Kim Kardashian Calls for Gun Control in Wake of Florida Shooting

Kim Kardashian has taken a break from stripping nearly all the way down to address the most pressing issue currently facing our country: Gun control. In the wake of 17 people being gunned down at a school in Florida on Wednesday, the reality star has chosen to use her social media platform for something worthwhile right now. We’re not saying photos such as THIS ONE are not worthwhile, of course. But they are certainly meaningless in the wake of this horrific school shooting. “We owe it to our children and our teachers to keep them safe while at school,” Kim Tweeted last night, adding: “Prayers won’t do this: action will. Congress, please do your job and protect Americans from senseless gun violence.” The mother of three is reacting here to the way in which most politicians offer “thoughts and prayers” after a shooting of this nature. But we didn’t vote them into office to deliver hollow platitudes, Kim is arguing. We voted them into office to actually pass legislation. On Wednesday afternoon, a 19-year old named Nikolas Cruz opened fire on students and staff members at  Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. He used an automatic rifle to end the lives of these 17 people, while injuring many others. In the hours since this tragedy took place, a debate has once again arisen over whether new gun control measures ought to be put in place. Along with her own message on the topic, Kardashian re-Tweeted a number of other points people made on Twitter in regard to this contentious issue. To wit: This actually isn’t the first time Kardashian has pushed for gun control of some kind. In November of 2016, she talked to Kendall Jenner about the issue, emphasizing how important it is for celebrities to get involved in various political debates. Just consider the reach they have, she stated. Watch the clip below:  Kim Kardashian Pushes for Gun Control Just over a week since this scene was filmed, Kardashian slammed Congress about it failed to pass meaningful legislation. “Nothing has changed!!!! People continue to senselessly die. When will these gun laws be changed?!?!?!?!!!!?????” she asked on Twitter at the time, adding: “The fact that anyone can so easily access guns is so scary & after all of the devastating loss the Senate should have not failed us!!!” We almost never say this about Kim Kardashian, but… we agree. We agree completely with everything she is saying here. In televised remarks from the White House Diplomatic Reception Room on Thursday morning, President Donald Trump said he was committed to making schools safe and to tackle the issue of “mental health” in America. He did not say anything about gun control. “I want to speak now directly to America’s children, especially those who feel lost alone confused or even scared,” he added. “I want you to know that you are never alone, and you never will be. “You have people who care about you, who love you and who will do anything at all to protect you. “If you need help, turn to a teacher, a family member, a local police officer or a faith leader. Answer hate with love. Answer cruelty with kindness.” That sounds terrific in theory. In practice, answering an automatic weapon with kindness will simply get you killed. Local 10 News reports that a 14-year-old girl at Miami Carol City Senior High School is accusing three boys of raping her on different occasions. The girl told authorities that in two of the incidents she made it clear she was uncomfortable and at one point was “pulled into a restroom” by her sweater. “I was so shocked and I was kind of traumatized, and I was scared in that moment that when I was in the restroom with him, I was never going to leave,” the girl said. The girl’s mother now says investigators told her that one of the boy’s relatives came forward and said he was HIV positive — a claim the boy’s family later took back. ‘They’ Schools: Study Shows American Kids (And Teachers) Are Dismally Uneducated About Slavery

Kean Collection/Getty Images High School Students And Educators Woefully Uninformed About Slavery This should come as no surprise as many times as we’ve posted about some of the stupid lessons on slavery kids are receiving in the US, but a new report released by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance project reveals the widespread failure to accurately teach the history of American slavery and enslaved people. According to Atlantic reports Teaching Tolerance conducted online surveys of 1,000 American high-school seniors and more than 1,700 social-studies teachers across the country. The group also reviewed 10 commonly used U.S.-history textbooks, and examined 15 sets of state standards to assess what students know, what educators teach, what publishers include, and what standards require vis-à-vis slavery. What they found was that only 8 percent of 12th-graders could identify slavery as the cause of the Civil War. Fewer than one-third (32 percent) correctly named the 13th Amendment as the formal end of U.S. slavery, with a slightly higher share (35 percent) choosing the Emancipation Proclamation. And fewer than half (46 percent) identified the “Middle Passage” as the transport of enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to North America. Fewer than one-quarter (22 percent) of participating high-school seniors knew that “protections for slavery were embedded in [America’s] founding documents”—that rather than a “peculiar institution” of the South, slavery was a Constitutionally enshrined right. And fewer than four in 10 students surveyed (39 percent) understood how slavery “shaped the fundamental beliefs of Americans about race and whiteness.” The teachers didn’t do much better than the students. While teachers overwhelmingly (92 percent) claim they are “comfortable discussing slavery” in their classroom, only slightly more than half (52 percent) teach their students about slavery’s legal roots in the nation’s founding documents, while just 53 percent emphasize the extent of slavery outside of the antebellum South. And 54 percent teach the continuing legacy of slavery in today’s society. Additionally, dozens of teachers rely on “simulations”—role-playing and games—to teach slavery, a method that Teaching Tolerance has warned against on the grounds that it can lead to stereotypes and oversimplification. Meanwhile, a large majority—73 percent—use “slaves” when talking about slavery in the classroom instead of “enslaved persons” (49 percent), the latter term of which has gained favor for emphasizing the humanity of those forced into bondage. That’s a strong point about slaves vs. enslaved persons. Did you ever consider the impact of the wording? Also those games and simulations are how so many teachers are getting in trouble. Teachers — stop playing GAMES. Just keep it 100 with the kids and make sure they know HUMANS were treated INHUMANELY! LaGarrett King, an assistant professor of social-studies education at the University of Missouri, served on the Teaching Tolerance advisory board that developed a framework for teaching American slavery—basically, the concepts that every graduating high-school senior should know—as part of the report’s recommendations. As a teacher educator, he said the study fills a significant void. Students training to be teachers, especially those being educated to teach in elementary schools, know little about the history of slavery, he stated, noting that “much curriculum and teaching around racially and ethnically diverse [people] features a fun—foods and festival—approach to learning.” By contrast, King said, the framework provides a guide to delve into topics such as slavery and black history with a thorough and academically sound approach, versus teaching slavery in reductive and superficial ways. “Can you teach slavery without it being psychologically violent to the children? The answer is no, violence will occur and is expected,” he said. “The key is the recognition of white supremacy and [of] the humanity of black people that helps aid in the complexity of the subject.” What steps do you think need to be taken to make sure that the harsh realities of slavery and the impact of the institution on America overall are taught? White High School Students Make Video Screaming “F**k Black People, White Supremacy, B*tch!” Over Drake And Kodak Black Music

