Source: Theo Wargo / Getty Images for Roc Nation “He Is I And I Am Him” As the Great Young Hov took the stage during his much-anticipated ‘B-Sides 2’ performance at Webster Hall in New York City on Friday, I stood in the crowd surveying what was transpiring before my eyes. The man known as Shawn Carter, and the performer known as Jay-Z had merged to meet on the stage. Like a superhero, we’ve come to know the public facing side of the performer while the man has been kept elusive. But after Friday and as a longtime Jay-Z fan, I felt connected to the duality that his performance represented. Prior to him taking the stage, we were warned by DJ Clark Kent that this would be Jay’s most gritty set to date. He spinned deep cuts that only the most invested rap heads would know, with a heavy emphasis on Kanye West, Dipset and Nas. But what we did not know was that Kent had given us a precursor for what was to come. And it wasn’t so much about the ways he sprouted out the lyrics across his almost 30-year-career in the rap game, it was also about the literal style and execution. Every detail from the glimmering Roc-A-Fella chandelier on the ceiling to Jay-Z’s attire, to his pouring of multiple glasses of champagne to share with the crowd, summoned us back to a time when Black people owned their music, their image and their message, transforming us to what felt like a one-night-only front stage seat at the Cotton Club. And if that was the case then I claim Jay, standing on the stage, embodied the charisma and charm of Sammy Davis Jr. If we are keeping it about Black excellence during that time that would be the only way for me to describe it. “Who You Know Fresher Than Hov, Riddle Me That?” Source: Theo Wargo / Getty Images for Roc Nation As his accompanying band, 1500 or Nothin’, walked out all dressed in suits, I started to get the feeling that my Cotton Club dreams were coming to fruition. They began playing “The Prelude,” Jay-Z’s opening track on Kingdom Come which signaled his return to rap for about 15 seconds, until an orange light flickered in the middle of the stage, and there right before us stood Jay-Z. The rapper wore a custom tailored suit styled by June Ambrose with a gold medallion. He also sported a matching headband which cropped his full coiled afro. The bandana and the suit again represented the duality that Jay-Z and Shawn Carter represent, from where he came, to what the journey laid before us. The nearly three-hour set took us down a path that was not always linear, but over the course of 41 songs, we were in full agreement that the man before us was one of the greatest of all time to ever do it. There was a moment, which has now become internet fodder, where Jay gave a tribute to the late Nipsey Hussle with a freestyle verse at the end of “Some How Some Way.” While many took issue with the rapper’s allegiance to capitalism and the use of his word “gentrification” as a call to mobilize Black entrepreneurs to take back their neighborhoods, it also signaled that in the age of the internet, one word phrases and small snippets just didn’t give the moment justice. And while I do believe in keeping our public figures accountable, the brevity of what Friday represented, along with the lyrics to “The Can’t Be Life,” in relation to Nipsey’s life was pitch perfect. “Can’t Touch The Untouchable, Break The Unbreakable” Source: Theo Wargo / Getty Images for Roc Nation Somewhere near “American Dreamin’” the energy shifted and like the inaugural B-Sides concert in 2015, it was made evident that Jay was bringing out a few guests for the ride. And then out walked Nasir Jones, donning a Black tux suit with a floor length leather coat. The two former foes had long since laid their lyrical powers against each other to the side. But to see their chemistry up close was astounding. As the set moved into, “Success,” followed by “The World Is Yours,” there was Jay, rapping Nas’ lyrics alongside the man himself, oftentimes playing the hype man to the iconic Queensbridge emcee. By this time, we knew other special guests would appear, so when Cam’ron Harlem’s very own walked out, it was full hysteria. The two rapped the first few verses of “Welcome To New York City,” until that same orange light singled that yet again another rap pioneer, Jim Jones, was making his entrance onto the stage. Jay again played the background while Cam’ron and Jones, took over as one half of Dipset to perform “I Really Mean It.” By the time Cam’ron and Jones walked off, with Cam’ron visibly emotional, the crowd was in an uproar. But the rest of the journey would not deter to another special guest, it would be a moment for the rapper to spit some of his most personal lyrics including “Blueprint (Momma Loves Me)” and Adnis. After that intimate set Jay and his longtime DJ and confidant Young Guru ran through snippets of deep cuts while Jay rapped off memory to “Show You How,” “LA-LA-LA,” and “I Love the Dough.” By the time the rapper closed out the show, with a jazzy rendition of “Hovi Baby” I knew Jay, the leader of the pack, had achieved exactly what he set out to do.
