‘The Vice Guide To Everything’ Goes Everywhere, Because No One Else Does

Vice co-founder Shane Smith and company bring their worldwide adventures to MTV Monday at 11 p.m. ET. By James Montgomery “The Vice Guide To Everything” co-founder Shane Smith Photo: MTV News Over the past year, “The Vice Guide to Everything” stars Ryan Duffy, Thomas Morton and Shane Smith have spent quality time with Yemeni rebels, Palestinian car thieves and Russian mobsters … to name just a few. And they did it basically because no one else will. “Well, I think journalism has changed … there was a time we actually believed what the news told us,” Smith, co-founder of Vice, the magazine and burgeoning media conglomerate that proudly goes places others won’t (both literally and physically), told MTV News. “And I think after the last two wars, where mainstream media was completely co-opted by the government and, in its own admission, failed in what it was supposed to do, that young people got totally disenfranchised … and because mainstream news media failed its job, people like us had to come and fill the vacuum.” And on Monday (December 6) at 11 p.m. ET, Smith and his cohorts will begin fighting that good fight on MTV, with the premiere of “The Vice Guide to Everything,” a 30-minute, wholly irreverent, oft eye-opening look at people and places that the mainstream media wouldn’t dare cover, let alone spend time with. Armed with only cameras, the occasional translator and the odd “fixer” (basically a local hired to ensure they’re not killed) these three went there, and came back with some incredible stories. “I was most scared in Yemen, when we were shooting with the rebels and the Houthis and tribal leaders who have death warrants on their head,” Smith explained. “The secret police arrested us, took all of our stuff, and we had all these cards of every rebel leader that the government wanted to kill … so the guy who helped us out there actually had to bribe the secret police to give us the tapes so we could wipe them … then we were able to get out.” “[There were] these car thieves in the West Bank that, because of all the restrictions on trade — importing car parts, specifically — if you want a car in Palestine, you basically pay some guy, he sneaks into Israel, he steals a car, brings it back and nobody finds you,” Morton added. “And we were hanging out with these guys who basically do that for a living, and … we steal a car together, and then a day later, he and a couple of his goon buddies showed up and tried to shake us down. The problem was they only spoke Arabic, our field producer spoke a little bit of Arabic, but we were basically relying on a translator for them to shake us down. And it was the most dragged-out event on the planet. … It just kept going for so long that, by the end of it, everybody was visibly bored with the proceedings, and they gave up.” And despite the near-death experiences, the “Vice” crew said that their show isn’t about pushing the boundaries just for the thrill of it (though, certainly, that plays a part). It’s to tell compelling stories and introduce American viewers to the kinds of things that go on every single day, no matter how hard the news networks try to ignore them. “[It’s] not that we’re Walter Cronkite or anything, but that whole era is over,” Smith said. “So, I think one of the things we do is we just show a story that resonates with people … and that’s what we’re trying to do with this show, which you should watch, Mondays at 11.” “The Vice Guide to Everything” airs Mondays at 11 p.m. ET on MTV.

