Barbara Walters’ 10 Most Fascinating People of the Year: Revealed!

Barbara Walters’ always-highly anticipated “10 Most Fascinating People of the Year” list for 2013 has been revealed, with the notable exception of the #1 spot. Miley Cyrus, obviously, is on the list (she is also rumored to be in the running for Time Person of the Year ) along with future monarch Prince George. Speaking of babies, celebrity royalty North West was snubbed, though her famous folks, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are both on the list. The lineup also includes Robin Roberts, A&E’s Duck Dynasty stars , Jennifer Lawrence, Diana Nyad, Pope Francis, and NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. If the current list of personalities are any indication of who will top Barbara Walters’ final list before retiring in 2014, it’s sure to raise some eyebrows. Walters first began choosing her Most Fascinating People in 1993 and will include a “20 Years of 10 Most Fascinating People” segment in this year’s special. That telecast, and with it the #1 Most Fascinating Person of 2013, will be revealed on December 18. Who do you think tops the list in her eyes? And yours?

Dragon Con Co-Founder Pleads Guilty to Child Molestation, Gets House Arrest

Ed Kramer, co-founder of Dragon Con, pled guilty to three counts of child molestation this morning in Atlanta, Georgia, over 13 years after the first allegations that he sodomized three young boys were made.  As a condition of his plea, Kramer was given 5 years for each count to run concurrently which a judge reduced to 34 months of  house arrest , ordered to pay a $100,000 fine to each of his victims, and is required to register as a sex offender.  HOUSE ARREST for molestation after avoiding prosecution for 13 years! In October of 2000, two boys, then 13 and 15, alleged that he had molested them while they slept over at the science-fiction conference creator’s house. Just before prosecutors were set to go to trial in 2003, a third young man came forward with allegations of his own which dated back to 1996. Kramer has avoided a trial for the past 13 years citing health reasons which would prohibit him from spending full days in a court room. Doctors have stated that he could only handle up to three hours at a time in court because of his use of a respirator, and that he would require a 90 minute break in between each 3 hour court session, making going to trial nearly impossible. A Gwinnett County district attorney stated in 2010 that he believed much of Kramer’s health complaints to be fabricated to avoid going to trial. Earlier this year, Kramer’s former business partners announced that he would no longer profit from Dragon Con when former attendees threatened to boycott the conference because of the molestation charges. He was paid an undisclosed amount for his share of the conference.

Whale Explodes in Graphic Video: Watch at Your Own Risk!

A dead sperm whale literally exploded after it was pierced by a resident of Denmark’s Faroe Islands, in the North Atlantic, and it was all caught on video. Its innards blasting out sideways as if it were an enormous volcano, the footage is as incredible as it is graphic. Watch it at your own risk below! Sperm Whale Explodes The whale had already died of natural causes. This did not kill it. The fisherman above was reportedly tasked with cutting up the carcass to avoid further health risks, but struck a gas pocket through the whale’s blubber. Combustion of decomposing sea life has been reported before. Putrefying fish consumed by the marine mammal prior to its death likely created a buildup of gas, Science Channel biologist Adam Ruben explained. The network also says that dead whales have been known to emit methane and hydrogen sulphide, as well as ammonia. Call it what you want … wow. National Geographic reports that sperm whales are bigger than a school bus and can eat about a ton of fish and squid a day. That’s for one animal. They are listed as “vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List Of Threatened Species, though they do not hunt whales on the Faroe Islands, where this took place. While commercial whaling has lessened, entanglement in fishing nets, collisions with ships and ingestion of marine debris are all significant threats.

Study Shows That More Than 20% Of Black And Hispanic Teenagers Have Sent Freaky Phone Messages And Pics Before!

