Original Idol Producer Nigel Lythgoe: ‘I Would Replace the Entire Judging Panel’

As the co-creator of Pop Idol and American Idol , Nigel Lythgoe is never short on opinions, and as a panelist on his self-created show So You Think You Can Dance , Lythgoe’s deadpan candor is his trademark. Still, the 60-year-old former dancer reached a new level of unfiltered commentary when he was asked to open up about Idol ‘s current season, laying into Simon Cowell, Ryan Seacrest, and most of all, Ellen DeGeneres.

Joss Stone And Jeff Beck Get Steamy On ‘Idol Gives Back’

British duo put a bluesy twist on ‘I Put a Spell on You’ for the fundraising effort. By James Montgomery Joss Stone (file) Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images Wednesday night’s (April 21) “Idol Gives Back” event featured performances by everyone from the Black Eyed Peas to Annie Lennox, but it was a pair of Brits — and a swampy, often-overlooked American tune that pre-dates most rock and roll — that ended up being one of the night’s most memorable moments. Singer Joss Stone and legendary guitarist Jeff Beck turned in a simmering, smoky take on Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ 1956 stomper “I Put a Spell on You” — a song that has been covered by a lengthy list of artists, including Nina Simone and Shane McGowan — which managed to take the soulful, primal urges of the original (and most of the covers) and infuse them with both blues and R&B. Backed by the Jubilation Choir, and aided by a four-piece band, Stone and Beck let the song build to a boil, with the 23-year-old Stone starting out sparse, then gradually adding more gravel and gut to her voice, while Beck added flecks of bluesy guitar that eventually erupted into a fret-bending, note-melding solo. The tune grew and grew, with Stone — dressed in a silver, floor-length gown — vamping across the stage, bending low to draw the notes out of her lungs, while the choir added ominous backup, and Beck, the old pro playing it cool, guiding the song with his reserved, almost flirtatious playing. Eventually, when things got too hot, Beck, the band and the choir all fell away, leaving only Stone to take the song home. And with one great, breathy bellow, she did just that, going low once again, letting the grit come to the forefront. And as she wailed, Beck brought the band back in to wrap it all up. And as the audience cheered, the duo embraced in the middle of the stage. What did you think of Joss and Jeff’s duet? Let us know in the comments below! Tim Urban Sent Packing During ‘Idol Gives Back’

Elimination came after a night of all-star performances and fundraising pleas. By Gil Kaufman Tim Urban on “American Idol” (file) Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Wednesday night’s (April 21) “American Idol” was focused on “Idol Gives Back,” so the two-hour-plus show devoted most of the airtime to raising funds for children’s charities with a series of celebrity pleas and performances from Mary J. Blige , Carrie Underwood, Elton John, the Black Eyed Peas and several others. But there was an elimination to take care of, and after visiting the bottom three on three earlier occasions, the sand finally ran out of the hourglass for Texas singer Tim Urban. A Look Back At Tim Urban’s ‘Idol’ Journey With help from comedian George Lopez, the first step toward cutting the group down to six came with a role reversal, as Lopez judged the judges for a change. He told Randy Jackson to come up with something to say besides “pitchy” and encouraged Kara DioGuardi to formulate her own thoughts, giving both of them a pass and declaring them safe. Addressing his pal Ellen DeGeneres, whom he faulted for loving too much, and Simon Cowell, whose size-small T-shirts and flirtation with Ryan Seacrest he mocked, Lopez gave Ellen the pass but said Cowell had to return to England immediately. Because of the Icelandic volcano, though, he said Cowell could hang out. That made way for Ryan Seacrest to call Casey James and Crystal Bowersox center stage, where he sent James to the bottom three for the first time this season after a lackluster Fleetwood Mac cover. MamaSox was sent back to safety after her emotional performance on Tuesday night. Next up were Lee Dewyze and Aaron Kelly, with the high-schooler taking a seat next to James in the bottom three after a lukewarm response from the judges for his cover of R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly.” Siobhan Magnus, Michael Lynche and Urban were the last group to face Seacrest, with Urban ending up in the bottom three yet again after America agreed with Ellen that his rendition of the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Better Days” just wasn’t their cup of soup. With the show running more than 20 minutes over, the elimination was finally due, as Seacrest sent Kelly to safety yet again, followed by James. Calling Tim the “comeback kid,” Seacrest stood next to the always-smiling mop-topped singer. As he watched his goodbye segment, Urban was surrounded by the final six, though he did not get a chance to sing one more time, likely because of the show running so far over. Next week’s mentor will be country icon Shania Twain, and the remaining six-pack will choose from her songs during Tuesday night’s performance show. What did you think of Tim Urban’s elimination? Simon Cowell Says It Won’t Be Hard To Leave ‘American Idol’

