James Franco Sounds Excited About Rise of the Planet of the Apes

It seems Oscar producers weren’t the only people James Franco threw under the bus in his new Playboy interview. “They haven’t shown me the movie yet, so I don’t know what the result is,” Franco said about Rise of the Planet of the Apes . “I did reshoots, and it sounds to me the final movie will be different from the screenplay, which had a lot of character development. The movie seems to be more action now. I went and did my job, and I’m supposed to be a scientist. I feel pretty confident that I did that.” [ Playboy ]

Harry Potter’s Gellert Grindelwald and Ginny Weasley Get Engaged

Adorable Harry Potter costars Jamie Campbell Bower and Bonnie Wright — who were born in 1988 and 1991, respectively — are engaged . That’s cute and unsettling. Children! They’re children! How many Toys R Us Geoffrey dollars will this cost them? Will they take their learner’s permits to town hall? Should they dance to their grandparents’ wedding song, Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me” (featuring Rik Rok)? I’m confounded! Congrats, though! [ GossipCop ]

5 Albums of the Past Decade That Could Be Adapted Into Movies

American Idiot , the Green Day album that birthed a Broadway musical, is nearing a move to the big screen after at least one aborted attempt. Milk scribe Dustin Lance Black is in talks to write the screenplay, and now I’m in talks with myself to realize the potential in adapting albums as films. It’s a mystifying and interesting thought; that rumored Candy Land movie is basically Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream anyway, right? Here are five more that could make for intriguing cineplex draws.

‘X-Men Origins: Deadpool’ Finds Its Director: Tim Miller

This will be the visual-effects expert’s full-length directing debut. By Kara Warner Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” Photo: Marvel / Fox The highly anticipated (if slightly delayed and problem-plagued) “Deadpool” movie has officially been assigned a director, VFX expert Tim Miller. According to Deadline , 20th Century Fox selected Miller to helm the pic due to his extensive background in visual effects. (Miller worked on “X-Men,” “X2,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Night at the Museum”). “X-Men Origins: Deadpool” will be Miller’s first time directing a full-length feature film. Although the casting announcements have not yet been made, Ryan Reynolds, who portrayed the mouthy mercenary in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” is expected to star. He recently told MTV News that he hopes the movie gets into production soon. “Worry not,” Reynolds told MTV News. “I want it to happen. I just feel like when it does happen, it has to be done the exact right way. I’ve been a part of it for way, way too long, and it has to be done extremely well. “There’s a lot I could say about it right now, but there are moving parts that I really want to see to fruition and I want to see them happen, so I don’t want to get into and put the cart before the horse,” he added. “So we’ll see.” However, Reynolds was quick to indicate that the delays aren’t due to any problems with the script. In fact, the screenplay by “Zombieland” writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick is, well, perfect. “The script is exactly where I want it to be,” he said. “[The script is], tonally speaking, perfect.” Since Reynolds has said in the past that he’d only do “Deadpool” or zombie cop movie “R.I.P.D.,” this announcement and forward movement by Fox — and the fact that Reynolds’ co-star just dropped out of “R.I.P.D.” — might help nudge the “Green Lantern” star toward officially signing on for “Deadpool.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . James Franco, Asked About Gay Roles, Says ‘Maybe I’m Just Gay’

‘There are lots of reasons to be interested in gay characters than wanting myself to have sex with guys,’ actor says. By Gil Kaufman James Franco Photo: Getty Images They’re the two questions actor James Franco hears almost every time he sits down for an interview: “Are you gay?” and “are you stoned?” The multi-hyphenate, perpetually heavy-lidded actor (who, for the record, denies that he’s a smoker) has aroused curiosity about his sexuality by playing a number of high-profile gay parts in movies such as “Milk,” “Howl” and his upcoming “The Broken Tower.” Franco, who has been in a relationship with actress Ahna O’Reilly for more than five years, has avoided the definitive denial/confirmation that other high-profile celebrities have made in the past when questioned about their sexual preferences. In a recent Entertainment Weekly cover story, though, he tackled the issue head-on and provided, well, clarity of a sort. “It’s funny because the way that kind of stuff is talked about on blogs is so black-and-white,” Franco said. “It’s all cut-and-dry identity politics. ‘Is he straight or is he gay?’ Or, ‘This is your third gay movie — come out already!’ And all based on gay or straight, based on the idea that your object of affection decides your sexuality.” The “127 Hours” star has spurred further talk about his bedroom politics with news that he’s planning to write the screenplay and direct a biopic about gay “Rebel Without a Cause” actor Sal Mineo. “There are lots of other reasons to be interested in gay characters than wanting myself to go out and have sex with guys,” he said about why he chooses the roles he does and why gay parts are often much meatier than other ones he’s offered. “I mean, I’ve played a gay man who’s living in the ’60s and ’70s, a gay man who we depicted in the ’50s, and one being in the ’20s. And those were all periods when to be gay, at least being gay in public, was much more difficult. Part of what I’m interested in is how these people who were living anti-normative lifestyles contended with opposition.” But, ever the provocateur, the sometime “General Hospital” guest star, painter, author and Ph.D. student ended the interview with another explanation for why he might be choosing all these homosexual roles. “You know what, maybe I’m just gay.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Britney Spears Will Not Appear on Glee

The upcoming Britney Spears Glee tribute episode may have been the pop star’s management’s own idea, but the singer herself will not be appearing in it. “Britney’s not in it,” Jane Lynch told reporters today at her wax figure unveiling at Madame Tussaud’s in Hollywood, Calif. “It’s a tribute to her music.” Even though Spears herself will be absent from the episode, Lynch promises that tales from entertainer’s real life will be tied into the show’s storyline. One of our all-time favorite tales, in fact. “It’s kind of [about] how Matt [Morrison]‘s character Mr. Schuster doesn’t see any value in her and the kids really do,” she says. “And at the end [of the episode], he comes around and he likes [her music] so much, he shaves his head.” Great moments in celebrity gossip – and soon, Glee . Who would have guessed Britney shaving her head would one day inspire an episode of a Fox comedy about a glee club. You can’t make this stuff up. On the subjects of Spears and Glee , her ex Justin Timberlake has been rumored to appear on the series also … and also isn’t likely to actually do so. “I love him,” the show’s co-creator Ryan Murphy, who also wrote the screenplay for Eat, Pray, Love , told reporters last week at TCA. “But I think somebody just said, ‘Do you want him?’ And I think Lea [Michele] said, ‘He’s my favorite.’” “Suddenly, he was on the show.” Too bad he won’t be in person … but there’s always room for some *NSync adaptions, are we right? Actually no, let’s say bye, bye bye to that idea.
