She is the first woman, the first Black person and the first LGBT individual to serve in this role. Mutcherson started her journey at Rutgers 17 years ago as an assistant professor. She then moved up the ranks and in 2015 was named vice dean of the New Jersey-based university’s law school. Mutcherson—who earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a juris doctorate degree from Columbia Law School—has conducted research surrounding reproductive justice. During her career she’s worked with the Center for Reproductive Rights and the HIV Law Project. “I am thrilled to be able to continue my service to Rutgers law as co-dean,” said Mutcherson, according to the Philadelphia Tribune . “I know that our institution has a very bright future and will continue to provide a high-quality legal education and produce lawyers who change the profession and the world for the better.” Rutgers University-Camden Chancellor Phoebe A. Haddon said that Mutcherson will play an integral role in building upon the momentum and energy at Rutgers Law. “She is passionate about the value of a legal education that prepares creative thinkers who are ready to be leaders in virtually every aspect of our society. She sees with clarity the role of the law in protecting individual rights” said Haddon. Mutcherson started her new role on January 1. Her appointment comes just months after Olivette Otele made history by becoming the first Black woman history professor in the UK after being selected to teach at Bath Spa University. Seriously?! Teacher Fired For Making Black Students Play Slaves In Class Is Now Suing For Reverse Discrimination

Source: Kazunori Nagashima / Getty Teacher Fired Over Slavery Lesson Plans To Sue For $1 Billion A white public school teacher is planning to sue New York City for $1 billion after she was fired over a controversial lesson on slavery. Patricia Cummings was fired back in October after complaints about the highly unorthodox teaching method, which left some students feeling humiliated and singled out. She was accused of having black students lie on the floor while she stepped on their backs among other things, leading to her demise. But on Thursday, Cummings insisted that she initiated the lesson in her class at MS 118 in the Bronx in good faith–and only one student and her parent out of the entire class objected. Her firing–and all of the online criticism to go with it–has rendered this woman permanently unemployable, she said at a press conference alongside her lawyer, Thomas Liotti. “I have no career at this point,” she claimed. Cummings filed a $120 million lawsuit in Suffolk County, where she lives, against a slew of defendants ranging from the city Department of Education to Mayor Bill de Blasio to media outlets. But Liotti said they plan to build a $1 billion class-action case with other teachers claiming similar forms of reverse discrimination. Cummings said she was initially cleared after an internal school investigation but that the case was revived after media reports on the incident. The teacher also said her suit will be supported by the testimony of a black teacher at the school who witnessed the lesson and reportedly found it effective. Sure, Jan. “That 20 seconds of a teachable moment changed my life,” she said, also adding that she was bombarded with emails calling for her murder and dubbing her a racist. “Anyone who has met me knows I don’t have that bone in my body,” she claimed. “I was brought up — you treat everybody the way you want to be treated.” Liotta argued on Thursday that the lesson only drew objections because of his client’s race.“How does the City of New York expect to attract effective teachers when people like Patricia Cummings have to go through this kind of abuse? It’s outrageous.” The Education Department initially reassigned Cummings before firing her after an investigation, according to agency spokesman Doug Cohen. “Ms. Cummings was terminated based on a thorough investigation and a review of her performance as an educator,” Cohen said Thursday. “We’ll review the complaint.” Continue reading

Jesus Take The Attendance Sheet: 32-Year-Old Pretends To Be Teen So She Can Enroll In High School

Source: Mary Knox Merrill / Getty She Really Tried It A 32-year-old woman was clearly up to no good when she pretended to be a homeless teen so she could enroll in high school classes. According to WNYT.com , Michaelann Goodrich told the Cairo-Durham School District in New York that she was a 15-year-old named Riley Madison. She reportedly attended one day of high school classes and even rode the bus to and from school on December 20th. She was absent on the 21st and then the holiday break began the next week. Authorities arrested Goodrich on the 28th and charged her with offering a false instrument for filing, falsifying business records and criminal trespassing. Investigators are still unsure of how Goodrich was able to enroll in classes in the first place. District Superintendent Anthony Taibi said administrators immediately felt something wasn’t right. “She could’ve gone in numerous different ways to obtain a degree and we actually found out through the investigation and that she has a high school diploma,” he said. “So that just leads to our investigation to try to figure out what exactly her motive was for attending school.” According to Taibi, the district had to admit Goodrich into the school immediately under the McKinney-Vento Act because she was homeless. Parents in the neighborhood were obviously distraught when they found out about the over-aged high school attendee. “It was kind of unnerving, it could’ve been anybody you know you hear about school shootings all that, could’ve been anybody coming in here trying to get plans of the school,” said Joshua Mack, who has a daughter in middle school. “I mean obviously that wasn’t the case but it could’ve been.” Taibi said that the McKinney-Vento Act should probably be re-assessed after a situation where non-teens can slip through the cracks. Mack agreed with the sentiment. “I don’t know maybe they need to look into the act a little better maybe find out–not throw her in school right away, find out where she came from, find out what’s going on with the family and everything,” Mack said. The case surrounding Goodrich is still active and investigators are asking anyone who may have had contact with Goodrich to contact the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.

SMH: Kentucky Teacher Arrested After Throwing NYE Party And Letting Kids Drink & Smoke Weed

Source: SOPA Images / Getty Special Ed Teacher Arrested After Throwing NYE Party With Underage Kids A special-education teacher in Kentucky was arrested for throwing a New Year’s Eve party for a group of 40 people, which included 14 underage guests who were drinking alcohol and smoking weed. On Tuesday at around 1 in the morning, the Mount Washington police were called to the home of Lindsey E. Lewis, a 36-year-old teacher at the Phoenix School of Discovery in Louisville, Kentucky. The cops were called after a neighbor claimed that teens had destroyed her property while attending the teacher’s New Year’s Eve party, according to reports from local news site  WDRB . The police report sent to  WDRB   said that 14 children were in attendance at the party. A few of the teens tried to leave when the police showed up, and others admitted that they had consumed alcohol and smoked pot. The local news site also reported that the smell of marijuana was very obvious in Lewis’s home, cans and bottles of alcohol were present, and Lewis appeared to be under the influence when police arrived. According to WDRB, police say Lewis “knowingly hosted a party in which she knew or assisted” with the underage children consuming illegal substances. She ended up being charged with 14 counts of engaging in an unlawful transaction with a minor. An 18-year-old party guest named Tristan Cornett was also arrested for possession of both marijuana and methamphetamines, according to  WAVE 3 News. District spokesperson Renee Murphy told WDRB that Lewis, who has been a teacher at the school since 2016, will report for reassignment during her legal proceedings.