The iPimps and the eHoes are increasing at a rapid rate among our children Study Shows Sexting Highest Among African-American And Hispanic Teens Via NBCNews More than 20 percent of black and Hispanic teens say they have used their cellphones to send a “sext” message showing a nekkid or semi-nekkid photo or video of themselves to another person, and more than 30 percent say they have received such sex messages, according to a new study. The research was done by University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and funded by the Centers for Disease Control and the U.S. Department of Health Services. Why the focus on the two groups? “Although sex messages among U.S. youth has received much popular media attention, there are only limited data on its prevalence among ethnic minority youth,” say the researchers in their study, published online journal, Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking. The concern about sex messages, the researchers say, is whether it “impacts other behaviors and health outcomes among youth and adults and, if so, what is the direction of the impact.” That said, not every scientist is convinced that sexting will lead to ho-ish tendencies. Balderdash, says Deb Levine, the executive director and founder of the Internet Sexuality Information Services, based in San Francisco, which uses the Internet and mobile apps and texts to share information about sexual health, disease prevention and assault. “From a public health perspective, we have not as yet identified ‘sex messaging’ as a risky sexual behavior as regards HIV, STDs and unplanned pregnancies,” Levine told NBC News. “Therefore, the need to identify young people who sex message seems unnecessary.” In a recent editorial piece, “Sex!ng: A Terrifying Health Risk … or the New Normal for Young Adults?” for the Journal of Adolescent Health, Levine wrote that “If we are to use sex messaging to create relevant health messaging for youth, the messages could focus less on shame and more on mutual consent, communication about sexual desires, and regular testing for HIV and other STDs, especially for sexually active members of high-risk groups.” One thing that is not in question however, is which demographic of people are more likely to be prone to having a lil freaky phone fun. “The results of this study indicate that sex messaging is prevalent among ethnic minority youth,” the researchers said in the study. “ And while the authors acknowledge that more research is needed to understand the context and circumstances of that sex messaging, “the first step in any public health inquiry is to understand the scope and prevalence of a potential health problem. Some data exist on the prevalence of sex messaging among youth in general. However, prevalence data for ethnic minority youth specifically are scarce.” The researchers’ data is based on findings from 1,034 tenth-graders from a “large, urban school district in southeast Texas.” In this new age of technology it’s not only important to talk to your kids about sex, but also “digital sexual activity”. Online sex sites, social networking apps, and unlimited use of smartphones all give young children the ability to do some freaky finger fawking. What do you think makes sexting more prevalent amongst African-American and latin kids? Are we just a more naturally freaky people?? Image via Shutterstock

Porn Star Teacher Stacie Halas Loses Appeal to Get Job Back

Disgraced porn star teacher Stacie Halas, a.k.a. Tiffany Six, has apparently lost her bid to reclaim her job after being fired from her job at a California middle school. Halas had hoped not just to get her science teacher job back, but to set a precedent for people looking to escape an embarrassing personal history. No dice. A three-judge commission put a stop to both, saying firmly and unanimously that Stacie Halas should not be teaching in the classroom. “We were hoping we could show you could overcome your past,” Halas’ lawyer Richard Schwab said. “I think she’s representative of a lot of people.” Despite Schwab’s (true) claim that Halas’ past “does not involve anything illegal or anything that hurts anybody,” Judge Julie Cabos-Owen sided against her. Such a past matters, she ruled, in an age when technology makes porn easy to access and hard to bury , and the Internet will continue to impede her. “Although her pornography career has concluded,” the porn past inhibits her ability to be both an “effective teacher and respected colleague,” Cabos-Owen said. Stacie Halas, 32, was continually deceitful about her nine-month career in adult films before she went to work at the school, the judges also noted. Schwab said Halas “attempted to be honest and forthright, but was embarrassed and humiliated by her past experience in the adult industry.” Halas was fired in April from Haydock Intermediate School in Oxnard after online videos of her in porn were discovered by students and teachers. Student claims that the teacher was moonlighting as a porn star were initially dismissed after school officials said they couldn’t find any images of her. However, they were using the school’s computers, which don’t allow access to porn; downloads of Halas’ sex videos from smartphones outed her.

