The Great Gatsby Review: Does Visual Masterpiece Live Up to Expectations?

The dazzling commercials for this sure-to-be box office smash proclaim that it’s going to be the summer of  Gatsby . But does it live up to enormous expectations? While there’s sure to be a division of opinions between literary purists, Luhrmann fans, and regular ol’ moviegoers, there is simply no doubt that this film is a piece of work. As for this critic, I’m staunchly on the side that loved this interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel  The Great Gatsby. Director Baz Luhrmann is known for his distinct, somewhat over-the-top, storytelling style. His past cinematic achievements include  William Shakespeare’s: Romeo and Juliet  and  Moulin Rouge . Both of those films are stories that have been told before, but Luhrmann has a way of re-imagining the stories and adding his own eccentric and decadent spin on things. This is exactly what he did for  The Great Gatsby . For all of the book fans out there, fear not as the most important prose from the book is included in the film. However there are times when the words are spinning out at you in 3D fashion and dancing over scenes. The story does not stray too often from the novel which is something that should keep longtime  The Great Gatsby fans satisfied. As for the characters, I found that casting best friends in the role of Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby was brilliant. Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio have a longstanding relationship that probably helped them sink into their roles easily. In my opinion, the casting was simply perfect. Maybe Isla Fisher is a little too hot to play Myrtle the mistress, but she does a job well done. Any hardcore book fans know that Daisy really has dark hair, but Carey Mulligan nails the role of Daisy’s dainty, naive, charming but fickle debutante. DiCaprio has the glamour and allure of an old-Hollywood movie star, making him the perfect choice for Jay Gatsby. His star power allows him to pull off the excess and lavish character that is the infamous Gatsby. Without giving too much away, the film does add some elements that are lacking from the novel. For instance, there was more substance in the love scenes between Daisy and Gatsby. You visually understand their affair and his longing, whether it be the iconic green light or the tabs he’s kept on her over the years. Luhrmann took a tale of the American Dream of happiness and wealth and put a modern day touch on it that surely would’ve suited a man like Jay Gatsby, and probably F. Scott Fitzgerald himself. The soundtrack includes world famous acts like Jay-Z and Fergie, but it’s Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful” that plays throughout most of the movie and puts you in touch with the story. If moviegoers are unimpressed by all else, there is absolutely no doubt that the film is visually stunning. Aside from the 3D factor, which surprisingly works, the production of the party scenes and landscapes are vivid and visually enchanting. The costume design done by Luhrmann’s wife Catherine Martin is impeccable, flawless, and likely to win an Oscar for it’s portrayal of the Art Deco period. All in all, it is worth the trip to the theater and the extra few bucks for 3D to see this new take on the literary classic  The Great Gatsby . Who knows, maybe you’ll be inspired to throw your own version of the West Egg’s most notorious parties this summer?  RATING: 4/5 Stars

Lily James to Play Cinderella in Live-Action Adaptation

At this point, it seems you have to be named Lily in order to play a fairy tale princess in a live-action adaptation. Sorry “Jessica,” not gonna happen. And you can just forget about it, “Claire.” Same goes for you, “Lilly” with two L’s. Lily James has been cast to play Cinderella in the new live-action adaptation. That’s after Lily Collins took on the role of Snow White in last year’s  Mirror Mirror . James, best known for her role of Lady Rose on Downton Abbey , beat out Bella Heathcote, and Margot Robbie for the role. Kenneth Branagh will direct the film, which is set to begin production this fall for a 2014 release.

