Stop The Violence: 49-Year-Old Pasadena Coach Gunned Down Outside His Home As He Walked Friend To Car On Christmas Day

A black man who raised two sons and mentored countless others, gunned down on his lawn on Christmas day. SMH. This is that bullisht for real. Only 49-years-old, McClinton grew up without a father, but thanks to the Pasadena sports program he created, hundreds of kids counted and depended on him. Via L.A. Times reports : At 11 o’clock on Christmas morning, 18-year law enforcement technician Victor McClinton was shot and killed outside his Pasadena home as he walked a holiday well-wisher and fellow coach to his car in the 1900 block of Newport Avenue. According to the Pasadena Police Department, McClinton was struck by gunfire meant for a former gang member who was in the vicinity but not associated with McClinton or the visiting coach. The target of the shooting, whom police identified as Damion Taylor, 24, was struck and wounded. “There’s no indication to believe McClinton was involved in any type of activity that would warrant anyone to shoot him,” said Deputy Chief Darryl Qualls. Friends and neighbors were still reeling from the news of McClinton’s death. “I was overwhelmed with shock and grief that such a selfless man could be taken,” said Glenn Crawford, 57, who coached in the Brotherhood Community Youth Sports League for 10 years. “It’s just senseless. He would literally take the shirt off his back for you.” On Wednesday, a small memorial of votive candles and flowers was arranged on the sidewalk in front of McClinton’s home. Theresa Overing said she stopped by to bring food and offer her support to the family. “Victor was one of the finest men, he stood taller than the rest,” she said. Overing, a Pasadena resident, said she got to know McClinton through the youth sports league he founded. Her three sons had played basketball there over the last 10 years. “When you run [programs for] hundreds of kids every year, all on volunteer time, there are hundreds of families that have been impacted by Victor,” Overing said. Lorraine Valenzuela, McClinton’s neighbor of seven years, said she was in her living room on Christmas Day when she heard the first shot. “I looked out the window and I saw him drop,” she said. Valenzuela said she heard about eight more shots as she ran to the back of her house. “In general the area is nice,” she said. “We’ve been hearing [gunshots] lately, though.” McClinton is survived by his wife, Shelly, and two adult sons, Kristian and Kameron, an official said. He was assigned to court services. “He was an extraordinary employee,” said Steve Whitmore, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman. “We lost a member of our family. It’s a tragic loss.” McClinton was a graduate of Verbum Dei High School and attended Pasadena City College, majoring in recreation and administration of justice, according to the program’s website. Authorities said they did not have any suspects in the case but were investigating whether there is a link to a second fatal incident that occurred later in the day in the same area. Shortly before being shot, McClinton wished his friends a merry Christmas on Facebook. “Please let’s not forget those less fortunate than us and those who have lost loved ones,” he wrote. “Say a prayer for all. May God bless you in the upcoming year.” This story hurts us to our hearts. This gun violence has got to stop. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Photo Credit: BHCSports.org

Philadelphia to Install Condom Dispensers in High School

Call us crazy, but we think a new Philadelphia high school program may create a bit of controversy. According to ABC News, the city – in response to a new report that cites five percent of its high schoolers have tested positive for STDs – is installing condom dispensers in the 22 schools with the highest rates of these diseases. “We believe distributing condoms is part of our obligation to keep students healthy and to remain healthy,” said school district spokesman Fernando Gallard. “The health department has described this as a continued epidemic of STDs among teenagers in Philadelphia.” Approximately 130,000 high school students in the Philadelphia area have been tested over the past five years, with 6,500 of those coming out positives for STDs that include HIV. As a result, when students return from Christmas break, they will be greeted by machines in the nurse’s office that provide free protection. The condoms will be available to all, unless parents sign an “opt out” form. HOWEVER, the schools do not plan on actually enforcing these forms. “Opt-out letters are to be maintained by the school office,” Assistant Superintendent Dennis W. Creedon wrote. “Students are to honor the wishes of their parents. If a student disrespects their guardian’s directive, that is an issue of the home.” Overall, according to nonprofit organization Advocates for Youth, at least 418 schools across the country supply condoms to their students. How do you feel about this practice?   It’s the smart thing to do It’s a greenlight for teens to have sex Where can I get some?!? View Poll »

Ho Sit Down: Sarah Silverman Defends Quentin Tarantino’s Use Of The N-Word: “You Can’t Tell Art What To Do”

That’s a slippery slope you’re sliding down… Sarah Silverman Defends Quentin Tarantino’s Use Of The N-Word In D’Jango Unchained According to Sarah Silverman, Spike Lee isn’t respecting the code of artists that declares that any and everything can and will be used in composing creative works. Lee recently sparked controversy after he deemed Tarantino’s latest piece of cinema, D’Jango Unchained , “disrespectful to (his) ancestors” due to the use of the N-word over 100 times. While out in Los Angeles, Silverman was asked what she thought of Spike’s refusal to see D’Jango According to Silverman: “Doesn’t it take place like during slavery? Wouldn’t it be odd if they didn’t have that horrific word in it?” “I think slave owners said it a lot, that’s why it has a stigma to this day.” While Silverman does claim to be a huge Spike Lee fan, she also acknowledges that he has some strange opinions when it comes to film. “I love Spike Lee, we were just talking about School Daze, but he’s a got a lot of mishegas (yiddish word for “crazy weird isht”) with art. I think you can’t really tell art what to do” What do you think about the use of the n-word so repetitively in D’Jango? Are you too offended by the word to even SEE the movie??? Image via WENN

