Mel Gibson Condemned For Alleged Racist, Sexist Rant Against Ex

Reported taped outburst against Oksana Grigorieva ‘reveal the actor’s fundamental character flaw,’ Jesse Jackson says. By Gil Kaufman Mel Gibson Photo: Jordan Strauss/WireImage Mel Gibson’s messy public split from the mother of his 8-month-old daughter got uglier on Thursday, when reports emerged about a 30-minute tape-recorded rant of the actor hurling racist and sexist epithets against Oksana Grigorieva. Amid reports that physical abuse allegedly took place in the brief relationship Gibson, 54, had with the 40-year-old Russian model/singer following his divorce from his wife of 30 years, RadarOnline revealed that the actor used the N-word and other expletives during a profanity-laced argument with his ex. Gibson’s spokesperson did not deny that the speaker in the taped outburst was his client, but the one-time box-office giant has not commented on the recording as of press time. The couple, who were first seen together a month after Gibson’s divorce last year from the mother of his seven children, broke up in April and are fighting for custody of their daughter. Grigorieva reportedly made the tape because she feared for her life after Gibson allegedly made threats against her. During one segment, Gibson allegedly says, “I am going to come and burn the f–king house down … but you will b— me first.” And in another, he reportedly tells her that she looks like a “f—ing pig in heat” who risked getting “raped by a pack of n—–s,” as their baby screams in the background. The Reverend Jesse Jackson told Radar that the latest racist outburst proved that Gibson has a “fundamental character flaw.” “Mel Gibson’s outburst demonstrates once again that we are far from a society that is ‘beyond race and racism,’ ” Jackson told the site. “His penchants for anti-Semitic and racist diatribes reveal the actor’s fundamental character flaw. … He needs help.” The Los Angeles NAACP released a statement to TMZ condemning the outburst. “An apology is insufficient given his history of racism, sexism and anti-Semitism,” L.A. branch president Leon Jenkins said. “No amount of words will change his image as an out of date and out of control racist. Only [with] a sustained period of positive acts can his legacy be redeemed.” Renowned attorney Gloria Alred also got into the mix and sent Gibson an open letter via Radar saying, “As an attorney who has represented many sexual assault victims and as a woman who is a survivor of rape myself, I want you to know how deeply offensive, appalling and harmful your reported statements are.” This is not the first time Gibson has been called out in public for using racial slurs. The “Lethal Weapon” actor, once one of the most popular, bankable movie stars in the world, was blasted by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation in 1991 over an interview in which he made derogatory comments about homosexuals. Several of his movies — including “Braveheart” and “The Passion of the Christ” — have been criticized for their portrayal of homosexuals and Jews. In addition to allegations that “Christ” had anti-Semitic overtones, a leaked report from a DUI arrest in July 2006 had Gibson — who has struggled with alcohol abuse — making anti-Jewish remarks to one of the arresting officers, saying, “F—ing Jews. … Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” He also made derogatory, sexist remarks to a female officer during the same traffic stop, calling her “sugar t–s.” Gibson later confirmed that he made the comments and apologized twice through his publicist, but the incident appeared to have a lasting impact on his movie career, which has stalled since the arrest. Gibson has denied claims by Grigorieva that he knocked her teeth out during an argument. Both parties have filed restraining orders against each other in the midst of the custody battle. A spokesperson for Gibson could not be reached for comment at press time.

