Taylor Lautner’s Post-‘Twilight’ Career: What’s Next?

Now that ‘Stretch Armstrong’ is off Lautner’s schedule, ‘Twilight’ Tuesday takes a closer look at the young actor’s future. By Kara Warner Taylor Lautner Photo: Jeff Kravitz/Film Magic Now that we’ve had a day or so to digest the news that “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner will not be gracing the big screen as super bendy, slightly superheroic Stretch Armstrong , it’s time to turn the focus of this week’s “Twilight” Tuesday toward analyzing this latest development in Lautner’s post-Jacob career. Word on the street is that Lautner dropped out of the film due to scheduling conflicts, but exactly what conflicts he may or may not have are the mystery. Last we heard, the teen heartthrob was in talks with Oscar winner Gus Van Sant to make a small-budget film based on a nonfiction article from The New Yorker. A quieter role in a more indie film could be just what Lautner needs post-“Twilight.” “He’s got the right determination and ambition to continue on, even through bumps in the road,” IMDb Managing Editor Keith Simanton told MTV News of Lautner’s staying power. “Someone he reminds me a little bit of is Hayden Christenson. People make fun of him and have never seen his performance in ‘Shattered Glass,’ and he’s also very good in ‘Life as a House.’ Because the only thing people know him from are big movies, the franchises that are in some ways an albatross in the way of a career.” Boxoffice.com ‘s Phil Contrino suggested that Lautner focus on more grown-up projects with big-name, respected directors. “He can, and most likely will, rebound. The key to his success will be picking the right directors to work with,” Contrino said. “He needs to stay away from teen-skewing flicks and go for adult, like Robert Pattinson is doing by working with David Cronenberg .” Lautner reportedly dropped out of the superhero film “Max Steel” and extreme-flying flick “Northern Lights” to make room for “Stretch,” which means he has plenty of time from now until next November to do a film before the promo machine kicks back into gear for “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” And then there’s the adaptation of the popular YA novel “Incarceron,” which Lautner was circling in its development stages the last time we checked in with him. What should Taylor Lautner do next? Tweet @karawarner to sound off on this week’s “Twilight” Tuesday! ‘Chronicle’ Rooted In ‘Complete Reality,’ Stars Say

‘It’s a movie about what would actually happen if teenagers got superpowers,’ Dane DeHaan tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Dane DeHaan in “Chronicle” Photo: Alan Markfield/ 20th Century Fox In the buzzworthy action/drama hybrid “Chronicle,” out Friday, three friends’ lives are forever changed when they encounter an otherworldly substance and structure that somehow gives them extraordinary abilities. The movie is shot mostly via the “found footage” or “POV” format and revolves around high school students Andrew (Dane DeHaan), Matt (Alex Russell) and Steve (Michael B. Jordan). When MTV News caught up with the three stars of the film recently, we asked them to explain how “Chronicle” is different from every other superpower and found-footage film out there. “It’s a movie about what would actually happen if teenagers got superpowers,” DeHaan said. “And I think that, for the first time, it deals with that issue in modern day in complete reality, which is the person who gets the superpowers probably won’t be the best person in the world and only want to save other people in the world from their problems.” “From the beginning, you’re invested in Andrew and Steve and Matt,” Jordan added. “It’s not just, ‘What monster is going to be popping out of this building?’ You really follow the characters throughout the movie and care what happens to them.” Because the audience spends so much time getting to know the three main characters, Russell said it makes for an especially intense thrill ride when the boys discover just how powerful they are and things start to spiral out of control. “It’s action-packed, it’s incredible in that way, but it in no way relies on that,” Russell said of the film’s impressive effects and aerial stunt work. “The characters are very layered, the relationships are complex and beautiful, and something you get really invested in it, and I think that makes it hit home so much harder when things start to go awry.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Chronicle.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Taylor Armstrong Accuses Late Husband of Spying, Paranoia

It’s been far too long since Taylor Armstrong bashed her late husband in public. But, don’t worry, the latest issue of Us Weekly contains excerpts from the reality star’s disgusting upcoming memoir , “Hiding from Reality.” In the book, Taylor describes Russell as a paranoid stalker, someone who constantly asked her about past sexual partners and even posed as a potential employer in order to run a background check on his wife with her alma mater. She even found a tape recorder under her home office desk once. “For the next nearly six years, I always assumed I was being recorded in the car and at home,” Taylor writes. “I was always careful to make sure the content of my conversations was very clear.” Russell supposedly defended his actions by saying he had “been burned before” and just wanted to get to know his wife as well as possible. Years after that discovery, Armstrong added, “I went into my email settings and found that he had set it up so that all of my emails were forwarded to him the moment I received them.” Taylor says she never changed the setting or asked Russell about this issue, and it’s not like we can get his take on the allegations. What a sad, pathetic, money-hungry woman.

Why Katy Perry Can’t EVER Forgive Russell Brand

Russell Brand is entering Justin Timberlake territory at Us Weekly apparently. No matter how little evidence they may have, they’re convinced Russell is a bad dude. Whenever Katy Perry gets around to writing material for her third album, the tabloid erroneously claims, she’s got plenty of dark, painful memories to draw from! The reason for that? Russell is (allegedly) penning a book about her! Despite public denials from a rep, the British comic plans to cover all the nitty-gritty, sometimes ugly details of their failed 14-month marriage … Us claims. “Katy is insulted and feels betrayed that Russell has treated her so poorly,” a pal to the “Firework” singer, 27, tells Us . “She will never forgive him. Ever.” For the record, Katy says no one speaks for her . Although Perry is supposedly “in panic mode” regarding her ex’s memoir plans, she’s back to work on her ongoing concert tour, commercial shoots and more. She’s taking pains to “limiting interactions” with Brand, another source says of Katy. “He’s being so atrocious that she feels like she never knew him.” FYI, he’s really not , as far as we can tell.