Shots Fired: Gun Advocates Want Piers Morgan Deported Back To Merry Old England “For Attacking 2nd Amendment”

Gun supporters ain’t too happy with Piers Morgan … Gun Advocates Want Piers Morgan Deported Via RadarOnline reports: Critics of the Surrey, England native are up in arms over his comments about gun control and they’ve started a petition to have the CNN host deported from the United States. As RadarOnline.com reported, Morgan came out with guns blazing Tuesday night when he repeatedly clashed with a gun proponent who advocated allowing teachers to carry weapons in the classroom in wake of the school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut. At one point, the outspoken Brit said to his guest: “You’re an unbelievably stupid man, aren’t you?” Now pro-gun advocates are firing back, by launching an effort to send the Piers Morgan Tonight anchor packing. Their petition, which has been submitted on a White House website, had 23,983 signatures on Sunday afternoon, just short of the 25,000 needed before the White House is required to address the petition. The deport Morgan petition reads: “British Citizen and CNN television host Piers Morgan is engaged in a hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution by targeting the Second Amendment. We demand that Mr. Morgan be deported immediately for his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and for exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens.” But 47-year-old Morgan is taking it all in stride. He tweeted: ‘Ironic U.S. gun rights campaign to deport me for ‘attacking 2nd Amendment rights’ – is my opinion not protected under 1st Amendment rights?” He followed it up with a link to the petition, writing: ‘Just 4821 signatures needed to take my deportation petition to the point Obama has to respond. I urge you to sign.’ Morgan even went as far as to retweet one critic’s post and corrected the man’s grammar. ‘It’s ‘your’ > RT @timothy14511: @piersmorgan nothing but a constitution hating commie…go back and stay in YOU’RE country not mine,’ Morgan wrote. Ouch!

NRA Blames Newtown Tragedy On The Movies, Of Course

The NRA finally broke its week-long silence after the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut today with a press conference — technically a speech, as no questions were answered — that proved once again that reactionaries are as terrible at popular culture as they are at generating positive outcomes from their preferred policies. The real culprit to blame for tragedies such as Newtown, according to NRA Vice President Wayne LaPierre? Movies. In Washington, D.C., LaPierre delivered an obtuse tirade to assembled journalists in which, per the current fashion, he blamed numerous video games like Bulletstorm and Grand Theft Auto before laying into the movie industry. “We have bloodsoaked films out there like American Psycho , Natural Born Killers ,” he said. “They’re aired on propaganda loops called Splatterdays, and every single day.” Yes, he said ‘splatterdays,’ a word no one has ever used. LaPierre also offered the organization’s prescription for solving the problem of frequent mass killings: stuff our schools with guns. LaPierre claimed that rules prohibiting guns in public schools contribute to these killings, suggesting that “We need to have every single school in America immediately deploy a protection program proven to work — and by that I mean armed security.” He then announced that the NRA will be funding a “safety” program for interested schools dubbed the “National School Shield Emergency Response Program” which, if implemented as described in the press conference, would significantly militarize the educational experience. Far be it from me to point out the ridiculousness of blaming films from 12 and 22 years ago for violence which occurred last week — though for what it’s worth, I can’t recall seeing any 24/7 marathon of any of Oliver Stone’s lesser movies. We’ll just note instead that, as if to add a particularly grim punchline, at the same time LaPierre embarrassed himself and his organization on the national stage, another unspeakable tragedy happened: Three people were killed by a Pennsylvania gunman who then took his own life. Notably, guns are not prohibited on Pennsylvania roads. I’ll wait with bated breath for the film the NRA will blame for that. 11-Year-Old Brings Gun to School to Protect Class, Citing Fear of Newtown-Style Attack

An 11-year-old Utah boy brought a gun to school to protect himself from a Newtown-style attack, then showed the pistol to classmates during recess, according to reports. He was detained on assault and weapons charges, a school spokesman said. 11-Year-Old Brings Gun To School The boy, a sixth-grader, took the unloaded .22-caliber handgun to his school south of Salt Lake City in his backpack on Monday, the spokesman added. Some ammunition was also found in the 11-year-old’s backpack, but it did not appear to go with the gun, according the spokesman, Ben Horsley. No one was injured in the incident, which occurred as jittery parents, teachers and students around the country faced their week at school since Friday’s massacre. Twenty children and six adult staffers at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, were shot to death then by a lone gunman, Adam Lanza . One 11-year-old Utah boy says he feared a similar attack. The West Kearns Elementary student insisted he brought the gun to school to “protect himself and his friends from a Connecticut-style incident,” Horsley said. He is accused of waving the gun at three classmates during recess, however. One of those students and a second classmate alerted their teacher, who “immediately took the student into custody and took him down to the principal’s office,” Horsley said. After being briefly questioned, the boy (who has not been publicly identified) admitted bringing the gun to school, and the weapon was recovered minutes later. Some parents questioned the decision not to initiate a security “lockdown,” but school administrators reasoned that it made no sense to risk alarming students. The boy was booked into a local juvenile detention center on one count of possession of a deadly weapon on school property and three counts of aggravated assault. He was also suspended from school indefinitely. Horsley described the boy’s parents as shocked and cooperative; police found the gun belonged to a relative who has been living temporarily with the family. He said the community was “rightfully” shaken by the incident. “Because of the tragic shooting in Connecticut , people’s emotions with respect to children’s safety is right at the surface, and we’re just as concerned as the parents.”
