REVIEW: Exotic La Soga Succumbs to Standard-Issue Crime Clichés

A film loaded with interest that somehow fails to be interesting, La Soga is inspired by true events and not much else. A crime drama set in a satellite village orbiting Santiago, Dominican Republic, and occasionally New York City, it tells the story of Luisito (Manny Perez, who also wrote the film), an assassin-for-hire working for the local police and the American government to cleanse drug-dealing U.S. deportees from the streets. Social, moral, and personal themes abound, but are mostly left wandering shoeless among the extras, as Perez and American director Josh Crook get caught up in playing gangster film, Dominican-style.

Time Wrings Hands Over Question, ‘Can a Child Be Tried for Jihadist Crimes?’

With his August 12 post, “Can a Child be Tried for Jihadist Crimes?” , Time magazine’s Tim McGirk hit the Obama administration from the left on the military tribunal prosecution of jihadist Omar Khadr. Khadr was captured on a battlefield in Afghanistan in 2002, when he was just 15 years old. He’s charged with the murder of a U.S. soldier, a crime he’s already confessed to, although he now claims his confession was coerced. Although 15-year-olds in the United States are frequently tried as adults for murder and although Khadr is in 23 years old now, McGirk presented the case as the potential first conviction of a “child” for war crimes since World War II. What’s more, McGirk presented the case as a potential travesty of justice in an ill-conceived war on terror, a term he dismissively used in quote marks: Khadr’s trial got underway just as another military tribunal sentenced Osama Bin Laden’s former chef and driver, Ibrahim a-Qosi, to 14 years in prison. The first prosecution of a Gitmo prisoner since Obama took office promising to close down an offshore prison that had become a symbol of the Bush Administration’s riding roughshod over the rule of law in the course of its “war on terror”. Have we no decency! Putting poor cooks, chauffeurs, and children in prison and throwing away the key! At no point did McGirk indict al Qaeda terrorists, particularly Khadr’s late father Ahmed Said —  “an imposing, grey-bearded patriarch” who was “a close friend” of bin Laden’s — as monsters for allowing teenagers to join in suicidal jihad against the world’s most advanced military, even as he closed with this familiar critique of U.S. anti-terrorism policy (emphasis mine): Jury selection for Khadr’s trial is supposed to end on Wednesday and the trial will begin immediately afterwards. It is expected to run until mid September. But r egardless of its finding, the trial is unlikely to reflect positively on the Obama Administration in the eyes of many of its allies in the fight against al-Qaeda. REVIEW: Peepli Live Promises Modern India, Delivers Muddled Satire

Peepli Live begins with a tight shot of the face of a man running, it would seem, for his life. Natha (Omkar Das Manikpuri), a farmer belonging to the so-called Backward caste, is in fact catnapping in the ramshackle caravan carrying him back to the farm he is about to lose at auction, although his panicked sprint signifies something more than just an unpleasant dream. From the story told by Natha’s startled face, Peepli Live opens out slowly to encompass several factions of Indian society, including the press, local, state, and federal politicians, and the shady elements binding them all together. It’s a meticulously engineered design that a show like The Wire took several years to execute; here the strain shows within the first half hour.

REVIEW: Sexless Geek Isn’t as Heroic, Romantic as Scott Pilgrim Thinks

Everyone has the right to love the relics of his or her childhood: PacMan as opposed to Grand Theft Auto, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles over Dora the Explorer, New Kids on the Block trumping Taylor Swift. But nostalgia can be as cloying as it is comforting, and there comes a time when that wardrobe of ringer T’s emblazoned with cartoon characters ought to be left behind. Especially if you’re a grown-up guy and you have any interest in, you know, actually sleeping with a girl.

Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’ Video: Fall In Love All Over Again

Romantic clip for title track of pop star’s forthcoming album co-stars actor Josh Kloss. By James Montgomery Josh Kloss and Katy Perry in the “Teenage Dream” music video Photo: Eric Ford/Danny Mayer/ On Location News You’ve got to hand it to Katy Perry : she’s really hitting on all cylinders these days. “California Gurls,” the first single from her album Teenage Dream , was the official anthem of the first half of summer, a fun and flirty song that probably served as the soundtrack to your various beachfront flings. And now, she’s back with the album’s title track — and second single — which will undoubtedly serve as the soundtrack to one of those flings blossoming. She’s got you covered every step of the way … it’s sorta brilliant, really. Both “Teenage Dream” and its accompanying video are about falling madly in love, about losing your inhibitions and getting jelly-kneed by the mere thought of being near that certain someone. Sure, you may have snogged your fair share of guys or gals down the shore this summer (that’s what “California Gurls” was for), but now you’ve found the one that makes you feel all giddy inside, and you’re ready to let your guard down and go head-over-heels. “Dream” is all those gooey feelings turned into a pop song. The video was directed by Yoann Lemoine, who fills it with gauzy, sunset-tinged scenery: a beach in the waning light, the rapidly darkening hills of California, the incandescent glow of a pool in the early evening. Much like the song itself, the entire clip feels like a wooshing, love-drunk dream. Perry frolics with a frequently shirtless hunk (actor Josh Kloss) and is giddy throughout. She brings her friends (including L.A. socialites Ana Calderon and DJ Skeet Skeet) along to share in the merriment, and they throw impromptu dance parties all over Southern California. It all possesses an unwound, unabashed glee — the kind of bliss that only comes when you first fall in love, when everything seems to be taken from a movie (or, in this case, an Abercrombie & Fitch billboard) and nothing seems impossible. In that regard, it fits the feel of the song perfectly. Perry always stays on message. There is no deviation. It’s ingenious, not to mention a little frightening. Welcome to your favorite song of the second half of 2010, the one you’ll fall in love with (and to). You are powerless to resist. What do you think of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”? Weekday Vegetarian: Using Up Eggplant from the Garden

Photo: Kelly Rossiter I wrote last week about how well the eggplant is doing in my garden and the eggplant stack I made, and this week my daughter brought a whole bunch more to the cottage. There are so many things you can do with eggplant and so many different flavours it works with. Although I love Asian-style eggplant dishes with soy sauce and hot chilies, I was feeling like making something more Mediterranean. I had some beaut… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Your Office is In Your Pants: 6 Trends Shaping The Way We Work

In 1985, in the Harvard Business Review Philip Stone and Robert Luchetti foresaw in 1985 at the birth of the wireless phone that the era of the Mad Men style office that you went to and sat at a desk was over; they noted that Your office is where you are. They were off by about 25 years; it takes time for technological innovation to percolate through and cause real change. They also didn’t go far enough, thinking only about the promise of being able to talk on the phone; now the technology is getting so small that your office isn’t just where you are, it’s in your pants. Now Sami Grover is my favourite TreeHugger writer, (… Read the full story on TreeHugger
