Maureen Dowd: Obama Needs Bush’s Help On Ground Zero Mosque

Mark August 18, 2010, on your calendar as the day New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd published a piece bashing Barack Obama and praising George W. Bush. This comes less than 24 hours after CNN.com did exactly the same thing over the same issue. Needless to say, Dowd’s position in her column entitled “Our Mosque Madness” went completely contrary to public opinion regarding the building of an Islamic center at Ground Zero. But before we get there, let’s first take a look at a few paragraphs destined to give many readers whiplash as they slam on their reading brakes in disbelief: The war against the terrorists is not a war against Islam. In fact, you can’t have an effective war against the terrorists if it is a war on Islam. George W. Bush understood this. And it is odd to see Barack Obama less clear about this matter than his predecessor. It’s time for W. to weigh in. This – along with immigration reform and AIDS in Africa – was one of his points of light. As the man who twice went to war in the Muslim world, he has something of an obligation to add his anti-Islamophobia to this mosque madness. W. needs to get his bullhorn back out. And it is odd to see Barack Obama less clear about this matter than his predecessor. It’s time for W. to weigh in. Actually, what’s odd to see is this liberal stalwart bashing an unabashedly liberal President – maybe the most liberal President America has ever seen! – while praising the object of her disaffection in the very same paragraph. Forgive me – I’ve got to take a few moments to compose myself. After all, didn’t Dowd just three days prior tear into Obama’s left-leaning critics – including MSNBCers with rare unkind words for the current White House resident! – for having the nerve to speak ill of the leader of the growing less and less free world? Now in roughly 72 hours, this same woman is so disappointed in her hero that she excoriated him with the ultimate dissing: even W understands this issue better than you! That could leave a scar that will only come out with serious counseling. Of course, readers shouldn’t get giddy over the President being humiliated by a fan, for Dowd had a larger point:  Have any of the screaming critics noticed that there already are two mosques in the same neighborhood – one four blocks away and one 12 blocks away. Should they be dismantled? And what about the louche liquor stores and strip clubs in the periphery of the sacred ground? By now you have to be willfully blind not to know that the imam in charge of the project, Feisal Abdul Rauf, is the moderate Muslim we have allegedly been yearning for. As I’m still recovering from the W is better than O at something remark, let me bring in Commentary’s Jennifer Rubin to assist in tearing apart this inanity: Uh, not really. We’re yearning for a Muslim who specifically condemns Hamas as a terrorist group and doesn’t suggest that the U.S. is responsible for 9/11. We’re yearning for a Muslim who doesn’t use “hallowed ground” – where 3,000 Americans died at the hands of Islamist extremists – to build a “a symbol of victory for militant Muslims around the world.” ( That from an American Muslim whose mother was incinerated on 9/11 by those who “believed that all non-Muslims are infidels and that the duty of Muslims is to renounce them.”) We’re yearning for a Muslim who is “desperate to reform his faith” and forthright in his assessment that the placement of the mosque at Ground Zero is based on “a belief that Islamic structures are a political statement and even Ground Zero should be looked upon through the lens of political Islam and not a solely American one.” (That from a Muslim and former U.S. Navy officer.)  So much for Maureen’s moderate Muslim moniker. But let’s allow that to pass for a moment, as what seems more interesting than her typically errant banter about this so-called religion of peace was that Dowd wasn’t the only liberal columnist to suggest in the past few days that Obama needs help on this issue from Bush. As Byron York wrote Wednesday at the Washington Examiner, this appears to be a strain being caught by others: Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson is also looking for an assist from Bush. “I…would love to hear from former President Bush on this issue,” Robinson wrote Tuesday in a Post chat session. And Peter Beinart, a former editor of the New Republic, is also feeling some nostalgia for the former president. “Words I never thought I’d write: I pine for George W. Bush,” Beinart wrote Tuesday in The Daily Beast. “Whatever his flaws, the man respected religion, all religion.” For the moment, with Obama failing to live up to expectations, Bush-bashing is over. It’s all a little amusing — and perhaps a little maddening — for some members of the Bush circle. When I asked Karl Rove to comment, he responded that it means “redemption is always available for liberals and time causes even the most stubborn of ideologues to revisit mistaken judgments.” But won’t these Bush critics shortly return to criticizing Bush? “This Bush swoon by selected members of the left commentariat is temporary,” Rove answered. “Their swamp fevers will return momentarily.” Well, if it doesn’t, liberals can rest assured the Obama administration is working on a vaccine it hopes will be far more effective at preventing this malady than the one it forced upon Americans to fend off the dreaded swine flu.

