Peggy Alford Becomes First Black Woman Nominated To Facebook’s Board Of Directors

View post:

A lthough tech companies have been stagnant with moving the needle on racial and gender diversity, there are many individuals who are rising up the ranks and breaking barriers in the industry. According to USA Today , Facebook has nominated PayPal executive Peggy Alford to its board of directors. Alford, a prominent technology executive, would be the first African-American woman and second African-American to join the board of the social media giant. https://t.co/YThlHAPraP — USA TODAY (@USATODAY) April 12, 2019 The nomination is historic as Alford will become the first Black woman and the second Black person to join the board. The tech industry veteran—who is a graduate of the University of Dayton—has served in leadership positions at eBay and Rent.com. She took on the role of Senior Vice President of Core Markets at PayPal this year. Prior to joining the PayPal team, she was the Chief Financial Officer and Head of Operations for the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative; an organization created by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan that is designed to use technology as a solution to better education and change the criminal justice system. Zuckerberg believes Alford’s presence on the board will help the company move in the right direction in regards to diversity. “Peggy is one of those rare people who’s an expert across many different areas — from business management to finance operations to product development,” he said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “I know she will have great ideas that will help us address both the opportunities and challenges facing our company.” Alford is beyond thrilled to join the board and says she admires the company’s “desire to face hard issues head-on.” Last year American Express CEO Kenneth Chenault became the first African-American person to be appointed to Facebook’s board of directors. There is a need for more diversity on corporate boards—especially in regards to gender. According to Bloomberg , 21,424 U.S. board seats are held by men while only 5,088 are held by women. Howard University And Lionsgate Create Internship Program To Diversify The Entertainment Industry

Read the original here:

H oward University and Lionsgate have joined forces in an effort to tackle Hollywood’s diversity issues. The HBCU and the entertainment company have launched an internship program to teach students the ins and outs of television and film, Deadline reported. Thanks to @Lionsgate , students at Howard University in D.C. are getting a chance to learn the entertainment business through paid internship programs https://t.co/32IuNnmVN5 — Deadline Hollywood (@DEADLINE) April 11, 2019 The program—which initially started at UCLA—is designed to build a pipeline of diverse students and open up career pathways for them to enter the industry. During the internship program, six to 12 students will have the opportunity to work across various departments in the company, go on field trips, attend lectures from prominent individuals in the industry and work on their own projects. The effort to bring the program to Howard was led by alumni Sen. Kamala Harris . The institution’s president Wayne A. I. Frederick says that the internship program will be an integral part of ensuring that the next generation of Hollywood executives is diverse. “Howard University has produced several graduates from film, law, business and theater who have paved their own paths into Hollywood through their persistence, however there is more work to do before the entertainment industry reflects the diverse audiences it serves,” Frederick said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “I applaud our partners at Lionsgate for building a bridge from higher education to the workplace which will help diversify Hollywood behind the camera and create a new generation of executives.” Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns added that students in the program are “creating opportunities for us to make our workplace more diverse and our storytelling richer and more varied.” Both Lionsgate and Howard hope that they can set the example for other HBCUs and entertainment companies to follow suit. Programs that create career pathways in the entertainment industry for underrepresented groups are needed. According to UCLA’s 2019 Hollywood Diversity Report , people of color make up a mere 7.8 percent of film writers and only 12.6 percent of film directors come from diverse backgrounds. ‘RHOAS11’ Reunion Recap: NeNe’s Attitude Steals The Show Again

Visit link:

Source: Bravo / Getty Part two of the Real Housewives of Atlanta Reunion aired tonight and honestly, it should be the last episode to finally close out the season, but it’s not. There’s more next week. Anyway, tonight Andy rehashed more trite issues that we need to just let die. Anyway, NeNe’s negativity takes center stage again. Her attitude is heavy, and it’s affecting everyone else. Once again, Andy discusses her drama with Gregg. NeNe reveals that they are in therapy but when Gregg comes out later to give his side of the story, he said he wants to work things out with NeNe. Therapy is a good step, but NeNe says she’s not sure what she wants to do. That could just be her taking a dig at Gregg. You know how she likes to be so nasty and so rude when she feels attacked so this could be that. Let’s fast forward a bit because even Eva, Tanya, Porsha and Cynthia had moments where they explained that they were genuinely in NeNe’s corner and wanted to support her. NeNe said that none of them were her friends at all and that really seems to sting. Porsha is the first to bring that up in a seemingly heartfelt attempt to get NeNe to see that they are on her side. They also agree that NeNe pushes people away and it’s hurtful. NeNe, after all that was said, said she had nothing to say. Prior to Porsha’s plea, the only thing NeNe really had to say was that these women were just coming at her for clout. You know how she thinks she’s the Queen B, right? Yeah. So that’s that. Fun NeNe is entirely gone and we’re left with the egomaniac who treats people like trash. Eva brought up an interesting point too. She said NeNe is only cool with her when she acts like a lap dog. This is something that has definitely come up before with NeNe and other women. But that aside, we also know that NeNe does not do nice very well when she feels her life isn’t going well. That’s also what we’re seeing. It’s sad to see but it is what it is, and there will be even more next week. The big fallout is coming. Jenelle Evans: No More Kids for Me! My Baby Factory is CLOSED!