For rent in China: White people

Beijing, China (CNN) — In China, white people can be rented. For a day, a weekend, a week, up to even a month or two, Chinese companies are willing to pay high prices for fair-faced foreigners to join them as fake employees or business partners. Some call it “White Guy Window Dressing.” To others, it's known as the “White Guy in a Tie” events, “The Token White Guy Gig,” or, simply, a “Face Job.” And it is, essentially, all about the age-old Chinese concept of face. To have a few foreigners hanging around means a company has prestige, money and the increasingly crucial connections — real or not — to businesses abroad. “Face, we say in China, is more important than life itself,” said Zhang Haihua, author of “Think Like Chinese.” “Because Western countries are so developed, people think they are more well off, so people think that if a company can hire foreigners, it must have a lot of money and have very important connections overseas. So when they really want to impress someone, they may roll out a foreigner.” Or rent one. Last year, Jonathan Zatkin, an American actor who lives in Beijing, posed as the vice president of an Italian jewelry company that had, allegedly, been in a partnership with a Chinese jewelry chain for a decade. When is being foreign a career advantage? Zatkin was paid 2,000 yuan (about $300) to fly, along with a couple of Russian models, to a small city in the central province of Henan where he delivered a speech for the grand opening ceremony of a jewelry store there. “I was up on stage with the mayor of the town, and I made a speech about how wonderful it was to work with the company for 10 years and how we were so proud of all of the work they had done for us in China,” Zatkin said. “They put up a big bandstand and the whole town was there and some other local muckety-mucks.” The requirements for these jobs are simple. 1. Be white. 2. Do not speak any Chinese, or really speak at all, unless asked. 3. Pretend like you just got off of an airplane yesterday. Those who go for such gigs tend to be unemployed actors or models, part-time English teachers or other expats looking to earn a few extra bucks. Often they are jobs at a second- or third-tier city, where the presence of pale-faced foreigners is needed to impress local officials, secure a contract or simply to fulfill a claim of being international. “Occasionally companies want a foreign face to go to meetings and conferences or to go to dinners and lunches and smile at the clients and shake people's hands,” read an ad posted by a company called Rent A Laowai (Chinese for “foreigner”) on the online classified site thebeijinger.com. It continued: “There are job opportunities for girls who are pretty and for men who can look good in a suit.” People like Brad Smith. When Smith — the nom de plume of the Beijing-based American actor — answered CNN's phone call on a recent morning, he was standing outside a meeting room at a Ramada Inn in Hangzhou, a city about 100 miles outside of Shanghai. Today's job: Pretend to be an architect from New York and give design plans for a new museum to local officials. “They have not told me what my name is today. I think it is Lawrence or something,” said Smith — unlike some jobs, no fake business cards were given to hand out. Earlier that morning he went over his script with his Chinese “business partners” at a Kentucky Fried Chicken. “It says, 'Good morning distinguished leaders. It is my privilege to participate in this program',” said Smith, who asked that his real name not be used for fear it could jeopardize future jobs. If Smith is asked a question, he is told to pretend to answer as his “translator” pretends to understand. Occasionally, these jobs can go awry. Smith said 18 months ago Beijing police showed up at his apartment after a financial company he worked at for a couple of months in Xi'an, a city in western China, allegedly swindled millions of yuan out of clients. “That company said I was the guy in charge,” he said. “I didn't even remember the company's name. After that, I decided I was never going to use my passport again with these fake companies. The small gigs are much less dangerous.” Sometimes companies will hire Caucasians simply to sit in the office a few hours a day near the window where clients and customers can see them. White women are also a hot commodity, sometimes to pose as phony foreign girlfriends, or, in the case of Vicky Mohieddeen, to pretend to be an oil tycoon. Mohieddeen, who is Scottish, took a job in 2008 to attend what she describes as some sort of “oil drilling conference” in Shandong province for 300 yuan ($44). Several busloads of foreigners, with nationalities ranging from Pakistani to Nigerian, were trucked to the event, she said. They were greeted by brass bands and feted with a sumptuous dinner. “I was like, 'Yeah, we have a lot of oil in Scotland.' I didn't know what to say. It was a bit nerve-racking. We were guests of honor of the vice mayor. We were put in a nice hotel. It was quite fancy.” For Mohieddeen, who had just arrived in Beijing at the time, the experience, albeit bizarre, was an introduction to a side of China most foreigners will never see. “It is part of what China is all about, you know,” Mohieddeen said. “There is quite an elaborate fantasy world going on here where if everyone buys into it, it does not matter if it is the truth. Those kinds of experiences give me a fuller understanding of the way the culture works.” added by: eden49

Was Amélie Really the Best-Shot Film of the Last Decade?

That’s what 17,000 voters at American Cinematographer — the house journal of the American Society of Cinematographers — have expressed in a new poll, the results of which were slipped over Movieline’s transom this morning. Which Network Will Be The First to Jump on a Russian Spy Series?

And you thought Horse-Boy had the makings of a good Hollywood project. On Monday, federal prosecutors charged 11 people with being part of a Russian espionage ring . In other words: Spies! And lest you think this isn’t like some Cold War paranoia fantasy, the accused — who were “living under false names and deep cover in a patient scheme to penetrate what one coded message called American ‘policy making circles'” — partook in every spy cliche you could imagine: forged passports, false identities, messages written in invisible ink and even the exchanging of “identical orange bags as they brushed past one another in a train station stairway.” Suck it, John le Carré! Unless this is all an elaborate viral marketing campaign for Salt , the Russian spies seem ripe for Hollywood intervention. But this story is too sprawling for just a movie — it needs a TV show. Ahead, Movieline looks at the five networks who should be interested.

