Shane Gillis is a brand new cast member on SNL. But just days after this announcement went viral, folks around the Internet are now looking at some of the comedian’s past work and asking: WHAT THE HELL?!? Not long after Gillis was confirmed as one of three new faces on Saturday Night Live Season 45 (along with Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang), a video resurfaced of the rising engaging in racist rhetoric. “Chinatown’s f-ckin nuts,” Gillis says in a clip from a September 2018 posted to a YouTube channel called Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast began to circulate online. “Let the f-ckin ch-nks live there,” he adds. Gillis then goes on to toss out insults when talking about eating at Chinese restaurants, complaining about such experiences as follows: “The translation between you and the waiter is such a f–king hassle,” he tells fellow comedian Matt McCusker, doing a Chinese accent. “I’m pointing at it.” The footage immediately outraged SNL viewers and social media users overall, with many of them calling for him to be fired before he even appeared on an episode. “Bigotry and racism is unacceptable. Fire Shane Gillis,” one user wrote on Twitter. “It’s not just that one video,” another user explained. “New #SNL hire Shane Gillis has made a lot of ‘problematic’ comments and jokes over the past years. Will the show cancel him before he stars?” So far, that answer is no. We haven’t heard anything from anyone associated with the long-running sketch show. But the backlash eventually prompted Gillis to address the issue on Twitter. “I’m a comedian who pushes boundaries,” he wrote on Twitter, as you can see above. He added: “I sometimes miss. If you go through my 10 years of comedy, most of it bad, you’re going to find a lot of bad misses. I’m happy to apologize to anyone who’s actually offended by anything I’ve said.” Not exactly a heartfelt mea culpa, huh? Why is it that comedians think they are part of the one profession that is allowed to be offensive and cruel, simply because they’re trying to be funny? Just be funny without being racist. It isn’t that difficult. Gillis and the other additions came after Leslie Jones confirmed her departure on Twitter. “Thank you for all the love and support through my SNL years and I know you will be as excited as I am when you see some of the amazing projects and adventures that I have coming up very soon!” she told fans in a lengthy statement on September 3. “Love you all!!” Jones later added: “I will miss working, creating and laughing with you. “I will miss holding it down with Kenan [Thompson] everyday, I will miss [Cecily Strong’s] impression of me making me laugh at myself often, I will miss [Kate McKinnon’s] loving hugs and talks when I needed. “And of course, Colin [Jost], you porcelain-skinned Ken doll. I will miss all my cast mates!! “Especially being at the table reads with them!! Everyone needs to know Leslie Jones couldn’t have done any of the things I did without these people.” Saturday Night Live premieres on NBC Saturday, September 28, at 11:30 p.m. EST.
For the last several weeks, we’ve been documenting the many ways in which June Shannon is in trouble with her family. But these issues between loves ones suddenly seem harmless and unimportant. Because June Shannon is now in serious trouble with the law. The long-time reality star — who rose to fame as the mother of a child beauty pageant contestant on Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and who now anchors her very own series, Mama June: From Not to Hot — has been indicted on a charge of felony drug possession. Said charge stems from a March arrest during which time cops in Alabama said Shannon had on her person both crack cocaine and a glass pipe. She was caught in a gas station parking lot at that time, arguing loudly with terrible boyfriend Geno Doak. He was also arrested back then for drug charges and domestic violence and both he and Shannon have now also been hit with a misdemeanor charge for paraphernalia. According to TMZ, Mama June was not at the Alabama courthouse Friday for this indictment. However, in a strange twist (although perhaps not to strange, given this family’s history), her sister was there with a camera crew, hoping to stage some sort of intervention. This would have been the second intervention relatives held for June in the past few months, as they previously tried to convince her to leave Doak and focus on her children’s well-being. Alas, June has seemingly chosen Geno over daughters Alana and Lauryn. The former is currently residing with the latter and has said she won’t return home until her mother leaves Geno. On September 1, Alana posted a selfie on Instagram and as a caption she wrote: “It’s ok not to be ok sometimes it’s hard to follow your heart doesn’t mean you losing everybody bruising.” Fans of the young star took to the comments and began to share their love and support for her during this challenging time in her family’s life. More recently, various sources have reported that Shannon is selling everything she can just to make ends meet and won’t even have anywhere to live in the near future. She plans to just ride around in an RV with Doak and, we presume, at least try not to ger arrested again. It’s all rather tragic when you remember there is at least one young kid involved here. As for this latest, significant legal situation? Shannon is due to be in court for a hearing later this month. She has not yet commented on the indictment nor has WEtv yet canceled her reality show. But the network really would be well-served to distance itself from this troubled start as quickly as possible and in as strong terms as it possibly can. We’re thinking of you, Alana. Try to hang in there, okay? View Slideshow: June Shannon: Living Out of Vile Hotel Rooms with Crazy BF Geno After Crack Arrest!?
