Soundgarden Triumph At Red Rocks Reunion Show

After reuniting last year, the grunge gods prove they can still shred. By Mary J. DiMeglio Chris Cornell (file) Photo: Bill McCay/ Getty Images MORRISON, Colorado — An ecstatic-looking Chris Cornell gazed over the Red Rocks Amphitheater on Monday night and declared, “We’re Soundgarden , and we’re back.” Setting off the night with “Searching with My Good Eye Closed” from 1991’s Badmotorfinger and the Grammy-winning “Spoonman,” one of their first big hits, the recently reunited grunge gods quickly cleared any doubts about whether they still had it, even after 14 years apart. “We’re doing this because of you,” Cornell professed. After the frontman encouraged the crowd to “smoke it all so you don’t get busted on the way home,” the band unleashed “Jesus Christ Pose,” with Matt Cameron’s pummeling of the drums reminding everyone that while he’s served as drummer for Pearl Jam since Soundgarden’s 1997 breakup, it was his work with tonight’s headliner that made him sought after. The band then allowed the audience to take a breath, slowing down the already-sleepy “Blow Up the Outside World.” The song’s fade out had the sold-out crowd of 9,400 chanting in unison. Cornell reveled at the venue his reformed group had taken on. “We played here before, and maybe a little bit was lost on us,” he said. “It’s f—ing amazing.” Between songs, he coaxed attendees to shriek just for the hell of it, giving props to the amphitheater’s legendary acoustics. “This big rock over here and this one over there,” he said, referencing the two giant stones that flank the seating area, “it acts like a speaker, funnels down to my head. It’s trippy.” The Seattle foursome revisited their breakthrough album, Superunknown, for three in row, following “The Day I Tried to Live” with “My Wave” and “Fell on Black Days.” They went all the way back to their Screaming Life/Fopp EP for “Nothing to Say” and shredded eardrums with “Rusty Cage.” For “Outshined,” Cornell dropped his guitar in favor of a microphone stand as his temporary weapon of choice, alternately waving it and pounding it into the stage. As seasoned bands often do, Soundgarden changed up some of their biggest hits when most fans probably would have preferred the radio version. And while Cornell shied away from some of the notes on the choruses of “Black Hole Sun” and “Pretty Noose,” it seems he was saving his pipes for the set-ending fan favorite “Slaves & Bulldozers.” Having admirably conquered the night’s 20-plus selections, Cornell explored the heights of his iconic wail without hesitation. The band — which released its first-ever live album, Live on the I-5, earlier this year — is currently crafting its first studio LP since 1996. Though nothing new was debuted during Monday night’s hit parade, fans can be hopeful that they channel the passion they displayed for their old material. Stop The Domestic Violence: Comedian Faizon Love Held Without Bond For More Than 24 Hours After Mystery Incident

Faizon Love laid hands on somebody late Thursday night… or maybe Friday morning… no one is sure who it was or exactly what happened. But as of yesterday morning, he was still in jail. Then yesterday, he bailed himself out and went back to work as if nothing had ever happened. Faizon Love bailed out of a Seattle jail Saturday afternoon and went straight to a comedy club where he was the scheduled headliner, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting. The funnyman – famous for roles in Elf and Couple’s Retreat – was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence by Seattle cops early Friday morning. Love was released from the Kings County Jail at 4.01pm Saturday and the popular comedy venue, The Parlor, confirmed to us that he will be performing at 7:30 pm. And still, no one knows what the hell happened. Except that he was initially denied bail, and then eventually had to come up with 10Gs to spring himself. SMH. Source

Death Cab For Cutie’s Guide To Seattle: Coffee And Drum Lessons From Dave Grohl

In part two of our ‘Seattle Sonics’ series, the band takes us to their Sip & Ship ‘nerve center’ and American Music shop. By James Montgomery Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla and Jason McGerr Photo: MTV News SEATTLE — Chris Walla is a bit of a multitasker: That much is clear just by his rather prodigious output as a producer, solo musician and full-time member of Death Cab for Cutie . So it should probably come as no surprise that, for MTV News’ second edition of “Seattle Sonics,” Walla decided to take us to one of his favorite spots in Seatown: Sip & Ship, the kind of place that defines multitasking. See, S&S is the sort of place that seemingly only exists in Seattle: A communal, cozy combination shipping depot/coffee bar that also happens to be a gift shop. Oh, and they make a mean grilled cheese, too. Located in the city’s Ballard neighborhood — right down the block from a nefarious FedEx Office outpost — Walla first visited the shop six years ago (after a rather terrible experience at said FedEx), and in the time since, Sip & Ship has become the de facto home office for all things Death Cab. Merch, master tapes of albums, musical instruments and the occasional eBay purchase all pass through S&S. Walla has become close friends with the shop’s owners (one of them, Diana Naramore, even made a cameo in his “Sing Again” video ) and the coffee’s really great, too. “This place has become a communications and shipping and caffeine and calorie hub without which I don’t think Death Cab for Cutie would actually be able to do any business at all. This is one of the Seattle nerve centers of the band,” Walla explained. “We did a whole series of test-pressings for the new record, and we got four or five shipments of them here. We’d pick ’em up and then go home and listen to records.” Drummer Jason McGerr also chimed in: “It’s a far safer bet than my doorstep — which I don’t even step on all that often,” he said, laughing. And while Sip & Ship has been an important cog in the Death Cab machine for six years, there’s another spot nearby that’s been part of their lives for much longer: American Music, a Seattle institution since it first opened its doors in 1973 and the place where local bands (you know, like Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains) went to get their gear. It’s not surprising that both Walla — who grew up nearby — and McGerr — who worked there in 1994, when he was 19 years old — chose it as the next place they took our cameras. “I traded all my paychecks for equipment, and I got to know a whole lot of local drummers,” McGerr said from his old post behind the American counter. “And there were times, 10 minutes before close, Dave Grohl would come in and sit down and just start blowing on drums and the front door would shut and we’d sit there and watch him. … There was always a scene happening within the store. If you played music and you got your supplies in Seattle, it was from American Music.” And American was also where you’d find Walla hanging out as a slightly awkward teenager, doing “double drummer stuff” with friend (and former Death Cab drummer) Nathan Good. And he did it mostly out of necessity, because back then, there weren’t many places 15-year-old music obsessives could hang out, due mostly to Seattle’s oppressive Teen Dance Ordinance , which made all-ages shows all but impossible to organize. And, really, to Walla, that’s what makes the place much more than a music store. It’s sort of his home away from home. “I got a lot of stuff here that was cast-off junk, but I still use it,” Walla said. “There are tons of music stores that are just enormous boxes, that are full of guitars and drums and cymbals and whatever, and they might have more stock than a place like American does, but American has the heart and soul of a music store that I want when I walk into a music store.” Death Cab for Cutie: Seattle Sonics continues all week on MTVNews.com. On Thursday, we’ll head to a vaunted (and now defunct) all-ages venue where DCFC learned how to be a band — and still made it home in time for curfew. ‘Scream 4’: The Reviews Are In