Oksana Grigorieva Says Mel Gibson Punched Her in the Face; Actor Accuses Her of Lying

Mel Gibson’s lawyer says his former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva is making up horrible stories about him because she’s having buyer’s remorse … so to speak. Stephen Kolodny says it’s all over a custody agreement she signed: “Oksana’s deceitful conduct in trying to terminate Mel’s access to his daughter continues.” This is serious stuff: Oksana Grigorieva claims Mel Gibson punched her twice in the face last January, knocking out her teeth and giving her a concussion. It all started last week, when the Russian pianist took out a restraining order barring Mel from getting near Oksana or their daughter, 8-month-old Lucia. The next day, Mel’s lawyer went to court and got the judge to modify the order, allowing Gibson to have contact with the child, his first with Grigorieva. Kolodny claims, by modifying the order, the court rejected Oksana’s argument that the baby was in danger and affirmed their recent custody agreement. SHE SAID, HE SAID : Did Mel beat Oksana, or is this a bitter ploy? Sources connected with Oksana Grigorieva, however, claim she believes Mel Gibson is ” extremely violent ” and poses an ongoing threat to her and the baby. Kolodny scoffs at the claim, saying “Mel was hopeful that their break-up was behind them and Lucia would be the beneficiary of cooperative parenting.” “Apparently Lucia will be denied that good fortune.” He noted that they agreed to a deal offering overnight, unrestricted visitation, and which would result in Mel having 50/50 custody of their daughter. Finally, Kolodny says, “Making sensational allegations is not the way to resolve this,” adding that Mel wants a custody resolution in court, not the press. Lies or not, allegations surfaced last week from sources in Oksana’s camp who said she had “to protect the baby during one of [Mel’s] violent episodes.” “She tried to protect his reputation, despite her fears of him. She regrets believing his empty promises to obtain help to control his violent nature.”

Eminem Does ‘Top 10,’ Jay-Z Talks LeBron James On ‘David Letterman’

‘Don’t get mixed up with drugs, gangs or oil executives,’ Em jokes during dig at BP over oil spill. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay-Z visits the “Late Show With David Letterman” on Tuesday Photo: Getty Images Eminem and Jay-Z will appear on the “Late Show with David Letterman” tonight (June 25), and in addition to performing on the rooftop together, the two rappers also talk with the cranky host. In preview clips released online , Em is seen participating in Letterman’s famous “Top 10” segment and Jay sits down on the couch to chat with Letterman. Letterman and the Brooklyn MC discussed Cleveland Cavaliers star (and Jay-Z pal) LeBron James’ impending free agency and the arrival of Mikhail Prokhorov, the New Jersey Nets’ new Russian billionaire majority owner. “The tall guy,” Hov joked, referring to Prokhorov. “You’re a guy,” Letterman then told the rapper. “I’m a guy. Now, if LeBron James wants to be a guy, he will stay where he is and not cut the heart out of that city by leaving Cleveland. You wouldn’t do that, would you? Cleveland is in desperate decline. And one of the glimmering hopes they have —” “How’s your ratings in Cleveland?,” Jay interrupted to laughs. Jay, who holds a minority stake in the Nets , admitted if he found himself in a similar situation, he could concede to Letterman’s point. Only three of Eminem’s Top 10 items about advice for kids had been previewed at press time, including jokes about “Toy Story 3,” illegal downloading, and a dig at BP in the wake of the Gulf leak. “Don’t get mixed up with drugs, gangs or oil executives,” the Detroit MC deadpanned. The two rappers taped their appearance earlier in the week in New York. Initially, they requested to perform on top of the famed Ed Sullivan Theater marquee, but officials for New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg declined to grant a permit. The pair were able to skirt the issue, however, by taking the show to the rooftop of the building and away from the streets where officials had concerns over public safety. Eminem and Jay-Z’s joint appearance was a part of promotion for their stadium concert series this September in New York and Detroit; two additional shows were announced on Thursday. Baby Mama Drama: Mel Gibson Files For Restraining Order Against Oksana Grigorieva

Mel Gibson has filed for a restraining order against Oksana Grigorieva, his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his eighth child (but not the first seven, whose mother he was married to when he knocked Oksana up, like all upstanding folks do). The actor lodged the paperwork under seal at the Los Angeles Superior Court in Downtown Los Angeles Thursday. The plaintiff is listed as Mel Gibson and the defendant is Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of his seven-month-old girl. Grigorieva was served the documents at her home. The case is sealed, meaning the documents cannot be released to the public, but reports say the complaint centers around three issues and Gibson’s access to daughter Lucia. Mel and Oksana in happier, home-wrecking times . Mel Gibson filed for a temporary restraining order, a notice about a forthcoming court hearing as well as a notice of visitation rights and child custody. He and Oksana Grigorieva , a Russian musician-singer, split in April after over a year of dating. Their split was described as amicable … at that time. However, Grigorieva hinted the break-up was complicated: “We have split up, suddenly and recently… Unfortunately, I cannot give you the reason.” “But you will find out everything quite soon.” Last year, Gibson’s wife Robyn filed for divorce after 30 years of marriage, right around when Mel and Grigorieva conceived their child together.
