John Edwards Trial Postponed Due to "Life-Threatening" Heart Condition

John Edwards has a life-threatening heart condition, sources confirm to CNN. The National Enquirer reported New Year’s Day that Edwards had sought to delay his trial for criminal corruption, scheduled to begin later this month, due to the condition. Looks like that was true. Lawyers and a federal judge met in a North Carolina courtroom Friday for a status hearing regarding the pending trial of the former U.S. senator. Edwards appeared in person at Friday’s hearing. The motion for a delay was made under seal, but some details were publicly revealed by the judge in the open hearing. The criminal trial has been delayed until at least March 26, according to reports . Judge Catherine Eagles said she’s contacted Edwards’ cardiologist, who recommended a postponement, saying John is scheduled to undergo surgery next month. Edwards is charged with six felony and misdemeanor counts related to donations to and payments he allegedly made from his failed 2008 presidential campaign. He’s accused of conspiracy, issuing false statements and violating campaign contribution laws by funneling money to now-infamous mistress Rielle Hunter . He denies wrongdoing. In a criminal sense. Even he says he’s a jerk.

We’re not tryna be mean, but… A federal judge disclosed Friday that former presidential candidate John Edwards has a life-threatening heart condition, a court source confirmed to CNN. Edwards had sought a delay in his criminal corruption trial, scheduled to begin this month. Attorneys and the federal judge met in a North Carolina courtroom Friday afternoon for a status hearing regarding the pending trial of Edwards, a former U.S. senator. Edwards appeared at Friday’s hearing. His lawyers had made the motion for a delay under seal, but some of its details were publicly revealed by the judge in the open hearing. The criminal trial has been delayed until at least March 26, according to the court source. Judge Catherine Eagles said she has been in contact with Edwards’ cardiologist, who recommended a postponement, saying Edwards is scheduled to undergo surgery next month. Edwards has to provide the court with a written medical update by February 28, according to court records. One legal expert, Marcellus McRae, a trial lawyer and former federal prosecutor, said he doubted that Edwards’ illness would influence a jury verdict. “Edwards’s illness may prompt the public, including potential jurors, to view him in a more sympathetic light. However, it is doubtful that this will have any impact on the outcome of his trial,” McRae said. “Given the nature of the charges, his physical condition is of no relevance and he will have in theory recovered by the time the case went to trial in March in any event.” Edwards’ attorneys asked in December to delay his criminal trial, saying he had an unspecified medical issue. Edwards is charged with six felony and misdemeanor counts related to donations to and payments from his failed 2008 presidential campaign. He is accused of conspiracy, issuing false statements and violating campaign contribution laws. He denies any wrongdoing. Edwards’ wife, Elizabeth, died of cancer in December 2010. The couple had separated that year, shortly after Edwards admitted that he had fathered a daughter with Rielle Hunter, who was hired to make documentary videos for his campaign for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. Selena Gomez Stalker to Judge: Restrain Me!

Thomas Brodnicki is one seriously effed up individual. But at least he seems aware of that fact. The stalker who has repeatedly threatened the life of Selena Gomez – at one point telling an officer he had “fifty conversations with God about killing Gomez” – actually told a judge today to issue a permanent restraining order against him. In sworn declaration, excerpted on TMZ , Brodnicki wrote to a Los Angeles court: “I believe that a restraining order should be issued against me to prevent me from trying to contact Selena Gomez. “I do not wish to object to the restraining order against me because I know it is the only thing that will make me stay away from Selena.” Brodnicki, 46, was placed on psychiatric hold last month after threatening to ” scratch people’s eyes out on the street ,” according to a police report, and telling folks he traveled to Los Angeles to find Selena. Disgraced politician John Edwards has asked his mistress Rielle Hunter to move into his North Carolina home, The National Enquirer has hilariously reported. “Rielle is considering the move,” a source close to her allegedly claims. John, whose wife Elizabeth Edwards died nearly a year ago, lives with his children Emma Claire, 13, and Jack, 11. Rielle welcomed his love child in late 2007. “She wants what’s best for their daughter Quinn and John’s other young children. If all of them under one roof will help the kids, it’s something Rielle will do.” How altruistic. Rielle Hunter is nothing if not selfless. His legal woes may also influence her: “Rielle knows the trial will be tough and doesn’t want the kids to suffer, so she’s genuinely considering his offer.” The former U.S. Senator, twice a serious presidential candidate and once the Democratic VP nominee, conducted an illicit affair with her during his second bid for the White House, and has been indicted for his alleged use of campaign funds to cover up the scandal. Rielle dumped John Edwards just a few days before he was indicted, even as he begged her to marry him, according to a probably bogus Enquirer report. They got the love child part right, though …

