Soundgarden Reunite In Seattle For Secret Show

For first concert in 13 years, set list includes ‘Spoonman,’ ‘Outshined,’ other fan faves. By Tom Biro Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell performs in Seattle on Friday Photo: Tom Biro SEATTLE — On Friday night, 13 years after last taking the stage together, the members of grunge-era band Soundgarden reunited in front of about 1,000 fans at Seattle’s Showbox at the Market for a rousing performance that kicked off with fan favorite “Spoonman” and closed with a cover of the Doors’ “Waiting for the Sun.” The surprise performance comes just four months after singer Chris Cornell proclaimed that Soundgarden would return to action . Since that January announcement, the band’s inclusion in August’s Lollapalooza festival in Chicago had been made public, but no additional concert dates had been set. On Thursday afternoon, Seattle radio station 107.7 “The End” began tweeting about the possibility of a “secret” show, and news soon spread that fans on the band’s e-mail list would receive information on when and where it would take place. When word got out that a band going by the name “Nudedragons” (an anagram of Soundgarden) would be playing on Friday night, fans began stalking Twitter and Ticketmaster, awaiting the moment that tickets would go on sale. According to local news reports in Seattle, the available tickets sold out in less than 15 minutes. “That’s Kim. That’s Ben. That’s Matt.,” Cornell informed fans, pointing to his stagemates, halfway through the band’s almost two-hour set, which included a run of more than an hour of nonstop rock before a short break. “And that’s Chris,” responded drummer Matt Cameron, bringing a cheer from the hometown crowd, who appreciated the introductions, though they were hardly needed. “It’s a rehearsal, so if we f— something up, we’re probably going to go through it again,” explained Cornell, just before tearing into “Outshined,” off 1991’s Badmotorfinger. From the fans’ perspective, however, the show appeared to be a rehearsal in name only, with the crowd holding tight to every note, drumbeat and guitar riff sent their way. If the throwing of a guitar symbolizes all things rock and roll, then clearly bassist Ben Shepherd is ready to make a go of it. After tossing his bass in what many hard-core fans recognize as the “end” of the band back in February 1997, it probably won’t go unnoticed that Shepherd did the same thing to close Friday night’s show, in what could be seen as an effort to go back to the way things were — with Soundgarden as the heavy, loud powerhouse that exemplified the early-to-mid ’90s. Friday night’s set list: “Spoonman” “Gun” “Searching With My Good Eye Closed” “Rusty Cage” “Beyond the Wheel” “Flower” “Ugly Truth” “Fell on Black Days” “Hunted Down” “Nothing to Say” “Loud Love” “Blow Up the Outside World” “Pretty Noose” “Outshined” “Slaves and Bulldozers” Encore: “Get on the Snake” “Big Dumb Sex” “Waiting for the Sun” Related Photos Soundgarden In Pictures Related Artists Soundgarden

Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard: A History With The Seattle Mariners

