RIP: Latin Superstar Jenni Rivera Dies In Tragic Plane Crash In Mexico

It’s been a sad couple of days for Jenni Rivera’s family, friends, and fans. The 42-year-old Latina superstar died in a tragic plane crash Sunday, December 9 near Monterrey, Mexico. Jenni was traveling on a private jet early Sunday with six others on the flight when it went missing. She was presumed dead when the wreckage was discovered Sunday afternoon with no survivors. According to US Weekly , her family released a statement and shared some information about the singer/reality star you may not have known: “We are feeling devastated. It’s a devastation to the family,” Rivera’s brother, Pedro Rivera Jr., told E! News. “We don’t know how to thank you for all the love you gave to Jenni and to all the family. It is just so special to have you guys as fans.” As family, celebs and fans are mourning her death, Us Weekly remembers the late singer’s life and career with five facts. 1. She sold over 15 million albums worldwide. The singer was nominated in 2003, 2008 and 2010 at the Latin Grammys. Rivera was the first female Banda singer (a brass-based form of traditional Mexican music) to sell out at the Gibson Amphitheater in Universal City, Calif. “I’m happy, I’m very happy for the success that I’ve had, but I’ve worked so hard at it,” Rivera said in April at Billboard’s Latin Music Conference (via CNN). 2. The daughter of Mexican immigrants, she was born and raised in Long Beach, Calif. Rivera, with one sister and and four brothers. 3. She is survived by five children. Rivera became pregnant with her first child in high school. She had three children with first husband Jose Trinidad Marin: Janney, Jacqueline and Michael. After the couple divorced in 1992, she remarried in 1997 and had two children with second husband Juan Lopez: Jenicka and Johnny. “Being a mother by far is my favorite and most important career,” she told Parade in August 2012. “They take priority over anything else.” 4. She was a reality television star. Rivera appeared in and produced mun2′s Jenni Rivera Presents: Chiquis & Raq-C in 2010, I Love Jenni in 2011 and Chiquis ‘n Control in 2012. “People kind of connect and identify with us because we are normal,” Rivera told Parade in August 2012 of her reality show. “We’re just like another other Mexican-American family. We are kind of nutty and silly.” 5. She was set to star in her own ABC show, Jenni. According to Deadline, she was going to star in the self-titled family comedy as a middle-class, single woman raising a family with unique parenting skills. We wish her family, the family of the other passengers on that flight, and those mourning their loss some peace during this terrible tragedy. Images via AP

Handicapping The Performances Of ‘Les Misérables’ — Who Will Dazzle In the Movie Musical?

