Wiz Khalifa Drops First O.N.I.F.C. Single, ‘Work Hard Play Hard’

Pittsburgh MC confirms to MTV News video was shot in his hometown. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Lacsina Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. After Wiz Khalifa and Stargate found success with the 2010 #1 hit single “Black and Yellow,” why wouldn’t they team up again for Khalifa’s upcoming O.N.I.F.C. LP? On Monday (April 23), Wiz dropped “Work Hard Play Hard,” the first single from O.N.I.F.C. The new track isn’t as bright as “Black and Yellow” or “Roll Up,” the second Stargate-produced Rolling Papers hit, but it is still as effective. “It’s crazy. We shot the video in Pittsburgh,” Wiz told MTV News last week on the set of Maroon 5’s “Payphone” video . “It’s wild, just linking back up with Stargate, making another hit and gearing up for the second album, O.N.I.F.C. We’re about to do it all over again.” The bouncy track begins with a kinetic drum pattern that builds as the producers add a booming bass and dark synth melodies. “Diamonds all on my brain n—a/ Gold watches, gold chain n—a/ Yeah, my money insane n—a,” Wiz spits, clearly enjoying the spoils of his success. When he first arrived as a certified rap star in 2010, with his Taylor Gang fanbase in tow, Wiz sported an array of tattoos, tank tops, camouflaged shorts, Converse sneakers and rolled marijuana joints as his uniform. It is a style the Pittsburgh rapper feels many have adopted from him, and now he is ready to switch. He makes note of that on “Work Hard Play Hard” when he rhymes: “If I’m in the club, I get a 100 stacks/ I’m always rollin’ up, so I get love for that/ Them n—as stole my swag, but I don’t want it back.” While the song’s verses are filled with rapper angst, Khalifa shows that he hasn’t lost his penchant for delivering catchy and melodic hooks. “The bigger the bill, the harder you ball/ Well, I’m throwin’ mine, ’cause my money long,” he sings on a chorus that is sure to stick in the brains of his dedicated fans. O.N.I.F.C. isn’t scheduled to drop until August, but already, the TGOD captain is promising a fun ride. He has already secured guest spots from Chris Brown, Cam’ron, Pharrell and, of course, the members of his Taylor Gang crew. About the album, Wiz said, “It’s gonna be amazing. People should look for the complete package, so I don’t wish to separate anything from anything. The single is amazing, ‘Work Hard Play Hard.’ It’s gonna be stupid.” What do you think of Wiz Khalifa’s “Work Hard Play Hard”? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Wiz Khalifa

Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller, Kendrick Lamar Bring Worlds Together On Tour

Wiz Khalifa tells MTV News what fans can expect when the threesome hit the road this summer. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Lacsina Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Wiz Khalifa is excited to embark on a summer tour with Mac Miller — or is he? MTV News caught up with the Rolling Papers MC on the set of Maroon 5’s “Payphone” video shoot in Los Angeles, where he talked about the upcoming Under the Influence of Music Tour . “Mac’s my man,” Wiz said, before he jokingly backtracked. “Actually, I really don’t like him like that. That’s why I usually try to stay away from him. There’s no way I could avoid him for too much longer, so they made me go on tour with him.” Khalifa and Miller both hail from Pittsburgh, and are both signed to local independent label Rostrum Records. Despite the duo’s close proximity, the two MCs don’t have a ton of collaborations under their belts. The pair hooked up on “Keep Floatin’,” a track off of Mac’s 2011 mixtape Best Day Ever, and on 2009’s “Cruise Control.” Next up is the Under the Influence of Music Tour, which kicks off July 26 in Cincinnati. “It means everything, Mac’s my little homey. It’s good for his fans; it’s good for everybody who’ve been wanting to see us do what we do together,” Wiz said. TDE’s Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q and Taylor Gang’s Chevy Woods are also on the bill. “Chevy’s my guy. I grew up with him so I know he’s gonna bring a lot of crazy energy,” Khalifa promised. “Kendrick and Schoolboy got a bunch of fans on their own and people that they’re gonna entertain as well, so I think it’s just gonna bring a lot of different worlds together as well as create some new energy that hasn’t been done before.” Kendrick, who spoke with MTV News earlier this week, says he is pumped for the upcoming run. “Man, I’m anticipating a whole bunch of energy. They gonna let me down if I don’t get the energy,” he said. “I gotta get a whole bunch of wild motherf—ers who just wanna party and hear good music.” Tickets will ceremoniously go on sale on the stoner holiday of April 20 (Friday) at 4:20 p.m. on Ticketmaster and LiveNation. Kush Chronic-les: Snoop Dogg Set To Release New Book “Rolling Words” Made From Real Smokable Rolling Papers! [Video]

