‘Prometheus’: Secrets Behind The Surgery Scene

Co-writer Damon Lindelof tells MTV News about genesis of Noomi Rapace’s creepy self-surgery sequence. By Kevin P. Sullivan Logan Marshall-Green, Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender in “Prometheus” Photo: Kerry Brown/ Twentieth Century Fox This story consists almost entirely of “Prometheus” spoilers. You’ve been warned. True to his legacy of sci-fi-horror, Ridley Scott peppered ” Prometheus ” with moments that are sure to make you wish you’d kept your helmet on, but none of the film’s shocking moments even approach one hair-raiser in particular. The sequence doesn’t require much identification beyond “that scene,” but in case you’ve already repressed the memory of it, here’s a refresher. Hours after an intimate encounter with her alien-infected boyfriend, the supposedly infertile Elizabeth Shaw ( Noomi Rapace ) finds out that she is, in fact, three months pregnant with something. Shaw, desperate to get the thing out of her, undergoes an impromptu Cesarean section in a futuristic self-surgery med-pod. Now you remember. We spoke with co-writer Damon Lindelof about the genesis of that sequence and why it works so well at creeping the hell out of everyone. Lindelof was quick to praise the sequence, but he almost as quickly shifted the credit to his co-writer. “The first thing, it’s one of my favorite scenes in the movie, certainly on an action level. It’s the most frightening and disturbing scene in the movie by far,” he said. “The second thing, this was Jon Spaihts’ idea.” Spaihts wrote the initial draft of “Prometheus,” which tied the story closer to the other films in the universe, as apparent in the scene’s original version. “In Jon’s draft, essentially Shaw gets a facehugger on her and gets implanted with a xenomorph, a traditional chest burster, so she used the med-pod to essentially extract this thing from her chest,” Lindelof said. So when he took a crack at the scene, Lindelof decided to relocate the foreign body to Shaw’s abdomen. “I thought it was an amazing sequence, but I said, ‘I think this scene is going to be even more upsetting and disturbing if it plays into the fertility and sexual aspects of the “Alien” universe,’ ” he said. “So things were rejiggered so that Holloway eventually impregnates Shaw, who is infertile, with his now enhanced or corrupted, depending on which way you look at it — I won’t confirm either here — DNA, so this is literally a fetus. It’s a child. The fact that she is pregnant was what I brought to it, and that was my story contribution to that sequence.” Then there was the actual performance, for which credit can only be given to Rapace. “Obviously Noomi was on that set for a couple days and the emotional intensity that she brought to what is intentionally an absurd sci-fi scenario — it really feels real and gritty and grounded and horrifying. I think she brought it to life,” he said. But even with Lindelof and Spaihts both providing the ingredients for the scene, Lindelof gives most of the credit to Scott. “Ridley, from the choreography of what the med-pod itself is doing — in terms of cutting her open and stapling her shut and removing this thing — what he shot practically versus what he did CGI and the answer is ‘very little,’ ” Lindelof said. “The majority of that scene is practical, minus her stomach actually being opened up with a laser beam and seeing her internal organs. Most of that stuff was done practical, which is very rare these days.” For Lindelof, Scott’s treatment of the scene harkens back to the most iconic scene from “Alien,” in a good way. “Kudos to [Scott]. Even the idea of trying to step up to and/or approach the John Hurt scene from the original film and say, ‘I want to do something that is as psychologically upsetting as that. It will be different, but let’s not try to repeat myself, but at the same time honor that,’ I think that he accomplished that and then some.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Prometheus.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Lindsay Lohan Claims BRAKES FAILED, Caused Crash

Lindsay Lohan. What she won’t think of next. The star is telling her friends that the BRAKES ON HER RENTED PORSCHE DID NOT WORK properly, thus causing her serious car accident Friday. Lohan slammed into the back of an 18-wheeler and is thankfully okay, as is the truck driver and the personal assistant traveling with Lindsay. It seems like the blame game is being played once again, however, as LiLo claimed the semi cut her off … and the truck driver says otherwise. Lindsay says that after the truck cut her off, she claims she slammed on the brakes and … nothing happened! Somehow – this is the best – Lindsay also says she was told the Porsche’s brakes on the rental were replaced two days before the crash. Is Lindsay Lohan subtly implying someone wanted her dead and cut her brakes so she’d crash?!? That sounds like a plot from NCIS: Los Angeles . Someone ought to write a Lohan Book of Excuses, because there have really been some all-timers, but in any case, she says she’s lucky to be alive. As for the guy driving the truck Lindsay smashed into? James (last name withheld) says her account is – you guessed it – a complete lie and he has the witnesses to prove it was all LiLo’s fault. James emphatically denied cutting her off and claims he has multiple witnesses that saw the actress “flying” down the Pacific Coast Highway. He says he couldn’t possibly have cut Lohan off because he was already in the right lane when the accident, which totaled her car, occurred. What’s more, he said Lindsay’s camp tried to bribe him at the scene of the accident in an effort to keep him quiet about the event. Lohan was also trying to flee the scene , he claims, and when he tried to stop her from doing so, her people tried to buy his silence. Sounds a little far-fetched … but you never know with Lindsay. Bottom line, girl, you make a lot of money. Just hire a freaking driver. [Photo: WENN.com]