The highly anticipated Les Misérables is on track to become this year’s Chicago — a crowd-pleasing, award-winning, budget-busting musical extravaganza that will sharply divide audiences on the respective talents of its singing, emoting, showboating stars. The stakes are raised by the actors having sung their parts live on set — accompanied by a piano, with the orchestra added in post-production — instead of recording the songs in the safety of a studio and lip-synching during their scenes. The debates over who proved a genuine triple-threat and who embarrassed themselves will last for weeks as we barrel into Oscar season, but let’s get the ball rolling now by ranking who we’re expecting to dazzle us — and who’ll disappoint. Spoilers — for a 27-year-old musical and a 150-year-old novel — below. Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean. Ever since he slashed and sneered his way to the big screen in X-Men , we’ve been hearing nonstop about the one-man entertainment machine that is Hugh Jackman. Although he’s been a staple on Broadway for the last decade, Les Miz is Jackman’s biggest opportunity yet to show off those fabled lungs. There’s reason to expect much from the Tony-winning actor; his live performances amply attest to his vocal clarity and range and effortless panache. But there’s always a chance that Jackman might become a victim of high expectations — or drown in the fuddy-duddy cheesiness of his musical theater background . Anne Hathaway as Fantine. Hathaway’s supporting turn as the doomed, consumptive prostitute is the closest thing Les Miz currently has to an Oscar clinch. After a surprisingly foxy performance as Selina Kyle in this summer’s The Dark Knight Rises and a tabloid- and award-friendly 25-lb weight loss — perhaps she got some dieting tips from co-star Christian Bale? — all eyes are on her. The actress’s musical resume is thin, but previews show an emotion-choked rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” that might not work for, say, the radio, divorced from the context — but sounds perfect for an extended death scene. Russell Crowe as Inspector Javert. Like his colleagues Gadget and Clouseau, Inspector Javert is a somewhat ridiculous figure: an uptight dunce who can’t see what’s right in front of him. Crowe seems slightly miscast as the relentless lawman; Javert doesn’t deserve the actor’s heartbreakingly wounded eyes. The tantrum-prone actor has received a lot of ridicule over the years for his soft rock vanity band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts , a band whose name’s so awful it’s got to have broken some record for terribleness. But all of that hardly matters when Crowe’s voice is such a sexy combination of tenderness and gravel you’ll forgive him for stealing Captain Crunch’s uniform. Samantha Barks as Éponine. For a certain generation, there is no other Éponine than Joey Potter . The challenger to our nineties nostalgia is Samantha Barks, a 22-year-old West End veteran who first found fame as third-placer on an American Idol-style singing competition in the U.K. Barks went on to perform the role of Éponine on stage for a year. Her version of “ On My Own ” for the Les Misérables 25th Anniversary concert, already all over the Internet, shows off her tasteful but slightly too pop-influenced take on the lovelorn aria. Barks can outbelt Katie Holmes by a mile and a half, but can our hearts be full of love enough for two Éponines? Eddie Redmayne as Marius Pontmercy. As an oblivious rich kid and a character that appears out of nowhere halfway through the story, Marius is one of the more challenging roles to nail. Add a dopey romance based on love at first sight, and Redmayne seems set up for failure. Fortunately, the trailers and some pre-fame memorabilia suggest that the freckle-faced Brit with the unexpectedly low baritone will more than acquit himself. Amanda Seyfried as Cosette. Of all the characters in the main cast, Cosette is by far the most thankless. She’s a boring beacon of virtue without a single song to call her own. (Even the iconic “Castle on a Cloud” is shared with the grasping Mde. Thénardier.) This makes the casting of Seyfried, who displayed her thin, reedy trill of a voice in Mamma Mia! , the world’s first narrative karaoke video, a decent if unexciting choice. With a cast already so bursting with talent, though, Seyfried’s minor role might turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter as Monsieur and Madame Thénardier. The closest thing the ultra-serious Les Miz has to comic relief are the black humor exploits of the corrupt Thénardiers, Éponine’s parents and Cosette’s temporary guardians. Baron Cohen and Bonham Carter are undeniably gifted, intelligent, hard-working performers, but their recent film roles — mostly as cartoonish villains who don’t have a chromosome in common with actual human beings — have become increasingly one-note. If the musical Sweeney Todd , in which SBC and HBC co-starred, is any indication, they’ll be just fine for actors without musical training — as well as gratingly and hopelessly stuck in a never-ending Borat joke/Tim Burton movie. Ivanka Trump Denies Staging "Intervention" For Obama-Obsessed Donald

Ivanka Trump is blasting a report that claimed she and her siblings staged an intervention, asking father Donald Trump to back off his public bashing of President Obama. The Trump heiress took to Twitter today to call out the N.Y. Daily News: “I totally respect @realDonaldTrump’s opinions & right to articulate them, which is what I would’ve told @nydailynews if they’d call me to fact check their false story ,” she wrote. The Trump patriarch has taken a ton of heat – and kept late night talk show hosts in business – thanks to his repeated diatribes throughout the 2012 election cycle. A year and a half ago, he was beating the drum for Obama’s birth certificate to be released, insinuating repeatedly that the Commander-in-Chief was not a U.S. citizen. Obama eventually released the document, then eviscerated the Donald at the WHCA dinner. In 2012, he made a “bombshell” offer to donate $5 million to charity if Obama – who he continues to bash repeatedly and publicly – produced his passport and college records. This month, he ranted against the sham election and end of democracy as we know it. The level of vitriol was off-putting to many; according to the Daily News , his heirs decided to confront him and ask him to tone it down for the good of the Trump name. According to Ivanka, this never happened … although the way things are going for him lately, the fake sources the paper got this from may be on to something. He was our #1 Turkey of 2012 , after all … and there’s a Macy’s Dump Trump petition . [Photo: WENN.com]