Katy Perry And Russell Brand: Experts Dissect Divorce Announcement

Holiday announcement ‘is a time-honored celeb tradition. It gets buried a bit because of all the year-end news,’ celebrity-news editor says. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: WireImage Katy Perry and Russell Brand might have decided to announce their divorce over the weekend for a good reason. Celebrity-news experts explain to MTV News why celebs choose to make big announcements on holidays. David Caplan, a celebrity-news editor who has worked at People and Star , noted that confirming separations during a busy time falls under “PR 101.” “Burying a celeb split over a holiday is a time-honored celeb tradition, really kicked off by Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey back in the day, when they finally split and announced it the night before Thanksgiving,” he explained. “It’s a smart tactical move on their end, as it gets buried a bit because of all the year-end news.” See a timeline of Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s relationship. Caplan added that it’s not just about a slower news cycle, but also a slower work schedule for those in the celebrities’ inner circle and those who get paid to follow celeb news. “From a logistics point of view, news outlets, particularly the celebrity media, are either shut down or working with a skeletal staff, so pursuing the story and advancing it is difficult since it simply means there are less reporters available to dig further and to disseminate the story to the public,” he noted. “Plus, celeb publicists are typically not too available over a holiday, which makes getting info harder for the journalist, which means less gets disseminated to the public. “And the less that gets disseminated to the public, particularly anything that Katy or Russell’s publicists didn’t send out, the happier Katy and Russell are, since they’re, in a way, controlling the flow and content of information about their split to the public.” While more details begin to leak from inside their now-defunct relationship, one expert explained that it’s only a matter of time before even more specifics come out. “Holidays are always the time when celebs think they bury bad news, but those days are over,” explained Rob Shuter, columnist for HuffPost Celebrity. “Now the news cycle is 24/7, 365 days a year. I’m sure over the next few weeks, we will all know exactly what went wrong.” Perry and Brand announced their split Friday, after one year of marriage . While Brand released a statement about the separation, as of press time, Perry had yet to speak about it. Katy Perry And Russell Brand’s Divorce ‘Not A Surprise’

‘They were a sort of odd, mismatched pair,’ celebrity-news expert says. By Jocelyn Vena Russell Brand and Katy Perry in 2010 Photo: Dave J Hogan/Getty Images While fans of Katy Perry and Russell Brand might be surprised by the news of their divorce, those who work in the celebrity world are hardly shocked by the news. Celebrity-news experts say that from the beginning, the pair struck them as an odd couple, despite their equally charming and eccentric personalities. “From the get-go, I thought they were a sort of odd, mismatched pair,” David Caplan, a noted celebrity-news editor who has worked at publications such as People and Star, explained to MTV News. “She’s so glamorous, pop and sexy, and he is diametrically not like that. He’s a nice and funny guy, and from my encounters with her, I found her to be funny, have a sarcastic edge and a blast, but they weren’t a match. Plus, she’s more of a partier than he now, so their lifestyles were at odds.” See a timeline of Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s relationship. Despite what anyone may have thought or what rumors about the pair were swirling in the lead-up to the announcement, the twosome always seemed intent on denying the reports. “Katy and Russell’s split is not a surprise,” Caplan said. “It’s one of those celeb splits where the writing was on the wall for months, so much so that they denied any marital trouble on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ several weeks ago, which is uncommon for celebs to acknowledge tabloids reports. “But then came news this week that they had a big blowup and spent Christmas apart,” he added. “Very far apart — she in Hawaii, and he in London. You don’t get much farther apart! Plus, in between ‘Ellen’ and Christmas, there were multiple reports of them on the rocks. And unlike so many other rumblings about celeb couples on the skids, this was totally true, and they clearly decided not to keep it a secret and just put on a happy front.” However, it seems that as much as they wanted to squelch talk of a breakup, in the end, it all came crashing down. “Katy and Russell’s marriage has been under pressure for some time,” said Rob Shuter, columnist for HuffPost Celebrity. “I’m surprised Russell did so many interviews denying the troubles. The truth always comes out. When a married couple choose not to spend the holidays together, you know something is up, if they are celebs or just regular folks.” Perry and Brand announced their split Friday, after one year of marriage . While Brand released a statement about the separation, as of press time, Perry had yet to speak about it. Katy Perry Divorce: Russell Brand Files on Behalf of Both For Family’s Sake

The divorce of Katy Perry and Russell Brand was months in the making, and the pop star was NOT blindsided by the actor/comedian’s filing, reports say. They decided Brand would file the court papers in the divorce because she didn’t want to upset her religious parents, sources close to the couple indicate. Katy and Russell knew the relationship was on the rocks months ago, but didn’t want to bail on the marriage without a concerted effort to work it out. Sadly, both sides ultimately felt “it just wasn’t there.” Katy Perry and Russell Brand in happier times . Katy and Russell were on board with the divorce weeks ago – there was no massive fight that triggered the split – but didn’t want to be in L.A. when the papers were filed. Thus, he went back to England and she went to Hawaii for Christmas. Fans of Katy know her parents are evangelical Christians, who raised her to believe that divorce is morally wrong. Out of respect to Katy and her family, Russell was the one to officially file; It’s unclear how or when Katy will legally respond. Brand released a statement confirming the split but insisting the two will always love each other and remain friends. Here’s hoping that’s true, but don’t bet on a reconciliation. These two appear to have had problems since the get-go. [Photo: WENN.com]