BBC News – List of facilities ‘vital to US security’ leaked

A long list of key facilities around the world that the US describes as vital to its national security has been released by Wikileaks. The US State Department in February 2009 asked all US missions abroad to list all installations whose loss could critically affect US national security. The list includes pipelines, communication and transport hubs. Several UK sites are listed, including cable locations, satellite sites and BAE Systems plants. This is probably the most controversial document yet from the Wikileaks organisation. The definition of US national security revealed by the cable is broad and all embracing. In addition to obvious pieces of strategic infrastructure like communications hubs, gas pipelines and so on, it contains, amongst other things, a cobalt mine in Congo, an anti-snake venom factory in Australia and an insulin plant in Denmark. The US missions were asked to list all installations whose loss could critically impact the public health, economic security or national security of the United States. In Britain, for example, the list ranges from Cornwall to Scotland, including key satellite communications sites and the places where trans-Atlantic cables make landfall. “What the list might do is to prompt potential attackers to look at a broader range of targets” A number of BAE Systems plants involved in joint weapons programmes with the Americans are listed, along with a marine engineering firm in Edinburgh which is said to be “critical” for nuclear powered submarines. 'Targets for terror' The geographical range of the document is extraordinary. If the US sees itself as waging a “global war on terror” then this represents a global directory of the key installations and facilities – many of them medical or industrial – that are seen as being of vital importance to Washington. No wonder then that the Times newspaper in London has published the story under the headline “Wikileaks lists 'targets for terror' against the US”. Some locations are given unique billing. The Nadym gas pipeline junction in western Siberia, for example, is described as “the most critical gas facility in the world”. Continue reading the main story The Main Leaks So Far Fears that terrorists may acquire Pakistani nuclear material Several Arab leaders urged attack on Iran over nuclear issue US instructs spying on key UN officials China's changing relationship with North Korea Yemen approved US strikes on militants Personal and embarrassing comments on world leaders Afghan leader Hamid Karzai freed dangerous detainees Russia is a “virtual mafia state” with widespread corruption and bribery Afghan President Hamid Karzai is “paranoid and weak” Comments on the extent of alleged corruption in Afghanistan Chinese leadership was 'behind hacking of Google' Wikileaks cables: Key issues It is a crucial transit point for Russian gas heading for western Europe. In some cases, specific pharmaceutical plants or those making blood products are highlighted for their crucial importance to the global supply chain. Of course the critical question is that raised by the Times newspaper's headline: Is this really a listing of potential targets that might be of use to a terrorist? The cable contains a simple listing. In many cases towns are noted as the location but not actual street addresses. That, of course, is not going to hinder anyone with access to the internet. There are also no details of security measures at any of the listed sites. What the list might do is to prompt potential attackers to look at a broader range of targets, especially given that the US authorities classify them as being so important. It is not perhaps a major security breach, but many governments may see it as an unhelpful development. It inevitably prompts the question as to exactly what positive benefit Wikileaks was intending in releasing this document. Former UK Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind condemned the move. “This is further evidence that they have been generally irresponsible, bordering on criminal,” Mr Rifkind said. “This is the kind of information terrorists are interested in knowing.” added by: Itsbatman_Durr

Mind over matter: Human aura proved by Russian Scientists

A Russian scientist is trying to convince people they can change the world simply by using their own energy. He claims that thinking in a certain way can have a positive or negative effect on the surrounding environment. “We are developing the idea that our consciousness is part of the material world and that with our consciousness we can directly influence our world,” said Dr. Konstantin Korotkov, a professor of physics at St. Petersburg State Technical University. visit mattovermatter.com for more science http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6NIUV24vcQ&feature=player_embedded added by: mattovermatter

The return of neo-Nazism in Latvia – Latvian veteran found guilty of fighting again nazism in WWII

The international human rights movement World Without Nazism consider the decision of the ECHR’s Grand Chamber as a review of the results of the Nuremberg Trials at the level of European justice. “It is a very dangerous trend,” the movement's deputy council head Valery Engel said. He took part in a video link-up between Riga and Moscow with Kononov’s participation on Thursday. The event was organized by the Russian Public Chamber. The Kononov case is another sign of the revival of neo-Nazism in Latvia, believes World Without Nazism presidium member Iosif Koren. As former Soviet partisans are persecuted in the country, people “linked to the Waffen SS” are elected to the parliament, he noted. The ECHR should take “an objective, not politicized” decision while reviewing the case, Aleksandr Brod, a human rights activist and the chamber’s member, said. Kononov’s lawyer Mikhail Ioffe is now busy filing an appeal against the Strasbourg court’s decision. There have been few cases in history when such complaints have been considered by the court. “I never thought that in my old age I would be accused by [Latvian and Strasbourg] courts of committing crimes which never took place,” 87-year-old Kononov said during the video link. According to the veteran, the ECHR was “under unprecedented pressure.” This case is being considered as West European countries show their loyalty to “the return of neo-Nazism and rehabilitation of SS forces,” Kononov said. The veteran asked the Russian leadership and “millions of ordinary people” to help him fight against the unjust accusation. The Public Chamber has promised to help Kononov in the future. The Moscow international conference on “World without Nazism – the global goal of the entire humankind” due to be held at the upper chamber of the Russian parliament, the Federation Council, on December 17, will also discuss the case of the Latvian veteran. added by: MotherForTruth

