Tony Blair Accused of Ripping Off The Queen

The Queen screenwriter Peter Morgan has accused former British prime minister Tony Blair of plagiarizing his script. In his memoirs, Blair’s account of what was said when he went to kiss hands with the Queen Elizabeth II in 1997 is apparently very similar to the dialogue that Morgan wrote. Morgan surmises that either he guessed exactly right in the script (unlikely), that Blair decided he liked Morgan’s lines enough to use them, or that the former prime minister simply confused the film with the actual events. Blair claims to have never seen the film. Alternate guess: Blair’s ghost writer uncovered a vast conspiracy between the lines of what was actually said and used Morgan’s dialogue to cover himself. Tim Burton Reuniting With ‘Ed Wood’ Writers For ‘Addams Family’

Team is also developing ‘Big Eyes,’ based on artist Margaret Keane and her portraits of big-eyed children. By Adam Rosenberg Tim Burton Photo: Tony Barson/ WireImage One of filmmaker Tim Burton’s strongest efforts of the past 30 years is, ironically, “Ed Wood,” a biopic charting the life of the famed director of 1959’s “Plan 9 From Outer Space,” a work widely regarded as the worst film of all time. It’s great then to see that Burton is reuniting with the writing team behind the 1994 release. Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski will join Burton in developing a script for the planned stop-motion adaptation of Charles Addams’ famed comic strip, “The Addams Family,” Deadline reports . Burton will also produce with Chris Meledandri for Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures. The same article reveals that Burton will also produce the writing duo’s fact-based drama “Big Eyes,” which is “based on artist Margaret Keane’s struggle to get credit for the line of paintings of big-eyed children that became wildly popular in the ’60s.” Alexander and Karaszewski wrote the script with the intent of directing themselves. The “Addams Family” news comes several months after reports surfaced that Burton would direct a 3-D stop-motion adaptation of the famed comic strip. In a statement made to MTV News at the time, Burton’s reps stated, “There is no truth to the story. Tim has not lined up any of his upcoming projects.” It was clear even then that Burton could settle on “Addams Family” next. He still could direct, too. Deadline reports that he will “direct a film that is one of the plum projects on Meledandri’s slate for Illumination,” which of course now includes “Addams Family.” “Big Eyes” came up while Burton was in discussions with Alexander and Karaszewski about the comic strip adaptation. “It turns out he’s a big fan of Margaret and has commissioned artwork from her,” Alexander told Deadline. It doesn’t hurt that the actual story is a remarkable truth-is-stranger-than-fiction tale. Walter Keane, Margaret’s husband, became a celebrity in the 1950s, riding a wave of success from his mass-produced prints of big-eyed children. Though the images bore his signature, Margaret was the one with an aptitude for making art. When the two eventually divorced and Margaret tried to make it known that she was the artist, Walter sued. The case that followed culminated in a dramatic showdown in which the judge ordered that two easels be set up in the courtroom, staging what essentially amounted to a paint-off. No release window is listed for either project, though IMDb’s listing for “Big Eyes” is labeled 2011. With the script already written, a budget that is reportedly “in the teens” and Burton producing, it is certainly possible that the Keane pic will be ready for next year. ‘Knight And Day’: Run Time, By Kurt Loder

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in an over-amped but underpowered spy tale. Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in “Knight and Day” Photo: Twentieth Century Fox and Regency Enterprises Anyone who’s ever been trapped on a plane flight from Hell — squashed by sprawling seatmates, battered by passing backpacks, besieged by squalling brats — will appreciate the elegant simplicity of Tom Cruise’s solution to similar problems: He kills everybody. Literally. But then they were trying to kill him. Even the pilots. Which is why they’re dead, too. Emerging from the loo, Cameron Diaz is surprised to find that she and Tom are now alone, unless you count corpses as company. And she’s worried — the plane is diving fast. Tom will handle that. (“No need to panic.”) But then what? The answer to that question has been clear in every espionage-romance dating back at least to Hitchcock’s “The 39 Steps.” The answer is: Run! If only “Knight and Day” gave these two much else to do. Playing rogue CIA agent Roy Miller, Cruise deploys his smooth charm to ravishing effect — we’re reminded again of what a supple comic actor he can be. And as innocent bystander June Havens, Diaz, with her eager eyes and engulfing grin, is adorable throughout. But the script, by first-time screenwriter Patrick O’Neill, doesn’t have enough of the breezy wit that makes a classic spy-chase movie like “North by Northwest” so pleasurable. There are some good lines. (Noting that trouble-magnet Roy has been wounded at one point, June deadpans, “You have to go to the hospital. Prison, maybe.”) But director James Mangold (“Walk the Line”) is mostly intent on goosing the action along from one nifty set of stunts to the next. The stunts are pretty great — especially a heavy-damage highway chase (which seems fresher than usual here) and a wild escape through a Spanish bull-run stampede. But we miss the stylish downtime that would allow us to catch our breath. And we miss the romance. Cruise and Diaz have real chemistry, but the script doesn’t enable them to do much with it. (Although there is a cute moment when she wakes up in a bikini she wasn’t wearing when she passed out. Too bad this sexy tease doesn’t build into anything interesting.) In the traditional way, the story is a flimsy thing; and in the traditional way, that doesn’t matter. Roy is being chased by a team of his former CIA colleagues led by an inscrutable character named Fitzgerald (Peter Sarsgaard). Fitzgerald is convinced that Roy has lost his mind and absconded with an ultra-powerful device called the Zephyr. (“The biggest thing since the sun,” Roy says.) The determined spooks chase Roy and June — who has fallen into this mess by sheerest accident — from Boston to the Azores (where Roy maintains a private island) to Austria (look out for the assassin!) to the Spanish villa where an international arms dealer named Antonio (Jordi Moll