From childhood fandom to playing at Monday’s home opener, Gibbard shares his Mariners memories. By James Montgomery Ben Gibbard Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images The tale of Death Cab for Cutie performing at the Seattle Mariners’ home opener on Monday is actually an act in three parts, starring avowed baseball nut (and DCFC frontman) Ben Gibbard. It’s a story of soaring highs and crushing lows, plus amazing feats of skill. It’s such an epic adventure that we figured it would be best if Gibbard told it himself. Here’s the first act, in which our intrepid hero embarrasses himself at a Mariners/ White Sox game in September 2008. They asked me to throw out the first pitch, and, of course, I said yes. I don’t want to toot my own horn, but I have a pretty good arm. I’m not like a 90-mph fastball kind of guy, but I can hit 70 on a radar gun. I hit 70 one time on a radar gun at one of those pitch-and-throw kind of things. … I have a pretty good arm for somebody who’s not a baseball player … so before the game, I’m down in the catacombs of Safeco Field, and they got a ball girl out there, and I’m throwing curves, I’m throwing sh–ty knucklers, I’m throwing from the full 60-feet-6 inches. … I’m just smoking it in there. So I was like, “OK, I’m not going to try and throw it as hard as I can, but I don’t want to throw one of those lollipop first pitches.” So I go out there, and I’m on a mound, and there’s like 30,000 people out there, and also, I hadn’t thrown in, like, 10 minutes. … I’m thinking, “Maybe I’ll throw a four-seamer, just throw it right in there.” And then I start second-guessing my grips. I’m thinking, “Maybe I’ll throw a two-seamer instead.” And I threw to [Mariners pitcher] Ryan Rowland-Smith, and I threw it and it was low and outside. It just went to the backstop. … I felt like such a dumbass. So after, Ryan Rowland-Smith is signing the ball for me, and he’s like, “Throwing the heat, huh?” And I was so embarrassed. And now, the second act, which also took place in 2008 and saw Gibbard redeem himself with a rather amazing act of dexterity: In the spring of 2008, I went to a Mariners game with my mom. And a foul ball comes into the stands, and I catch it with my hat. I have the video to prove it. I’m not making this up. … The ball comes into the crowd … and I’m like, “Uh-oh, look out,” and I caught it with my hat. It was amazing. You think of that moment happening every time you go to a game, ever since you were a little kid. So I had our management contact the Mariners, so they could get me the footage, because I know no one would believe me. I have it on my phone to show people, because they will never believe me. All of that led to up to last Monday, when Gibbard once again set foot on his field of dreams, to perform a medley of baseball-themed hits — John Fogerty’s “Centerfield” and a somber version of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” — joined by his Death Cab mates. We’re not going to lie to you, there was a lot riding on the performance — and Gibbard was understandably nervous. I mean, [the Mariners] had been floating this idea of us performing since last year, and I always said I would do it. I’ve loved the team since I was a little kid. I got [former Mariners slugger] Alvin Davis’ autograph when I was, like, 9, when he was on the ferry. This was ingrained in who I am. So, yeah, I was kind of nervous. But we went out there and played, and it was great, man. It was sort of like all the things I like the most, aligning into one. Since it was opening day, it was a big production. There were fireworks, and they had set up a little stage behind home plate. We played, and it was pretty amazing. I would definitely do it again. So there you go. Ultimate redemption. Dreams coming true. Who said baseball isn’t a magical game? Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: ‘Kick-Ass’ Related Artists Death Cab For Cutie

Alice In Chains Say ‘There Are Thoughts’ Of A New Album

‘I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t [happen],’ Jerry Cantrell says of heading back into the studio. By Brian Jacks Alice in Chains’ William DuVall and Jerry Cantrell Photo: MTV News The death of Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley in 2002 should have, by any reasonable expectation, ended the career of the platinum-selling rock act. But after an eight-year grieving period and the addition of a new singer, the group is back stronger than ever, with two consecutive singles landing at #1 on the Billboard Rock Songs chart. And nobody’s more pleasantly surprised than guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell. “I took my clothes off and ran down the street screaming at the top of my lungs,” the songsmith joked to MTV News. “It’s cool that we have something to say and there’s somebody out there listening.” For newcomer William DuVall, replacing the enigmatic Staley has been a challenging journey as he’s worked to gain acceptance from a skeptical fanbase. But if three years of sold-out shows are any indication, Duvall has surmounted any audience hesitation, and the singer is now experiencing life in the circle of a chart-topping group. “We toured for two years before we even went into the studio, so that was interesting in itself,” DuVall said. “But now this thing has become more real to us and everybody else, and it’s just another important step in the journey. So yeah, I feel a lot of acceptance and it’s ever-evolving.” The band is currently touring in support of Black Gives Way to Blue, their first new album with DuVall. The record, which spawned no less than two hits, has been certified gold, but the group isn’t resting on their laurels. In fact, all indications are that fans of Alice in Chains may be picking up a second effort in the foreseeable future. “There are thoughts,” Cantrell said of heading back into the studio. “We’ll see how far we get. Staying in the moment is a good way to live and we certainly hope that that happens. I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t [happen].” Alice in Chains’ U.S. tour continues through June, before the group heads overseas this summer. But the rock act isn’t the only band from the ’90s hitting the road — this year brings news that fellow Seattle mainstays Soundgarden are also reuniting. With Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam also on tour and the Foo Fighters back in the studio, is alternative rock coming back? “I don’t think it ever left,” Cantrell said. “Yeah, there’s a lot of activity from bands that were slugging it out in the ’90s, us being one of them. But I think the thing that gets forgotten is all those guys were doing music all along. … It’s not like anyone quit doing stuff and we just thought, ‘Hey, it’s a good time to start doing it again.’ We just continued to make music. But it’s kind of nice because I love all those bands.” Cantrell doesn’t have any specific advice for Chris Cornell and company, but he did have one statement to make on the Soundgarden reunion. “I’ll buy a ticket. I want to see that.” Are you looking forward to seeing Alice in Chains on tour? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Alice in Chains

