Katy Perry Introduced “Misogynoir” To White America After Leslie Jones’ Nudes Leak Many celebs have voiced their support for comedian Leslie Jones following her nude leak by racist hackers . Singer Katy Petty tweeted about the situation and “introduced” a new term to mainstream America apparently reports Fish Wrapper : Okay, first of all, the talented and wonderful Leslie Jones was the target of a vicious attack (the FBI is investigating). Everybody (well, not white supremacists or the anti-feminist crowd) was tweeting support to her, from politicians to fellow stars to countless fans. Katy Perry was among them. So, first of all, if you’re not familiar and think that maybe “misogynoir” is either that dressing you get with salads at sushi places or perhaps a film genre, the word refers specifically to the particularly vile combination of misogyny and racism directed at black women. Like, racism is bad, sexism is bad, and the two intersect nightmarishly and impact black women in ways foreign to both black men and white women. Anyway, Katy Perry should get credit for tweeting a decent thing here, but that’s it. She would probably agree, even. There are countless people who’ve been using this term for ages, and we should not give credit to a white woman for using it publicly as if she’d just returned from a 19th Century expedition and was returning to Whiteville with a foreign cultural artifact. We’re reminded of when folks try to give white people credit for “discovering” sushi, or acai, or whatever. In those cases, it’s usually hipsters and not pop singers, but you get the same uneasy feeling that credit isn’t being given where credit is due. Catholic Hospital Refuses To Admit Woman Bleeding From Dislodged IUD A Chicago woman was turned away at a Catholic hospital after her IUD dislodged because the church opposes birth control reports ReWire News: Melanie Jones arrived for her doctor’s appointment bleeding and in pain. Jones, 28, who lives in the Chicago area, had slipped in her bathroom, and suspected the fall had dislodged her copper intrauterine device (IUD). Her doctor confirmed the IUD was dislodged and had to be removed. But the doctor said she would be unable to remove the IUD, citing Catholic restrictions followed by Mercy Hospital and Medical Center and providers within its system. “I think my first feeling was shock,” Jones told Rewire in an interview. “I thought that eventually they were going to recognize that my health was the top priority.” The doctor left Jones to confer with colleagues, before returning to confirm that her “hands [were] tied,” according to two complaints filed by the ACLU of Illinois. Not only could she not help her, the doctor said, but no one in Jones’ health insurance network could remove the IUD, because all of them followed similar restrictions. Mercy, like many Catholic providers, follows directives issued by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops that restrict access to an array of services, including abortion care, tubal ligations, and contraception. The number of acute care hospitals that are Catholic owned or affiliated has grown by 22 percent over the past 15 years, according to MergerWatch, with one in every six acute care hospital beds now in a Catholic owned or affiliated facility. LA Cop Who Beat Girlfriend And Set Her Hair On Fire Sentenced To Six Months In Jail An ex Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was sentenced to one year in jail this week for brutally beating his girlfriend and setting her hair on fire according to ABC 7 News : The Orange County District Attorney wanted Alejandro Flores to serve his time in state prison, but the judge overruled the request, sparking outrage from the victim. While the formal sentence was for one year, Flores is expected to spend only six months in jail under state sentencing guidelines. The 34-year-old stood emotionless as he listened to his son’s mother speak about the violence. “He pushed me against the stove yelling, ‘Is this what you want?’ At that point, he turned on the gas burner, setting the my hair on fire,” said the victim, who did not want to be identified. As she read her victim-impact statement, she urged the judge to issue a stiffer sentence. “Alejandro chose a career in law enforcement to protect and serve. Apparently, that doesn’t cross to his personal life and the sentence confirms it,” she told the courtroom. The victim said there had been violence before, all of which occurred in front of their young son. Flores pleaded guilty to nine felony counts, including using a gun to threaten his then girlfriend not to leave after the violence. The victim said her close encounter with death that day gave her strength to leave and report abuse. WTF?!?!
