6 Black Candidates Poised To Make History On Election Day 2017

Read more here:

O ne year removed from the most divisive election in modern history, voters were heading back to the ballots in a series of pivotal political contests across the country. Several intriguing battles have taken center stage and include African-American candidates. Here are six of them to watch: Atlanta Mayor Eyes are on the Atlanta mayoral race because Mary Norwood , a 65-year-old city councilwoman, has a chance to become the city’s first White mayor in more than four decades. At one point, Norwood held a double-digit lead in the polls. However, one of the latest surveys showed that one of her competitors, Keisha Lance Bottoms , has pulled ahead of her. Walsh and become the city’s first African-American mayor. The Boston branch of the NAACP released a scathing 175-page report criticizing Walsh for not keeping his promises to communities of color. One things to look for is whether Black voters will punish the mayor at the polls. I am the sum total of all who have shown me love. I want to pay it forward. #WeAreBoston #BosMayor17 https://t.co/senkkfHOJC — Tito Jackson (@titojackson) November 6, 2017 Detroit Mayor Coleman Young was Detroit’s first African-American mayor. Now his son, Coleman Young II, is trying to walk in his father’s footsteps. But he’s competing against a popular White mayor, Mike Duggan . Even though the city’s population is more than 80 percent Black, many analysts said voters wanted to give Duggan a chance to continue his economic recovery efforts. Sen. City Councilwoman  LaToya Cantrell  and former judge  Desiree Charbonnet  topped a field of 18 candidates in October to compete in a two-candidate runoff, scheduled for Nov. 18. Analyzing the road ahead,  The Advocate  reported that Cantrell, who emerged as a champion of the working-class after Hurricane Katrina, had the support of prominent individuals in the White business community. Her opponent had the backing of the city’s Democratic U.S. Rep.  Cedric Richmond , who is chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, as well as key players in New Orleans’ political establishment. Where did LaToya Cantrell and Desiree Charbonnet travel on the public's dime? https://t.co/uBMNjvCm8I — NOLA.com (@NOLAnews) November 3, 2017 St. Paul Mayor The St. Paul Police Federation not only  targeted African-American candidate Melvin Carter for a racist attack that included the creation and distribution of a political flier that suggested he was somehow responsible for a surge in gun violence, pinning that claim on the theft of two guns from Carter’s home. However, the scheme backfired, with scores of voters and elected officials condemning the police union. Carter won the support of several top Democrats, including U.S. Sen. Al Franken. Governor Justin Fairfax , the Democratic candidate for Virginia lieutenant governor, was running for office amid racial tension within his party and from his GOP opponent. Ralph Northam , who was running for governor, created uproar in the party when he omitted Fairfax from a group of campaign fliers that lists Democrats running for statewide office. Meanwhile, Fairfax also received subtle racist attacks from the right. His Republican opponent,  Jill Holtzman Vogel , raised a question during their final debate about whether Fairfax can “talk intelligently” about issues. If Fairfax wins, he will become the first African-American elected statewide in Virginia since  Douglas Wilder  became governor in 1989. Dwayne Johnson: No, Really, I May Run for President!

Dwayne Johnson really wants to make sure you know what he may be cooking up for his future. Several months after rumors first circulated that the actor may run for President in 2020 , Johnson spoke to GQ and confirmed that the really is considering this possibility. Explains the magazine’s latest cover subject: “A year ago, it started coming up more and more. “There was a real sense of earnestness, which made me go home and think, ‘Let me really rethink my answer and make sure I am giving an answer that is truthful and also respectful.” Johnson first broached this seemingly ridiculous topic upon being crowned Sexiest Man Alive by People last year. “I started to really think,” he told the publication in November, adding of his mindset: “Could I make a difference? Could I surround myself with really brilliant people to help me make decisions? Do I care about this country? “And when the answers continued to come up yes, then I thought, there’s a good chance.” If you’re thinking this sounds utterly preposterous, due to Johnson’s lack of political experience, consider two things: His finishing move as a WWE Superstar was named The People’s Elbow. Donald Trump is currently President. Both Trump and Hillary Clinton asked Johnson for his endorsement last year, he says. And while this doesn’t make him a qualified candidate on its own, it does make him realize that folks out there care about his opinion. “I feel like I’m in a position now where my word carries a lot of weight and influence, which of course is why they want the endorsement,” Johnsol tells GQ. “But I also have a tremendous amount of respect for the process and felt like if I did share my political views publicly, a few things would happen.” Such as? “I felt like it would either (a) make people unhappy with the thought of whatever my political view was. And, also, it might sway an opinion, which I didn’t want to do.” This is why Johnson turned down all overtures for an endorsement last election. But in light of all that’s happened in just over 100 days since Trump took office, Johnson has a lot to think about. He’s already an expert at giving political responses. Just consider the way he refuses to overtly slam Trump when asked for his take by GQ, simply saying instead: “Personally, I feel that if I were president, poise would be important. Leadership would be important. Taking responsibility for everybody. “[If I didn’t agree with someone] on something, I wouldn’t shut them out. I would actually include them.” Based on the results of November’s election, someone with this attitude will never be elected to The White House. View Slideshow: 13 Reasons Why Dwayne Johnson is the Sexiest Man Alive There is one area in which Johnson is happy to speak out, however. He wants everyone to know what he thinks about the administration’s Muslin ban, and that is this: “I completely disagree with it. I believe in our national security to the core, but I don’t believe in a ‘ban’ that bans immigrants. I believe in inclusion. “Our country was built on that, and it continues to be made strong by that.” Not a bad starting point for a Presidential platform, huh? Would you vote Dwayne Johnson for President of the United States? Yes! No! Only if Vin Diesel is his running mate. View Poll »

Raven Gates’ Ex-Boyfriend: I Gave Her Orgasms AND She Said She Loved Me! The Bachelor LIES!

