SIFF: Emile Hirsch on Killer Joe Pressure and David Gordon Green’s Secret Movie Prince Avalanche

At the Seattle International Film Festival over the weekend to fete director and Lifetime Achievement honoree William Friedkin and present their NC-17 Southern-fried potboiler Killer Joe , actor Emile Hirsch spoke with Movieline about the “secret” movie he’d just shot with David Gordon Green ( Prince Avalanche , also starring Paul Rudd) and the experience of being on a Friedkin set, where the pressure to deliver on a tight schedule was palpable. “If you messed up your lines or something, Billy would make you pay a little bit,” Hirsch said. “You really didn’t want to mess up at all.” Hirsch’s Killer Joe character already suffers his share of punishment in the brutal black comedy, adapted from the play by Tracy Letts ( Bug ); he plays Chris, a trailer park-dwelling drug dealer who enlists a cold-blooded cop (Matthew McConaughey) to kill his mother. Things go awry, to say the least, drawing the entire morally-corrupt family (Thomas Haden Church, Gina Gershon, Juno Temple) into the fray, with violent consequences. “On set it was a high wire act,” Hirsch said, introducing Friedkin’s tribute event at the Seattle Film Festival. “He would be totally supportive of the actors to give the best performance that they could, but he let you know that you weren’t just playing with free time. You were here to shoot a movie very quickly and do the very best you could; he didn’t want you to give a great take on the tenth take when you sort of felt like it, he wanted you to give ‘the take’ the first time out. He would constantly remind you, ‘This ain’t a play, mo.’” Friedkin’s reputation preceded him before Hirsh went to meet for Killer Joe , the director’s latest feature following 2007’s Bug . “The chance to get to work with him was sort of intimidating, because you don’t really know what to expect,” recalled Hirsch to Movieline. “A lot of these legends are like, is this guy a legend for his movies or is he just some crazy maniac axe-murderer? But what he lived up to was the energy; he’s a combination of a tornado of energy but also this really specific intellect. He has so many stories and such insight, and is really quick on his feet and spontaneous and in the moment. He’s a really interesting mix of elements.” That’s not to say Friedkin wasn’t demanding, especially when it came to Hirsch’s more punishing scenes. His character is beaten by goons and bashed with canned goods — Killer Joe has a way with perverting even the most familiar of comfort foods — and Friedkin relished in pouring on the fake blood. “My character definitely has a bad week,” Hirsch laughed. “I think I felt the pressure in the sense that he doesn’t like to do a lot of takes, so there would be one or two takes that you’d know you would have and you wouldn’t want to blow your lines or not give your best performance. He would light that fire under you and there would be pressure, and you knew that if you fell off the high wire act, there wasn’t a net underneath — it kind of hurts, you definitely don’t want to fall.” Hirsch also discussed Prince Avalanche , the David Gordon Green-directed indie filmed under the radar last month near Austin, Texas. A remake of the Icelandic comedy Either Way , about two men on a road-striping crew, the film stars Hirsch and Paul Rudd and, as Hirsch told Movieline, his involvement sprang from another ill-fated project he and Green once hoped to make. “ Prince Avalanche — I didn’t actually realize it was a secret movie, I just thought we were making a really small movie that no one knew about. David had called me and I’d been wanting to work with him for years; we almost made a movie called Goat a while back. And it’s this kind of crazy, awesome cool script we shot with Paul.” Hirsch kept details under wraps, though he had this to say about the remake: “[Hirsch’s character] is kind of an interesting dude. It’s very similar to the original in a certain sense. It’s set outside Austin, in Texas. It’ll be an interesting mix of some real pathos mixed with some comedy.” Stay tuned for more with SIFF honorees William Friedkin and Sissy Spacek. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Man Punches 10-Year-Old In The Face During Movie A Washington State moviegoer who took matters into his own hands after becoming fed up with children who were being too loud in a movie theatre has been charged with second-degree assault. The man, who says he thought the child he hit was an adult, claims to have asked the “people” behind him to quiet down while watching Titanic 3D with his girlfriend and became enraged after his request was met with laughter. “I got so mad that it just happened,” Yong Hyun Kim, 21, told police who arrested him the night of April 11 at the AMC Kent Station 14, in Kent, a south Seattle suburb. The 10-year-old lost a tooth and had a bloody nose in the confrontation. ‘Twilight’ Fans Want Kristen Stewart’s Bodyguard To Protect Them