We don’t normally agree with Tamra Judge, but she may be right when she says that Emily Simpson’s marriage is doomed . There has been a lot of tension in that marriage, and we’ve seen some of it on The Real Housewives of Orange County . Recently, fans have seen Shane all but ignore his family in order to “do what he has to do” to pass the California bar exam. While everyone knows it’s a tough exam and requires a lot of effort, dude was either ghosting Emily or being full-on rude. Well, he failed to pass the bar exam. As such, he made his wife feel like crap and still isn’t allowed to practice law in California. Will this spell the end of them? E! News reports that they have confirmed that Shane Simpson did in fact fail the infamous bar examination in February. There are two important updates, however: The first piece of good news is that he took it again, a couple of months ago, and is currently awaiting the results. The second reason for hope is that, as an insider further explains: “The pass rate in Feb. 2019 was only 31 percent.” “It’s the hardest bar exam in the country,” the source adds, and indeed, many legal experts believe this to be true. Perhaps it wasn’t his fault, in other words, or due to a lack of effort that he came up sort. It’s really damn difficult. Still, on Tuesday’s episode of The Real Housewives of Orange County , fans recall that Shane was out of town. He took the bar exam – which lasts multiple days – hours away from home. While there, he got a hotel room. Ostensibly, the hotel room was so that he could continue to study in peace and quiet between testing sessions. Real talk? Nobody wants to drive multiple hours this way and that, especially in the middle of a test. To take a test well, you need to be at your best. Learning it all doesn’t do as much good if you can’t think clearly. Of course, we’ve already seen how Shane studying for the bar exam the first time around impacted his marriage. When Shane returned from his (failed) bar exam, Emily spoke to him very directly about their litany of issues. “I feel very upset and resentful towards you,” Emily told him. She then acknowledged that the feeling is mutual, adding: “And I know you feel upset and resentful towards me.” That may sound worrisome – it most definitely is – but airing these issues aloud is the first step towards making things better. However, Emily had more to say to Shane. A lot more. She clearly does not feel respected by her own spouse, and after seeing him on Bravo, it’s not hard to see why. “I have trouble with the way that you talk to me sometimes,” Emily confessed to her spouse during an emotional exchange. She expresses: “I don’t like the condescending tone.” “It’s sarcasm all the time,” Emily laments. She summarizes her displeasure with his treatment of her: “I get tired of being the butt of all your jokes sometimes.” Yeah, that kind of terse treatment and dismissal – which we see frequently on the show – gets very old, very quickly. Clearly, things with Shane are far from ideal and have been trending the wrong direction long before this incident. Emily told him that she wants to go to couples therapy with him to work out their extensive issues as a result. (Much better than just a quick ambush on camera, of course, even if these are reality stars who play the part.) However, Emily has done her best to maintain a healthy perspective and is making her priorities extremely clear. As she recently wrote on her Instagram account, she knows that her husband is not the center of her universe. “At the end of the day,” Emily shared with her followers. “All that really matters is what my children think of me.” View Slideshow: The Real Housewives of Orange County Season 14: Everything We Know That is an extremely healthy perspective to have. Once you have kids, they’re your primary responsibility. Of course, your marriage and how you handle that will influence the kids, as well. Here’s wishing her the best in a tough situation.
