Fanboys Rejoice! Shane Black to Direct, Maybe Pen Iron Man 3

Writer-director Shane Black is reportedly in negotiations to direct Iron Man 3 , taking over from series helmer Jon Favreau for the threequel, which is already slated for release on May 3, 2013. But hey, no pressure! Two years should be plenty of time for the guy who wrote Lethal Weapon in six weeks. Besides, Black’s got plenty of qualifications that should inspire fanboy confidence. Is James Franco Your New Man Behind The Curtain In Oz: The Great And Powerful?

Well, this is a horse of a different color. After Robert Downey, Jr. had to drop out playing the huckster Wizard of Oz for Sam Raimi’s new adult re-imagining, the studio had their heart set on the other resident weirdo of Hollywood, Johnny Depp, to take on the role. But Depp passed and now there’s a new oddball contender: professional multi-hyphenate James Franco .

‘A Very Large Turd on a Very Thin Stick’: Marlon Brando Writes to 26-Year-Old Charlie Sheen

Long before Charlie Sheen was holed up in Las Vegas, trying to decide which of three porn stars he liked best , he was a just-turned 26-year-old scamp looking to have a birthday party so kick-ass that someone like Marlon Brando would want to attend. Alas, feeling like “a very large turd on a very thin stick” will often prevent even the greatest among us from having a good time.

Which New Actress Grossed Over $1 Billion at the Box Office This Year?

Ready for some shocking monetary figures that will put your $9/hour filing paychecks to shame? According to Forbes, Leonardo DiCaprio grossed $1.1 billion at the global box office in 2011 thanks to the fearsome twosome of Shutter Island and Inception . Okay, maybe DiCaprio’s perch on top of this year’s highest-grossing list is not that shocking. What is surprising, though, is which young actress finished just behind the actor, grossing over $1 billion. Any guesses?

George Clooney Set for Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity

Well, then! Warner Bros. announced today that George Clooney will replace Robert Downey Jr. in Alfonso Cuaron’s highly anticipated — and perhaps actually happening — Gravity . Clooney will co-star alongside Sandra Bullock in the space drama, though his part is of the supporting variety. What does this mean for that report about Clooney’s involvement in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. with Steven Soderbergh? Perhaps another addition to the Ridiculous Casting/Development Rumors list is needed. [ Deadline ]

The A-Team’s Sharlto Copley on Budgets, Apartheid and Going Off Script

While this summer’s big-budget adaptation of the ’80s TV hit The A-Team (out this week from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment) may not have been the franchise tentpole its studio hoped to get for the money it spent, the action extravaganza did confirm the star quality of Sharlto Copley , who first turned up on our pop culture radars after his starring role in the 2009 Best Picture nominee District 9 .

The 7 Directors Who Should Replace Jon Favreau on Iron Man 3

“I am happy that I had the opportunity to establish the world that these characters can now play in I look forward to seeing what others can do playing in the same world.” Those are the words of Jon Favreau , as he leaves directorial duties on Iron Man franchise behind for good. Which director will Marvel try to lowball — excuse me, “lure” — into that Favs-created world for Iron Man 3 ? Ahead, Movieline offers seven suggestions.

Jon Favreau Out as Iron Man 3 Director

OK, not a huge surprise considering a lot of Favreau’s recent comments about the state of Marvel Studios, but it’s still sad to read reports that Jon Favreau has decided not to direct the third chapter of the Iron Man saga. Favreau recently told MTV, “This whole world … I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys.” So, yeah. That doesn’t sound like a guy itching to sign on for another go around. (His rep did not immediately return Moveline’s requests for comment; Deadline drew confirmation for Robert Downey Jr.’s side.) But look on the bright side: This totally creates an opening for Mike Leigh . [ Vulture ]