Brandon Marshall on Viagra Use in the NFL: Common!

We all know Viagra can help men score. But can that little blue pill make a difference when an NFL running back needs to cross the goal line in a very difference sense? Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall made headlines today when he told reporters of a certain performance enhancing drug: “I’ve heard of some crazy stories. I’ve heard guys using like Viagra, seriously. Because the blood is supposedly thin… some crazy stuff.” However, the company behind this magic medicine says any athlete popping its drug should be aware: The pills “indicated solely for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED),” Pfizer tells TMZ, adding: “Pfizer has not examined the safety of Viagra in men without ED and does not promote or encourage the use of Viagra for any use but the treatment of ED.” Well, okay then. Perhaps if the players just relax and put a little less pressure on themselves, the yards will come easily on their own.

Hate It Or Love It?1?! 58-Year-Old Woman Becomes A Surrogate For Her Own Daughter

Is this sweet or a lil’ too much? Some are saying it’s a beautiful, selfless act and other’s are questioning the safety risks Cathy Donnelly took for her daughter’s own happiness. According to The Daily Mail : Cathy Donnelly, 58, is six months pregnant and will welcome her seventh grandchild into the world when she gives birth to her – before daughter Shannon Fischer raises the baby. Mrs Fischer and her husband Jamie had been trying for two years when they discovered they couldn’t conceive due to scarring in her uterus. So Mrs Donnelly mother of three and a grandmother of six, volunteered to be a surrogate mother for her daughter. Mrs Fischer said: ‘The day I came home from my surgery mum said “I’ll do it”. She didn’t hesitate.’ Mrs Donnelly, from London in Ontario, Canada, said: ‘I felt bad for them – I just thought what’s nine months of my life? They are going to have a child for the rest of theirs? It’s not like I’m busy doing anything.’ Michael Murray, specialist at the Northern California Fertility Medical Center, says though there have been cases of mothers acting as surrogate for their daughters before it is typically something the medical community does not advise. He said: ‘Usually it’s a close friend or a sister that acts as the gestational carrier – women who are over 45-years-old are not normally in good enough health. ‘Pregnancy for older women is much riskier. The most common complications are high blood pressure, gestational diabetes and premature child birth.’ But they were risks Mrs Donnelly was willing to accept and while she admits her pregnancy hasn’t been easy, she has had no complications so far. ‘It was long process and involved a heavy dose of fertility drugs for both of us but in the end it all paid off. ‘But it has been challenging. Now I’m showing I make sure people aren’t staring or looking at me because they’re probably thinking ‘look at that old lady.’ Mrs Donnelly said she did question whether she was doing the right thing and if everything would work out okay until she started to feel the baby move. Now her only concerns are about how she will feel once she has given birth. ‘I don’t know if I’ll feel like I’ve lost her, I don’t know how I’m going to feel,’ Mrs Donnelly said. Shannon plans to name her daughter Zoey Hope Catherine after her mother. And for her the whole experience has made her cherish their mother-daughter relationship even more. Uhmmm…ok. Do you think this love for your child goes a little too far?? Images via facebook

