Is it too late? Folks have had enough of “Basketball Wives” making a mockery of black women on TV and Shaunie O’Neal, Vh1 and Shed Media are now making promises that may be hard to keep — no more physical violence on the show. We know Jen must be relieved she won’t be getting smacked on camera anymore! Peep the full statements below. From Shaunie O’Neal: “This has definitely been a heated season. “Basketball Wives” is filled with a lot of strong personalities with months, weeks, days and hours condensed into about 45 minutes each episode. Unfortunately, a lot of these personalities have clashed and let their opinions and emotions overwhelm them which has at times gotten the best of them, escalating into physical confrontations. As this group has been blessed with strong, smart, independent, sassy women with as much passion as vocabulary, there’s NO excuse for physical violence. So the cast, SHED Media and Vh1 have done a gut check, to stop allowing physical violence demoralize the show and impose a no-physical violence policy. Personally, I almost didn’t come back to the show but I thought it was important for this to be said as some of the past actions this season I have not agreed with, it’s not what I stand for and never have. So moving forward, we have agreed to better the show, still with plenty of drama and fun (how can we help that?!) but with a more responsible attitude all around. This is important for me specifically as an executive and what I do and don’t attach my name to, as a grown woman, and as a positive role model to my kids. “ Nice — but how much fun has this season really been? Especially for poor Jen? Here’s the statement from SHED Media: “Shed Media US is fully committed to telling the compelling stories of the Basketball Wives in a balanced way. Our producing partner Shaunie O’Neal feels strongly about this, and we fully agree with this stance. We support her as she encourages the cast members to work out issues in a non-violent fashion,” reports Shed. “We look forward to working with her and the rest of the cast on conveying more balance in the next season.” And this is what Vh1 had to say: “Lately, there has been a lot of conversation about Basketball Wives, a series featuring strong, intelligent women with very passionate viewpoints which can sometimes escalate. We at VH1 agree with and support Shaunie and the show producers’ “no excessive physical confrontations” policy on the series moving forward,” reports VH1. “We are all committed to balancing the candid, bold excitement that the viewers have come to love in the series with storylines and representations they can be proud of.” Is it too little, too late? And do you even believe them? Continue reading →
‘The Houston Family Chronicles,’ which will feature Bobbi Kristina Brown and Cissy Houston, premieres on Lifetime later this year. By John Mitchell Whitney Houston and her daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage A new reality series featuring the family of late pop superstar Whitney Houston will premiere on Lifetime later this year, the network announced in a statement Friday (May 11). Titled “The Houston Family Chronicles,” the show will feature Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, and mother Cissy Houston, though the focus will be on “The Bodyguard” superstar’s brother Gary Houston and sister-in-law and manager Pat Houston, as well as their daughter, Rayah. Houston’s cousin Dionne Warwick and Bobbie Kristina’s godmother, gospel legend CeCe Winans, will also appear in the series. According to Lifetime, the reality show will focus on Pat and Gary “as they take on their greatest challenge, supporting and guiding Bobbi Kristina as she faces the world alone, without the one person she relied on the most, her mother.” Whitney Houston died on February 11 of this year at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The L.A. County coroner ruled that accidental drowning was the official cause of Houston’s death, adding that cocaine use and heart disease were contributing factors. The report indicated traces of cocaine were found in Houston’s system at the time of death along with Xanax, Flexeril, marijuana and Benadryl, though officials said these substances played no role in her untimely passing. “The tragic loss of Whitney Houston left a void in the hearts of people all over the world, but certainly none more so than her beloved family,” Rob Sharenow, executive vice president of programming at Lifetime Networks, said in a statement. “In this series, the multi-generations of the Houston family will bravely reveal their lives as they bond together to heal, love, and grow.” Lifetime has ordered 10 hour-long episodes of “The Houston Family Chronicles” and will premiere the show at a yet-undetermined time later this year. According to Pat Houston, the show had been in the works well before Whitney’s death. “I have been working with Simmons-Shelley [production company] over the past few years developing a project suitable for myself and our family,” Pat Houston said. “The unexpected passing of Whitney certainly affects the direction of the show. However, it is my hope that others will be enlightened as they watch our family heal and move forward.” Will you watch “The Houston Family Chronicles”? Let us know