John Edwards Mug Shot: Always a Politician …

Once a politician, always a politician. Look at that handsome, smiling face. Going by these images, you’d never expect that former U.S. Senator John Edwards knocked up mistress Rielle Hunter while his wife was terminally ill, lied about it repeatedly, then allegedly covered it up with campaign funds. But, here we are. Nice to see John Edwards is still having fun . Edwards pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and campaign law violations. These mug shots were obtained by CNN . Goooo Freedom of Information Act! The plea came after a grand jury indicted him on six counts, including conspiracy, issuing false statements and violating campaign finance laws. The grand jury had been investigating whether money given to support Rielle Hunter by benefactors of Edwards’ 2008 run for the presidency. Their conclusion was that there was enough evidence to charge Edwards, who insists that despite his personal failings, he did not break the law . A plea deal between Edwards and the U.S. Justice Department fell apart over the the DOJ’s requirement that Edwards go to jail. He declined. Guess he’ll roll the dice at trial, where his chances of beating the rap are iffy. In the court of opinion, however, he’s long since been convicted.

If you knock up Rielle Hunter (and make a sex tape) while your wife’s terminally ill, then use her cancer to win sympathy from voters while seeking your party’s nomination for President of the United States, you are a pretty bad person. Still, John Edwards says, he didn’t do anything illegal. With daughter Cate Edwards standing behind him, he pleaded not guilty to using campaign money to cover up his affair and love child with Hunter. “There is no question that I’ve done wrong ,” the two-time former presidential hopeful said outside the federal courthouse in Winston-Salem, N.C. “I take full responsibility for having done wrong. I will regret for the rest of my life the pain and the harm that I’ve caused to others. But I did not break the law, and I never, ever thought I was breaking the law.” A federal grand jury indicted John Edwards for breaking federal campaign finance laws while he was running for president back in 2008. In 2007, the National Enquirer f irst got wind of – and reported – John’s affair with Rielle. He denied it all profusely and that was that. After the 2008 primaries, the Enquirer busted him visiting Rielle. He confessed the affair, but still maintained the child was not his. More than a year later, with Andrew Young set to blow the whistle on his role in the ordeal, he finally admitted paternity as well. Prosecutors allege funds were paid to Rielle Hunter and onetime Edwards aide Young – who for a long time claimed he knocked up Rielle – to cover up Edwards’ affair with Hunter and the child they had together. Prosecutors claim the money came from political donors and can be considered campaign funds since they aided Edwards’ presidential bid.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s startling admission that he fathered a child out of wedlock over a decade ago begs a number of questions, chief among them: Who is the mystery female employee he impregnated? Having hidden it so well under heavy scrutiny, why admit it now? How could be run for office while hiding a secret of this magnitude? We don’t know the answer to question #1 right now, though we imagine we will in time. The second is equally unclear. The third? Only Arnold knows. His mistress, who worked in the family’s home and continued to do so until earlier this year , always maintained that her then-husband was the dad. This is a remarkable story for a number of reasons. Even if Schwarzenegger’s public persona was a macho rogue, adultery doesn’t play well with voters … nor does lying and pulling a John Edwards. When the former U.S. senator and presidential candidate knocked up Rielle Hunter , he denied it to everyone’s face until he was flat out busted. Arnold, according to reports today at least, came clean to wife Maria Shriver very recently, prompting her to leave the actor and ex-governor. Schwarzenegger and Shriver separated last week and have four children ages 13-21. The split came amid rumors of Arnold’s philandering and drifting apart from his wife, but no mention of his affair or illegitimate child was made. Until the Los Angeles Times broke the story yesterday and he confirmed it. The question is whether the Times would have found anything had the couple not split up, and if not, why Arnold didn’t just take this one to his grave. His behavior and history with women became an issue during his first campaign for California governor, in the 2003 election, but he weathered it. Shriver offered a timely and politically crucial defense of her husband, vouching for his personal integrity. He won in 2003, then again in 2006. So after all that, how did this come out now, right after he left the state house and returned to life as a private citizen? Perhaps because of that? Maybe his hand was forced in some way. Maybe he just couldn’t keep it from Maria anymore and the guilt ate away at him. Maybe time will tell. Earlier today, Maria Shriver released a statement, saying, “This is a painful and heartbreaking time. As a mother, my concern is for the children.”

