Richmond Renames Street After Tennis Legend Arthur Ashe

Continued here:

T he hometown of late legendary tennis player Arthur Ashe is making sure that his legacy is kept alive. According to ESPN , the city of Richmond recently renamed a road in Ashe’s honor. Thousands of people gather in Richmond for the renaming of a street to Arthur Ashe Boulevard and the unveiling of an exhibit on the struggle for black equality https://t.co/uHxJwJEJOm — The Washington Post (@washingtonpost) June 22, 2019 The plan for the thoroughfare renaming has been in the works for several years and it finally came to fruition on Saturday. Loved ones, elected officials, community leaders and supporters gathered for the unveiling of Arthur Ashe Boulevard. Ashe has broken several barriers for Black athletes over the course of his career. The tennis star—who earned three Grand Slam titles—was the first African American player to be selected for the U.S. Davis Cup team. He was also the first Black man to win the singles title at Wimbledon, the Australian Open and the U.S. Open. His impact transcended beyond the tennis court. Ashe utilized his platform to spread awareness about social issues. He created the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health and the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS. Earlier this year, the Richmond City Council approved a plan to name a stretch of Route 161 after the athlete. Hundreds of individuals, including Rep. John Lewis , were there to see the vision realized. “This is an extremely moving time for my family, but I think it’s also a tremendous success for Richmond as a progressive city,” Ashe’s nephew David Harris told ABC News . “We’re also putting a stake in the ground for Arthur Ashe’s legacy of social justice, which is good for all of us.” Cities across the country have been pushing their efforts to rename streets after Black pioneers forward. NASA recently renamed the street in front of its headquarters “Hidden Figures Way” to honor mathematicians Mary Jackson , Katherine Johnson , and Dorothy Vaughan for breaking barriers for African Americans in the space industry and pushing space exploration forward. B lack students across the country are making historic moves in academia. Just weeks after it was announced that Yale University elected its first-ever Black student body president, South Texas College of Law Houston has appointed its first Black editor for its law review publication, the National Jurist reported. 2L Kenesha Starling earned the esteemed role as the first black editor-in-chief of South Texas Law Review, shattering a nearly 100-year-old glass ceiling at Houston’s oldest law school. The institution is Houston’s oldest law school. Starling— who is working towards completing her final year in law school—has a lot of experience in both the business and law sectors. Throughout her journey, she’s balanced working full-time for a federal agency, pursuing her educational goals, and motherhood. In her new role, she hopes to bring diverse narratives within the legal community to the forefront. “Our school has a rich and impressive history; our alumni are Texas Supreme Court justices, judges, U.S. and district attorneys, and presidents of state and local bar associations, to name a few,” she said in a statement. “Our Law Review should reflect that same culture; it should be a leading resource for the legal community. It is not enough to be on Law Review — we have to increase our presence and open doors for all the law students who follow our stead as the esteemed South Texas Law Review.” Starling is fully aware of the responsibility that comes with being the first Black editor-in-chief and does not take her appointment lightly. She says she wants to do her best to open doors for others who look like her to follow in her footsteps. STCL faculty members believe that her appointment is a major step towards fostering diversity. Black women are stepping into leadership positions at prestigious colleges and universities. In November 2018, Kristine E. Guillaume was appointed to lead the Harvard Crimson ; making her the first African American woman to become president of the paper since it launched in 1873. Beth Chapman Hospitalized and in Coma as Dog Asks for Prayers

Beth Chapman has, once again, been hospitalized for issues related to her cancer. And unfortunately, things aren’t looking so great at this exact moment. Beth, wife of Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman, was first diagnosed with throat cancer in September of 2017. Doctors classified the cancer as stage two, but just a couple of months after the initial diagnosis, the couple made the statement that the cancer had been completely removed. But, as we all know, cancer is the absolute worst, and last year, it came back. Things seemed to be more serious this time around — in November, she underwent emergency surgery to take care of a blockage in her throat that was obstructing her airway. Duane said at the time that she was “not doing good,” and that doctors feared the cancer had spread from her throat. They later confirmed that the fears were correct, and that the cancer had spread to her lungs. She pulled through that surgery, but she was hospitalized again in April after she experienced some difficulty breathing. Throughout everything, she’s been extremely active on social media , and she’s honestly been an inspiration. She’s been so strong, and she’s shown so much love to Duane, who she says has been there with her every step of the way And although her prognosis isn’t good, she’s chosen to spend whatever time she may have left with her family instead of in hospitals or in hospice. She’s even been working on Dog’s Most Wanted , a new show that touches a bit on Beth’s battle while still, of course, focusing on Dog’s work as a bounty hunter. Sadly though, her work came to a halt yesterday when she was admitted to the ICU at a hospital in Honolulu. At this point, we don’t know too many details about what exactly brought her to the hospital, but her family gave a brief statement to local news site Hawaii News Now. In the statement, they revealed that Beth had been placed in a medically-induced coma, and that they “humbly ask everyone to please pray for Beth.” Additionally, they offered their “sincere thanks to everyone for their prayers throughout Beth’s battle with cancer.” Last night, Duane shared a similar message on Twitter, writing to his followers “Please say your prayers for Beth right now thank you love you.” View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Beat Cancer When People reached out to their rep for an additional statement, they were told simply that “It’s quite serious.” Here’s hoping that Beth manages to pull through this, and that Duane and the rest of their family are getting plenty of support during this difficult time.

People Ain’t Isht: Mother Arrested For Abandoning Her 9-Year-Old Son At McDonald’s To Gamble

Source: S3studio / Getty Mother Arrested For Abandoning Her Boy In McDonald’s A mother in Phoenix, Arizona left her 9-year-old child alone at McDonald’s to gamble at a casino because, “he drives [her] crazy.” According to reports from Yahoo Lifestyle , 34-year-old Stacy Rupp dropped off her 9-year-old son at McDonald’s on Wednesday evening at around 8:30 p.m. before hitting Desert Diamond Casino, located about a mile away. An employee observed the unsupervised boy looking “dirty and disheveled” and ended up calling the police. While he was there, the staff gifted the young boy with a coloring book, ice cream, and cookies, read a police report. Officer Brandon Sheffert of the  Peoria Police Department told Yahoo that the child was not upset. He said his mother dropped him off in order to gamble but noted, “She always comes back.” Her son had been left unattended for two hours. Rupp ended up arriving only minutes after law enforcement — and she came with excuses. According to the police report, Rupp first told officers she was grocery shopping at a nearby Fry’s Marketplace, but couldn’t provide any proof. She then proceeded to admit that she “messed up,” and went to the casino. “He drives me crazy and steals my money,” she said in the police report. According to AZ Family , court documents state that Rupp “did not provide a cell phone or any type of means of communication to the victim for him to get in contact with her in case of an emergency.” Stacy Rupp was arrested and charged with child abuse and endangerment. A future court date has been set for July.