Arkansas HS Students Suspended Over Racist Comments A couple of students from Fayetteville High Scholl in Arkansas thought it would be an AMAZING idea to blast some Kodak Black and Drake in their home, and then take to SnapChat and exclaim “F*ck Black People” and “White Supremacy, B*tch!” where all their friends could see. As folks whose brains are fully developed know, the internet is forever and SnapChats don’t always disappear into the ether the way you’d like them to. Hence why we have a (blurred) copy of the vid in question here: One of their friends’ mothers caught wind of what was going on, and shared it with the school and other parents. According to Metro UK , despite the fact that the incident occurred off-grounds, the school’s officials deemed it in violation of the code of conduct and suspended each of the kids for a week. The video, of course, coincided with the start of Black History Month . We’re assuming they thought it would be HILARIOUS, but of course, it backfired and they issued a weak apologies their mothers made them write: We were wrong, and we sincerely apologize for what we said and for the harm that was caused at Fayetteville High School and in our family. Leah Messer Fights to Prevent Teen Pregnancy: Hero or Hypocrite?

After years of turmoil marked by addiction, multiple divorces, and countless accusations of shoddy parenting , Leah Messer appears to have found a modicum of happiness and stability in her life. And in admirable fashion, she frequently expresses gratitude for her good fortune. These days, the MTV fan favorite is making it clear that her primary career goal is not lining her pockets, but setting a positive example for her millions of impressionable fans. In the early days of the Teen Mom franchise, both stars and producers stated that their objective was not merely to entertain but to shed light on the difficulties faced by young first-time parents. Obviously, in the years since, that intention has been overshadowed by the casts’ celebrity status and high-profile feuds. But as a mother of three daughters it seems Leah is still focused on spreading the word about the perils of teenage pregnancy. In recent weeks, Leah has been engaged in an ongoing open conversation with her social media followers about the importance of sex education and equal access to birth control. “So proud of you!!! You are such a strong woman! From one teen mom to another I look up to you a lot. Thank you for being you,” one tweeted to Leah this week. “You’re welcome! It’s not easy but I hope all of us girls can continue to prevent teen pregnancy by sharing our story/struggles! That’s the goal,” Leah replied. Yes, Leah has eagerly reminded viewers of the show’s original mission statement several times in the past few weeks. It seems that like many critics of the show, she now feels that Teen Mom 2 has had the opposite of its intended effect. While teen pregnancies have been on the decline in recent years, there are certainly young viewers of the show for whom the prospect of getting pregnant at a young age has only become more attractive by MTV’s most popular shows. Leah seems to be aware of this, and she also seems genuine in her hopes to dispel the notion that a teen pregnancy is something to aspire to. For the most part, Ms. Messer has been lauded for her efforts. Of course, her comments have attracted their fair share of criticism as well. Some have derided Leah as a hypocrite and expressed their belief that a woman who welcomed three children before her mid-twenties and benefited enormously by doing so, she’s not the best representative of the dangers of teen pregnancy. But Leah has repeatedly made it clear that good fortunate of the kind that she’s experienced is increasingly uncommon. Hopefully, the same young fans who look at Leah’s life these days and see an aspirational figure will also bear in mind that Ms. Messer went through hell to get to where she is today. Watch Teen Mom 2 online to relive all of Leah’s struggles. View Slideshow: Leah Messer Addresses Drug Use Allegations: Should Fans Be Concerned?
