‘Vice Guide To Everything’ Host Recalls Residential Strip Club

Ryan Duffy discusses meeting Detroit man who runs a 24-hour strip club in dead parents’ house on premiere episode. By Rya Backer Ryan Duffy Photo: Mark Metcalf/ Getty Images A lot happens on MTV’s new series “The Vice Guide to Everything.” Hosts Ryan Duffy, Thomas Morton, and Shane Smith — who also co-founded the magazine that launched the Vice brand 15 years ago — travel to places like Russia, Ghana and North Korea in search of compelling people and their stories, which they’ll share with MTV viewers on Mondays at 11 p.m. Duffy’s adventures this season include getting shot (while wearing a bulletproof jacket) in Colombia and trailing a Mafia-funded pop star in Naples, Italy, but he recently told MTV News he didn’t have to travel far for his most memorable meeting. “I will always very vividly remember meeting Jay Thunderbolt,” Duffy said about the Detroit man who was running a 24-hour all-nude strip club out of his dead parents’ house. Duffy was treated to complimentary shots, got to look through Thunderbolt’s self-defense gear and enjoyed a lap dance from his crew of willing ladies. But the host admitted that he ran up against MTV’s standards team when it came to the footage. “You could show the girl doing the flip on my lap where she put her legs up. She started to spread them, but you couldn’t show the spreading. You had to cut it right before then,” Duffy explained. “Which was fine with me, by the way, because I have a mother and a grandmother,” he added. Thunderbolt clearly made an impression on the rest of the “Vice Guide” family, too, as he was invited to the show’s New York premiere last week with his return flight booked for the next day. “The thing about Jay is he probably hasn’t left Detroit in 30 years. He hasn’t flown in, God knows how long. When we booked him a flight his first question was, ‘How many of my guns can I bring?’ His second was, ‘Could you get me a smoking seat?’ Clearly a little bit dated in his travel plans, but the next day, Jay did not get in the cab we sent to bring him to the airport, or the next cab, or the next one, or the fifth one. And we have no idea whether he ever got on a flight and went home,” Duffy lamented. “So, Jay Thunderbolt could be roaming the streets of New York right now.” “The Vice Guide to Everything” airs Mondays at 11 p.m. ET on MTV. McConnell’s Reality Distortion Field on Tax Cuts

The Republican Senate minority leader has been arguing that the outcome of the midterm elections confers a mandate on Congress to extend the Bush-era tax cuts, which are set to expire Jan. 1. But the bipartisan opposition and an electoral mandate to extend the Bush-era tax cut or block all other legislation is at odds with recent polling of the American public — those whom McConnell and Congress are supposed to represent. A recent CBS News poll indicated that 53 percent of Americans want the Bush-era tax cuts extended only for households earning less than $250,000 per year. Only 26 percent indicated they support extending the tax cuts for all Americans regardless of income level. Among Republicans polled, 41 percent support the White House proposal to extend tax cuts for households earning less than $250,000 and 46 percent support extending all the Bush-era tax cuts. A recent Gallup poll found 44 percent of Americans want to keep the tax cuts but set limits for wealthy Americans, and 40 percent favor maintaining the Bush-era tax cuts for all Americans. A majority in the Gallup poll (57 percent) would set the bar on taxing households at $500,000 rather than $250,000, which is the figure the White House prefers. A majority of Americans believe the tax cuts should be temporary — 45 percent, versus 37 percent who believe the tax cuts should be permanent. In the AP-CNBC poll, 50 percent of Americans were in favor of expiring the Bush-era tax cuts for households earning over $250,000 and 34 percent favor extending the tax cuts for all Americans. Apparently ignoring the signals presented in the polls (which politicians sometimes do), McConnell and 41 other Republican Senators said they would block votes on all legislation, including the nuclear arms reduction START agreement with Russia and an extension of unemployment benefits, unless an extension of the Bush-era tax cuts includes the highest income earners. “Life is a series of choices,” McConnell said in reference to linking a vote on the START treaty to extending all the Bush-era tax cuts. His strategy of holding up legislation, and giving the White House a something-or-nothing “series of choices,” may be working. The White House has said that it is “negotiating” a compromise tax deal in the next few days, which will extend all the Bush-era tax cuts, but not indefinitely. Following the midterm election, McConnell and the GOP have been able to create a reality distortion field surrounding the tax cuts, and the White House and majority of Democrats are about to enter it. added by: TimALoftis

