Russia’s Peatland Fires May Continue Burning Underground Through Winter

photo: praegerr via flickr Burning for some weeks now, the fires in Russia are not only causing Moscow’s daily death rate to double as smog engulfs the city, but are also emitting tons of greenhouse gas emissions as drained peatlands burn. What’s worse,

A massive, "unprecedented escape" of genetically-modified crops into the wild

Genetically-modified canola has been breeding undetected in the American wilds for at least “several generations,” say scientists. The escaped GM canola has already mutated into a never-before-seen strain, and now it may be modifying other plants too. Canola is a yellow flowering plant that is used to make oil. Researchers working in North Dakota, found strains of transgenic canola growing wild on roadsides far from local farms – meaning the GM plants had spread quite far. They found two strains of transgenic canola. According to Nature: “The extent of the escape is unprecedented,” says Cynthia Sagers, an ecologist at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, who led the research team that found the canola (Brassica napus, also known as rapeseed). Sagers and her team found two varieties of transgenic canola in the wild – one modified to be resistant to Monsanto's Roundup herbicide (glyphosate), and one resistant to Bayer Crop Science's Liberty herbicide (gluphosinate). They also found some plants that were resistant to both herbicides, showing that the different GM plants had bred to produce a plant with a new trait that did not exist anywhere else. Sagers says the previous discoveries in other countries of transgenic canola populations growing outside of cultivation were often in or near fields used for commercial transgenic canola production. By contrast, her research team found feral populations of herbicide-resistant canola growing along roads, near petrol stations and grocery stores, often at large distances from areas of agricultural production. http://io9.com/5609576/a-massive-unprecedented-escape-of-genetically+modified-cr… added by: Sexirobot

Financier Made $1 Billion Bet on Oil During BP Spill

Image via CNN The billionaire financier Carl Icahn snapped up $929 million worth of shares in oil-related energy companies in the months following the explosion at the Deepwater Horizon site , new reports are revealing. Icahn made the nearly $1 billion bet as shares in the industry were falling to all-time lows, and it’s thought that this investment helped the energy sector rebound in July. But what I want to focus on is the nature of Icahn’s bet: His $1 billion bet was based … Read the full story on TreeHugger

17 Nations Beat or Equal All-Time Heat Records This Summer

photo: Umair Mohsin via flickr If Russia’s current heatwave being the worst in 1000 years and doubling the daily death rate in Moscow wasn’t enough, check out this sweaty stat: According to Wunder Blog (via Mongabay ), already this summer 17 nations have set or matched their all-time heat records. Not to mention an all-time hottest temperature for Pakistan, and possibly all of Asia…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Planted or Un-Planted, Manmade Wetlands Make Good Carbon Sinks – New Research Shows How

photo: Dean Forbes via flickr Restoring wetlands is great way to reestablish natural carbon sinks –a low-risk geoengineering method–and reap the benefits of the ecosystem services they provide. Now researchers from Ohio State University have demonstrated that after 15 years, it doesn’t matter if those wetla… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Fructose Can Accelerate Growth of Cancer Cells: Study

Photo: nateOne (Flickr) As if the annoying, misleading ads from the makers of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) weren’t enough food for thought already, CBS News reports that researchers from UCLA have found that fructose — which is a component of HFCS (a suspected culprit in America’s obesit… Read the full story on TreeHugger

How Can President Obama Cut Carbon Emissions Without a Climate Bill?

photo: Beth Rankin via flickr With Congress still not able to get out of its own way and actually move forward any legislation with the word ‘climate’ in it, what options does President Obama have to make good on his oft-stated commitments to make reductions in greenhouse gas emissions? Leaving aside the EPA mandating carbon emission reductions (remember it’s now officially a pollutant), over at

Massive Russian Seed Bank of Berries at Risk of Demolition

Photo: Pavlovsk Station, one of the world’s first seed banks begun by Nikolai Vavilov in 1926. Vavilov personally collected seeds of over 200,000 plants ( HuffPo ) It could be a potentially devastating loss for global biodiversity: we’ve caught word over at Huffington Post that the world’s largest collection of fruit and berries, housed in one of the world’s oldest seed banks outside St. Petersburg, Russia may be demolished later this year for a housing … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Little Brown Bat Will Be Pushed to Extinction by Spreading White Nose Syndrome: New Study

photo: US Fish & Wildlife Service via flickr White nose syndrome , a disease caused by exposure to a particular fungus, first discovered in 2006, has been afflicting bats in the eastern United States and appears to be spreading . Considering that it’s already killed more than a million bats, that’s worrisome enough, but new r… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Biologist Creates Noah’s Ark-Style Preserve for Animals Threatened by Gulf Oil Disaster

Photo via Sunphol Sorakul The Gulf oil disaster is having a massive impact on wildlife, with waves of animal deaths continuing into the foreseeable future thanks to both the oil and toxic clean-up methods. The disaster is so great that the extinction of some species is not an outlandish possibility, so it seems like a good idea to create a sanctuary elsewhere for the species who call the gulf home until the oil can be cleaned up. Naturalist Jack Rudloe has started just such a haven at his home in Tallahassee, building a Noah’s Ark-style preserve… Read the full story on TreeHugger