Feminist Bloggers/Journalists Offended When Dallas Police Chief Suggests Preventative Measures Against Date Rape

A startling statistic was presented at the August 2 Dallas Public Safety Committee meeting: Rape there is up 25.3% over last year. Police Chief David Brown (pictured right) was pressed on this, and here was how blogger Andrea Grimes of the Dallas Observer interpreted his remarks: But Ms. Jasso read my mind, asking the Chief to explain the… increase…. is it that victims are reporting rapes more frequently, or that more rapes are happening? The answer, unfortunately: More rapes, says Chief Brown, specifically date rapes. And we all know what the solution to date rape is: getting women to stop drinking, because that is what causes date rape. Not dudes raping women, but women drinking. Blogger Shelby Knox piled on : Thank you law enforcement official charged with preventing or at least condemning crimes like, oh say, RAPE for suggesting that if I get raped it’s my fault…. Guess I should leave the short skirt at home too, right Chief? Men of Dallas: Your Chief of Police doesn’t seem to think you possess enough self-control or self-respect to resist violating a woman who’s been drinking. Be offended by this and be part of the solution. You watch your friends and remind them that if a woman is too drunk to say ‘yes,’ she’s too drunk for sex. Women of Dallas: Rape is rape is rape. If you were raped while drunk it doesn’t make it your fault or any less of a crime. And Bethany Anderson at D magazine added : So date rape solved? Don’t drink if you have two x chromosomes. Forget the fact that the drunk cannot consent to sex, and nonconsensual sex = rape. I’m sure glad we cleared that up. But wait a minute. Would a high profile modern man be so stupid as to place the fault of rape on women? Scott Goldstein at the Dallas Morning News was the 1st to challenge the stereotypical and stereotypist feminist mob: Some writers at a couple of local Dallas publications are accusing… Brown of essentially blaming rape victims in comments he made during a City Hall committee meeting yesterday…. No need for me to judge whether the folks at D magazine and the Dallas Observer are being unfairly provocative. You be the judge. Watch the video clip and tell us what you think. Yes… Liberal feminists are often caricatured as over reactive, and here was just another example of the Birkenstock fitting. Fortunately, and surprisingly given this touchy subject, there was immediate blowback. Goldstein wrote in follow-up: Brown… was unaware of the way some bloggers are portraying [his] comments…. I filled him in and asked him to respond. “I absolutely did not state that the victims are to blame for sexual assault,” Brown said. He said that he was explaining yesterday that a DPD analysis of the increase shows that many of the cases involve alcohol and date rape. “I do want to continue to emphasize that women be aware of their surroundings and, when possible, travel in pairs or in a group to enhance security around sexual assault,” Brown said. Speaking specifically about the way some have characterized his comments, Brown said: “I just think it’s irresponsible for bloggers to put inaccurate information in reports to excite or to create this uproar that is not consistent with my statement,” Brown said. “They’re being irresponsible. This is a very sensitive issue and we really do want to make victims aware of how to protect themselves from these predators.” Commenters proceeded to take Anderson to task … “I know it’s cool to suddenly be playing gender-centric neo-1970s games regarding what people actually say vs. how others claim they spoke… or even to interpret what they meant. But to me, hanging people out to dry, with an agitator’s agenda being the motivation to twist and shout, that’s every bit as shocking as the Chief’s ‘summarized’ comment in question here….” Guess i’ll be the contrarian here, i don’t see anything about drinking causing rape in his quote. What i see is a suggestion for friends to keep an eye on each other when they’re out partying, something guys do all the time. If you’re friend isn’t acting herself, maybe it’s because something was slipped in her drink, a friend would probably be able to notice something like that if they were keeping an eye on one another when out partying.” … to such an extent Anderson had to perform a mea culpa, “of sorts” … After listening to the video of Chief Brown, and reviewing his statement about how his comments were taken, I’ve done some thinking. Yes, you get more of an idea of what he was getting at, and it confirmed my gut reaction: He meant well…. If I had been at the meeting, or watching it, I admit, my response would’ve been more measured… I do think that the resulting discussion was, by the whole, a good leaping off point for exactly the sort of thing Chief Brown said we needed – more preventive measures…. Really? What Brown was saying in the first place? I know it’s verboten to say women, particularly young women in bars, ask for it when they get raped. But as we saw in this instance, it’s to the point where liberal feminists aren’t even allowing women to be educated on common sense preventative measures. Why is there a 25% increase in rape this past year in Dallas? Is it that there are more perpetrators on the street or more naive victims? I think it’s a combination of both, the former thanks in large part to another verboten topic, increasing access to porn, and the latter because liberal feminists have created an environment that makes it nearly impossible to discuss preemptive measures women can take to stop it. I look back to many instances when I did stupid things that opened the door to crime, such as picking up male hitchhikers. As recently as last week I walked through a large, dark parking lot at O’Hare Airport alone to my car at 11:30p at night. I should have asked Security for a ride. Liberal feminists don’t like it, but the simple fact is the bar scene, particularly late at night, isn’t necessarily safe. There aren’t a lot of date rapes in church. [Photo via CBS News ]

