Sundance is Hip, Red State Fuss Overblown, and 6 Other Talking Points From Robert Redford & Co.

Among the topics at hand today as Robert Redford held court in Park City, Utah to open the 2011 Sundance Film Festival: The Sundance Institute’s commitment to artists, their plans for global domination, how the fest is getting with the times ( Twitter !), and of course, Kevin Smith’s Red State . Because even in a wide-ranging convo about the storied indie mecca that Redford built, Smith’s attention-grabbing, not-screening-for-press Christian homosexual murder pic had to steal the spotlight. Highlights of what Redford, festival director John Cooper, and Executive Director Keri Putnam had to say (including awkward chatter about marketing “riff raff” and rival fest Slamdance) after the jump.

30 Straight Actors Who Have Gone Gay For a Film Role

While Richard Chamberlain and John Travolta might agree that Hollywood is still not a safe place for leading men and women to be open about their sexuality, the entertainment industry has embraced and rewarded the heterosexual men and women willing to play gay on-screen. The latest example is Mickey Rourke, who has confirmed that he too will join that bandwagon by playing Welsh rugby star Gareth Thomas (who announced that he was gay just last December) in an upcoming biopic. In honor of this role — which, hell, might win Rourke the Oscar that evaded him for The Wrestler , when he lost to someone on this very list — Movieline reviews which hetero actors have gone gay or transsexual for a role, and which were awarded Academy Awards along the way.

Robert Redford: Obama Should Use Gulf Spill to Push ‘Decent Energy Policy’

Robert Redford, one of the most popular and succesful actors of our age, has joined with other entertainers, including Sir Paul McCartney and Rosie O’Donnell in encouraging the Obama administration to actively politicize the Gulf crisis and use it to push through on energy policy. In an interview with ExtraTV, Redford said that Obama should “Grab this moment in history and get a decent energy policy.” He also said “Here’s a moment in our history where he [Obama] should grab leadership and run with it.” He said that “We blew it in the late seventies,” referring to laws like the National Energy Act, National Energy Conservation Policy Act and the Energy Policy and Conservation Act made in the wake of the OPEC embargo and the Three Mile Island nuclear disaster. Redford has long combined his interest in liberal and environmentalist politics with his career as an actor and film maker, producing The Motorcycle Diaries, based on the memoir by Che Guevara and contributing money to Democratic candidates 58 percent of the time. He added that the government needs to start planning for the end of oil and sustainable energy now. Apparently, the failure of the plans from the 70’s does not phase his faith in the ability of the government to plan energy policy. He did say that BP is responsible for the spill and the government needs to make them pay. Meanwhile, unlike McCartney, O’Donnell and Redford who urge political action, Kevin Costner has funded the development of machines which can aid tremendously in the clean up, using centrifuges to separate up to 99 percent of oil from water, despite prohibitive federal regulations preventing them from being developed. Costner has contributed money to Al Gore’s past campaigns and campaigned for Obama in Colorado. At least one celebrity is doing something useful regarding the spill.

Betty White Calls Sandra Bullock A ‘Lifelong Friend’ On ‘The View’

‘Golden Girls’ star also recalls her friendship with the late Rue McClanahan. By Jocelyn Vena Betty White on “The View” on Monday Photo: ABC Among the many topics Betty White discussed during her stop by “The View” on Monday (June 14), the “Golden Girls” star talked about how well Sandra Bullock addressed her personal life at the MTV Movie Awards earlier this month, when she accepted the Generation Award. “She’s doing fine and, bless her heart, I was so proud of her that night that she didn’t avoid the subject, she addressed [telling everyone], ‘Don’t worry about me. I’m doing fine,’ and she meant it,” White said of her co-star in “The Proposal.” “We had a great visit backstage.” White said that the two actresses became close on the set of the hit movie. “We became lifelong friends on ‘The Proposal,’ ” she said. “She’s one of the most special people I’ve ever met. Too bad she’s not good looking, but otherwise …” White also opened up about the loss of her other lifelong pal, Rue McClanahan, who died earlier this month. The two starred on “The Golden Girls” together some 25 years ago, and White said they always kept in touch after the show ended in 1992. “I talked to her three days before we lost her,” White said. “She lived in New York and I lived on the West Coast. We talked every three, four weeks. She was getting back [after some health complications], so we thought she was doing well. But, unfortunately, it surprised us.” With her much-hyped stint on “Saturday Night Live” behind her, White is looking forward to her next gig on the small screen, the TV Land sitcom “Hot in Cleveland” that also stars Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick. “Well, because there’s four of us naturally there’s a comparison [to ‘Golden Girls’], but it’s totally different … the chemistry between us,” she shared. “They truly love each other and it shows.” So, what’s next for White? ” I’m ready for Robert Redford, whenever he is!” she joked. Stephenie Meyer’s ‘The Host’ Could Begin Filming Next Year

‘Twilight’ author’s first adult novel is well on its way to the big screen. By Christoper Campbell Stephanie Meyer Photo: MTV News With the film installments of her “Twilight” novels not yet fully completed, Stephenie Meyer is already well into the development of her next film franchise. According to Deadline.com , the adaptation of the author’s first adult novel, “The Host,” could go before cameras as early as next year. Published in 2008, the book involves benevolent yet parasitic aliens who have taken over the minds of almost all the humans on Earth. Upon its release, Meyer described the plot to MTV News as ” ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers,’ if the aliens had won.” Although financing is not yet in place and no definite shooting schedule is planned for the sci-fi/horror hybrid, producer Steve Schwartz divulged that “Truman Show” Oscar-nominee Andrew Niccol is currently working on his third draft of the screenplay, with the author’s close involvement. Niccol is also signed on to direct the film. Schwartz, who is now budgeting the project with co-producers Paula Mae Schwartz and Nick Wechsler, again noted that Meyer handpicked the filmmaker because Niccol’s directorial debut, “Gattaca,” is one of her favorite science-fiction films. However, his hire was not immediate. “We spent time with Andrew,” Schwartz explained. “Listened to his vision, introduced Andrew to Stephenie and she responded. There is very good chemistry in this group. Stephenie is a very smart collaborator, and she had an intuitive strong hunch he would be the right guy. Based on the script we’ve seen, we think she was right.” Fans will have to wait and see if Meyer is also right about her dream cast for the film, which she told MTV News in 2008 includes Robert Redford, Matt Damon and both Ben and Casey Affleck. Another uncertainty is when — or if — Meyer will ever finish her two planned sequels to “The Host.” Regardless of whether or not the adaptation spawns further novels or movies, a 2011 shoot could put “The Host” in theaters before the “Twilight Saga” ends, depending on when the second part to the two-film adaptation of “Breaking Dawn” is released. Plus, with Meyer’s announcement of the “Eclipse” spin-off novella “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner,” there’s now a tease that Summit Entertainment could extend the hot vampire film series even further than a fifth installment. Would you go see the film version of “The Host” in theaters? Let us know in the comments! For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