Asteroids Record Beaten

It’s a bad week for old-timey game record holders — the long-standing world record in the game Asteroids was destroyed on Monday night. Back in 1982, Scott Safran scored 41,336,440 points in Asteroids , and his record stood until Monday night when Seattle locksmith John McAllister scored 41,338,740 points on the arcade version of the game. It was a squeaker, but enough to the record to change hands. Unlike a three hour Donkey Kong kill-screen game, Asteroids records are all about endurance; it took McAllister 58 bleary-eyed hours to beat the high score, and he did it all without the aid of feathered hair or acid wash jeans. According to McAllister, “The toughest part was this morning at three o’clock, six o’clock and nine o’ clock. Three o’clock I got through pretty well; at 6 o’clock, it was a struggled, and at 9 o’clock I felt like my eyes closed a few times.” The machine McAllister was using was a vintage 1979 Asteroids machine, and it’s amazing enough that it still works. Oh, and because it’s important, McAllister signed his towering high score with the intials

Bree Tanner Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know About New ‘Twilight’ Novella

Character provides insight into Victoria’s creation of vampire army in Seattle. By Terri Schwartz “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” Photo: Little, Brown Books/ Summit Entertainment Oh my Edward. Stephenie Meyer has announced she is publishing a new book called “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner,” due in bookstores June 5 and available for free at BreeTanner.com from June 7 to July 5. The novella will act as something of a companion piece for the “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” film. But it begs the question: Who exactly is Bree Tanner? It seems a bit surprising that Meyer would choose to write a novella about a character who shows up for such a short period of time in the novels. Don’t worry about hauling out your copy of “Eclipse” to find the surprisingly few pages Tanner appears on, because we did all the dirty work for you. Here is a cheat sheet telling you everything you need to know about the short-lived Bree Tanner. An “Eclipse” Exclusive : If you’ve only been watching the “Twilight” movies or read the first two books, don’t be shocked that you have no idea who Bree Tanner is. In fact, don’t be upset if you read “Eclipse” and still have no idea who she is. Tanner is a character introduced a startlingly short amount of time before she dies in “Eclipse” and could be considered (to everyone except Stephenie Meyer) to be a throwaway character. A Short Life : Tanner is only introduced 10 pages before she is killed off in Victoria’s war against the Cullens and the Quileute werewolf tribe. However, of all the newborn vampires discussed in “Eclipse,” Tanner was one of the few to be named and introduced to the readers. Unfortunately, it didn’t take very long after she was turned into a vampire for her to meet her end … again. Dramatic Death Scene : It turns out Tanner isn’t the best newborn vampire among them all, and she isn’t a big fan of killing innocents and drinking their blood. She tries to join forces with the Cullen clan and adapt to their “vegetarian vampire” lifestyle, but ends up being killed by Felix on the orders of Jane, a member of the Volturi guard (played by Dakota Fanning in the film), in the final battle. Newborn Vampires : A big part of the story in “Eclipse” surrounds the bad-girl vampire Victoria creating an army of newborn vampires in the Seattle area so she can wage war on Edward Cullen, who killed her beau James way back in “Twilight.” When a vampire is first created, it is at its strongest, so Victoria went around recklessly creating vampires so she could have an extremely powerful army behind her. Tanner was just one of the fatalities. Seattle : The trouble with