in the comments below. It’s all fun and games until someone pulls a piece on a paparazzo. As we previously reported, Pippa Middleton is at the center of a gun scandal after she and her friends went for a spin in a convertible last weekend. After partying at a raucous bash in Paris until 5 a.m., Pips was spotted leaving in a car with friends, when the driver took out what appeared to be a semi-automatic pistol and aimed it at a celebrity news photographer. But was the gun even real? Sitting in the passenger seat, Pippa Middleton laughed. Nobody’s laughing now. Especially not her in-laws. “This is embarrassing for them,” a royal source says. The surprising scandal “has put [ Kate Middleton ] in a very difficult position,” the source adds. However, it appears that the excitement, which included reports that Pippa Middleton could face criminal charges, may have been overblown. ABC News reports that the photographer claims he knew all along that the gun was a fake and has been telling people he never felt scared by it. Even friends of one of the young fashionistas in the car with Pippa told ABC News that they have the toy gun in their possession currently. The Sun reported that the Paris Police are “poised” to launch a probe, but there is no investigation …. because no one has filed a complaint. Pippa Middleton Gun Photo The mystery man pointing the gun in question, meanwhile, has finally been identified: He’s Romain Rabillard, a 36-year-old French attorney. The single Rabillard parties with a crowd of chic Parisians, including wealthy clothing designer Viscount Arthur de Soultrait, Middleton’s pal. It was his 30th birthday bash she attended Friday. If the gun was in fact fake, the accused could still face legal action, but far less severe.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are engaged, as you now know. For real. OK! Magazine and its ilk are either overjoyed that they get to print accurate news for once in their lives this week, or devastated because now that Brangelina got engaged , and confirmed it, they’ve lost some great source material. Either way, here’s their very special commemorative cover : “Yes, it’s confirmed. It is a promise for the future and their kids are all very happy,” Brad’s manager Cynthia Pett-Dante confirmed to the AP last week. “There’s not date set at this time.” That’s it. No more waiting for gay marriage to be legalized all over the world. No more coy interviews. No more ridiculous tabloid cover story lies. Okay, those are clearly going to persist. But they’ll have to branch out, because the secret wedding well has finally run dry. It was a good run, guys.
Earlier this week, Courtney Stodden encouraged fans to eat their vegetables and then jumped rope for a bit . But the 17-year old apparently has a lot more to say and she’s doing it YouTube style, as she and sketchy husband Doug Hutchinson could not find a network to air their proposed reality show. So in the first edition of the couple’s Web series (titled “Courtney’s Countdown” because it will air up until Stodden turns 18 in August, at which time we’re guessing she and Hutchinson will star in a different sort of video…), we watch as Stodden whines about her injured foot to both her man and her mom. It’s riveting stuff. You won’t be able to look away: Courtney Stodden Web Series: Episode 1
Here’s a last bit of breezy entertainment as you head into the weekend: The first trailer for Miami-set dance sequel Step Up 4 , AKA Step Up: Revolution , in which a new pair of star-crossed lovers leads their crew into syncopated battle against prejudice rival gangs foreclosure evil land developers. This series has wound a long, glossy path since the days of Channing Tatum b-boying in the parking lot, but hey: It’s a new Step Up movie! As long as that Moose kid and Madd Chadd show up, I’m good to go. Of course, Jon M. Chu has moved on from the Step Up films to helm the G.I. Joe sequel (Chu directed the second and third installments of the series, making the franchise a hit) but he remains a producer with music video veteran Scott Speer in the director’s chair . (Speer previously directed the “Duet” episode of Chu’s online dance series The LXD , which inspires some faith in his eye for movement and storytelling.) My biggest hangup about Step Up 4 , however, isn’t that the two new leads, Kathryn McCormick and Ryan Guzman, are unknown — following in Step Up tradition — or that the trailer is almost too-slick looking, or that dancers on pogo legs don’t really do much for me. It’s that flash mobs are so tired already; once Justin Timberlake used them to woo Mila Kunis last year and Howie Mandel hosted a reality TV show about real people springing grandiose flash mob-gestures upon their estranged loved ones, I was kind of done with them. Also: What is Peter Gallagher doing in this movie playing the evil real estate developer who will threaten to dash the community’s dreams before being defeated by the power of dance?? He was in Center Stage 1 AND 2! YOU’RE ONLY ALLOWED TO BE IN ONE DANCE FRANCHISE, OTHERWISE THE UNIVERSE IMPLODES!!! Verdict: Seems like a missed opportunity to open Step Up 4 in 4-D, but I’ll give it a whirl anyway because yes, I am a sucker for these movies. Step Up: Revolution Against Peter Gallagher opens in theaters July 27.
