First Look at Frank Miller’s Xerxes Probably Won’t Thrill Iran

Three years ago, the screen adaptation of Frank Miller’s brutal graphic novel 300 became a global smash. Or it was a smash everywhere but Iran, which somehow objected to the depiction of an androgynous, bedazzled Persian king Xerxes laying cruel waste to the scrappy, ab-happy Spartans. The ethnic implications seemed the least of moviegoers’ concerns — not to mention Miller’s own, which have now returned to the mega-pierced monarch for the prequel Xerxes . The author still has a ways to go on the project, but I think we all know a movie adaptation is inevitable. As such, a first look at Xerxes — who makes Mr. T look like the Dalai Lama — clues us in to what will be pissing Iran off in the next two to three years.

Twilight Saga, Robert Pattinson Take Home National Movie Awards

It’s safe to say the National Movie Awards, which took place in London last night, are not the Oscars. Need proof? New Moon took home the Best Fantasy Movie, while Eclipse actually garnered a victory despite the fact that it won’t be released for a month. It won Most Anticipated Movie. Star Robert Pattinson was also honored, receiving the trophy for Best Male Performance. Unable to attend, due to work on Water for Elephants, he recorded the following message for fans: Thanking Fans Meanwhile, Tom Cruise ended the show by winning the Screen Icon award. Gwyneth Paltrow presented it to him and said: “For over two decades he has shown a bold eagerness to take risks, engaging and enthralling audiences.” He’s also jumped on a lot of couches and may have inducted Katie Holmes into a cult. But, hey, how cool was the actor in Jerry Maguire ?!? Below, we’ve posted a number of photos from the event, highlighted by TomKat looking its cutest/creepiest: [Photos: Splash News]

Laura Harring on the Mulholland Drive Follow-Up: ‘Please Don’t Get Me in Trouble!’

Laura Harring can’t help it: Mystery just follows her wherever she goes. It’s what made her perfect for the alluring amnesiac in David Lynch’s masterpiece Mulholland Drive , and the ideal candidate to play Chuck Bass’s engimatic mother this season on Gossip Girl . Even in her real life, Harring can get people speculating with little more than a tossed-off comment, as she did when she hinted recently that there might be more Mulholland left in her future. As Harring prepared for her Screen Actors Guild Conversation Forum tonight in Los Angeles, Movieline spoke to the actress to see what she meant about a return to the world of David Lynch, and how her own ties to royalty helped prepare her for her plunge into Gossip Girl .

EXCLUSIVE: Doug Liman on Fair Game: ‘It’s a Really Great Movie’

Movieline on Tuesday dropped by a benefit in Tribeca for Scenarios USA , a non-profit that promotes writing and filmmaking among under-served teens. A handful of the kids wind up working with professional directors (including Michael Apted, Tamara Jenkins, Griffin Dunne and others) to bring their stories to the screen. And just as dinner was getting underway, in walked Doug Liman, who sits on Scenarios’ board and had collaborated on the program’s first short film — He Said, She Said — in 1999. But just as important for him at the moment: He’s preparing to send one of Cannes’ most anticipated films — the Valerie Plame thriller Fair Game — to the festival, where it will screen in competition. Liman took a moment to talk it over with Movieline.
