‘Within that 20 to 30 seconds, somebody hopped in my car and drove off,’ Best New Artist nominee reveals. By Kara Warner Big Sean Photo: MTV News Rising star and Best New Artist VMA nominee Big Sean might be riding high these days, but in the new episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV, the G.O.O.D. Music MC reveals a not-so-starry moment from his teens. “When I was 17, I got a brand-new 2005 Chevy Impala. I was one of the only people with a new car so I was definitely enjoying it, having fun,” Sean recalled. “One day outside my house, you know sometimes when you’re blocked in, you have to move cars out the driveway and move them back in? I was just trying to hurry up and do it, so I left my car running, hopped out my and car hopped into another car to pull it into the driveway,” he explained. “Within that 20 to 30 seconds, somebody hopped in my car and drove off. I’m like ‘Mom! Mom! Mom! Somebody stole my car!’ I was thinking, ‘Damn, I f—-d up.’ ” The Detroit native said that he and his mother called the police, but due to the number of carjackings in the area, their request wasn’t considered a high priority. “I had a tracking device on my car,” Sean said. “And we still couldn’t find my car.” One 2005 Chevy Impala aside, the “Finally Famous” lyricist hasn’t experienced the loss of any other prized possessions. For now he is focused on his music, and his first-ever VMA nomination. “Man, I was hype as hell,” Sean told MTV News upon learning of his nomination for Best New Artist . “I called my mom at like midnight. I was in Charlotte [North Carolina] the night when I found out, and I called my mom and I woke her up,” he revealed. “I’m excited. Hopefully, it’s gonna be a good night.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring VMA nominees Big Sean, Tyler, the Creator, and Kreayshawn — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. In 2008, my friend and I were on Youtube just looking around at random videos when we came across this video of a kid singing ‘With You’ by Chris Brown. We thought, “Oh he’s cute” so we clicked on it and he was AMAZING. I subscribed and kept up with his videos from that day on. A little over a year later in 2009 he was doing radio appearances and I heard on the radio, “Justin Bieber will be here July 20th”. I thought for a while of who Justin Bieber was and then it hit me, “Oh he’s the kid that was singing With You.” I called my friend and asked if she wanted to go to the radio station and try to meet him. A week before we were supposed to go to the radio station, Justin released his single One Time. We listened to the song over and over again and when July 20th came we woke up at 5AM to drive an hour and a half to meet him. Of course we got lost of the way and it took much longer than expected but we finally arrived there at around 6:30 AM. We stood outside the glass window just staring in at Justin, watching him do the interview and sing One Time for us. At about 8 AM, he finally came out to greet the fans that were outside. There was only about 20 people there so for him to greet the fans definitely wasn’t a problem. It became my turn in line, he signed this paper that the people gave us for him to sign and I took a picture with him. Also I asked for a hug. Since I was the last one in line, I asked him to sign my ipod and he said “sure” so he did so. I said bye and left. But things will heat up even before those stars take the stage thanks to Selena Gomez , who has been tapped to kick off the night’s festivities as the celebrity host on the pre-show black carpet. The platinum recording artist and Emmy Award-winning actress will anchor the pre-show on Sunday, August 28, starting at 8 p.m. (live Eastern Time/ tape-delayed Pacific Time), reporting on breaking news and interviewing her peers alongside MTV’s team of correspondents, including Sway Calloway, Jim Cantiello and James Montgomery. “I am very excited to be a part of the 2011 VMAs! After all of my years watching the VMAs, the pre-show has always been one of my favorite parts. It is a true honor to be hosting from the black carpet this year,” Gomez said in a statement. Gomez will get some help from Cobra Starship, who will perform their dance hit “You Make Me Feel,” featuring Sabi, live during the VMA Pre-Show, which will also include an exclusive new teaser of “Jersey Shore.” “We are so excited to be a part of the 2011 VMAs! I grew up watching them every year and it was an honor to be nominated two years ago and it is an even bigger honor to be able to play the pre-show this year,” said Cobra Starship guitarist Ryland Blackinton. “I will never forget when Pat Smear left the Foo Fighters live during the pre-show, and I’m planning on having him replace me this year.” While Gomez is meeting and greeting the celebs on the black carpet, MTV News correspondents will bring you interviews with some of today’s hottest stars.
