Bolitics: Condoleeza Rice Front Runner For Republican VP Candidate? She Says No Thanks

Condoleeza Rice Not Interested In Being Mitt Romney’s Running Mate Condoleezy says she’s not trying to be down with Money Mitt and his pro-life politics. Sarah Palin on Thursday night said she thinks Condoleezza Rice – the new it-girl in Mitt Romney’s veepstakes rumor mill – would make a “wonderful vice president,” but said she’d be more comfortable with a nominee “who had that respect for all innocent, precious, purposeful human life, and showed that respect being a pro-life candidate.” Rice has previously classified her position on abortion as being “moderately pro-choice,” something Palin suggested during her Fox News appearance might be a liability for a GOP ticket already boasting historically moderate Romney. But the 2008 vice presidential nominee largely gave her blessing to the possibility of a Rice pick anyway, reasoning, “it’s not the vice president that would legislate abortion, and that would be Congress’ role. And we’ll keep that in mind.” Asked by CBS News’ Charlie Rose in late June how she would respond should Romney offer her the job, Rice said unequivocally, “Not gonna happen – and no.” Still, after the Drudge Report placed her atop Romney’s short list Thursday night, citing her strong showing at the former Massachusetts governor’s Utah retreat several weeks ago, her “no” hasn’t stopped talking heads from weighing in on what the former secretary of state could bring to Romney’s campaign. Well, when Sara “Pitbull In Lipstick” Palin backs something, we’re usually convinced that it’s a bad idea .  Maybe Condoleezy is righ to sit this one out after all. Source Image via Wenn

Jane Pitt, Brad Pitt’s Mom, Writes Anti-Gay, Pro-Mitt Romney Editorial

Brad Pitt has been a vocal advocate for gay rights, so it came as a bit of a surprise to learn that his mom write an editorial in her local Missouri newspaper that supports presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s conservative views on homosexuality. Springfield’s News-Leader confirms that the author is Brad’s mom . Jane Pitt’s letter was primarily penned to express support for Romney, in response to a previous News-Leader editorial urging readers to shun the Republican’s bid to unseat President Barack Obama because of his Mormon beliefs. In her response, which was published on Tuesday, she wrote: “I think any Christian should spend much time in prayer before refusing to vote for a family man with high morals, business experience, who is against abortion, and shares Christian conviction concerning homosexuality just because he is Mormon.” “Anyone who does not vote or writes in a name is casting a vote for Romney’s opponent, Barack Hussein Obama – a man who sat in Jeremiah Wright’s church for years and did not hold a public ceremony to mark the National Day of Prayer.” Obama, she writes, is “a liberal who supports the killing of unborn babies and same-sex marriage. I hope all Christians give their vote prayerful consideration because voting is a sacred privilege and a serious responsibility.” It was more pro-Romney and anti-Obama than anti-gay, but nevertheless, Jane Pitt makes her views on same-sex marriage and abortion clear. In any case, it’s a total 180 from the views shared by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who have been ardent proponents of gay marriage for years. Last year, following the passage of marriage-equality laws in New York, Brad said, “No state should decide who can marry and who cannot.” “Thanks to the tireless work of so many, someday soon this discrimination will end and every American will be able to enjoy their equal right.” Brad and Jane Pitt clearly both have strong opinions on the subject, and both have a right to those opinions. With whom do you agree? Same-sex marriage : Presidential election 2012 :

Race Matters: Gap Between Life Expectancy Of Blacks And Whites Reaches An All Time Low

US Racial Gap In Life Expectancy At All Time Low This is a good look: The gap in life expectancy between blacks and whites in the United States, long attributed to socioeconomic disparities and a range of other factors, continued its historical decline between 2003 and 2008 and is now the smallest ever, Canadian researchers say in a new report. The study, which drew on data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other sources and was published in the June 6 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association, found an increase in life expectancy for both men and women, black and white. The researchers from McGill University in Montreal noted a convergence in the rate of deaths from HIV and heart disease as contributing to the narrowing of the life expectancy gap. However the biggest factor in the narrowing of the gap, the researchers said, was an increase in the number of deaths among whites attributed to prescription drug abuse. “It is mostly a good news story, since life expectancy has increased for both groups,” says Sam Harper, an epidemiologist at McGill and lead author for the study. However, the findings that point to prescription drug abuse are “a potential cause for concern.” The study found that the gap in life expectancy between black and white women of non-Hispanic origin closed to 3.7 years in 2008, down from 4.6 years in 2003. For men, the gap has closed to 5.4 years, down from 6.5 years. Life expectancy at birth for white men now stands at 76.2 years, up from 75.3 years, compared with 70.8 years for black men, up from 68.8 years. For white women, life expectancy rose from 80.3 to 81.2 years, and for black women from 75.7 to 77.5 years. The researchers looked at data compiled by the CDC and others and found that differences in the rates of heart disease, diabetes, homicide, HIV, and infant mortality remained the main reasons for the racial gap. Among men, heart disease and homicide were the two primary contributors; for women, the two contributors were heart disease and diabetes. But the narrowing recorded over the five-year span of data points to shifts in “unintentional injury” rates, as well as HIV and heart disease, the study’s authors conclude. Most notably, within the category of unintentional injury, fatal poisonings were the leading increase among whites – by 58 percent for men and 74 percent for women between ages 20 and 54. Dr. Harper said 80 to 90 percent of the unintentional poisoning deaths appear to be drug-related, and a big proportion of that due to opiates and abuse of prescription drugs such as oxycodone – a fact that mirrors growing public awareness of the problem of prescription drug abuse. The authors pointed out that in earlier studies that looked at the period between 1993 and 2003, the life expectancy gap between blacks and whites had narrowed by nearly two years for men and one year for women.