Katy Perry Crashes Australian Prom

Perry sings ‘California Gurls’ for a group of Australian high school students at their formal dance. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Ross Gilmore/Getty Images Katy Perry loves a good party . Who could forget her celeb-filled, Willy Wonka-themed birthday party last October? So, when Perry came across students celebrating their prom during a recent trip to Australia, the “California Gurls” singer decided to embrace her inner teenage dream and crash their party. According to Radar Online , Perry got her groove on at the Melbourne High School formal at the Grand Hyatt on Friday night. It happened to be the same hotel that Perry was staying at during her time Down Under. One student, Stefan Uzelac, told the website that Perry made her way into the party when she heard “California Gurls” playing, grabbed a microphone and started singing along. “It was towards the end of the night and everyone was having a good time,” Uzelac said. “Then Katy Perry decides to walk in and crash our formal!” “She appeared slightly drunk and was stumbling a little,” another student added about the 10 minutes that Perry spent at the party. “As she grabbed the microphone, she was surrounded by highly excited students and began singing along with the soundtrack. She was dancing and laughing with students until the end of the song when she was subtly whisked away by her security guards. Everyone went nuts and it was the perfect ending to our evening.” In a photo posted on Radar, Perry is seen wearing a black-and-white top and singing into a microphone surrounded by the prom revelers. Aceshowbiz.com reported that Perry also danced and sang along to Beyonc

Lady Gaga’s Half Naked Crowd Surfing of the DAy

This is the kinda shit that makes paying 100 dollars for some outdoor festival seem like a serious waste of fucking money. It’s like you get to the show, you get drunk, you get into the whole thing, and next thing you know, some half naked ugly chick who may have a dick gets thrown at your fucking head…sure you are given every opportunity to shove your finger up her sweaty and disgusting ass, but you don’t have that much time to react cuz you’re distracted by wiping the it off your fucking face…. A little known fact about me is that I have fondled Gaga’s ass. This is a totally true story that happened last year and that was not one of my prouder moments…but basically she was wearing a similar outfit, she had bodyguards around her, she was dancing on a booth with Perez Hilton and I snuck my hand around the security and started fondling her ass for what felt like 3 hours and 20 minutes, but was probably a minute. She didn’t notice…but despite what I was expecting, it was actually firm and I guess that was my brush with fame before it was really famous that wasn’t as good as the night I spent with Lohan and that’s all I have to say about that. She is so fucking full of shit….this is all a lie and here are some of the disgusting fucking pics…. Here’s the horrible video….

ABC’s Cokie Roberts Defends Michelle Obama’s Spanish Vacation: ‘What Real Difference Does It Make?’

Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos and Cokie Roberts on Monday downplayed the potential bad PR Michelle Obama might suffer for taking a Spanish vacation costing a quarter million dollars during bad economic times. Roberts justified, ” But in the grand scheme of things, what real difference does it make? I would guess that Sasha is probably learning some Spanish. ” Continuing to spin the First Lady’s vacation, she argued, ” We need Spain to be stronger economically than it is in the Euro zone. I mean, you can make the case if you really need to.” Co-host George Stephanopoulos searched for reassurance that the visit wouldn’t have negative ramifications: But you don’t think it’s going to be that big a deal? They just fade the heat and move on.” Yet, when Laura Bush introduced new White House china just prior to leaving the White House in January 2009 , co-host Robin Roberts called it a “brewing brouhaha.” Reporter Ann Compton worried, “So, why is Laura Bush introducing new Bush china two weeks before they move out?” In a segment airing just before the conversation between Roberts and Stephanopoulos, reporter Yunji did hit some tough facts: “The bad PR comes at a time when the White House could use good news. We learned Friday that the economy lost 131,000 jobs last month. The President’s approval rating is at 41 percent, his lowest ever.” She also noted, “This girls’ getaway wasn’t cheap. These hotel rooms run from $400 to nearly $7,000 a night. The White House says the Obamas paid their own way, but their security is covered by American taxpayers.” De Nies’ report on Monday was in contrast to her piece on Friday . For that segment, she lauded the ‘luxurious’ vacation and made no mention of possible controversy. A transcript of the August 9 segment, which aired at 7:17am EDT, follows: STEPHANOPOULOS: Okay. And for more on this, we’re joined by our friend Cokie Roberts in Washington. And, Cokie, thanks for coming in this morning. You heard Yunji saying the White House hopes is hoping this is going to blow over. But, they probably could have seen this criticism coming. COKIE ROBERTS: Sure they could have. And they probably did and decided to go anyway. You know, politically, it was not a smart move. But in the grand scheme of things, what real difference does it make? I would guess that Sasha is probably learning some Spanish. Maybe she learned Spanish on her trip. You know, the fact is, Spain could use help, too. We need Spain to be stronger economically than it is in the Euro zone. I mean, you can make the case if you really need to. STEPHANOPOULOS: But you don’t think it’s going to be that big a deal? They just fade the heat and move on. And it does seem that that sentiment did take hold. ROBERTS: I think that’s exactly right. Look, the President’s in trouble with the voters because of the economy. And whatever the First Lady does is not going to make any difference one way or the other. And, you know, she did go with her child. It was not like a Jackie O trip, you know, where she was sort of wiling away her time on a yacht. STEPHANOPOULOS: Aristotle Onassis’ yacht. That’s exactly right. And it does come- the irony, it comes at a time when the First Lady actually has very high approval ratings in great demand on the campaign trail. The Democratic Senate candidate in Pennsylvania, Joe Sestak, says “I’d rather have her than the President.” ROBERTS: Well, because she’s not responsible for the economy so she doesn’t take the same heat. And that’s traditionally true for first ladies. She’s very much in the path of other first ladies who have come before her. And people like these women because they do go out and do good. And have causes that everybody can get behind. STEPHANOPOULOS: You know, Congress is out for the summer, but there’s another big primary tomorrow in Colorado, which is kind of interesting because it’s a classic case, and both Republican and Democratic side, establishment candidates facing a real challenge from the outsiders. ROBERTS: Right. Michael Bennet, the sitting senator, one of the several appointed senators in trouble this year in an election bid is backed by the White House. The President calls him a breath of fresh air in Washington, a city full of hot air. But his opponent, Andrew Romanoff, is backed by Bill Clinton. And, so you’ve got a real battle of endorsements going on there. And on the Republican side, you have Ken Buck, who is a Tea Party candidate, against former Lieutenant Governor Jane Norton who has John McCain behind her. And the governor of Arizona, the controversial governor of Arizona, behind her. But, she’s having a lot of trouble from Ken Buck who says, at least he doesn’t wear high-heels. How that goes with voters, I don’t know. STEPHANOPOULOS: Not a bad line. We’ll see if it’s another day for outsiders. Cokie Roberts, thanks very much.