the first-person perspective of “The Twilight Saga” is that the reader can’t read what is happening firsthand beyond what Bella Swan sees with her own eyes. Much like “Midnight Sun” gave (some) of the details behind what happened elsewhere in “Twilight,” “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” will show what happened in Seattle with Victoria during “Eclipse.” But since much of “Eclipse” is devoted to the characters wondering what exactly was going on in Seattle, seeing it through the eyes of a secondary character like Tanner is a smart companion piece to the book. Unseen First Life : Unfortunately for Tanner, the world will never know what happened to her before she became a vampire. She was introduced into “Eclipse” after she was a newborn and “The Short Second Life” will start off the same way. There is a chance of flashbacks telling about her life before becoming a vampire, but the way Meyer described the novella on her Web site made it seem as though Tanner was the narrator solely so the reader could see what went on in Seattle, not to learn her past. In The Movies : “Eclipse” director David Slade at least had more of a heads-up than fans and retailers did about “The Short Second Life,” and he cast 14-year-old Jodelle Ferland in the role. Slade and Ferland, as well as Bryce Dallas Howard (Victoria) and Xavier Samuel (Riley), were given advance copies of the book to read so they could have a complete knowledge of what went on in Seattle for the film. Washington: Marijuana Legalization Gaining Momentum

By Steve Elliott at Toke of the Town “It’s an idea whose time has come,” said Douglas Hiatt, co-author of Initiative 1068, which would legalize marijuana in Washington State. And now it’s time for voters to take matters into their own hands, according to Hiatt. “This year, one in six legislators sponsored marijuana reform legislation,” the activist attorney said Tuesday at a press conference on the steps of the Capitol Building in Olympia. “And again this year, major reform did not get out of committee,” Hiatt said. “So we formed Sensible Washington and wrote an initiative that removes the criminal and civil penalties for adults.” Every poll taken shows that if I-1068 gets on the ballot, it will win. Washington voters support sensible marijuana laws. Tuesday’s press conference detailed a wide and diverse array of endorsements, from former Seattle Police Chief Norm Stamper to Republican legislator Toby Nixon. Photo:

Tiger Woods Marked Birth of First Child with Joslyn James Sex Romp

Tiger Woods celebrated the arrival of his first child, daughter Sam Alexis, by secretly meeting up with Joslyn James, according to new reports from … James. Woods flew Joslyn to the first tournament he played after wife Elin Woods gave birth back on June 18, 2007. Tiger announced then that he was taking time off. However, that same week, the golf legend had his best pal and business manager Bryon Bell coordinate a secret rendezvous with Joslyn James! Classy move. Tiger paid for Joslyn James to fly from Seattle to Washington D.C, to meet on the same weekend that he played in the AT&T National in Bethesda, Maryland. Maybe Joslyn just flew in to help with his swing mechanics? Elin Woods did not attend the tournament. Convenient. At a press conference there, Tiger Woods said: “It’s been fantastic to have Sam Alexis part of our life.” “It was a dream come true for Elin, myself and all of our family. We’ve been obviously working a little bit and a lot of late nights, but it’s been a lot of fun.” We’re sure those late nights were fun … with Joslyn . Her Tiger Woods text messages made it abundantly clear what their relationship was like … spanking, choking, golden showers, threesomes and whatnot. Dude was into some sick $h!t. No wonder that despite being just one of many mistresses, Elin Woods is said to be particularly upset about Joslyn James .
