Jesus Take The Wheel: 29 Year-Old “Heart Attack Grill” Spokesperson Dies Weighing 575 Lbs

Blair River, the 575-pound spokesman for the Heart Attack Grill, an Arizona restaurant that serves shamelessly high-calorie burgers and fries, died Tuesday at the age of 29, following a bout of the flu. At 6 feet 8 inches tall, River garnered celebrity as the grill’s “Gentle Giant” when he became the face and advertising star of the medically themed restaurant — famous for its triple-bypass burgers, flatliner lard fries and server “nurses” donning uniforms fit for adult films. River came down with the flu last week, and after four days in the hospital, he succumbed to pneumonia, says Jon Basso, owner of the grill and close friend of River .Basso described River’s death as “tragic,” because he was a “young creative genius, a promising man whose life got cut short because he carried extra weight. Had he been thin, he would have had a tenfold opportunity to survive the pneumonia.” Though Basso goes by “Dr. Jon,” in line with the restaurant’s medical theme, he is not medically trained and so can’t speak to the role obesity might have played in River’s illness. The official cause of death for the hamburger model is still unknown. Medical professionals wouldn’t necessarily disagree with this link, however. “Obesity increases your risk for just about every condition, and it can make nearly every acute health problem worse,” says Keith Ayoob, director of the nutrition clinic at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Melissa Leo Drops F-Bomb While Accepting Best Supporting Actress Oscar

Presenter Kirk Douglas nearly stole the show until the ‘Fighter’ star made her memorable speech. By Brian Warmoth Melissa Leo accepts the award for Actress in a Supporting Role Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Melissa Leo sparked some pre-Oscar controversy with her last-minute advertisements in major Hollywood trades, but in the end, nothing could disrupt the Best Supporting Actress nominee’s momentum from her wins at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards and Critics Choice Awards. In the end, the two-time nominee beat out Amy Adams and Helena Bonham Carter to make the 50-year-old star and her part in “The Fighter” one of the night’s biggest stories. Kirk Douglas stole the show for a few minutes before presenting Leo’s award, which crowned her role as Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale’s mother with a golden statue. A heavy favorite, thanks to her previous honors in the last few months, Leo also beat out young contender Hailee Steinfeld and Jacki Weaver, who was nominated for “Animal Kingdom.” But it was Leo’s own speech that was being referred to for the rest of the night, thanks to her nervous slip-up. “Yeah, I am kind of speechless; golly sakes, there’s people up there too,” Leo marveled, waving at the audience in the mezzanine. “When I watched Kate two years ago, it looked so f—ing easy!” Luckily, ABC had enough of a broadcast time delay to bleep out her F-bomb, but that hasn’t stopped it from being an instant classic acceptance speech. After being passed up in 2009 for her performance in the comparatively small art-house film “Frozen River,” Leo walked off the stage with international recognition for her much bigger box office success story. Leo’s belief in her character Alice Ward propelled her through the final weeks of Oscar voting. Her decision to launch ads personally, reportedly without consulting “Fighter” distributors Paramount and Relativity, stirred up headlines as voters were finalizing their picks, but whether or not she managed to sway the Academy into her corner or already had their attention won’t make any difference now that she has the Oscar. Shortly after Leo’s win, Bale also took home the Supporting Actor prize. DVD: Sweet Smell of Success Still a Cookie Full of Arsenic

One of the amusing running gags in Barry Levinson’s Diner is a character who wanders through the movie, constantly muttering lines from Sweet Smell of Success , newly available in a snazzy new Blu-Ray edition from The Criterion Collection. And with dialogue this good — courtesy of Clifford Odets and Ernest Lehman, based on Lehman’s story — who can blame the guy for wanting to recite these delicious lines over and over? “The cat’s in the bag, and the bag’s in the river,” “You’re dead, son; get yourself buried,” “Your mouth is as big as a basket, and twice as empty,” “In brief, from now on, the best of everything is good enough for me” — this is staccato word jazz of the most delicious variety.

For Discussion: Shouldn’t The Grammy’s Be Reflective Of What’s Popular In Society? Steve Stoute Thinks So…

Yesterday, former music executive Steve Stoute let loose a scathing letter to the Grammy committee chastising their use of today’s most popular artists to sell the award show, without properly crediting them with statues for the categories in which they are nominated. Over the course of my 20-year history as an executive in the music business and as the owner of a firm that specializes in in-culture advertising, I have come to the conclusion that the Grammy Awards have clearly lost touch with contemporary popular culture. My being a music fan has left me with an even greater and deeper sense of dismay — so much so that I feel compelled to write this letter. Where I think that the Grammys fail stems from two key sources: (1) over-zealousness to produce a popular show that is at odds with its own system of voting and (2) fundamental disrespect of cultural shifts as being viable and artistic. As an institution that celebrates artistic works of musicians, singers, songwriters, producers and technical specialists, we have come to expect that the Grammys upholds all of the values that reflect the very best in music that is born from our culture. Unfortunately, the awards show has become a series of hypocrisies and contradictions, leaving me to question why any contemporary popular artist would even participate. How is it possible that in 2001 The Marshall Mathers LP — an album by Eminem that ushered in the Bob Dylan of our time — was beaten out by Steely Dan (no disrespect) for Album Of The Year? While we cannot solely utilize album sales as the barometer, this was certainly not the case. Not only is Eminem the best-selling artist of the last decade, but The Marshall Mathers LP was a critical and commercial success that sold over 10 million albums in the United States (19 million worldwide), while Steely Dan sold less than 10% of that amount and came and went as quietly as a church mouse. Or consider even that in 2008 at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, after going into the night as the most-nominated artist, Kanye West’s Graduation was beaten out for Album Of The Year by Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters. (This was the first time in 43 years that a jazz album won this category.) While there is no doubt in my mind of the artistic talents of Steely Dan or Herbie Hancock, we must acknowledge the massive cultural impact of Eminem and Kanye West and how their music is shaping, influencing and defining the voice of a generation. It is this same cultural impact that acknowledged the commercial and critical success of Michael Jackson’s Thriller in 1984. What say you? Do you feel that the Grammy’s are representative of today modern pop culture? Go to HipHopWired to read more of Stoute’s letter

Father Of The Missing Swiss Twin Girls Sends Confession Letter To His Wife!

This is just plain sad, what the hell is with all these parents doing sick sh*t to their own children? LAUSANNE, Switzerland — A letter sent to their mother brought out the worst fears in the search for the Swiss twins, who went missing almost two weeks ago. “They are resting in peace, they didn’t suffer,” their 43-year-old father wrote, shortly before throwing himself in front of a train. Swiss police say the search for 6-year-olds Alessia and Livia will continue until their fate is known, even as evidence mounts that they won’t be found alive. His letter did not say when or where he killed his children. “Today we are always searching for Alessia and Livia,” Jean-Christophe Sauterel, spokesman for the Vaud cantonal police, told The Associated Press on Friday night. “It’s just what the father said. … We don’t have proof.” The latest blow is the Feb. 3 letter from Matthias Kaspar Schepp to his estranged wife. He wrote from Cerignola, Italy, that the girls were dead and he would now kill himself. That same day a witness saw him throw himself in front of a moving train at 10:47 p.m. by the Cerignola train station, Sauterel told AP. Police confirmed the letter’s contents Friday, three days after it arrived in the mail from Cerignola. She also received two despairing posts from him a week earlier that he had sent from Marseille and Toulon, France, saying he couldn’t live without her, and a series of puzzling envelopes containing thousands of euros. Well good riddance, at least there’s one less psycho in the world. But who the hell commits suicide by jumping in front of a TRAIN!?!? SMH… Source