WTF?? Actor Orlando Jones Dresses Up In White Face And Announces That He’s Replacing Tyler Perry As “Madea”

Uhhhh….ok Orlando Jones To Replace Tyler Perry As “Madea” On camera cross-dressing actor and producer Tyler Perry is finally hanging up his Madea hat. Tyler recently announced that he would stepping down as Madea to shift more of his focus to other ventures and that he would be handing over the reigns of the Madea character to fellow actor Orlando Jones. Huffington Post NAACP Award® nominee Orlando Jones will now play the role of Mabel “Madea” Simmons in the next installment of the Madea franchise entitled “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas.” He replaces creator Tyler Perry, who is focusing on the partnership between his company and Oprah Winfrey’s struggling OWN network that was announced last October. “It is with mixed emotion that I announce that I will be unable to portray Madea in the next chapter in her journey,” Perry said. “The character has been such a gift and it was my hope and intention to play this role again in the upcoming film. But due to my commitments to the exciting new venture I am launching with OWN and Discovery Communications, I must now put all my energy into our new slate of shows that will launch on the network later this year” “Tyler and I are obviously very sad that he won’t be able to continue,” new director Bill Duke said in a statement. “Working with him on this project has been a delight and has brought us both so much joy and laughter. Right now Tyler needs to focus on the health of his new venture and the future. We love and respect him immensely and support him during this time. We are very grateful to Orlando for stepping in so quickly.” Jon Feltheimer, CEO of Lionsgate said, “While we are saddened to hear that Mr. Perry won’t be appearing in the next film, we are still eager to have A MADEA CHRISTMAS in theaters this holiday season and look forward to Orlando Jones giving a great performance.” Are you feeling Orlando Jones as Madea?

Do You Hear The Academy Singing? The Daunting Oscar Odds Of ‘Les Miserables’

The Academy Award nominations brought good news and bad news to one of my favorite movies of the year.   Les Misérables   eight nominations including Best Picture, Actor, for Hugh Jackman , and Supporting  Actress, for Anne Hathaway . That ain’t chopped liver, but the highly  publicized snubbing of its director Tom Hooper  along with its absence in all-important bellwether categories like screenplay and editing means what was once considered a front runner is now a real long shot to actually win Oscar’s top prize. You have to go all the way back to 1931’s Grand Hotel  to find a Best Picture winner that didn’t have at least one of those three nominations. In the face of those daunting stats,   Les Misérables  would be a shocking Best Picture winner, but if any movie deserves the upset , it’s this one. A certified box office hit domestically, it just opened to huge numbers over the weekend in England and looks to be a continuing international smash. “Do You Hear The People Sing?   is not only the stirring anthem from Hooper’s adaptation, it’s an apt metaphor for the impact of  a revolutionary film about revolutionary spirit. Hooper took great risks in the telling of  Les Misérables  — and he succeeds. Twenty-seven years in development, the film looked like it might never be made when The King’s Speech director came up with the novel idea of shooting the cast’s musical performances live instead of taking the usual movie-musical tack of pre-recording the songs and dubbing them in later. Without that artificial technique hampering the actors, Hooper and the creative team from the original musical — Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schoenberg and Herbert Kretzmer — along with the adaptation’s screenwriter, William Nicholson, found a way to meld the dramatic impact of Victor Hugo’s classic, gritty novel with the theatricality of the beloved stage production for a movie musical experience that hasn’t been seen on the big screen in years. Emotion is at the core of this remarkably entertaining and powerful film. Jackman , with his considerable musical chops, was the obvious choice to play petty-criminal-made-good Jean Valjean, and he delivers even in the difficult two-and-a-half-octave range the role requires.  Although Russell Crowe  can’t  match his co-star in the singing department, he still scores as a potent Javert.   Hathaway breaks hearts as the doomed Fantine, as does Samantha Barks in the role of Eponine.  And though Amanda Seyfried’s portrayal of Cosette is not so dramatically challenging, she still manages to shine in the role. That said, it’s Eddie Redmayne , as Marius, who  threatens to steal the whole show with an impassioned performance that heralds the arrival of a major new movie star. Hooper’s aesthetic choice to shoot the emotional moments in unrelenting close up is a good one, and this is a musical  that even those who hate musicals should find satisfying in its dramatic pull and remarkable ability to move us.
