When Australian writer-director Julia Leigh’s Sleeping Beauty made its debut at Cannes last May, the responses among critics I talked to veered from bland outrage to vexed boredom. That doesn’t leave a lot of middle ground, and I had to see Sleeping Beauty a second time before I was reasonably sure what I thought about it. I’m still not reasonably sure what I think about it: The picture is clinical in its approach and its technique, yet it leaves so many questions unanswered — it’s straightforward in a vague, maddening way. It’s also strangely, obliquely compelling.
Spirits were bright Wednesday night in West Hollywood when Fox Searchlight celebrated the season with their annual holiday party — really, just an excuse to fete Oscar candidates Win Win , Tree of Life , Shame , Martha Marcy May Marlene , and The Descendants like debs at a coming out ball. ‘Tis the day after Thanksgiving and if you aren’t out shopping fighting in stores you’re home recovering from eating too much. After a 15-hour meeting on Friday, (November 26th), the NBA Players Union and the owners have reached a tentative agreement, ending the lockout that has caused many games to be cancelled. The season will start on December 25th and there will be 66 games played instead of 88. Two months of the season have been cancelled. No word on if the all-star game will still be played. Following this 15-year old’s emotional performance last night, Reid contrived an argument with Simon Cowell by somehow claiming he continues to select singles for his pupil that are not age-appropriate. Why are you doing songs for old people? he asked in one of the more insane assessments of the season. Simon responded that his fellow panelist was coming up with “stupid, pointless criticism” and he’s right, but there’s also little doubt he encouraged this outburst beforehand. On last night’s episode of “Braxton Family Values”, we got a deeper look into Tamar’s singing career, Traci’s dreams of opening a salon, Towanda and Andre’s marriage issues and Toni’s failing assistant. While all the sisters are in L.A, Traci decides that she wants to either open up a hair salon in Maryland or continue singing backup with her sisters. After asking for her sisters help and advice, she decides that she wants to pursue the hair salon and even takes a quick class while in L.A. Towanda and Andre are still having marriage issues after Towanda shares with him that she has been asked by Toni to come to L.A and whip her new assistant into shape. Andre complains that Towanda is putting her sisters ahead of his needs which causes more distance in their relationship. Once Towanda gets to L.A., she finds out that Toni’s assistant needs more help than she expected. Toni asks Towanda to stay in L.A for a little while longer and help her out as much as possible, which will definitely cause even more problems with her and Andre’s relationship. Tamar has decided to begin working on her album. Her husband, Vince, helps hook her up with a studio session with one of the best producers in the game, however, with Tamar’s ego and big mouth, she feels like his skills are rather mediocre compared to her singing abilities and she decides to seek help elsewhere. The only problem is that she decides to do this without talking to her husband first, and wants to have a “musical affair” with a well established producer named Harvey. Once she finally gets up enough courage to share this with her husband, they have a small argument which ends with Vince saying, “I’m done with this” and Tamar getting up and walking out of the room. Last night, VH1′s “Love & Hip Hop” premiered the season 2 debut episode where we were able to watch Chrissy beat cast-mate Kimbella literally out of her seat. Emily B., Chrissy, Olivia and Somaya Reece gathered at a hotel suite to celebrate Emily’s independence from rapper, Fabolous. Jim Jones’ manager and Kimbella were in attendance and things got hectic when Kimbella reveled that she had dated Fab, 3 years ago when Emily was pregnant. Watch how things unfold from there.