The art of getting high has gone to a whole ‘nother level Snoop Dogg Releases New Book “Rolling Words” Made From Real Rolling Papers How cool is this? Snoop Dogg has figured out a way for his fans to get high off of reading. The veteran rhyme-slinger, with the help of San Francisco agency Periera & O’Dell, has created a smokable lyrics book called ‘Rolling Words.’ According to psfk, the book features lyrics of the Doggfather’s classic songs like ‘Gin & Juice,’ ‘Nuthin’ Like a ‘G’ Thang,’ ‘Beautiful’ and ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot,’ among others, printed on rolling paper. The book cover was made out of hemp-like material with the spine doubling as a match-striking surface. In addition, the pages are perforated for easy tearing and sharing. A limted-run of the book will be available for concertgoers who attend the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif. The event takes place on April 13-15 and April 20-22, which Snoop is the co-headliner with Dr. Dre. Snoop says he created the book “So people can always remember, you can roll with an expert or you can roll with Snoop.” Images via SplashNews/Vimeo Source Hit the flipper to watch Snoop explain what his newest literary venture is all about.

Wiz Khalifa Breaks Through To Hottest MCs List!

Wiz dukes it out with Big Sean, but the Pittsburgh spitter’s gold-selling debut and sold-out tour make him one of MTV’s Hottest MCs in the Game. By MTV News staff Wiz Khalifa Photo: Getty Images Wiz Khalifa stays high, so as expectations for his debut album, Rolling Papers, shot through the roof, the Pittsburgh rapper made good by delivering a gold-selling LP last March — with multiple hit singles to back it. That success and more was enough to take him from MTV’s 2010 Hottest Breakthrough MC to the Hottest MCs in the Game VII list. Not only did the Taylor Gang general snag the #2 spot on the Billboard 200 in his first week out — behind Britney Spears — he also dropped a collaborative album with Snoop Dogg ( Mac & Devin Go to High School ), blessed fans with the Cabin Fever mixtape, and sold out shows around the world on his Rolling Papers Tour. When it was all said and done, the Kush and Orange Juice spitter clocked in a reported $11 million and snagged the #11 spot on Forbes ‘ Hip-Hop’s Top Earners list . Want to join the debate? Just hit us on Twitter using the hashtag #HottestMC! “First of all, he won the Hottest Breakthrough MC and really fulfilled the promise that we all knew that he had,” MTV News Senior hip-hop Writer Rob Markman said. “To be this young and have this many accomplishments, almost three albums in a year, you gotta give it up to dude.” HOT STREAK Albums: Rolling Papers and Mac & Devin Go to High School (with Snoop Dogg) Selected Mixtapes: Cabin Fever Singles: “Black and Yellow,” “Roll Up,” “No Sleep” and “Young, Wild & Free” (featuring Snoop Dogg and Bruno Mars) Street Bangers: “On My Level” and “Taylor Gang” Key Guest Appearances: Tinie Tempah’s “Till I’m Gone”; DJ Drama’s “Oh My”; T-Pain’s “5 O’Clock”; and Cee Lo Green’s “Bright Lights Bigger City” Meteoric Metrics: Notched a #1 rap album with his certified-gold debut, Rolling Papers ; scored three platinum plaques for his “Roll Up,” “No Sleep” and “Young, Wild & Free” singles. Saw his 2010 single “Black and Yellow” peak at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 2011. Wiz also clocked in at #11 on Forbes ‘ Hip-Hop Top 20 Earners list, raking in $11 million last year. Business Ventures: Started his Taylor Gang label by signing rap veteran Juicy J and up-and-coming model/rapper Lola Monroe Tours: Rolling Papers Tour Monumental Moment: Wiz Khalifa racked up a series of wins last year, but after Rolling Papers went gold, the Pittsburgh spitter proved he could turn his Internet mixtape grind into a bankable, mainstream hustle. Forecast: After scoring a gold plaque for his debut, Wiz is already preparing a new mixtape ( Taylor Allderdice ) and his sophomore album ( O.N.I.F.C. ) for a 2012 release. He has already promised to outdo Rolling Papers. The criteria to be considered a Hottest MC are based on a combination of factors: impact, buzz, sales, lyrics, swag and the intangibles. The Taylor Gang captain meets all of them. His impact was huge, just look at the way veteran artists like Snoop and Juicy J lined up to collaborate with the youngster. Wiz’s buzz kept him a part of the overall 2011 hip-hop conversation and he notched impressive sales numbers. Khalifa also has a strong sense of style, as seen in his New York Times style magazine feature last September. And his relationship with Amber Rose kept him in the tabloids, adding an intangible element to his growing celebrity. After each member of MTV’s Hip-Hop Brain Trust submitted their personal Hottest MCs lists, Wiz landed the #8 spot. But then things took an interesting turn. After a heated roundtable debate and subsequent vote, Khalifa was bumped to #9 and G.O.O.D. Music upstart Big Sean snatched the #8 slot. The argument was fiery, and though most of the panelists agreed that Wiz’s success was remarkable, some contended that Rolling Papers was a critical disappointment and Khalifa had lost some steam in the past few months. “It’s a good album, but I think with the momentum and expectations, it didn’t live up to the hype,” said Yomi Desalu, MTV’s senior director of music and talent programming strategy. “But I just feel like I want him up there because of the full year, of the full stride, of the Rolling Papers Tour, of what he [accomplished],” Rebecca Thomas, an MTV News editor and writer, argued. If Wiz’s final position on the “Hottest MCs in the Game” list is debatable, his impact on hip-hop over the past year is irrefutable. With a bunch of accolades already under his belt, Khalifa has nowhere to go but up! Tune in to MTV2 on Sunday, February 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT to catch ” MTV2 Presents: Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts ,” then watch “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” immediately after at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT before capping the night off with ” Sucker Free Certified ” at 11 p.m. ET/PT. Wiz Khalifa Shows Chevy Woods ‘A Different Way’