WikiLeaks next target – the banks

Just a day after their big scoop WikiLeaks announced plans to release tens of thousands of internal documents from a major US bank. The revelations will be made public early next year, according to Forbes Magazine.WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange declined to identify the bank, but he said that he expected that the disclosures, which follow his group's release of U.S. military and diplomatic documents, would lead to investigations, Reuters reports. Bank revelation will be a “megaleak” Talking to Forbes, Assange said: “We have one related to a bank coming up, that's a megaleak. It's not as big a scale as the Iraq material, but it's either tens or hundreds of thousands of documents depending on how you define it.”He declined to identify the bank, describing it only as a major U.S. bank that is still in existence.Asked what he wanted to be the result of the disclosure, he replied: “I'm not sure. It will give a true and representative insight into how banks behave at the executive level in a way that will stimulate investigations and reforms, I presume.”He compared this release to emails that were unveiled as a result of the collapse of disgraced energy company Enron Corp.”This will be like that. Yes, there will be some flagrant violations, unethical practices that will be revealed, but it will also be all the supporting decision-making structures and the internal executive ethos … and that's tremendously valuable,” Assange said.”You could call it the ecosystem of corruption. But it's also all the regular decision making that turns a blind eye to and supports unethical practices: the oversight that's not done, the priorities of executives, how they think they're fulfilling their own self-interest,” he said.Assange also told Forbes that WikiLeaks has material on many businesses and governments, including Russia, and that it has some documents on pharmaceutical companies, which he did not identify. added by: sbacker

David Gregory to Hillary Clinton: Might GOP Hurt U.S. Prestige and Obama on World Stage

David Gregory is clearly concerned that if Republicans don't vote in favor of the START treaty with Russia, President Obama's international image, as well as American prestige abroad, will be damaged. On Sunday's “Meet the Press,” Gregory asked Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, “Is this going to potentially be a problem with the president not being able to get what he wants on the world stage because of Republicans?” (video follows with transcript and commentary): read more