John Singleton will be taken off of life support today (April 29) according to his family. The renowned director’s family issued a statement confirming the decision. “It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off of life support today,” reads the family’s statement, per ABC News . “This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors.” It continues, “It is, for us, heartbreaking. We are grateful to his fans, friends and colleagues for the outpouring of love and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.” Seems like all the confusion earlier today about whether or not Singleton was still alive was due to poor communication. The Real Housewives of Atlanta cast is locked in multiple major feuds right now. NeNe Leakes is going off of Porsha Williams and on Cynthia Bailey and has apparently decided that everyone is her enemy. Bravo is scrambling to deploy their cameras so that they can capture all of this messy drama for themselves. HollywoodLife reports that showrunnes are putting the pedal to the medal so that they can begin production. “[ Real Housewives Of Atlanta ] p roducers want to start filming Season 12 as soon as possible,” an insider reveals. The source specifies that they want to do this “so they can capture the ongoing drama between Porsha [Williams] and NeNe [Leakes].” Real talk, does anyone need NeNe specified with her last name? She’s not the only person named NeNe, but she is the only Real Housewife. (It’s not like she’s named Lisa) The insider adds that they want to capture that “as well as the drama between NeNe and Cynthia [Bailey].” “Producers were supposed to start filming in June,” the source reveals. For producers, that’s along month and some change away. Too far, by their estimation. “But they are trying to get everything in place,” the insider shares. The soruce says that they’re doing their best to prepare “to begin earlier if possible.” Cynthia Bailey and NeNe were once fast friends. They have been feuding over the most peculiar subject — Cynthia’s party. If you’ll recall, Cynthia didn’t give NeNe a head’s up that Kenya Moore would be attending her party. As a result, NeNe accused Cynthia of lying to her . In NeNe’s view, Cynthia betrayed her, and she refuses to accept her apology. And then there’s Porsha Williams. Porsha accuses NeNe of not being supportive of her because NeNe didn’t attend her baby shower. (A lot of anger and resentment and bitterness over who attends which parties, huh? It’s like being 14 again) And then there’s the fact that Porsha went into NeNe’s closet when NeNe had specifically asked that everyone stay out of it. Petty? Yes. But an extremely fair boundary to set and not a reasonable one to cross. Following the Reunion special, NeNe and Porsha have taken their quarrel off camera. On Instagram, Porsha announced that NeNe had body-shamed her following her pregnancy. NeNe did bombard her with a series of vicious insults. (Say what you will about NeNe, but she is relentless and creative with her personal attacks) So yeah, these two aren’t making peace any time soon … but that doesn’t mean that Bravo’s cameras want to miss any of the action. Not to be all armchair psychiatrist here, but … maybe part of NeNe’s especially short fuse and these feuds isn’t about the other women. Don’t get us wrong, we understand why Cynthia and Porsha are clashing with her. But considering Gregg Leakes’ cancer battle and the very real toll that it has taken on NeNe, could it be that she’s just … frustrated. Gregg has lashed out verbally at her, and it’s really gotten to her. Could it be that she’s lashing out at Cynthia and Porsha because they’re “safe targets” for her frustrations? Or maybe she’s just, you know, a reality star and she’s feuding like it’s her job because it is literally her job.

There, doctors discovered that she had stage 4 breast cancer and just a week later she, unfortunately, passed away, leaving behind 11 kids ranging from ages 4 to 23 years old. The family created a GoFundMe account to raise money for their mother’s burial and funeral expenses and reached their goal of $100,000. However, after the world got wind of the family’s story, donations kept pouring in as many people became eager to help out and the GoFundMe campaign ballooned to $138,405 in donations for the family. Although the money will help out in some regards, the family admits that they still have some financial struggles and are trying to cope with the loss of their mother as they try to pick up the pieces where their mother left off. Source: JazzIRT / Getty Man Punches 4-Month Old Baby To Death After Discovering He Wasn’t The Father According to Fox 13 Memphis , Jose Agurcia-Avila was arrested by Memphis police and charged with first-degree murder after punching a 4-month old baby. Avila reportedly became upset after learning the child, Alexander Lizondro-Chacon, wasn’t his. Cops say Avila punched the child so hard that the baby was left unresponsive when the mother returned home. The child was rushed to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis but was pronounced dead upon arrival. An autopsy revealed the baby died from blunt force trauma and his death was ruled a homicide. The medical examiner concluded that the boy’s injuries were a fractured skull, fractured rib and a serious case of pneumonia. The boy’s mother told police that Avila confessed. The 33-year-old is charged with first-degree murder in perpetration of aggravated child abuse and first-degree murder in perpetration of aggravated child neglect.
For the past several years, Meri Brown has appeared to have a serious problem with her polygamist lifestyle. It makes sense — being a Sister Wife looks like it really, really sucks. Meri has been unhappy for as long as Sister Wives has been a thing, and it’s easy to imagine her unhappiness existed before then, too. She’s admitted to struggling with sharing her husband, Kody, with Janelle, Christine, and Robyn, and we’ve also seen some tension from the fact that she was only ever able to have one child. But in the past few years, things have definitely gotten worse. In 2015, Meri found herself in what we would call an emotional affair with a man she met online. The man turned out to be a woman — she got catfished — but still, she clearly developed feelings for this person that went beyond friendship. After it happened, the family tried to stand by her and spin the whole thing in an anti-catfish way, but at the end of the day, they saw that Meri had pretty much been stepping out on Kody. Which is fine, to be clear. Kody has three other wives, and no one could blame her for looking for something somewhere else, but the way the Sister Wives operate is that the women are faithful to their husband while he rotates marriages on a schedule. As we saw on the show, the relationship between Kody and Meri really suffered for all of this, and at several points, it seemed like they weren’t going to make it . For a while, she told him that she didn’t want him staying at her house anymore, and more recently, he thought she was over it when she made the decision to buy her bed and breakfast. But for some reason, they’re still kicking, and now they’re kicking in a brand new state! Yep, last fall, the Brown family moved out of Las Vegas and over to Flagstaff, Arizona . And you’ll never believe this, but Meri seems to be unhappy with the way things are now. This weekend, she took to Instagram to explain the way she’s feeling these days, and honestly, it doesn’t sound great. “Yesterday I had this overwhelming emotion of missing Las Vegas, the place I called home for nearly 8 years,” her message began. “I mean, I was really really sad for not living there anymore.” “So much life there, so many friends,” she continued. “It was home for me. I loved it.” “Then this morning I wake up, sun is shining, beautiful day. I mean, my back yard is the mountains for heavens sake!” Meri said. “How could I not love this??” She then tried to turn her frown upside down by saying “Though I’m new here to Flagstaff and it doesn’t feel like home yet, I look forward to this summer, exploring the city, the amazing nature that surrounds me, and of course meeting new people, trustworthy friends.” “There’s a lot of life ahead of me here,” she finished, “and I’m anxious to see where it takes me.” So it really sounds like she’s not happy but trying to make the best of it, right?