Ryan Seacrest and judges visit ‘Larry King Live’ to promote ‘Idol Gives Back.’ By Gil Kaufman Simon Cowell Photo: Getty Images Simon Cowell has not publicly talked very much about his feelings on leaving “American Idol” at the end of the current season. But on Monday night’s “Larry King Live,” where the judges and Ryan Seacrest were promoting this week’s “Idol” season full of more on-screen tension than ever before, Cowell said that most of the testy back-and-forth between himself and Seacrest is a put on and that they are friendly in real life. “No, we get on fine,” he said. “It’s right that it’s sport.” Ellen DeGeneres also denied any real tension between the men, saying they were more like battling siblings. “They really are like brothers,” she said. “I think that Ryan likes to see what he can do to push Simon’s buttons. And Simon likes to see what he can do to push Ryan’s buttons. And they do it to each other. That’s just the way they play.” Asked how her first season was going, DeGeneres said she was having fun, but that the gig has been harder than she expected. “It’s really hard,” she said. “It’s easy to sit at home and have opinions, but when those kids are waiting for you to tell them how they sounded and — and, you know, sometimes I hear myself go, ‘I liked it,’ and then Simon is going, ‘No, you didn’t,’ you know.” Seacrest confirmed that he’d just signed a new contract that will keep him on the show for two more seasons, while DeGeneres said she’s got a five-year deal and both Jackson and DioGuardi have at least two more years on their current contracts. Earlier in the show, Seacrest told King that “Idol Gives Back” has raised more than $140 million to date for different child-related and anti-malaria charities, and all the judges discussed their travels to visit various organizations for Wednesday night’s two-hour fundraiser/elimination show. After taking a year off due to the financial crisis, the third edition of the all-star show will feature Justin Bieber, Elton John, Alicia Keys, Carrie Underwood and the Black Eyed Peas. Crystal Bowersox Almost Quit Idol

Can you imagine an American Idol season even weaker than the current one? You would have had just that, if it weren’t for your guardian angel Ryan Seacrest. TMZ reports that dreadlocked Idol frontrunner Crystal Bowersox was thisclose to quitting the competition two weeks ago, until Seacrest convinced her to stick in it so that she could buy her mother a house someday. Meanwhile, a blithe Simon Cowell was like, “Eh, do what you want .” [ TMZ ]

