Kurt Budke, Oklahoma State Women’s Basketball Coach, Killed in Plane Crash With Three Others

Oklahoma State head women’s basketball coach Kurt Budke and Miranda Serna, one of his assistant coaches, have died in a plane crash along with two others. Their tragic deaths happened just 10 months after the school marked the 10th anniversary of a crash that killed 10 men associated with the men’s program. The plane went down Thursday night in Perry County, Ark., killing the pilot and another individual not affiliated with the university, Oklahoma State said. No one survived the crash. Kurt Budke, 50, had opened his seventh season as the Cowgirls’ coach on Sunday with a 96-60 win over Rice in a home game in Stillwater, Oklahoma. “The entire Oklahoma State family is devastated by this tragedy,” University President Burns Hargis said Friday in a statement. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of Kurt Budke, Miranda Serna and the other victims.” “Kurt Budke was an incredibly positive influence on his players and a tremendous coach. He quickly turned our program around and put Cowgirl basketball on the map.” Associate head coach Jim Littell will take over as interim head coach, though the school canceled the team’s games scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. The Cowboys’ college football team, currently ranked second in the nation, plays Friday night at Iowa State. That game will be played as scheduled. Our condolences go out to the families and friends of the deceased.

Tyler Perry Defends Kim Kardashian Kasting as "Responsible"

Kim Kardashian has been cast in a Tyler Perry movie titled The Marriage Counselor . Even if she isn’t playing the title role, come on, that’s hilarious. But not to the mega producer himself. He doesn’t really get the humor behind this selection, even after Kim filed for divorce 72 days after wedding Kris Humphries. And even though, you know, she cannot act. “She literally has millions of young people following her,” Perry wrote on his official website. “I thought and still do think, that it would be very responsible of her to be a part of this film… If one of those young people see this film and find the strength to live a better life and not go through what these characters went through in this movie, then we have all done what I feel I’m being led to do here.” Decent point, Ty. But do those followers really need Kim to star in a movie in order to use her life story as a cautionary tale? Asked Perry: “Because I believe that my films speak from the inside out, why wouldn’t Kim Kardashian be invited into a film about Faith, Forgiveness and the healing power of God?” We’re just guessing here… but maybe because she has no soul? Freida Pinto Admits: That’s Not My Butt in Immortals

For skin fans praying that tall, sexy drink of water Freida Pinto would finally let those Pinto beans out of her tunic in the mythological action flick Immortals (2011)- your prayers have been answered. Sort of. Freida’s character , the demi-goddess Phaedra , does bare right breast and butt getting it on with mythic hero Theseus ( Henry Cavill ) 57 minutes in. But that tasty brown backside you see isn’t Freida’s- it’s a textbook case of a body double (notice how her face and butt are never in the same shot). Freida even admits to using a butt double for the scene, telling E! Online : “It wasn’t really my butt. It was a butt double. I’m relieved I don’t have to deal with that issue.” The gods can be so cruel. Want to see some Greek gazongas and Roman rackage? Casey Abrams Goes Back to Nature, Boy

“It’s hard to find a song that defines me as an artist.” – Casey Abrams These American Idol kids are getting frisky. Like James Durbin , Casey butted heads a bit with producer Jimmy Iovine regarding his selection Wednesday. Jimmy nearly talked Abrams into doing Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight,” but he went with his gut and that meant channeling a little Nat King Cole. Iovine wasn’t pleased, but the judges give a standing ovation after a intimate, stripped down performance that Casey really put his heart and soul into. Whether “Nature Boy” defines him as an artist remains to be seen. But Abrams fans surely loved this and many people on the fence likely did, too … Casey Abrams – Nature Boy (American Idol) Was it the best of the night? If not, who was? Vote after the jump:

Linkin Park? U2? Ke$ha? Behind MTV’s Musical March Madness Selection

With the tipoff of our tournament set for Monday, Bigger Than the Sound breaks down your favorite band’s chances of busting the bracket. By James Montgomery Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington Photo: Frank Hoensch/ Getty Images Last year, when we launched the inaugural Musical March Madness tournament, we did it largely on a whim. As I wrote when I revealed my original (handwritten) bracket , the basic idea was to combine my love of college basketball, gambling and rock music (and superfluous lists) into one magical event, and it really didn’t matter that I hadn’t figured out how bands would advance in the tournament or even what they’d get for winning. All I knew was that it seemed like a fun idea (especially since I didn’t have anything else to write my column about that week) and that somewhere, there had to be someone who cared about these seemingly disparate things nearly as much as I did. As it turned out, there were a lot of people who cared, and when it was all said and done — thanks to the efforts of a whole lot of folks, including Newsroom blog editor Kyle Anderson, who basically decided “You know what? People should vote on this!” — not only was Musical March Madness a certified success, but we somehow even managed to get an actual trophy to present to the winners, Coheed and Cambria , too. So, really, everybody won. Of course, given the success of the original MMM, attention quickly shifted to the 2011 tournament. Last year, I basically just threw together a list of 64 bands (65, actually; who could forget the epic Against Me!/ Creed play-in battle?). For the 2011 tournament, however, I did research, monitored album sales and basically became a Selection Committee of one. And, yes, it took way longer than I ever could have imagined. So, with the 2011 Musical March Madness set to tip off Monday — when we reveal our full bracket of 64 bands and launch voting in first-round matchups — I decided to pull back the curtain on that selection process. Some teams have all but locked up their spots in the 2011 tournament, while others still have some work to do. In the spirit of all things bracketological, here’s my up-to-the-minute look at where your favorite bands stand for this year’s MMM: The #1 Seeds The biggest bands in the land. Last year, I gave out #1’s to Nickelback, Coldplay, Blink-182 and the Kings of Leon. Somewhat surprisingly, three-quarters of them ended up losing in the opening round of the tournament (only Blink survived, making it to the round of 32 before losing to 30 Seconds to Mars). Obviously, I overestimated the popularity of some of those acts, which means that, in 2011, to be a #1 seed, you have to have proven yourself as not only a rock-solid commodity, but an actual threat to win the championship too. Oh, and it wouldn’t hurt to have an album either in stores or coming soon. So here are my latest contenders for top seeds:

Jennifer Lopez Explains American Idol Breakdown

Jennifer Lopez lost it on American Idol last night. She barely got through the elimination of beloved Chris Medina before breaking down in front of Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler, afraid she didn’t handle the news well and simply sad to see Medina go. Jennifer Lopez Breaks Down on American Idol “After he left, it really hit me. I just couldn’t believe that I had to deliver this news to this person who I felt had been through a lot and is going through a lot,” Lopez told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show this afternoon. “I felt like I didn’t do it well enough for him, to send him where he needed to go in his life and be okay. I didn’t want to be part of that.” As for how Medina handled it? “With so much dignity and so much class,” J. Lo said. Regarding the selection of the top 24 , Lopez understands that it plays a major role in future viewership. “I think if we do a good job right now, people will tune in later and I think we’re doing a good job right now. We’re being honest, we’re being real, we’ve having fun and I think that’s all we have to do.”

REVIEW: Sofia Coppola Brings a Delicate Touch, and Sure-Handed Precision, to Somewhere

Some of those who have already written about Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere have categorized it, in a kind of lazy shorthand, as a movie about the “emptiness of celebrity.” But Somewhere is really a Western — a Western without cactuses or rocks or horses, but one that, even so, takes place under a special kind of sunlight found only in L.A., in an environment that’s wild and ruthless under its veneer of civilization. The character of the land means everything in Somewhere : Wide boulevards lined with palm trees make for an illusory endless frontier; giant billboards advertise nothing in particular — they’re big because they can be. This is a place where you can lose your way without even taking a wrong turn, and sure enough, the hero of this particular story is a man who has temporarily lost himself. Still, the city’s beauty — either sitting in plain sight under the sizzling noon sun or semi-hidden in the dusk — is peculiar and specific and alluring. L.A. — and the idea of Hollywood, if not the actual neighborhood — is heartless and fabulous. It’s a place to really be a man — or not.
