, Marvel’s long-running, multi-tentacled X-Men saga — and for that reason alone, it comes with a million other expectations attached. I don’t know what director in his right mind would want to take on such a project, but I admire Matthew Vaughn for trying.