‘American Idol’ Host Ryan Seacrest Explains Recent Quirky Behavior

‘I was in a good mood!’ Seacrest says of his antics on this week’s show. By Gil Kaufman Ryan Seacrest Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images It’s been hard not to notice that Ryan Seacrest has been acting a bit strangely on “American Idol” this season. From his aggressive grilling of lead judge Simon Cowell to his new penchant for making up pet nicknames for contestants and judges (“SiCo”?), the normally genial Seacrest has raised some eyebrows this year with quirky behavior. This week’s shows brought those quirks into sharp focus via some wild air-guitar playing; an out-of-the-blue slam of season-one co-host Brian Dunkleman; a strange, self-deprecating on-air chat with his mother and the man-on-man slow dance during Tim Urban’s performance. So, what’s up with Ryan? The Los Angeles Times cornered the multitasking radio/TV personality and reality-show producer to ask him about the incidents, his recent exceedingly high energy on the show and how he’s feeling about Simon Cowell’s impending departure. Asked about the man dance with someone he ID’d as season-eight “Idol” finalist roughneck Michael Sarver (even though it was clearly not Sarver), Seacrest said he was just having some fun. “I was enjoying it,” he said. “We’ve done this show for nine years. When they take me out into the audience, sometimes the energy out there takes me to a different place. I looked at the people and I was just having fun Tuesday night. That guy looked like the most inappropriate person to dance with, so I figured, ‘Let’s pick him up and just dance with him for a second.’ ” Because he’s shuttled all around the studio while introducing the contestants, Seacrest said that sometimes he gets trapped in a location and he tries to make the most of it. “I can’t actually get out of the location to get back to the side of the stage,” he said. “So sometimes I’ll do something like that to get past it. But that night, I was just enjoying it and having a good time. My mom was there in the audience, I was in a good mood!” Eagle eyed “Idol” watcher MJ Santilli, who runs MJsBigBlog.com , told MTV News that Seacrest’s behavior has concerned her and been a distraction to the show. “Ryan’s behavior is disturbing me,” she said. “I think he may be taking a note from the producers to spice things up a little too far. Edginess is one thing, but Ryan has stepped over the line to insanity. Ryan has always played the sane and sober lynchpin of the show. And while he could be juvenile, he was never mean spirited or crazy. I want the old Ryan back.” The Times brought up the fact that some contestants said Seacrest seemed tired during dress rehearsal, but then seemed to get his second wind on-air Tuesday night, when he opened the show with a double-entendre-heavy interview with mentor Adam Lambert. The host said the unscripted moments are just his way of playfully amping up the proceedings for the live show at the end of one of his typically long, exhausting days of doing a morning radio show and an afternoon/evening “Idol” taping. “I had fun during the dress rehearsal too,” he explained. “It’s one of those things where the contestants change every year, and we’re here every year, and every now and then, you throw in an unconventional intro or outro just to make it different. Some people might think it’s funny, other people might not. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. It’s live and you’re at bat, and you’re just swinging as many times as you can. … But there is no script. The conversation with Adam Lambert? Unscripted. I rehearse only the camera blockings so I know which cameras we’re going to use, but we certainly don’t rehearse any of the antics or any of the craziness that goes on.” He also chalked the Dunkle-slam up to some unscripted, spontaneous fun. There were some other explanations offered by Entertainment Weekly about Seacrest’s antics that could be summed up in one word: caffeine. In an interview after the show, Urban said that the impromptu dance during his performance threw him off when he heard people laughing about it. “It was a little weird, because people laughed at [Ryan] dancing in the middle of the song, so I had to zone it out,” Urban said. “I could kind of catch it in the corner of my eye that he was dancing. I just tried not to think about it.” Then again, apparently Seacrest danced during rehearsal as well, so perhaps Urban shouldn’t have been so surprised. “What he just did on [the live show] was nothing,” Urban said. “Dress rehearsal was nuts. We were in the back going, ‘All right?’ We did not know what was happening.” That prompted Crystal Bowersox to chime in about rehearsals as well, saying, “We were worried about Ryan a little … He was kooky, in a sweet Ryan kind of way.” Before her ouster, teen Katie Stevens got to the bottom of the situation. “I asked him, after dress rehearsal, ‘Ryan, what is up with you?’ ” Stevens said. “And he goes, ‘You know, I’m really, really tired right now, so I’m trying to fool myself into thinking that I’m awake.’ [He was] over-caffeinated.” With his increased presence around the judges’ table, where he has clashed with Cowell on occasion and pressed the rest of the panel for explanations of their critiques more than in the past, the Times wondered if Seacrest was interested in changing jobs. “I do not want to be a judge,” he answered unequivocally. “I actually like being the master of ceremonies. I like being the host. I like being on the side of the contestants. I like getting to know the contestants.” That said, Seacrest explained that he’s spent enough time onstage with contestants to know when a critique has confused them, which is why he’s been doing more follow-up questioning of the judges this year. “The intent is never to press the judges’ buttons,” he said. “I’ve stood next to those kids for nine years. I can kind of sense body language when they have heard a critique where they’re not quite sure what it means, or that critique might be something that’s antithetical to the critique they heard three weeks ago, or two weeks ago, or a week ago! So the idea behind that is to try get a little bit of clarity.” And despite their sometimes tense on-air exchanges, Seacrest said he and Cowell are friendly both on and off set and that they’ve never gone to commercial break upset with one another. In fact, he described Cowell leaving next year as being like “losing my oxygen. I don’t know what it will be like without him next year.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
