As most everyone knows by now, Justin Bieber cried on stage at the end of his MTV Video Music Awards performance on Sunday night. But the singer wasn’t the only one to be brought to tears of some kind over his new track, “What Do You Mean?” Lena Dunham took to Twitter on Monday and cried foul over certain lyrics in the track, taking issue with what she believes are words or phrases often associated with date rape. “Let’s do away with pop songs where a girl nods yes when she means no and vice versa, k?” Dunham wrote on social media. As you can see, Dunham did not cite Bieber or his latest single by name. But it’s pretty clear she’s referencing Bieber here, considering the timing of the Tweet and some of the lyrics in ” What Do You Mean ,” such as the following:  What do you mean?/When you nod your head yes/But you wanna say no/What do you mean? Justin Bieber Performs on MTV VMAs, Breaks Down in Tears Justin Bieber “What Do You Mean” Music Video Bieber has said the song is about how women can be wishy-washy, telling Ryan Seacrest a few weeks back: “Girls are often flip-floppy. They say something and they mean something else. So … what do you mean? I don’t really know, that’s why I’m asking.” That’s fair. And we don’t think Bieber is actually espousing any kind of sexual assault here. But it’s not hard to see Dunham’s point, either. Words are important. Language is important.