SEC Claims Information Opacity, But Media No Longer So Concerned With Transparency

It seems that not even the truth can possibly overturn the narrative that President Obama and the Democrats in Congress have brought transparency to Washington. Last Wednesday I wrote about how the Dodd-Frank financial regulatory bill Obama signed into law last month contains a provision exempting the Securities and Exchange Commission from Freedom of Information Act requests. Such an exemption would surely have been grounds for a media outcry during the Bush administration, yet apart from The Wall Street Journal and CNN, only blogs have been following the developments. The latter opted simply to parrot the administration’s claims without challenge. Other media ouetlets, such as National Public Radio and MSNBC, completely ignored the controversy, in stark contrast to their extensive coverage of the Bush administration’s attempts to curtail the scope of the Freedom of Information Act. NPR’s Don Gonyea said “When conflicts arise over what should or should not be open, the administration does not hesitate to invoke the memory of 9/11. And while it’s true that 9/11 changed the security landscape, it’s also true that the administration was tightening the control of information much earlier . . .” Some journalists are simply accepting the official SEC double-talk at face value. Unlike The Wall Street Journal , which actually bothered to talk to people familiar with the SEC and the bill, CNN just repeated what Chairwoman Mary Schapiro said in her letters, starting off their story with: “The Securities and Exchange Commission was not seeking a blanket exemption from public information laws . . .” Contrast this “see no evil” approach with CNN’s coverage of similar controversies during the Bush administration. In August of 2007, CNN’s Jack Cafferty covered the Bush administration’s attempt to exempt the White House Office of Administration from FOIA, noting the administration’s claims that certain federal officers were exempt from the law. “What do you suppose is in the millions of missing White House e-mails that President Bush doesn’t want anyone to see?” Cafferty asked, rhetorically. And in March of 2004, CNN analyst Ron Brownstein hammered home the alleged lack of transparency in the Bush administration, as evinced by its stance on FOIA. “They’re [the Bush administration] very tough on executive privilege in general, and on the flow of information more broadly than that,” Brownstein claimed. “Everything from the Freedom of Information Act to the Cheney Commission on Energy.” But with Obama in office, CNN doesn’t seem to be particularly concerned about the SEC’s apparent disdain for transparency. All it’s doing is reprinting talking points, after all. MSNBC, another news outlet that has yet to devote a single word to the SEC exemption, was also far more concerned with openness during the previous administration. Mike Barnicle, guest-hosting Hardball in 2007, said in reference to Bush’s Office of Administration: “The White House says the Freedom of Information act doesn’t apply to the office that handles their e-mails, even though their Web site says it does. Are they breaking the law?” Meanwhile, Rachel Maddow claimed on the day after Obama’s inauguration that secrecy was “the hallmark of the Bush years, the thing that often made Bush administration law-breaking possible because nobody knew it was happening. The best tool that we, the people, have to break through government secrecy is often the Freedom of Information Act. It was treated as an annoyance, an obstacle to be overcome by the Bush administration.” Again, these are a concerns this cable network has yet to extend to the SEC. Chairwoman Schapiro has written letters to Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Ct) and Rep. Barney Frank (D-Ma) explaining that the law doesn’t really exempt them from responding to FOIA requests. She asserted that entities regulated by her agency under the new financial “reform” legislation must “be able to provide us with access to confidential information without concern that the information will later be made public.” Schapiro claimed in her letter that the provisions in question are “not designed to protect the SEC as an agency from public oversight and accountability.” The mainstream press has apparently decided to take her word for it. How nice of them. It’s not like federal bureaucrats have ever failed to follow their agency’s guidelines . . . This press’s attitude, of course, stands in sharp contrast to just a few years ago, when members of the media were outraged by Republican attempts to restrict FOIA requests. Many in the media have, like NPR, decried the Bush administration’s use of 9/11 to curtail transparency, but thus far no one has criticized the current administration’s use of financial reform for the same goals. The double standard is telling.