Is Jenelle Evans a good mother? LOL, just kidding. Jenelle basically shot to reality superstardom because she wasn't a good mother — she was actually really, really bad at it. The first season of Teen Mom 2 was an absolute disaster when it came to her scenes, and since then, she's had two more children. Have things gotten better? Sure. But better certainly doesn't mean good. And that's why the latest news concerning Jenelle's reproductive systen is just so, so great. 1. A Sincere Nightmare So Jenelle’s parenting skills … yeah, they’re not so great. 2. Poor Jace After she gave birth to her first child, Jace, when she was 17 years old, and a few months later she lost custody of him to her mother. 3. Come On Now The issue was that she just didn’t understand that you have to, like, take care of a baby — she honestly thought she could leave her newborn at home and party all night because he’d be sleeping anyway. 4. True She once said that Jace didn’t need her because he had her mom, and that was true — Barbara stepped up to take care of him, and she’s never stopped. 5. Sure For several years, Jenelle kept talking about how she was going to get Jace back without ever really putting in any work to reach that goal. Instead, she got arrested several times and developed a heroin addiction. 6. Weird Move She did eventually settle down a little bit — she kicked heroin, at least — but instead of putting her time and energy into getting things together for Jace, she just had another kid with a guy she’d known for a few weeks. Florida Deputy Deplorably Body Slams Sixth Grader, Sheriff Denies It Was ‘Excessive Force’

Source: Tetra Images/Getty Images / Getty Florida Deputy Caught On Tape Body Slamming Student A Florida (of course) deputy will not see consequences for his actions after he was caught on camera violently violating a student. A 15-second video shows a Sheriff’s deputy body slamming a sixth-grade student outside of Lincoln Park Acamedy in Fort Piece, Florida. According to an incident report obtained by WPTV the confrontation between the student and deputy occurred on April 9. Before the body slam, the student, who was not identified, had already been suspended from school for being disruptive in a classroom. Later he was standing outside “being disruptive” while waiting for his parents to come pick him up. Lincoln Park Academy’s Assistant Principal said however that the student was not supposed to leave his office and asked the deputy to help bring the student back inside. The Deputy reported that the student ignored his commands and “continued walking with his fist clenched and had an agitated expression on his face. His brows were turned down and he was punching his fist into the palm of his hand” before the slam. St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara is denying that the deputy used excessive force. “Our school resource deputy is very familiar with this student and knows he has a violent history, including possessing weapons,” Mascara said during a press conference reports WPTV . He added that a knife had recently been confiscated from the student and the student has to be escorted around campus because he’s been “physically aggressive to staff and students.” Do YOU think that justifies that body slam???

Second-Grader’s School Project Led To Meeting With Bessie Coleman’s Niece

A Black youngster is displaying the power and importance of representation. At the age of four Noa was exposed to the legacy of aviator Bessie Coleman through an episode of the animated series Doc McStuffins and has made the effort to learn more about her historic contributions. When asked by her second grade teacher to do a project about Amelia Earhart , she decided to highlight Coleman instead, Because of Them We Can reported. When Noa was 4 she learned about Bessie Coleman. Now in the 2nd grade, when her teacher asked her to dress up and do a report on Amelia Earhart, she refused. Now she can add Bessie Coleman’s niece to her list of friends. https://t.co/ama7yfu2d0 — #becauseofthemwecan (@Becauseofthem) April 8, 2019 Noa and her classmates were tasked with doing history projects about influential figures from different time periods. They had to complete written reports and dress up as the individuals they wrote about for the school’s Wax Museum exhibit. Noa went above and beyond with her project and with the assistance of her parents contacted The National Aviation Hall of Fame and the National Women’s Hall of Fame who provided her with relics to use for her presentation. Cognizant of the influence that Coleman’s journey has had on Noa, the National Aviation Hall of Fame arranged for the second-grader to meet Bessie Coleman’s great-niece Gigi Coleman in-person. The organization flew the family out to Ohio for Coleman’s show which was a part of the Air Force Museum Foundation’s Living History Series. “I want other kids to know that at times it’s not just an assignment, but it could be something that could change your life,” Noa’s mother Moniqua told the news outlet. Born in 1892, Bessie Coleman was the first Black woman to earn a pilot license. Since there were no flight training opportunities for women and people of color in the United States she saved her money to study aviation in France. The Texas native got her international pilot license in 1921. She aspired to open up an educational facility for Black fliers. She died in 1926 at the age of 34 in a plane crash. Coleman was the epitome of a barrier breaker and her legacy lives on through individuals like Noa who have become students of her journey. Check out Noa’s Wax Museum project below. Reunited And It Feels So Good, Millennium Tour Takes Us Back To The Early 2000’s

View original post here:

Source: Local: B2K 2019 Millennial Tour_Contest_KBFB_Dallas_RD_January 2019 / CS – IONE DIGITAL   Last week I was able to relive one the best time periods in my 20 something years of living along with so many others at the Millennium Tour. Going back to a time where Jersey Dresses, Slouch socks, bamboo earrings, and men wearing 2XL everything was considered a trend, this was a show I could not miss. The best moment about this particular time period was the music. Lloyd had us wanting to go to the south side, while we chicken head with Chingy at the H oliday-Inn , we were all slowing down for Bobby V, Grinding with Pretty Ricky, rying to be J ust A Friend  to Mario, and explaining to B2K why some of us made the perfect Girlfriend . There were many popular child stars and groups that was in our age bracket we felt there was chance to chosen, which I feel is lacking in today’s music. Who are kids listening to in there age bracket and who is this generation growing up with musically? As a child I had posters plastered all around my room and school lockers from the Word Up Magazines t o the CD covers. So covering the Millennium Tour was nothing short from amazing. Was I the only one who kept CD’s on repeat feeling like I was being sung to knowing damn well half of those songs we shouldn’t have known in the first place?  Well it’s truly an amazing feeling to grow up with the stars you admired and I can honestly say the feeling was mutual for these performers as well. r While I enjoyed the show as if i was back at a Scream Tour, I did run into a few familiar faces. Now there were much speculation about certain artist not being apart of the tour and why,  but somehow they made there way to Millennium Tour right here in the ATL. Check out what your favorite childhood stars, see what they’ve been up to along with what they have in store.
