Race Matters: Black NFL Ref Requested Not To Officiate Any Redskins’ Games Due To Their Disrespectful And Offensive Name

This guy really earned his stripes ! First Black Referee To Work Superbowl Reveals He Asked Not To Work Redskins Games Mike Carey took a stand against racism in the NFL by silently protesting for years in his refusal to work for an organization he felt was being hateful with their stubborn resolve to keep a Native American slur as their team name. According to Washington Post reports via NY Daily News: Mike Carey, who officiated games for 24 years before retiring in 2013, told the Washington Post that he told the NFL he didn’t want to work the Redskins’ home or away games because of their disrespectful nickname. “Human beings take social stances,” Carey, the first African-American referee to work a Super Bowl, told the Post. “And if you’re respectful of all human beings, you have to decide what you’re going to do and why you’re going to do it. “In America we’ve learned that respect is the most important thing that you have. I learned it from my parents, my schools, from my faith. And when you learn there’s something that might not be as respectful as you like, when you come to terms with it, you have to do something about it.” “I know that if a team had a derogatory name for African-Americans, I would help those who helped extinguish that name. I have quite a few friends who are Native Americans. And even if I didn’t have Native American friends, the name of the team is disrespectful.” The NFL apparently had no problem with his request, as the Washington Post research showed that Carey didn’t work a Redskins game after Week 1 of the 2006 season. “The league respectfully honored my request not to officiate Washington,” he said. “When they were making assignments, I said I’d like to be excluded from those assignments.” Carey added he never talked to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell about the matter, instead going through the league office. Seriously we all can learn something from this example. All these people who compromise their values on the daily because it’s “part of the job” need to know it’s entirely possible to stand up for your beliefs and still be an exemplary employee. APImages

Nike NFL Uniforms: Hit or Miss?

The world of fashion met the world of professional sports in Brooklyn today, as some of the NFL’s biggest stars gathered with representatives from Nike and Commissioner Roger Goodell to unveil new uniforms for the league. Dubbed the Nike Elite 51, the shirts and pants are meant to be more elastic and lighter. As you can see by this Chicago Bears mockup, the actual look varies little: “The performance is so important for the athletes,” Goodell said. “What we tried to do is innovate. Even if the look doesn’t change, there’s innovation… There’ll be more to come.” Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens, Alex Smith of the San Francisco 49ers and Wes Welker of the New England Patriots were among the stars who modeled the new uniforms on stage. Said Super Bowl hero Victor Cruz of the Super Bowl of the champion New York Giants: “They’re tight. You can’t get pulled or snagged on. That’s the biggest thing for me: making sure that I’m sleek and I’m fast and I can’t be grabbed or held.”

Breaking News: Football Back! Players Approve NFL Owners Labor Deal!

Bout damn time!! Now it can be said with certainty: Get ready for some football! NFL players voted to OK a final deal Monday, days after the owners approved a tentative agreement, and the sides finally managed to put an end to the 4 1/2-month lockout, the longest work stoppage in league history. “This is a long time coming, and football’s back,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said, “and that’s the great news for everybody.” At a joint appearance outside the NFL Players Association headquarters, Goodell and NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith were flanked by some of the owners and players who were involved in the talks. They spoke shortly after the NFLPA executive board and 32 team reps voted unanimously to approve the terms of a deal. “We didn’t get everything that either side wanted … but we did arrive at a deal that we think is fair and balanced,” Smith said. Owners overwhelmingly approved a proposal Thursday, but some unresolved issues still needed to be reviewed to satisfy players; the owners do not need to vote again. The sides worked through the weekend and wrapped up the details Monday morning on a final pact that runs for 10 years, without an opt-out clause, a person familiar with the deal told the AP on condition of anonymity. DeMaurice Smith, NFL Players Association President said this about the deal: “I know it has been a very long process since the day we stood here that night in March,” Smith said. “But our guys stood together when nobody thought we would. And football is back because of it.” Well ladies and gentlemen, after sitting on pins and needles for month we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief because our Sunday’s have been saved (no offense sweet baby Jesus). Goodell: No need for 4 preseason games (AP)

Commissioner Roger Goodell says the NFL no longer needs four preseason games, but the league should change its offseason training programs. NFL and union officials discussed adding two games to the regular season when they met Wednesday for their first negotiating session since February. Under the proposal, the schedule would switch from four exhibition and 16 regular-season games to two and 18.

Commissioner Goodell On Vince Young Fight: ‘Right Now We Are Gathering Facts’

Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke to reporters following a speech he gave to high school players in Queens. He says the NFL is still in the fact-gathering stage regarding the strip club fight involving Vince Young . There isn’t enough information, right now, to make a decision on possible discipline he says. The NFL previously said they would look into the Young situation.

Vince Young Arrested in Strip Club Fight, Asks God to Please Prevent NFL Suspension

Following a melee at a local strip joint, Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young was issued a Class C assault citation in Dallas, Texas, early Sunday morning. No arrests are planned and the former University of Texas star’s citation , while for a misdemeanor charge, likely will entail a fine that he will pay and that’s it. The incident is said to have occurred at a Dallas strip club early Sunday morning after a man at the venue insulted, verbally or otherwise, Young’s alma mater. A Dallas police source said that Vince Young was attempting to exchange cash, possibly for single dollar bills, at Club Onyx when all hell suddenly broke loose. Apparently, someone made disparaging remarks about the Longhorns, and then flashed an upside-down “Hook ‘em, Horns” hand gesture. A brawl ensued. Vince Young hopes the Almighty won’t let the NFL suspend him . Today, the NFL star apologized to his teammates for the whole strip club fight, noting that he’s praying to God that the NFL won’t “come down hard.” After practice today, Young said, “I just made a mistake, I made a big mistake even being there and I let that guy provoke me into doing what I did.” “I pray to God that [league Commissioner] Roger Goodell doesn’t come down hard on me, because I definitely want to be here for my teammates.” Right, because 1. God saw the fight, and 2. Even if He did, He’d be more concerned about Young suiting up this fall than any pleas for forgiveness. Check out a video of the Vince Young fight here … Vince Young Fight