Spoiler Talk: The Pity of Bilbo And Where Jackson & Co. Chose To End ‘The Hobbit’

Given the behind the scenes false starts that seemed to plague the production of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – lawsuits, studio bankruptcy, a change in directors — it’s perhaps a tad ironic that beginning the story of Lord of the Rings before the story of Lord of the Rings was never a problem. No, for Peter Jackson , Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, the power troika behind the flick, beginning an episodic, rollicking, children’s adventure story cum three-film epic was the easy part. Deciding where to end, however… Spoilers follow. How does one pinpoint a climax for a first film in a trilogy before the whole story is even a third of the way over? With what may be the turning point of J.R.R. Tolkien’s entire massive legendarium, suggested Boyens. “We understood that you had to arrive the characters at an emotional location as opposed to a geographical location. Instead of just getting them to a geographical point on the journey, it was more important for to arrive them at an emotional place so that you didn’t continue to tell the same emotional story,” the Oscar winning scribe told Movieline . “It’s very hard for Bilbo to be that little Hobbit who has to find his courage,” she continued. “I mean, that could go on and on and on and on. [But when] the ring comes to Bilbo and in that moment he chooses not to take Gollum’s life, that has enormous resonance for the entire mythology.” Occurring almost exactly 30 percent of the way through Tolkien’s The Hobbit , the scene comes immediately after Bilbo finds the One Ring and puts it on for the first time in order to escape from the clutches of the treacherous Gollum, who he has just beaten in a Riddle Game. Perched before Gollum in front of an open doorway that promises freedom, Bilbo has a chance to kill the creature but chooses not to. The scene, sometimes referred to by fans of the series as “The Pity of Bilbo,” has consequences for the rest of the series in a literal sense, as it is ultimately Gollum who manages to destroy the Ring by falling with it into the lava at Mount Doom. So resonant is the scene, in fact, that it’s overtly referenced several times in Lord of the Rings . “The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many,” Gandalf tells Frodo in Fellowship of the Ring . “The pity of Bilbo rules the fate of all,” echoed director Peter Jackson. “Bilbo had a chance to kill Gollum. The fact that he didn’t [kill Gollum] has now created the story of Lord of the Rings , for good or for bad.” Perhaps more importantly for Boyens and Company, it represented a kind of ecclesiastical or moral totem, a crossroads from which Bilbo would never be able to return. (Gandalf believes, for example, that Bilbo was able to give up the Ring so easily because he took it in a moment of pity. “Bilbo has been well rewarded,” he tells Frodo. “Be sure that he took so little hurt from the evil, and escaped in the end, because he began his ownership of the Ring so. With pity.”) Using this scene as the climax of the film then necessitated moving other things forward, like when in the story Thorin learns to trust and lean on Bilbo. From the cave scene forward in the film, Bilbo takes agency in his relationship with the dwarves, deciding to actively join them on their quest and helping to save Thorin from the orcs. “Bilbo discovers something in himself and I think that is true courage, knowing when, as Gandalf says, to spare a life,” Boyens insisted. “So we couldn’t just let that moment pass. And I think it would have gotten buried in the great morass of spider fights and other stuff that would have happened if [we didn’t end there and] kept pushing through.” The spiritual ramifications of the scene were so important to the screenwriters that they made a small but profound change in order to underline its moral importance, explained Boyens. In the book, Bilbo simply finds the Ring, as if it was misplaced by Gollum. In the movie, “[Gollum] loses it as he’s murdering someone and Bilbo receives it as he’s saving something,” Boyens explained. “So maybe that act – that unknown act without any knowledge of any greater consequence — is what Professor Tolkien wrote a lot about; [Goodness and grace] must be innate. It must be for its sake an act of charity, an act of kindness. That’s how fate works.” Is this the right place to end The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey , even though it necessitated changing the text to move other things forward? Would you have chosen this spot?