‘The Avengers’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Can’t wait until May 2012? Here’s all we know about the superhero supergroup. By Eric Ditzian Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle in “Iron Man 2” Photo: Paramount Pictures With the mega-opening of “Iron Man 2” behind us and the release of “Thor” and “The First Avenger: Captain America” coming down the line in 2011, it’s time to turn our attention to “The Avengers,” Marvel’s planned big-screen adaptation of their team of iconic superheroes. Debuting in the early ’60s, the comic book’s members have at one time or another included Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk and others. “Avengers” isn’t set for a theatrical release until May 4, 2012. But details about the project are quickly coming together. Here is MTV News’ cheat sheet on the movie: everything you need to know about “The Avengers.” “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk” Get Things Started At the end of 2008’s “Iron Man,” Samuel L. Jackson pops up as Nick Fury , the eye-patched head of the superhero-focused spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D. who’s putting together the Avengers. Not only was it an awesome and unexpected cameo, but it served as notice to fans that Marvel was dead set on weaving together the cinematic universes of their classic superheroes. Little more than a month later, Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark — a.k.a. Iron Man — appeared briefly in “The Incredible Hulk,” talking about getting a team together. Again, it was a satisfying cameo and further proof that “Avengers” was most definitely Marvel’s long-term — and long-planned — goal. Further along in ’08, “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America” and “Avengers” got release dates . While all except “IM2” would end up being pushed back (“Avengers” was originally slated for summer 2011), they were all at least officially on Marvel’s docket. By early ’09, the official release dates for all the films were in place . The Team Comes Together In fall 2008, the cast and crew began to fall into place . Downey and Don Cheadle (as War Machine) signed on to reprise their “Iron Man” roles in “Avengers,” and “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau shifted into an executive-producer role. Zak Penn (“X-Men: The Last Stand”) was recruited to pen the script and delivered a first draft in March. Meanwhile, Edward Norton, who played Hulk in the ’08 film, wouldn’t commit to reprising his role, even though Hulk is set to appear in the film . Scarlett Johansson, who played Black Widow in “Iron Man 2,” hinted at a juicy role for her character in “Avengers.” Chris Hemsworth was cast as Thor both for his own movie and for “Avengers,” while after a lengthy search, Chris Evans was signed as Captain America for his titular flick and “Avengers.” Last month, Joss Whedon nabbed the coveted director job and also got a chance to rewrite the script. The Remaining ‘Avenger’ Questions While the core team is in place, oodles of questions remain. Which other heroes and villains will pop up in “Avengers”? How about Loki (to be played by Tom Hiddleston in “Thor”) or Red Skull (to be played by Hugo Weaving in “Captain America”)? What other characters will enter the “Avengers” universe, like Ant-Man, Wasp, Black Panther and Vision? And then there’s the question of who will be the de facto leader of the Avengers. History points to Captain America, but nothing is set in stone. “I don’t know if they’re going to make him the boss,” Evans told MTV News in April. Joked Downey : “I’ll clown all of them. I’ll just clown those fools.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Avengers.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Audrina Patridge Hasn’t Ruled Out Nude Scenes

Hills star Audrina Patridge says she has not ruled out doing nude scenes in a movie. The 24-year-old actress appeared in movie Sorority Row last year and said she wouldn’t mind posing nude. “If I was passionate about the script and the scene was there in order to make the character believable then I would do it. If it was just a flash of booty here and a bit of boob there then fine, but anything too intense and I probably wouldn’t do it.” That is all code for “big paycheck.”