Formerly known as Kev tha Hustla, Taylor Gang MC tells Mixtape Daily about being on the Rolling Papers Tour. By Rob Markman Chevy Woods Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Chevy Woods Wiz Khalifa ‘s Taylor Gang is no one-man army: Meet Pittsburgh spitter Chevy Woods. About eight years ago, back when he went by the name Kev tha Hustla, the MC who hails from the Hazelwood section of the ‘Burgh met Wiz at ID Labs studio. Immediately, the two collaborated and hit it off, forming a brotherly bond and a new crew called the Taylor Gang. Woods developed a passion for rap while he attended Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania, but the street’s allure was strong. It wasn’t until 2009 when Wiz, who was seeing his star rise, convinced his bud to leave the block alone and focus on music. “He was like, ‘Come on, man. I’m gonna show you a different way. Let’s make some money, real money. Leave that sh– alone,’ ” Chevy told Mixtape Daily of his decision to switch hustles. “I just cut the street sh– out.” As Kev tha Hustla, Chevy was buzzing and had already released tapes like The Corner’s Correspondent and Animal , but after a name change, Woods scored a breakout tape earlier this year when he dropped Red Cup Music . “I think I found myself when I put that tape out. I really found a style for myself. Some laid-back, cool music. Drink a little bit, smoke a little bit,” he said. Now, CW is on the Rolling Papers Tour , where he opens for Big Sean and Khalifa. The crowd has been receptive to his set as he performs songs like the party-starting “Jimmy Fallon” and smoothed-out “Campaign” from Red Cup . “It be nights where I be with my palms sweating before I go on, and then after I get off I be like, ‘Man, I’m ready to shed a tear,’ because this sh– is crazy to me,” he said about the love he’s gotten on the road. “It’s new, it’s fresh, and I’m just trying to take it all in.” Next up for Chevy is his The Cookout mixtape, set to drop in August. On it, Woods promises a soundtrack for those summertime barbeques. And while the tape will be billed as a solo affair, he confirms that his buddy Wiz will appear on about half of the tracks. “That’s where I’m trying to take you: to my backyard with my mom on the grill and my homeys around,” he explained. “I just want them to hear where I come from.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out .