The Duggar family will always be a controversial bunch. But if there’s one member of the Counting On clan that most folks can agree on, it’s Jinger. Jinger has rebelled against Jim Bob’s strict teachings in a number of significant ways, which has endeared her to the many who have been highly critical of her family. But to fans of the Duggars, Jinger still represents the core, ultra-conservative values that drew them to her family in the first place. It’s a tricky balancing act, but the mother-of-one pulls it off. Speaking of her offspring, it seems Jinger’s appeal is hereditary, as it’s possible that none of Jim Bob and Michelle’s grandchildren have received quite as much adoration as Felicity. Every time Jinger posts new photos of Felicity , the crowd goes wild. So you can imagine the reaction to the revelation that the 1-year-old took her first steps this week, “Seeing Felicity grow and develop new skills is like watching a flower bloom,” Jinger captioned the pic above. ”It seems like overnight that she’s gone from being fully reliant upon us for everything, to mastering crawling, leaving dad & mom chasing her all over the place!” she continued. “Last night, Felicity conquered her rocking horse, which was no small feat! She had that thing moving…might I add, it was on carpet, making it much more difficult to maintain speed,” Jinger went on before getting to the big reveal: “Felicity has taken a few solo steps in recent days, but seems to embrace a more cautious approach when it comes to her strides. I know that these days will pass quickly, and she will be running all over the place. “I am just so thankful to have a front row seat, watching this little one explore the world around her. Many were quick to shower Jinger and her family with congratulations, including her sister-in-law Anna: “Such a precious season of life! Felicity is beautiful inside and out!” Josh’s wife wrote. Others echoed that sentiment, including one fan, who wrote: “Enjoy this time they grow up so fast! She’s adorable.” Yes, it’s more than a little ironic that the so-called “rebel Duggar” has been the one to unite the Counting On community. Here’s hoping her daughter inherited her defiant spirit. Wednesday marked the 18th anniversary of 9/11, a day on which thousands of lives were lost, and America’s political climate was forever changed. Countless celebrities paid tribute to the fallen — and more than a few tripped over their words while marking this most delicate of occasions. Among them was Khloe Kardashian, a seasoned veteran when it comes to both putting her foot in her mouth and fending off unwarranted criticism. We’ll leave up top you to decide which description best fits her latest controversy. As you’re probably aware, Khloe and her sisters are of Armenian descent on the side of their late father, Robert Kardashian Sr. In the past, they’ve discussed their pride in their heritage and used their platforms to raise awareness of the Armenian genocide and other matters of which many Americans might be ignorant. But as you can see, fans felt that Khloe’s latest statement of affection for her ancestors’ homeland was a bit ill-timed. Armenia had no involvement in the 9/11 attacks, but many felt that it’s a day on which all Americans should focus on their shared identity, not their individual ethnic compositions: “365 days on your calendar and you chose today to say something like this..hmm,” one fan wrote. “Be proud of your roots of course but out of all the days you tweet this today. It’s ironic given that your own brand of jeans is called ‘Good American,'” another echoed. Needless to say, Khloe’s tweet wasn’t exactly a hit with her fanbase. But hey, at least Khloe wasn’t the only one to step in it on America’s most somber day of memorial. Former Teen Mom OG star Farrah Abraham took her daughter to Ground Zero and forgot the difference between a terrorist attack and a purveyor of Buffalo chicken taquitos. “Okay, so we wanted to do, since it’s gonna be September 11, in honor of the Freedom Towers and observatory deck and everything, of 7-Eleven, we are going to do this,” she said on Instagram Live. “Wow, look at this guys,” she added, panning the camera across the 9/11 memorial. So yeah, it could have been worse for Khloe. But hey, at least Farrah’s not alone in making that particular gaffe . View Slideshow: Khloe Kardashian Shares 5 Tips for Looking Skinny AF
When news of the college admissions bribery scandal first went public in March, two actresses quickly emerged as the most prominent figures ensnared in the FBI’s “Varsity Blues” sting operation. Now, one of them has been sentenced to prison for attempting to buy her daughter’s way into the school of her choice. Five months after Felicity Huffman pled guilty to paying out $15,000 in bribes to rig the SATs in her child’s favor, the actress — best known for her role in the ABC drama Desperate Housewives — has been sentenced to 14 days behind bars. Huffman spoke in her own defense at her sentence hearing this afternoon, echoing her attorney’s claims that she did not realize anyone would be harmed by her actions. “I am deeply sorry to the students, parents, colleges and universities impacted by my actions.” she told the judge. “I have inflicted more damage (on her daughter) than I could’ve ever imagined,” Huffman continued. “I was frightened, I was stupid and I was so wrong. I am deeply ashamed of what I have done.” In addition to her jail time, the 56-year-old received a $30,000 fine, 250 hours of community, and one year of supervised release. Huffman was joined in court by her husband, actor William H. Macy. The couple bee-lined to waiting SUVs after leaving the courtroom and did not speak with members of the press. Huffman will start her prison sentence on a yet-to-be-determined date in the near future. While Huffman got off with a slap on the wrist (Prosecutors originally wanted her to serve four months in prison, but reduced their recommendation to one month following a favorable parole report.), her status as a convicted felon will follow her for the rest of her life. This means that she will never be able to own a firearm (probably not a matter of great concern to the actress), and will not be allowed to vote until she’s completed her probation. In the wake of the news about Huffman’s sentencing, many thoughts turned to her alleged co-conspirator Lori Loughlin. The Full House actress is the other famous face associated with the scandal, and she’s in a much tougher position than Huffman. Loughlin turned down the plea deal that Huffman accepted — this, despite facing far more severe charges. (While Huffman pled guilty to shelling out $15,000 in bribes, Loughlin stands accused of doling out $500,000 to help secure admission to USC for both of her daughters.) Strangely, Huffman’s sentence might translate to good news for Loughlin, as it’s considered a major defeat for prosecutors, who might now be inclined to offer the actress a second plea deal. Hopefully, this time, she’ll be smart enough to take it. We’ll have further updates on this developing story as more information becomes available.