No. But the extent of the toll John Edwards’ affair and illegitimate child took on his ailing wife is being revealed for the first time. Interviewer Daphne Barak has kept this information secret until now, as Elizabeth requested. But now, in the wake of Eiizabeth’s tragic death last week, she reveals specifically what happened when the scorned wife learned of John’s cheating. In March, Rielle Hunter posed half-dressed, with her baby daughter, in GQ, attacking Elizabeth and sending messages that she and John were still an item. After years of being lied to, Elizabeth couldn’t take it anymore. “Elizabeth collapsed and had to be hospitalized immediately after that article was published,” Daphne says, adding that she was asked to keep quiet about it. Elizabeth’s reasons for keeping her collapse from the public were both obvious and more subtle. She wanted to remain a bastion of strength for her children. Also, there was pride and not wanting to show weakness. “This isn’t the only time Rielle Hunter’s presence silently hung in the air,” Barak said. “On March 8 when I picked up the telephone to Elizabeth, I told her that I was at the Regency hotel in New York for dinner. But suddenly the line went off.” “I called again, apologizing for us getting cut off, and repeated that I was at the Regency hotel in New York. Bubbly Elizabeth went all of sudden silent.” “Only minutes later, it hit me – the Regency hotel! For Elizabeth, the Regency Hotel was ‘the crime scene.’ This is where her husband had drinks at the Library (the name of the bar in the Regency) and locked eyes with Rielle Hunter.” John Edwards’ affair had begun. “Then she waited for him outside the hotel at the next light,” she explains of the night Rielle told John he was so hot. “Where everybody’s life changed.”

As friends and family mourning the death of Elizabeth Edwards, one celebrity news site waited a whole 12 hours before working the Rielle Huner angle. The infamous mistress of John Edwards hopes she and the former Democratic presidential candidate can get married now, according to Radar Online . A source close to Rielle Hunter says she “has been very patient” and “believes that John is her soul mate, and thinks they are going to get married.” Rielle Hunter in her bizarre GQ photo spread earlier this year . To those who applauded her courage in dealing with John, who cheated on her and knocked up Rielle while Elizabeth battled cancer, this won’t go over well. At the time of Elizabeth Edwards’ death , she was estranged from John. Radar ‘s source revealed that Hunter has been closely watching Elizabeth’s situation. “She doesn’t care about anyone but herself. She’s been selfish and horrible this whole time, no matter what else has been said about her,” the source said. THG NOTE : That’s pretty much all we’ve said about her . Hunter currently lives in a home paid for by John Edwards. She lives there with their young daughter Quinn, the child John adamantly denied was his . As for how Rielle will respond publicly to the news that Elizabeth has passed away, the source said they doubted what she said would be heartfelt. She never expressed regret for her role in the scandal, even denying she was a home wrecker and basically blaming Elizabeth for John straying. Basically, don’t expect a lot of sympathy now. “She will say some nice things about Elizabeth, but only if it makes her look good,” the source said. How Rielle Hunter could possibly look good, we don’t know.