Raven Gates’ ex-boyfriend Hunter Hayes has a bone to pick with the popular show, and it has nothing to do with The Bachelor spoilers . Well, unless you’re talking about his spoiled reputation as a man. Thanks to Raven’s claim that she’s never told a man she loves him, or had an orgasm (at all), Henry has become a subject of fascination. And hilariously, he’s calling out the show in an interview with Us . During Gates and Nick Viall’s fantasy-suite date on Monday’s episode, she told the Bachelor that she’s never said “I love you” to a man. Nor has she experienced, even once, what an orgasm feels like. Yes, this happened on national TV, making fans immediately wonder what the Hoxie, Arkansas, native’s ex-boyfriend Henry was doing. Or not doing, to be more accurate. They dated for two years! He was also discussed on an earlier episode in which Gates alleged that while they were dating, she caught him banging another woman.  At that point, Raven said, she attacked her beau with a high-heeled shoe, an image that brings a smile to our face (cheating aside).  Hunter’s definitely not among those laughing about it, however. “Comments made by Raven about our relationship are skewed and untrue,” Henry tells the website. “However, I wish her all the best.” “Definitely not true about the whole orgasm thing,” he adds. Sure man. You just keep telling yourself that okay? “And she has told me she loved me multiple times,” says Hunter, who’s in the running for Worst BF of the 2010s honors, “just for the record.” Anyone buying what Henry is selling here? Would The Bachelor actually invent wholesome, sweet Raven Gates’ “secret”  as a storyline? Actually, they very well might, come to think of it … We put nothing past Mike Fleiss and company, though at the same time it feels hard to believe Raven would go out and lie like that. Right? Or would she do that if they told her to? In any case, Bachelor Nation fans have been fascinated by Gates’ claim that she has never climaxed from any sort of sexual activity. After the episode aired, a GoFundMe account popped up online seeking to raise money to buy the 25-year-old boutique owner a vibrator. An altruistic endeavor if ever there were one. Raven is one of Viall’s final three ladies, along with Vanessa Grimaldi and Rachel Lindsay, after he eliminated Corinne Olympios Monday. (We imagine Corinne and her platinum vagine have had about 14 orgasms, manually and/or with the aid of someone else, since then.) It was during Gates’ overnight date with Nick that the topic of the Big O came up, and Viall was at a loss for words like the rest of us. Gates had just come out of a bad breakup with Hunter Henry (never trust a dude with two first names) when she applied for the show. She says she’s slept with only him (and apparently, he didn’t do a very good job of it), before meeting and building up their great chemistry. Whether that’s enough to get her the final rose over Vanessa (we know Rachel is out) remains to be seen, along with any orgasmic action. Monday’s episode left off with a mini-cliffhanger. Raven ultimately accepted Nick’s invitation to the Fantasy Suite, where she met up with Viall and his uncomfortable looking turtleneck. Did he ditch said sweater and become THE ONE to take Raven to the Oh-Zone for the first time in her life on that hot night in Finland? Bachelor Nation can only hope. Jesus Take The Wheel: 18-Year-Old Muslim Teen Ben Keita Found Hanged From A Tree

A Modern Day Lynching? Washington Islamic Teen Found Hanging This kind of thing makes us really nervous. The family of a Washington State teen found hanging from a tree is looking for answers after the medical examiner changed the cause of death in the case from suicide to undetermined. 18-year-old Ben Keita went missing November 26, but his body was not found until January, hanging from a tree near his home in the Lake Stevens area, according to KIRO reports . Family members say Ben showed no signs of being suicidal. “Ben was very happy young man,” the teen’s father, Ibrahimi Keita. “He was already in the running start program going to Everett Community College. No history of depression or anxiety. any psychological breakdown at all whatsoever.” The medical examiner’s office says Keita’s cause of death was changed for two reasons; the rope Ben was hanged with was tied 50 feet high in the tree, and a K-9 search of the same area weeks was conducted several weeks earlier, with no sign of his body. The Washington Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations have asked the FBI to investigate the case. “We just want to make sure that the expertise, the experience and the human resources of the FBI are brought to make sure everything is comprehensively investigated, no stone is left unturned,” Washington CAIR executive director Arsalan Bukhari told KIRO. In a statement, the Seattle office of the FBI said it is “communicating with our police partners.” “We are aware of circumstances of the individual’s death and will review them with consideration of federal law,” read the statement. “If warranted, we may conduct further investigation. A review does not necessarily result in the opening of an investigation.” Lake Stevens police said in a statement Wednesday that the case remains open and they are awaiting results for the state crime lab in order to close the case.