Language learning has come a long way since the time you were struggling to differentiate cabello and caballo (for what it’s worth, cabello means hair while cabello means horse) in high school Spanish. Source: Hello Beautiful / Courtesy of Hello Beautiful and Madame Noire On Wednesday evening, Madame Noire and Hello Beautiful held a screening for ‘ The Weekend ,’ a new screenplay written and directed by Stella Meghie. The rom com is about a comedian named Zadie, played by Sasheer Zamata, who spends the weekend at her judgmental mothers’ (played by Kym Whitley) bed and breakfast with her ex-boyfriend (played by Tone Bell) and his new girlfriend (played by DeWanda Wise). The movie begins with Zadie doing a stand-up routine essentially discussing how stupid it is to think she could actually be friends with her ex-boyfriend before leading us directly into the movie. The trailer for this movie doesn’t do the actual movie justice. I was pleasantly surprised when watching this movie at the painfully honest, relatable moments that many Black women can feel when fully trying to let go of an ex. The movie is beautifully shot and the lighting for the movie is extremely well done. I loved that Meghie cast two dark skin women to play the lead and illustrate that they are desirable by men whether it’s with their natural hair or their weaves. The movie shows the range of DeWanda Wises’ acting and Sasheer Zamata will leave you gasping for air with laughter. At the screening, actor Tone Bell was in conversation with Madame Noire culture editor Veronica Wells and admitted that out of all the actors’ Zamata ad-libbed the most. He further revealed, “We had a lot of fun with this movie but many parts were cut out, I realize, if they left it in, it would have been a totally different movie.” I’m glad it’s the movie it turned out to be. It was refreshing and relatable and easily can become a cult classic in the Black community. I haven’t felt anything so authentic since Awkward Black Girl back in its YouTube days. Zamata is undoubtedly the star and in future I want to see everything and anything she’s involved in. The movie releases Friday, September 13th and will be available in select theaters and on demand. This is definitely one to watch! Keep clicking to see images from the screening party in New York City hosted by Madame Noire and Hello Beautiful .
For his S/S 2020 collection held at Pier 59 Studios on Sunday, Romeo Hunte explored deconstructionism and the definition of “business attire.” Amongst a star-studded crowd, fashion insiders gathered to see what the Brooklyn-based designer would bring to the fashion masses. The juxtaposition of the collection showed Hunte’s desires to blend two worlds together — streetwear and business wear. The collection featured everything from oversized abstract-print blazers over cuffed denim shorts to parka trench coats where one half was a striped blazer and the other half was a denim jacket. Source: Ron Adar / Getty Hunte has always been one to use juxtaposition in his collection, perhaps to show that fashion doesn’t have to be so straight and narrow and that multiple identities can co-exist. While that is understandable and commendable, there was seemingly a disconnect between a few of Hunte’s pieces or rather their pairing, such as a denim shearling-laced jacket overtop an abstract crop top and leather mini skirt. Source: Ron Adar / Getty Some looks, like one male model who walked the runway with a black blazer stitched into jeans one piece, almost would have operated better as separates to co-exist with other pieces in the wardrobe. I constantly reminded myself that this was for the Spring and Summer, but most of the collection felt like a New York block party instead of an accessible way to dress for summer Fridays at the office. Source: Ron Adar / Getty There were models in one-legger fits, the bodice split in half and held together by silver metallic rings and exposed zippers. Again, the idea of merging two very prominent markets is extremely doable, but the main question becomes who is the target consumer or the ideal celebrity clientele. To bring streetwear to the luxury market, as Hunte cites his clientele to be, the fabric choice has to reflect the target market and creatively, a flow should take place. Source: Ron Adar / Getty Don’t get me wrong, there were a few moments of potential with some of his fringe parks, abstract sets, and tailored crop blazers. There was a black-and-white dress that offered promise to the traditional and trendsetter, and he had a bold yellow and a bold red suit make their debut for those of us who love a pop of color. While the pieces individually can be pulled apart to make some interesting connections, I would have loved to see more business-skewed formal sets with a bit of street funk on them to show more accessible opportunities for those who work the 9-5.