REVIEW: The Apparition Cribs From Horror Classics, Is Still A Frightful Mess

Like the  Paranormal Activity  films and their cinematic ancestor Poltergeist ,  The Apparition  takes place in what may be the least naturally atmospheric setting out there — suburban California. There’s something welcomingly off-kilter about dropping a supernatural tale in a location so inherently mundane. It’s straightforward enough to spin scares out of creaky mansions in remote areas, cavernously empty hotels and abandoned asylums, but sunny tract housing doesn’t naturally lend itself to spookiness, which makes it all the more immediate and unsettling when a movie manages to make such a thing work. It doesn’t, unfortunately, work in  The  Apparition , an incomprehensibly garbled, derivative attempt at a horror flick from first-time writer-director Todd Lincoln. The setting may actually be the most interesting aspect of the film, a sparsely occupied, recently constructed planned community in the Los Angeles suburb of Palmdale, where young couple Kelly ( Twilight- er Ashley Greene) and Ben (Sebastian Stan) have just taken up residence in a new house purchased as an investment by Kelly’s mother. With its shiny appliances, pre-installed flatscreen and near-identical exterior to neighboring buildings on the block, the Overlook Hotel it is not, but then it needn’t be, because the pair may have brought their haunting with them. The Apparition is inspired by the Philip Experiment, in which a group of Canadian parapsychologists in the ’70s invented a ghost, gave it a history and tried to imagine it into being by the force of their combined will and thoughts. The film presents a version of this experiment, done in faux aged stock, at its outset before skipping ahead to more modern footage of a recent, disastrous attempt to recreate the deed with scientific equipment, led by college student Patrick (Tom Felton — Draco Malfoy himself). The double framing story presents a captivating concept, of a spirit birthed entirely out of human belief, a self-reinforcing thing once it came into being and started scaring people. But the film essentially drops this idea after introducing it, as it does most of the elements it introduces. Whatever other problems  The Apparition ‘s apparition has, bewildering inconsistency is its foremost. At first the spirit is flinging open doors and making banging sounds a la the aforementioned  Paranormal Activity , then it’s causing dark stains to appear on the ceiling like Dark Water , then it’s sucking people into walls like  Pulse , then it’s taking the form a jerkily crawling ghost woman right out of  The Grudge . The apparition, it would seem, has no clear motivation and is of fuzzy origin, but it’s definitely a movie buff, especially when it comes to J-horror. That last scene in particular is such a carbon copy of Kayako, the ghost in Takashi Shimizu’s franchise, and so unlike what’s happened in the haunting thus far (everything has suggested it take the form of a tall, thin man) that it’s almost laughable, as if, having given up on more traditional scares, the apparition has decided to go international. Greene and Stan are both very pretty, and they’re fine actors who are required for the sake of the movie to do extremely silly things. Stan’s character, for instance, keeps his past connection to the spirit secret for no sensical reason, and tries to pretend the paranormal force that’s growing ghost mold on their ceiling and tying their clothes in knots has no interest in them. Greene’s character uncovers her boyfriend’s keepsake trove of videos and other evidence of the experiment gone wrong, and the first thing she asks him about is not why he helped summon some apparent demon thing but who the girl is in the photos with him — were they together ? The primary frightening scene in the film is also its biggest headshaker, in which Kelly is left alone in the house as the lights are shutting off by themselves, and rather than run outside or shriek for help, she uses a thermal imager to peer around the dark downstairs, the soundtrack running an accelerating, thumping heartbeat. It’s a good thing neither Kelly nor Ben are developed enough for the audience to invest in their safety as they heedlessly engage in such hazard-courting behavior, but without characters to latch on to, all that’s left are the scares and the story, neither of which amounts to anything. At only 82 minutes long,  The Apparition is so lean you’d think it had to have been edited to bits somewhere, except that there’s no conceivable way that these pieces could have fit together to begin with. With no consistent mythology — at one point the characters drive and drive to take shelter in a Faraday cage that immediately stops working once they get inside — and few original thoughts,  The Apparition is distinguished only in being what has to be the lone horror movie to set a climactic scene in a Costco. Lupe Fiasco’s “B-tch Bad” Can Save Hip-Hop…If We Let It

