The Mad Science of Fringe: The Walternate Strikes Back

We went Over There in the aptly named opener to the two-part Fringe finale last night — over there, of course, being the other side, where an ID is a “show-me,” Martin Luther King Jr. is on the 20, and Agent Olivia Dunham is about 100 times cooler than she is over here. In addition to those revelations, however, Walter Bishop and Co. offered up a ton of fodder for the show’s scientific canon. But did these revelations jibe with what we already know?

Russell Crowe Curses, Flees Radio Show

A grumpier-than-usual Russell Crowe today fled a BBC talk-show appearance when the host dared to suggest his Robin Hood accent featured “hints of Irish.” Wrong, wrong, wrong, said Crowe. “You’ve got dead ears mate. You’ve seriously got dead ears if you think that’s an Irish accent,” he continued. “Bollocks … I’m a little dumbfounded you could possibly find any Irish in that character. That’s kind of ridiculous. It’s your show. Whatever.” Pressed further if he was going for Northern England, the Aussie spat, “No, I was going for an Italian, yeah. Missed it?” Toss in a few F-bombs and an early exit… you know, the usual. [ Guardian ]

REVIEW: Ugly, Interminable Robin Hood Steals From Audiences

In days of yore, the myth of Robin Hood was embodied by brave and noble men: Douglas Fairbanks outwitting the king’s thugs by sliding down the length of a slippery medieval brocade curtain; Errol Flynn striding jauntily into a great hall with a dead stag draped around his shoulders like a royal’s stole. But, as Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood suggests, those are heroes from a lost age. Today’s Robin Hood is far more complex, a tortured soul suffering from repressed-memory syndrome, a freedom fighter whose perpetual scowl speaks of a highly attuned sense of justice. Today’s Robin Hood is the spirit of freedom disguised as a grumpy gus in a leather jerkin, and he carries something far heavier than legend — or even Errol Flynn’s stag carcass — on his shoulders: a backstory.

Cannes Film Festival Kicks Off With ‘Robin Hood’

‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,’ ‘Fair Game’ and more films are set to premiere at the fest. By Jocelyn Vena Russell Crowe stars in “Robin Hood” Photo: Universal Pictures Not even rain could dampen the mood as the Cannes Film Festival kicked off Wednesday (May 12) in the French resort town that gives the fest its name. The A-list stars are expected to turn out to premiere several big flicks at this year’s event; Russell Crowe, Naomi Watts and Shia LaBeouf are just a few whose films will be presented at the annual festival, running until May 23. Director Tim Burton leads the judges’ panel, which includes Benicio Del Toro and Kate Beckinsale. The Crowe-starring and Ridley Scott-directed “Robin Hood” opens the festival. “This is the sort of film that you hope for and then you wait for because you get to step into a completely different world,” Crowe told MTV News of taking the role in the period flick. “You actually get to time-travel.” Among this year’s buzzed-about films are the sequel to 1987’s “Wall Street,” the LaBeouf-starring “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” which sees the young actor teaming with the original flick’s Michael Douglas. Naomi Watts has two films at Cannes: “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger,” co-starring Josh Brolin and directed by Woody Allen, and the Sean Penn CIA thriller “Fair Game.” Crowe’s “Robin Hood” isn’t slated for the competition portion of the festival; neither are “Wall Street” and “Dark Stranger.” Also at Cannes, Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling will screen “Blue Valentine,” which follows a married couple’s deteriorating union through flashbacks. “It’s a racy movie, so it’s hard to watch those scenes with so many people,” Gosling told MTV News in January, when the film showed at Sundance. “I watched it with my mother, she was beside me. I gave her an iPod. And when the naughty scenes came on, I pressed ‘play’ and covered her eyes.” Which Cannes films are you most looking forward to? Let us know in the comments below! Cannes Film Festival Kicks Off with French-Bashing Robin Hood

The Cannes Film Festival officially opened today with the 10 a.m. press screening of Ridley Scott’s nearly two-and-half-hour epic Robin Hood . The film, a sort of Robin Hood Begins , attempts to retell the familiar story of how Robin Hood (a chiseled Russell Crowe) and his Maid Marian (Cate Blanchett) became the archenemies of the pusillanimous and pugnacious British King John.