First Planet Found Beyond Our Galaxy

A New Planet — from Beyond the Galaxy Read more: http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,2032054,00.html#ixzz15hGdcBa9 By Michael D. Lemonick Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010 Picture: This artist's impression shows HIP 13044 b, an exoplanet orbiting a star that entered our galaxy, the Milky Way, from another galaxy. AFP / Getty Images Read more: http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,2032054,00.html#ixzz15hH2S4xq Billions of years before the Sun was born, the Milky Way galaxy flicked out its gravitational tongue and slurped down a tiny neighboring galaxy that had ventured too close. The evidence for that ancient act of cosmic cannibalism is the still-digesting remains of the meal: a handful of relatively nearby stars known as the Helmi Stream, whose weird orbits — above and below the plain of the galaxy — are a tipoff to their weird origin. Now one of those stars has a second claim to fame. HIP 13044, as it's unglamorously known, has a planet whirling around it — the first planet ever found from outside the Milky Way. Aside from its extra-galactic origin, the planet itself, found with a medium-size telescope at the European Southern Observatory in Chile, and described in a new paper in Science, isn't especially remarkable. It's a bit bigger than Jupiter and orbits its parent star in about 16 days — a “year” so short it would once have been considered impossible for so giant a planet, until multiple discoveries of many similar worlds proved such a revolution rate to be pretty common. (See pictures of the labor of space exploration.) It's the star itself that makes the discovery of a planet surprising, for a couple of reasons. For one thing, its age — perhaps 7 or 8 billion years — means that while HIP 13044 was once much like the Sun, it's gone through a dramatic change of life. As it burned through its supply of hydrogen, the star would have swelled to become a so-called red giant, tens, or even hundreds of times its original size. When that happens to our Sun billions of years from now, Earth will probably be destroyed. Indeed, there's some circumstantial evidence that HIP 13044 may have gulped down a few planets itself, says the paper's lead author Johny Setiawan, of Germany's Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, in Heidelberg. “The star is a fast rotator,” he says, “and theory predicts that if a star swallows a planet its rotation rate should increase.” But the new planet, called HIP 13044b, survived the cataclysm. That's probably because the Jupiter-size world originally occupied a Jupiter-like orbit, much farther from its star than Earth is from the Sun. It spiraled in to its present orbit only after HIP 13044 shrank back to a more dignified size — another common stage of life for stars, which return to their original dimensions when they start burning the helium in their core. A tiny handful of planets have been seen orbiting stars that are currently red giants, but this is the first to be found in the next chapter of a star's life. (See pictures of Russia's cosmonaut training center.) The other thing that makes the star unusual is its composition. The Sun is mostly hydrogen and helium, but it also has significant traces of heavier elements like oxygen, carbon and iron, a quality astronomers call “metallicity” despite the non–metallic nature of some of those elements. “In the Milky Way,” says Setiawan, “the more metals a star has, the more likely it is to have planets.” The reason for that is simple: both stars and planets coalesce out of the same vast pool of dust and gas. The higher the metallicity, the bigger the supply of building material and the likelier that some will be left over to form planets. Dwarf galaxies like the one in which HIP 13044 was born, however — and like the two dozen or so that still orbit the Milky Way — have stars that are notably metal-poor. It was unclear until now whether that meant they'd also be planet-poor. The fact that Setiawan and his colleague Rainer Klement, also of the Max Planck Institute, found one so easily suggests this isn't the case. “Either they were incredibly lucky,” says Eric Ford, a planet-searcher at the University of Florida, “or planets aren't uncommon around stars like these.” Whatever the answer, HIP 13044b is clearly a very different world from any we've seen before, one that — without the aid of celestial metals — formed in a very different way. And that in turn suggests that the field of planetary science, which seemed so tidy and settled as recently as the 1990s, is still full of surprises. added by: EthicalVegan

Rockefeller Wants Government to Shut Down Fox and MSNBC

Senator Jay Rockefeller, great-grandson of John D. Rockefeller and nephew of David Rockefeller, wants to yank both Fox News and MSNBC off the air. “I hunger for quality news, I’m tired of the right and left,” Rockefeller said. “There is a bug inside of that wants to get the FCC to say to Fox News and MSNBC… out, off,” he said during a hearing on retransmission negotiations between broadcasters and cable providers. “We have journalism that is always ravenous for the next rumor, but insufficiently hungry for the facts that can nourish our democracy.” “I hunger for quality news, I’m tired of the right and left,” Rockefeller said. He failed to mention that both networks are cable television channels and the FCC has little if any regulatory power over their content. Millions of Americans have tuned out the false right-left paradigm of the corporate-dominated news channels in favor of alternative news sources on the internet. For the establishment, this trend is highly disturbing and must be turned back. In March of 2009, Rockefeller said the internet is the “number one national hazard” to national security. “It really almost makes you ask the question would it have been better if we had never invented the internet,” Rockefeller mused during the confirmation hearing of Gary Locke, Barry Obama’s choice for Commerce Secretary. He then cited a dubious figure of three million cyber “attacks” launched against the Department of Defense every day. “Everybody is attacked, anybody can do it. People say, well it’s China and Russia, but there could be some kid in Latvia doing the same thing.” The former Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell and Obama’s current director Admiral Dennis C. Blair, agreed with Rockefeller about the internet and national security. It is not likely the FCC will suddenly move to close down Fox and MSNBC, even if it had the power to do so. Both are prized Operation Mockingbird assets that specialize in disseminating government propaganda and perpetuating “democracy” ruled by bankers and transnational corporations. Jay Rockefeller is apparently concerned with the tenor, not the content of corporate news. As a blue blood, Rockefeller is irritated by the guttersnipe character of what passes for mainstream news in this country. Rockefeller’s comments once again demonstrate the arrogance of “elected officials” who believe they have the power to control large corporations like Government Motors and dictate what sort of news and even entertainment Americans should consume. http://www.infowars.com/rockefeller-wants-government-to-shut-down-fox-and-msnbc/ added by: im1mjrpain