Lady Gaga’s New Album Will Be ‘Insane’

‘Look out for the unexpected when it comes to her,’ Gaga’s co-manager says of the follow-up to Born This Way. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Jason Kempin/ Getty Images If there’s one positive that Lady Gaga fans can take from her decision to cancel a June 3 concert in Indonesia , perhaps it’s this: at least she’ll have more time to work on her album. Yes, though she’s currently in the midst of a two-year world tour, Gaga is already hard at work on the follow-up to 2011’s Born This Way and, according to her co-manager, she’s going to push the boundaries even further this time around (which is sure to please those Indonesian Islamic groups ). “There’s a lot of work to come, [I’m] very excited about it,” Vincent Herbert revealed in a new interview with website That Grape Juice. “[It’s] just [an] insane, great record. She’s on tour right now, but it’s just going to be a great record. Look out for the unexpected when it comes to her. We’re doing it on the road right now, so it’s a little hard, but it’s going to be great.” Herbert wouldn’t reveal specifics — tentative release date, title, who she’s been working with, etc. — about the new album, but the news that she’s recording on the road is actually in keeping with the way she began work on Born This Way, when standout tracks like “Marry The Night” took shape with producer Fernando Garibay during her long-running Monster Ball Tour. “I just kind of got on the American leg of the tour … and she goes, ‘I want to write another song that can define where I’m at with this album and my life,’ ” Garibay told MTV News last year. “I go back to the studio bus; I’m just working on parts … and then, two hours later, she comes offstage and she goes, ‘Do you have something to play me?’ And I go, ‘I do, actually.’ “So I played her the instrumental for ‘Marry the Night,’ and she goes, ‘Open up a mic,’ ” Garibay continued. “She starts laying down the whole song, like, off the cuff … right off the stage, using the energy of that crowd and going into the studio, it was amazing. I can’t compare it to anything.” What do you hope the Born This Way follow-up will sound like? Tell us in the comments section! Related Artists Lady Gaga

The Bridesmaids Vs. Ryan Gosling: Who Wrenched Your Guts?

Five cringe-worthy scenes vie for the Best Gut-Wrenching Performance at the MTV Movie Awards. Vote for your pick on MTV.com! By Kara Warner Ryan Gosling in “Drive” Photo: FilmDistrict Of all the unique and outlandish categories that the MTV Movie Awards have been known for each year, 2012’s new addition, Best Gut-Wrenching Performance , might be the most unique, outlandish and downright cringe-worthy of all. So what is a gut-wrenching moment? For our purposes, it is that one unforgettable scene in a recent movie that was so outrageous, disturbing or just plain gross that you had a physical reaction whilst watching it. A literal wrenching of your guts. No matter your reaction to this year’s very diverse nominees, be it the poo pies, head stomping or group food poisoning, we can almost guarantee the nominated moments in this new category left an impression on you. Here’s a closer look at those five gut-wrenching movie moments: Bryce Dallas-Howard, “The Help” For those who’ve seen “The Help,” there’s not much to say about this other than revenge is best served cold, in the form of a poo-laced pie. In the scene, Dallas-Howard — a double nominee this year — who plays the cringe-worthy and hateful villain Hilly Holbrook, scarfs down what looks to be a delicious chocolate pie. Hilly and the audience soon find out that the pie has an extra “special” ingredient: poop. Jonah Hill and Rob Riggle, “21 Jump Street” Moving on to our next nominee, from poop to a detached penis. (Did we mention these moments are gut-wrenching?) In the final few minutes of one of the year’s funniest comedies, “21 Jump Street,” Jonah Hill accidentally shoots off Rob Riggle’s penis, after which the handcuffed and injured party is forced to retrieve his dismembered man parts with his mouth. Bonus fact about this scene: Riggle improvised the mouth pick-up . Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper, “Bridesmaids” While there are multiple memorable scenes in “Bridesmaids,” one of them stands out as the messiest. While shopping at a swanky boutique for their dresses, the bride and her five bridesmaids are simultaneously hit with a tidal wave of food poisoning that causes them to lose their lunch in every conceivable way. Ryan Gosling, “Drive” While Ryan Gosling made many women swoon with his wooing of Emma Stone in “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” his turn as the cold, calculated and deadly driver in “Drive” had the opposite effect. Gosling’s most gut-wrenching scene is a furious display of skull stomping never before seen on film. Talk about cringe-worthy, that elevator stomp is off the charts. Tom Cruise, “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” This last nominated moment is the least gross of the bunch and also the most impressive given the physical feat achieved to produce it. In “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” Tom Cruise’s super spy Ethan Hunt scales the planet’s tallest building, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, in a race against a nuclear clock. Cruise actually performed the stunt, which required him to dangle a mere 2,700 feet from the ground. Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now!