Asian Nations Aim to Double Tiger Population by 2022

Photo: Babirusa , Wikimedia, CC It’s rare that an entire international summit is put together for the sake of a single species — but that’s what’s taking place this weekend, when representatives from 13 Asian nations will head to St. Petersburg to try to map out the future of the tiger. The event is being hosted by Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin, and delegates from India, China, Indonesia, and elsewhere will be in attendance. They’ll attempt to forge a plan to double the remaining population of tigers — there’s only 3,200 of them left — over … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Top Bush Aide Denounces Mark Levin, Malkin, Others as ‘Unhinged…Bolshevik’ Party-Line Enforcers

Former top Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson is a Washington Post columnist, and there is never a better time for right-leaning columnists to lean left than in the last weeks of an election season. (See George Will trashing Sen. George Allen in the last weeks of 2006.) His rant also may have granted Gerson a seat on CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday. Gerson not only denounced Christine O’Donnell as a wacky candidate like Alan Keyes, he denounced “the childish political thought of the Tea Party.” He insisted conservatives were like Bolsheviks. Bloggers like Michelle Malkin and talk show hosts like Mark Levin were “unhinged” against Karl Rove: While Rove’s critique was tough, the reaction in parts of the conservative blogosphere has been unhinged. Michelle Malkin wrote that it “might as well have been Olbermann on MSNBC.” Mark Levin pronounced Rove at “war against the Tea Party movement and conservatives.” “In terms of the conservative movement,” wrote Dan Riehl, “we should not simply ignore him, but proactively work to undermine Rove in whatever ways we can, given his obvious willingness to undermine us.” Gerson didn’t explain in this short blog how it was “unhinged” to see Karl Rove’s fierce attack on O’Donnell as like an Olbermann moment. (In fact, it was: Olbermann reran large chunks of it on MSNBC.) He didn’t explain how it was “unhinged” to say Rove was at war with the Tea Party when they won a surprise victory, and he denounced the winner in the strongest terms. But the attacks were just getting started: This reaction is revealing — and disturbing — for a number of reasons. First, it shows how some conservatives view the business of political commentary. Rove obviously has strong views on O’Donnell, based on personal experience with the candidate. But deviations from the party line are not permitted . It is not enough to dispute Rove’s critique; Rove himself must be punished. The message is clear: The facts do not matter. Politics is war carried on by other means. Anyone who doesn’t consistently take one side is a traitor. Gerson doesn’t consider that the anger on the Mike Castle side of this election — the losing side — is based on the view that  the Tea Party deviated from the party line that Castle should march to the general election undisturbed. They implied only traitors would throw a “slam dunk” election in doubt. This attitude can be found on right and left. But a serious commentator cannot think this way. He owes his readers or viewers his best judgment — which means he cannot simply be a tool of someone else’s ideological agenda. Some conservatives have adopted the Bolshevik approach to information and the media : Every personal feeling, every independent thought, every inconvenient fact, must be subordinated to the party line — the Tea Party line. Gerson wants to suggest that the Tea Party people are unhinged in their rhetoric, and then he compares them to murderous Russian communists. Remember this the next time Gerson agrees with a liberal that Obama shouldn’t be smeared with foreign associations. 60,000 is Delaware does not make the Tea Party movement predominant in the Republican Party, or even in the conservative movement. If Tea Party activists believe they can win in a political coalition so pure that it doesn’t include strong, mainstream conservatives such as Karl Rove, they are delusional. And they are hurting their own cause. Third, some conservatives seem to display special venom for those who are “compromised” by the experience of actually winning and governing . Rove, according to Malkin, is an “establishment Beltway strategist.” Actually, he is a former high-level policy aid to the president of the United States and the primary author of two presidential victories. This does not make him always right. But it means he has had responsibilities bigger than running a Web site. This is an advantage for a commentator, not a drawback. Here is Gerson’s arrogance on display, for it’s very easy to remind the Bush people that “winning” wasn’t what happened in 2006 and 2008. Rove and Gerson and their team drove the GOP into a deep hole. This is the spot where the liberals secretly point fingers and laugh — before they invite these Bushies in front of the cameras to denounce the conservatives. The ending was just as petulant: In Tea Party theory, inexperience is itself seen as a kind of qualification. People like O’Donnell are actually preferable to people like Rove, because they haven’t been tainted by public trust or actual achievement. This is the attitude of the adolescent — the belief that the world began on their thirteenth birthday. It is also a sign of childish political thought.