Drake ‘Good Morning America’ Concert Falls Through

Cast of Broadway’s ‘American Idiot’ will perform July 16 instead. By Mawuse Ziegbe Drake Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage Another Drake show in New York has been nixed before the rapper even got a chance to take the stage. Drizzy was in talks to play a free outdoor show July 16 as part of ABC’s “Good Morning America” summer concert series. However, the Drake show has been squashed and the cast of Broadway’s “American Idiot” will fill the upcoming slot instead. A spokesperson for ABC confirmed that a potential Drake show was in the works. “We were interested in having Drake perform, but he was never officially booked,” an ABC rep told MTV News. In addition, a spokesperson for the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation told MTV News that concert organizers had simply decided to go with another act. “There was an open date on the calendar for July 16, but they decided to feature the cast of the Broadway show ‘American Idiot,’ ” a rep said. A rep for Drizzy also told the New York Daily News that there was a “booking in place” but did not offer any additional details. Reports have surfaced indicating that safety might have been a factor in passing on Drizzy for a “GMA” appearance. According to the Daily News, the New York City Police Department pulled the plug on the planned show after the city’s parks department failed to provide the security that the NYPD deemed necessary for such an event. The parks department spokesperson did not confirm whether security issues were a factor in not moving forward with the Drake show. The news comes in the wake of a Drake concert in NYC that was canceled June 15 when thousands of fans unexpectedly showed up. Drizzy was expected to perform a free show at New York’s South Street Seaport (pop group Hanson were also on the bill ), but the NYPD put the kibosh on the concert after roughly 10,000 fans swarmed the event. Days later, Jay-Z also ran into issues mounting a concert on top of the marquee of New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater for an appearance on the “Late Show With David Letterman.” City officials axed the surprise concert once fans got wind of the show beforehand. However, Jigga — joined by Eminem — ultimately finagled an outdoor appearance and performed on the building’s roof . The MCs didn’t need a permit to rock out on the roof since it is private property. Are you bummed that Drake won’t be on “Good Morning America”? Let us know in the comments. The Death of Michael Jackson: One Year Later

