REVIEW: Low-Key, High-Octane Restrepo Captures War’s Everyday Realities

In early summer 2007, filmmakers Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington settled in with a platoon of 15 soldiers newly arrived in the Korengal Valley of eastern Afghanistan, a Taliban and al-Qaeda stronghold considered one of the most dangerous postings in the war. Restrepo, the movie they made there, is remarkable not because it heightens the drama of the combat experience — one that, face it, doesn’t need any heightening via filmmaking magic — but because it so unassumingly captures the everyday rhythms of these soldiers’ lives. One minute they’re ducking Taliban bullets that come seemingly from nowhere. The next they’re cutting loose at an impromptu nighttime disco party, a short one (apparently dictated by the length of one dance track queued up on an iPod) and one with only four guys total. But the basic image — the sight of young people dancing and horsing around — is so joyous and elemental that it’s nearly devastating: Only then do we get the full measure of what it means that those bullets missed.

Tom Cruise’s Les Grossman Film Staffs Up

I guess we have no choice in this matter. The Les Grossman film that Tom Cruise had been promising is a go, according to a statement released by Paramount today; Ben Stiller will produce, while Scott Pilgrim vs. the World writer Michael Bacall will adapt. I think this makes Tom Cruise our new Mike Myers. Upgrade or downgrade? [ Coming Soon ]

‘Scott Pilgrim’ Director Edgar Wright Breaks Down Exclusive Clip

He reveals that Chris Evans’ look-alikes in the footage are his actual stunt men. By Rick Marshall Michael Cera in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” Photo: Universal During the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” director Edgar Wright introduced an exclusive new clip from his much-anticipated comic book adaptation. And while the footage of Michael Cera’s Scott Pilgrim throwing down with skateboarder-turned-actor Lucas Lee (Chris Evans) was impressive on its own, Wright took some time out to explain the clip a little better to MTV readers — and offer a little behind-the-scenes information about the scene too. “[It’s] a clip of ex number two, who is Lucas Lee, pro skateboarder-turned-action star played by Chris Evans, and he’s making a new film in Toronto,” Wright explained. “Rather unwisely, Scott Pilgrim stumbles across the set and is about to get his ass handed to him.” As Wright said, it’s only the second of seven battles Scott Pilgrim must wage against the evil ex-lovers of his girlfriend, Ramona Flowers. But when Scott ends up on the wrong side of a beating in the clip, it isn’t delivered by Evans’ character. As you see in the clip (if you haven’t watched it, do it now!), Lucas Lee’s stunt team gets in on the action, forcing Scott to fight off not one, but a whole crew of Lucas look-alikes. According to Wright, the stunt team also happens to be a real group of stunt actors who double for Evans. “They are his stunt guys,” Wright told MTV News. “And the joke is that, as they fan out, they look less and less like Chris Evans. So the main one looks very much like Chris Evans, two and three are pretty good, [but] five, six and seven, not so good.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

Michael Cera faces off against Chris Evans in the scene, which premiered during the MTV Movie Awards pre-show. By Todd Gilchrist Michael Cera in “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” Photo: Universal Studios Squaring off against seven evil exes is no small task, even if it’s in the service of securing your place next to the girl of your dreams. But there’s a reason Michael Cera’s new film is called “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” — namely, that the sum total of his opposition adds up to more or less the equivalent of an armada of adversaries and, more than likely, a world of hurt. And one of the fiercest foes Cera’s Scott Pilgrim scuffles with is Lucas Lee, whose punches are packed with the panache of actor Chris Evans, who will soon be seen donning Captain America’s red, white and blue cowl. Audiences around the world just saw the premiere of an exclusive clip from Scott Pilgrim during the MTV Movie Awards pre-show, but check it out again right here. Following an introduction by director Edgar Wright, who brings the breakneck cinematography and brilliant sense of humor from “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz” to the comic book adaptation, the clip begins with poor Scott being introduced — via a detour to the asphalt — to his beloved Ramona Flowers’ (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) ex-boyfriend Lucas (Evans). Lucas decks him with one blow, pausing momentarily afterward for a studio flunky to polish his clenched fist, but Scott is surprisingly resilient; getting back to his feet, he makes a beeline to let Lucas know he’s not yet finished with him. Instead of standing up to Lucas, however, Scott finds himself face to face with one of Lucas’ stunt doubles, one of the guys he lets act in wide shots “when [he] feels like betting blazed in his Winnie,” as Lucas puts it. The double summarily also lays Scott out, and as the love-struck pugilist stands up again, Lucas reveals that he doesn’t just have one stuntman, but several. A spectacular battle erupts as skateboards and swinging punches fly through the air, with Scott more than holding his own until he gets a particularly powerful shot to the face. Of course, you’ll have to see if Scott survives when the movie arrives in theaters August 13. Lady Gaga’s Summer Jam Victory: Readers React

‘I love most of the songs that were nominated, but ‘Alejandro’ is my favorite,’ one fan wrote. By Kyle Anderson Lady Gaga Photo: Interscope Records On Tuesday, Lady Gaga not only chatted with Larry King and unveiled the preview for her latest envelope-pushing video , but she also won yet another accolade. “Alejandro,” the latest single from Gaga’s The Fame Monster, took home the top prize in the MTV News Summer Jam 2010 poll , beating out strong contenders like Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” and Usher’s chart-topping “OMG.” And while there were a handful of write-in votes and protests, most readers were enthusiastic about the crowning of the official song of summer. “I knew she’d win,” reader Kayla posted in the comments section. “I love most of the songs that were nominated, but Lady Gaga’s ‘Alejandro’ is my favorite.” Shane said he was happily surprised at the success of Gaga’s latest single. ” ‘Alejandro’ is one of Gaga’s best songs. I was kind of disappointed when she chose it as a single because it doesn’t sound like something that mainstream American idiots can absorb. But how shocked was I!” Reader Brandon saw the coronation of “Alejandro” as an official summer jam as the next logical step in Gaga’s growing legacy. ” ‘Alejandro’ is truly a summer song. The summer song of 2010 needs to be pop,” he wrote. “Pop is what has dominated the charts for the past year. And who has been at the top of the charts for the past two years? Lady Gaga, of course.” Still, there were a handful of people who thought that despite the growing popularity of “Alejandro,” it didn’t have the right kind of feel to be a summer song. “I don’t see how this is a summer jam,” wrote jarthon. ” I hear ‘Alejandro’ and I feel depressed. The beat is just too slow to be good for the summer.” In addition to her devoted fans, Gaga herself expressed excitement over the ascension of “Alejandro.” “MTV voted ALEJANDRO Song of the Summer little monsters!” she wrote on her Twitter page . A few minutes later, she corrected herself. “So apparently the WIN: ALEJANDRO AS SUMMMER SONG 2010 was due to my rabid and luminous fans, not MTV, although they held the wonderful contest,” she wrote .
