Joran van der Sloot was sentenced to 28 years for the murder of Stephany Flores, but the killer is hoping to win an appeal and shorten that time dramatically. “He is appealing his sentence and hopes he gets parole in less than five years,” an insider revealed , meaning he could walk out a free man as soon as 2017. He hasn’t won anything yet, but that would be a fraction of the sentence that was handed to him on January 13 after he confessed to the May 2010 killing. The 24-year-old Dutchman’s lawyer, Jose Luis Jimenez, filed an appeal last week claiming that the three judges did not take into account his plea of guilty. After being transferred from a more lenient Castro Castro prison to the maximum security Piedras Gordas, Joran has experienced several health problems: “His health has suffered and he is not doing well there. Joran blames the food and the water, he says that he is depressed and feeling weak all the time.” Hearts are weeping around the world, no doubt. Joran’s home is considered one of the harshest places in the Peru, but many observers likely feel that even a full sentence at Piedras Gordas is not long enough. He is, after all, the prime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, who went missing in 2005. She was declared legally dead earlier this month.

The U.S. Marines Corps has reportedly identified all four of the men in the now-infamous video in which they appear to be urinating on dead Taliban bodies. All are reportedly part of a sniper team based in North Carolina. The four belong to 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, which returned to the U.S.A. last fall after a tour in Afghanistan. Of the 1,000-person battalion, seven were killed in action. So far, the names of the men have not been released . Marines Urinating on Dead Bodies CBS News reports that the Marines urinating in the video had been showing off the video as a “war trophy” at their home base in Camp Lejeune in N.C. At least two of the Marines have been interviewed by USMC officials, but are not being detained as of right now. It is unclear what disciplinary action they may face. A rep for the White House said this morning that President Barack Obama is aware of the video, but would not say if he has actually seen it yet. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, among many, many others in the past 24 hours, has condemned the video, calling the action “deplorable behavior.”

Could this “unnamed” opponent be Manny Pacquiao??? “Money” Mayweather was supposed to turn himself in yesterday to begin his 90-day jail sentence, however… A judge agreed Friday to postpone a jail sentence against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a Las Vegas domestic violence case, allowing the undefeated boxer to make a Cinco de Mayo fight against an as-yet unnamed opponent. The ruling by Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa to allow Mayweather to begin his 90-day stint on June 1 came with the fighter’s manager and supporters, including rap star Lil’ Kim and R&B artist Ray J, in the courtroom as a defense lawyer cited the economic boost that Las Vegas could get from the bout. Mayweather, meanwhile, waited in the lobby of a nearby building to hear whether Saragosa would make him immediately begin serving the three-month sentence she imposed when the boxing champion pleaded guilty last month to a charge that he attacked his ex-girlfriend while two of their children watched in September 2010. Saragosa said she was swayed by the last-minute plea from Mayweather’s lawyer, Richard Wright, to let Mayweather postpone jail time so he can train to fight on the May 5 date his promoters promised months ago to pay-per-view television and the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Wright said Mayweather wasn’t trying to avoid the sentence, and emphasized the potential economic benefit of attracting fight fans and hotel guests to Las Vegas for a Mayweather fight. The lawyer estimated that Mayweather’s last seven fights in Las Vegas generated a combined $1 billion in business to the community. He projected the economic boost from a May 5 fight at more than $100 million. Guess being a part of the #TheMoneyTeam has its’ advantages… “Mr. Mayweather has an obligation to this court,” the judge responded. But “given the fact that Mr. Mayweather has these obligations, I am going to grant your request.” Prosecutor Lisa Luzaich protested that Mayweather should have to serve his sentence “just like anyone else.” Saragosa ordered Mayweather to immediately enroll in a yearlong domestic violence counseling program, and noted that under her original sentence, Mayweather faces an additional three months in jail if he doesn’t comply. Mayweather also must complete 100 hours of community service and pay a $2,500 fine. Guess money can buy happiness, or at least freedom… Hate it or love it???