Michael Jackson passed away a year ago today. He was 50. The year that followed has marked a celebration of his life, invigorating legions of fans old and new. The past 12 months have also made clear that his life was as unusual as his career was successful. Personally and professionally, the icon truly had no peers. Only Lady Gaga topped Michael Jackson in albums sold in 2009, an indication of his legacy. But the tragic, bizarre details of his demise are equally noteworthy. On top of the immediate causes of his death, and the role of Dr. Conrad Murray, are lingering questions about how a star so bright fell so far from his past glory. When it comes to Michael Jackson, truth is stranger than fiction. Here’s a look back at some of the scandals and stories THG has covered since June 25, 2009: R.I.P. Michael Jackson (1958-2009) . June 26, 2009 : The coroner rules there was no foul play. More than six months later, however, Dr. Conrad Murray would face involuntary manslaughter charges. June 30, 2009 : Tabloids first report that Jackson’s friend, Dr. Arnold Klein, is actually the biological father of his two older children, Prince and Paris Jackson. July 6, 2009 : On the eve of Jackson’s memorial service, U.S. Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) decries society for glorifying MJ, who he calls a pedophile child molester. July 8, 2009 : Bill O’Reilly likens Michael to O.J. Simpson. July 13, 2009 : La Toya Jackson says MJ was murdered. July 17, 2009 : Tabloids report that Paris, Prince and Blanket want Michael’s sister to raise them, and that Norway dancer Omer Bhatti is Michael’s “secret son.” July 24, 2009 : Investigators formally begin looking into Dr. Murray’s actions, specifically whether he injected Michael with the powerful anesthetic Propofol. July 27, 2009 : Omer Bhatti’s mom may also be Blanket’s mom; Kai Chase and Grace Rwaramba both give interviews regarding the late singer’s final days. August 1, 2009 : Debbie Rowe, the mother of Paris and Prince, is not involved at all. But she’s the subject of so many bogus rumors, she files huge lawsuits. August 9, 2009 : Michael’s friend Mark Lester says he might be Paris’ dad. August 24, 2009 : Prince Michael Malachi Jet Jackson claims he’s MJ’s son. August 31, 2009 : Blanket’s mother is now rumored to be an unnamed Mexican nurse named Helena, and his father is rumored to be Macaulay Culkin. September 2, 2009 : Paris gets a haircut; Security collects DNA evidence. October 22, 2009 : Numerous parties, including Michael’s shady father Joe, question the legal validity of the singer’s will, which is nevertheless ruled valid. October 28, 2009 : Michael Jackson’s This Is It , a documentary of rehearsal footage of the superstar preparing for a tour that never was, his theaters. November 1, 2009 : An alleged autopsy photo is leaked, its validity questionable. Michael and Janet Jackson were very close . November 18, 2009 : Janet Jackson gives her first interviews since her brother died, saying her family was not naive and tried to intervene many times. December 22, 2009 : Jackson’s FBI file is released, and as weird as you think. January 8, 2010: The LAPD concludes its investigation into Jackson’s death. February 1, 2010: The Grammy Awards honor Michael, with Prince, Paris and Blanket on hand to receive an award on his behalf and make him proud. February 2, 2010: Murray is officially charged with involuntary manslaughter. February 8, 2010: Katherine Jackson calls Murray a monster and says MJ’s death was not natural; Joe and La Toya say the charges aren’t enough. February 9, 2010: Michael’s autopsy is released, and as weird as you think. February 17, 2010: The timeline of Michael Jackson’s death becomes a point of contention between the prosecution and Dr. Conrad Murray’s defense. March 2, 2010 : One of Jermaine Jackson’s kids, also living under the roof of Katherine Jackson, buys a stun gun and tries to taser poor little Blanket. March 15, 2010: Omer Bhatti reportedly tells Michael’s kids that HE is their father now; Other reports circulate that the kids are living in utter chaos. April 4, 2010: Murray’s defense strategy is outlined, and fairly simple: Michael Jackson killed himself with Propofol when Murray left to use the can. BAD DOC : Will Conrad Murray be held accountable? April 7, 2010 : Murray reportedly refuses a plea deal, claiming that Jackson was an addict who would “push the line” and do anything to get his way. May 3, 2010 : Jason Pfeiffer alleges a gay affair with Michael Jackson; Arnold Klein backs him up; Both face death threats and widespread ridicule. May 14, 2010 : Elizabeth Taylor defends her old friend, lambasting Klein. June 14, 2010 : Joe Jackson blames Katherine for Michael’s death, while also filing a lawsuit against promoter AEG for pushing his son too hard. June 21, 2010 : Katherine, the children’s legal guardian, says they have no friends, but are going to a real school this fall, and are generally happy. June 23, 2010 : Joe claims Conrad Murray was drinking at a strip club before treating Michael on that fateful day; The doc calls this pure nonsense.

Brzezinski: Invite Iran To Conference On Afghanistan’s Future

Great idea.  While we’re at it, let’s invite al Qaeda to a conference on Israel’s future . . . On Morning Joe today, Zbigniew Brzezinski recommended that the US organize an “international conference” on Afghanistan’s future—and invite Iran to participate. The former Carter National Security Advisor didn’t say what positive contribution he might expect from a country working in defiance of international sanctions to develop nuclear weapons and that has stated its desire to wipe Israel off the map.  ZBIGNIEW BRZEZINSKI:  I think we have to have some sort of an international conference drawing in the neighbors of Afghanistan into the process regarding the future of Afghanistan.  That means, among others, the Iranians. So, there are a number of things we need to do, difficult as they are, to achieve the objectives the president has set for himself. Zbig’s daughter Mika could be heard uttering a [quizzical?] “hmm” in response.  Will any of the MSM pick up on Brzezinski’s suggestion?  Might Pres. Obama take a cue from Carter’s man?

Raising Water Productivity to Increase Food Security

Image credit: stevendepolo /Flickr With water shortages constraining food production growth, the world needs an effort to raise water productivity similar to the one that nearly tripled land productivity over the last half-century. Since it takes 1,000 tons of water to produce 1 ton of grain, it is not surprising that 70 percent of world water use is devoted to irrigation. Thus, raising irrigation efficiency is central to raising water productivity overall. … Read the full story on TreeHugger