‘People now refer to Kristen Stewart’s bodyguard as ‘HBG,’ ‘ co-creator of ‘Kristen Stewart’s Hot Bodyguard’ Facebook page says. By Kara Warner Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment Full disclosure about my love for “Twilight”: I don’t so much love the books and movies as much as I completely and totally adore the franchise’s loyal, enthusiastic, entertaining fans. Really it’s their passion and dedication that keeps me interested in the whole thing as we inch closer and closer to the release of the final film, “Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” That’s why I’ve decided to dedicate this week’s “Twilight” Tuesday to one of the many groups of fans with whom I’ve become acquainted with over the last few years, Kristen Stewart’s Hot Bodyguard , more specifically, the three lovely ladies who birthed the creative and entertaining concept: Lynsey Jacob, Sarah Morrill and Jennifer Kelley. “Kristen Stewart’s Hot Bodyguard” is a Facebook group dedicated to, you guessed it, Kristen Stewart ‘s hot bodyguard. The origin of their popular group (3,000 members and growing!) can be traced to first glimpses of said bodyguard during the “Eclipse” press tour, followed by an in-person encounter at Stewart’s NYC promotion for “Welcome to the Rileys,” and then an excellent bit of brainstorming during a walk to the subway that begot the term “HBG” (Hot Bodyguard) and the Facebook page. Since then, the ladies have kept close tabs on their man via photos, fellow fans and making the occasional trip to a major event. (I was lucky enough to meet Jacob, Morrill and Kelley at such an event, last year’s “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” premiere. “The goal is always to get a wave,” Jacob told MTV News of the most memorable aspects of their HBG sightings. “It’s exciting. Another one that always cracks me up is watching all of the tweets about HBG when there’s an event going on. When he wasn’t at the Kids’ Choice Awards, people were freaking out. And these tweets are from around the world! Half the time it’s in another language.” “I actually really enjoy making graphics and fun little [themed] pictures for the page,” Morrill added. “I also designed the shirts that we made for the ‘Breaking Dawn’ premiere last year and have already started working on some ideas for this year’s shirts and other swag. Other than that, it’s always cool to see how excited the fans get when we post new pictures or videos of HBG, especially because I’m just as excited to see them as they are! We will be representing Team HBG to its fullest at the ‘Breaking Dawn -Part 2’ premiere in L.A. in November and are excited to meet new fans and see some old ones from the premiere last year.” One thing to point out about these ladies is that they don’t take themselves too seriously. Yes, they are dedicated fans, but they also just want to continue to have fun with the concept. “When Stephenie Meyer grabbed a hold of our HBG heads on a stick and took photos with them, that was so cool,” Jacobs recalled of the author embracing their “fan art” at last year’s premiere. “We were always worried that people would think we were crazy instead of just creative fans, but overall, the page and the whole concept has been really well-received.” “My dream for the group is for it to continue for as long as possible, maybe even until a gray-haired HBG is beating away the paparazzi with his cane in order to protect Kristen,” Morrill joked. “Truthfully, when we started this page a year and half ago, we never could have imagined what it would become. People around the world now refer to Kristen Stewart’s bodyguard as “HBG.” We did that. Stephenie Meyer knows who we are. Kristen mentioned our page in an article for British GQ last year. The awesome folks at MTV think we’re cool. It really doesn’t get much better than that! The only thing I could imagine that would put a cherry on top of this entire experience is to one day be able to change the group’s profile picture to one of the three of us with Kristen and HBG.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Jay-Z Used Old Subway Signs For New Brooklyn Nets Logo

Black-and-white crest is ‘a throwback to Brooklyn and what we’re about,’ Jay tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Brooklyn Nets’ logo Photo: NBA Jay-Z once fancied himself the black Branch Rickey, the man who broke the athletic color barrier and signed Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Sure, Hov used poetic license when he spit the line on 2009’s “Brooklyn Go Hard,” but now that Mr. Carter is part of the brain trust that will transplant the NBA’s Nets to his native BK, the God MC has surely changed the game. At the end of April, the Brooklyn Nets unveiled their new logo, a Jigga-approved black-and-white crest, which bucks the flash and pizzazz typical of most NBA logos these days. “I wanted to make it really classic and strong; a throwback to Brooklyn and what we’re about,” Jay told MTV News on Monday after his press conference where he announced his upcoming two-day Made in America music festival in Philadelphia. Since his 1996 debut album ( Reasonable Doubt ) Jay has stood as an ambassador for New York City’s largest borough. Though the music mogul has gone on to acquire life’s finer things, through songs like “Brooklyn’s Finest,” “Where I’m From” and his #1 hit “Empire State of Mind,” Hova has always rapped about the darker side of his hometown as well. The struggle eventually breeds strength and it was the strength that Jay hoped to capture in the new Nets design. “It’s real gritty and we’re not about flash — well, sometimes,” he said with a brief pause. “Just the roots of Brooklyn as this very bold, strong, simple logo” When the NBA’s Seattle Sonics franchise moved to Oklahoma in 2008, the team was rechristened the Oklahoma City Thunder and was branded with a new color-filled logo fit for post-millennium basketball. With this new Nets move, Jay-Z and Nets brass looked to the past in order to ensure the team’s place in the future. Vintage New York transit system signage served as their chief inspiration. “It was really a take off the old subway signs, if you look at the old subway signs they were in black and white. It was that strong, beautiful, iconic black and white,” Jay said. “I wanted to pick something that would stand the test of time and be here forever.” What do you think of the new Brooklyn Nets logo? Catholic League President Slams Dan Savage as the Ultimate Bully

Catholic League President Bill Donohue is not having any of Dan Savage’s apology . On Friday, the gay rights activist delivered the keynote addresses at the National High School Journalism Conference in Seattle, saying – while making a general point about how Christians look past plenty of passages in the Bible, most notably those promoting slavery – that folks should “learn to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about gay people.” In response, a handful of students walked out on the speech and Savage has faced criticism from a number of organizations. Dan Savage on the Bible: Ignore Homosexual BS! Savage has since clarified certain remarks, specifically saying he regrets referring to the students who left his lecture as making a “pansy-ass move,” acknowledging this is a form of bullying. But is he sorry for the message he was trying to send? No. “If believers can ignore what the Bible says about slavery, they can ignore what the Bible says about homosexuality,” Savage has reiterated as the crux of his point. But none of that is enough for Donohue. He has released a statement that castigates Savage for a “history of making… vile, disgusting and bigoted remarks” and says: Ironically, Savage’s bullying of Christian students was done in the name of protesting the bullying of homosexuals. When it comes to bullying, Savage has no peer. We hope the Obama administration, which has welcomed him to the White House, takes note. What do YOU think, THGers? Does Savage owe Christians more of an apology?