USDA Pulls Reigns On Slaughter House After This Video Shows Animal Cruelty To Cows! (Warning Disturbing) [Video]

What are they doing to the meat?: The U.S. Department of Agriculture is investigating “disturbing evidence of inhumane treatment of cattle” at a California meat supplier, the agency said. After receiving video from an animal welfare group, the USDA sent investigators to the Central Valley Meat Co. and found violations of humane handling, the agency said in a statement. “We have reviewed the video and determined that while some of the footage provided shows unacceptable treatment of cattle, it does not show anything that would compromise food safety,” said Al Almanza, administrator of the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. The USDA suspended inspections at the Hanford-based company, effectively halting slaughter operations there. Company officials have not seen the video, said Brian Coelho, president of the Central Valley Meat Co. He said he was “extremely disturbed” to learn that inspections were suspended. “Our company seeks to not just meet federal humane handling regulations, but to exceed them,” Coelho said in a statement. He said federal inspectors continuously inspect the plant and are able to take action if they see a problem. “That is why these allegations are both disturbing and surprising,” he said. Central Valley did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday after CNN sent the company a link to the video. Compassion Over Killing, a nonprofit organization that focuses on animal cruelty, posted the video to YouTube and to its website on Tuesday. The group said an undercover investigator shot the video. In the graphic video, one worker stands on the nostrils of a cow that the narrator says has been shot in the head but didn’t die right away. In another segment, a worker appears to shoot a cow in the head several times. “At U.S. slaughterhouses, federal law requires death to be quick, when cows are shot in the head the process should cause immediate unconsciousness,” the narrator says. “At Central Valley, countless deaths we documented were slow and agonizing.” Central Valley Meat, a 50-year-old company, was one of the beef suppliers for In-N-Out Burger, a well-known fast food chain predominantly in California and the Southwest. Mark Taylor, chief operating officer for In-N-Out, said the chain has stopped doing business with Central Valley Meat. “In-N-Out Burger would never condone the inhumane treatment of animals, and all of our suppliers must agree to abide by our strict standards for the humane treatment of cattle,” he said in a statement. The plant has been closed while the USDA conducts its investigation. Central Valley said it will cooperate with the probe. CNN

President, Hollywood Respond to Colorado Multiplex Massacre

This morning’s horrific Colorado multiplex shooting , which left at least 12 attendees of a midnight Dark Knight Rises screening dead, has prompted an ongoing wave of reactions from Hollywood to the White House and beyond. President Barack Obama, who canceled a campaign event scheduled for this evening, issued a statement : “Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado. Federal and local law enforcement are still responding, and my Administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time. We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded. As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family. All of us must have the people of Aurora in our thoughts and prayers as they confront the loss of family, friends, and neighbors, and we must stand together with them in the challenging hours and days to come.” Also from the campaign trail came comments from presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney, who cited preliminary casualty reports: “Ann and I are deeply saddened by the news of the senseless violence that took the lives of 15 people in Colorado and injured dozens more. We are praying for the families and loved ones of the victims during this time of deep shock and immense grief. We expect that the person responsible for this terrible crime will be quickly brought to justice.” Meanwhile, Warner Bros. called off its Paris premiere and issued its own statement: “Warner Bros. is deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time.” MPAA chief Chris Dodd spoke out as well: “We share the shock and sadness of everyone in the motion picture community at the news of this terrible event. We extend our prayers and deepest sympathies to the victims, their loved ones and all those affected by this tragedy.” Reactions on Twitter are those of sustained shock and grief, perhaps best characterized by Michael Moore, whose 2002 documentary Bowling For Columbine explored the issue of gun violence in America (particularly in Colorado): Too sad at the moment to comment. — Michael Moore (@MMFlint) July 20, 2012
