REVIEW: Gosling and Clooney Bring Movie-Star Chops, and Movie-Star Stubble, to The Ides of March

George Clooney’s The Ides of March is an actors’ movie, a picture that gives performers some provocative things to do without necessarily providing a great story for them to hang onto. It’s also a movie made for grown-ups, and Lord knows there are few enough of those around today. But this story of an idealistic young press secretary who finds his principles eroded at the hands of a corrupt Democratic presidential candidate keeps getting in the way of its own chin-stroking: It’s carefully designed to make us think it’s making us think, but in the end, what’s it really telling us? That politics — and politicians — can be dishonest and ugly? Please don’t stop the presses for that one.

Oscar Predictions: Even Harvey Weinstein Is a Sucker For George Clooney

“I love George Clooney’s movie, The Ides of March ,” Harvey Weinstein raved recently when asked for an Academy Award prediction. “I love politics, and this movie is the best political movie — it’s gotta be right up there with the best of the best. Seriously, it is the toughest, most incisive, no-bullshit movie I’ve seen this year. And [Ryan] Gosling hits it out of the ballpark. And the entire cast is great. Clooney just nailed it. It’s an appropriate movie for these times. So Oscar prediction? That that gets nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor. And it’s not mine.” [ Vulture ]

Be Afraid: Ryan Gosling Threatens Early Retirement

It’s often said that we get the culture we deserve, and maybe — judging by the soft reception for Drive and the general post-Venice quietude around next month’s The Ides of March — the adage is true. Why else would Ryan Gosling, one of the most respected screen talents of his generation, publicly contemplate getting out of the business early?

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes: New Couple Alert!

Based on their respective levels of hotness, this seems about right, doesn’t it? Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes are reportedly dating, as the new couple was spotted over the weekend at Disneyland. “They were very playful,” a witness tells Us Weekly , which has published photos of the pair together. “Eva was skipping around like a little girl… She would lean into him and she held his arm the entire time.” Mendes and Gosling have been friends for awhile, but an insider says they’ve grown extra close while shooting The Place Beyond the Pines , adding: “There’s always been this strong chemistry between them…this was just a matter of time!” Eva does know how to pick a man. REVIEW: Crazy, Stupid, Love. Isn’t Nearly Crazy Enough, But At Least There’s Gosling

Crazy, Stupid, Love. is, for the most part, an effective love story, but the two figures in thrall to one another aren’t the ones you think: The magnetism between the movie’s two male stars, Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling, is what really makes the movie tick. The women — and we’re talking about women like Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei and coltish relative newcomer Annaleigh Tipton — almost function as accessories, although, as wonderful as these actresses are, that still isn’t necessarily a liability. Everyone in Crazy, Stupid, Love. is served well by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s crisp, intelligent direction. Their instincts keep the story moving deftly; if only, right at the finish line, the movie didn’t suffer from a giant failure of nerve.