The latest installment of Wes Craven’s slasher-flick franchise ‘just might be the bloodiest of them all,’ writes to one reviewer. By Eric Ditzian Neve Campbell in “Scream 4” Photo: Weinstein Co. If the critics are to be believed, “Scream 4” comes closer to recapturing the horror franchise’s bloody and ironic glory than anything else we’ve seen in nearly 15 years. Unlike the first two films (the original in 1996, the second in 1997), overall reactions to 2000’s “Scream 3” were neatly summed up by one Entertainment Weekly reviewer who said that “the only thing the movie kills with any decisiveness is your time.” By contrast, the critics have been relatively kind to “Scream 4,” often praising its twisty plot and welcome humor, though occasionally lamenting over its tired premise. For those critiques and more, read on for what the pros are saying about the new Wes Craven film. The Story “[T]he story premise is neat: Having published a self-help book about how she has, as Oprah might say, moved on after outwitting every previous Ghostface who ever lunged her way, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell, looking uncommonly lovely) returns to promote her tome in her hometown of Woodsboro. Old Screamers Dewey-the-cop (David Arquette) and Gale-the-journalist (Courteney Cox), now married, are there to greet her. So is Sidney’s teenage niece, Jill (Emma Roberts). And so, conveniently, is Jill’s collection of glossy friends and classmates, each ripe for slaughter, or at least struggle, now that Sidney’s back in town. Among the potential targets, Hayden Panettiere and Rory Culkin stand out as a snarky party girl and an avid movie geek. In her own corner of the frame, Alison Brie (‘Community,’ ‘Mad Men’) happily goes for the jugular as Sidney’s aggressive young book publicist.” — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly The Scares “Craven made sure he continued to keep the franchise R-rated. ‘Scream 4’ just might be the bloodiest of them all. There are rooms covered in blood, intestines spilled out onto beds, knives being driven into people’s foreheads (this is so crazy amazing I can’t even begin to tell you), and much, much more. The film earns its stripes and the moniker of a ‘slasher’ film.” — Brad Miska, Blooding Disgusting The Pace “Individual scenes have passing energy and jokiness, even if nearly all of the latter is highly insular in the way it self-consciously references horror genre tropes and the series’ own history. But the narrative doesn’t build the way it should in a good suspense film; just as it seems that the climax has arrived in a big Stab-A-Thon night at which dozens of horror geeks have congregated to watch the series while Ghostface is on a new tear through town, the film downshifts as it prepares to string out the last series of murders as long as it can before the final revelations (not bad) about who’s behind the mask this time and why.” — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter The Comparison “Like its predecessors, ‘Scream 4’ replaces the values of storytelling and suspense with the value of being in on the joke. Unfortunately, in the 11 years since ‘Scream 3,’ the joke has gotten pretty old … [T]he central conceit of the characters’ fates being determined by the ‘rules’ of horror movies feels irredeemably tired; a clever idea that was worth one movie. When a character comments on how meta everything is, the audience laughs, but why? Only because it’s been conditioned to, just as it’s been conditioned to think that the intellectual window dressing makes the ‘Scream’ movies something more than slasher films.” — Mike Hale, The New York Times The Final Word “Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson let us believe that [the killer] might be anybody (though, according to the rules of horror movies, obviously it isn’t the person you think it might be). But you don’t watch ‘Scream 4’ to solve a mystery, or to identify with believable characters or situations (just one example: there’s a scene set in a hospital that apparently has no medical personnel); you’ll watch it to see a horror movie that has a sense of humor about itself. For ‘Scream’ franchise fans, or for those who like their horror not too horrific, that’s enough.” — Moira Macdonald, The Seattle Times Are you planning to see “Scream 4” in the theaters?
