Golden Globe Awards 2012: List of Winners!

Did the 2012 Golden Globe winners go according to plan? Or were there any big surprises? Are the Oscar favorites more or less cemented right now? The Help, The Artist, The Descendants and Hugo proved they are early Oscar leaders, with each film taking home some hardware Sunday evening. The Artist ’s wins for Best Score and Best Actor for Jean Dujardin kept the critical favorite squarely in the driver’s seat as an early Oscar favorite. After winning Best Actor for The Descendants , George Clooney is the man to beat for the honor at the Oscars. That film was also the best drama. Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical went to The Artist , while Meryl Streep won Best Actress (shocker) as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady . The Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement went to Morgan Freeman (above), who received the honor from Sidney Poitier and Helen Mirren. On the TV side, Homeland, Modern Family and Downton Abbey were the big winners. Kicking off the night was a Ricky Gervais monologue that went after stars such as Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian this year. So … there’s that. Katy Perry Gets Over A Bad Boy On Leaked Track

Demo for the Jessie James tune hits the Net shortly after Russell Brand files for divorce from Perry. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry and Russell Brand Photo: Eric Ryan/ Getty Images Katy Perry and Russell Brand have been keeping low profiles since Friday’s divorce announcement, but on a brand-new song that just hit the Net, Perry sings about falling for the wrong guy. The song, which Perry co-wrote, is actually a demo version of the Jessie James track “Bullet.” While the song has many country music flourishes thanks to twangy guitars, the lyrics — minus references to cowboy boots and country accents — work for Perry. She opens with the lines: “My mama warned me about boys like you/ It’s the reason I wear these high-heeled boots/ And let me give you a little piece of advice/ My papa packs heat and he won’t think twice.” And the song’s big chorus is signature Perry. On the sing-along refrain, Perry belts out, “I’m a bullet and I’m headed/ Straight for your heart/ Be careful what you start/ I’m a bullet and I’m headed/ Straight for your heart/ It’s gonna leave a mark.” Although the song eventually landed on James’ 2009 self-titled debut, the timing of the leak coincides with the news of Perry’s split from comedian Brand after a little more than a year. Brand was spotted in his native England on Saturday, one day after the news broke of their breakup, while Perry, who has yet to speak about the split, is slated to perform at two concerts this month: one on January 19 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and another on January 22 in Manila, in the Philippines. When MTV News spoke to some experts about Perry and Brand’s breakup , they noted that the divorce didn’t come as a surprise to them. “From the get-go, I thought they were a sort of odd, mismatched pair,” David Caplan, a celebrity news editor who has worked at publications including People and Star, told us. “She’s so glamorous, pop and sexy, and he is diametrically not like that. He’s a nice and funny guy, and from my encounters with her, I found her to be funny, have a sarcastic edge and a blast, but they weren’t a match. Plus, she’s more of a partier than he now, so their lifestyles were at odds.” What do you think of Katy and Russell’s decision to divorce? Tell us what you think on our Facebook page. ‘Paranormal Activity 4’ Confirmed by Paramount

Despite low budgets, each film has made more than $80 million in the U.S. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with additional reporting by Eric Ditzian A scene from “Paranormal Activity 3” Photo: Paramount Pictures After the third installment made just under $108 million in the U.S. alone, few could really doubt that a “Paranormal Activity 4” would be here just in time for Halloween 2012. The found-footage series has become Paramount’s yearly sure-thing, since the low-budget thrillers each has earned more than $80 million domestically. “Paranormal Activity 3” played a key role in securing Paramount’s spot as the top-earning studio of 2011, so when the studio casually unveiled plans for the next installment during their victory-lap press release, it almost went unnoticed. ShockTillYouDrop.com was among the first to catch the mention of “Paranormal 4” in the press release which read: “In 2012, Paramount’s release slate highlights include ‘World War Z,’ a zombie thriller starring Brad Pitt and directed by Marc Forster, ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation,’ the next installment in the global franchise starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Channing Tatum, a new chapter in the ‘Paranormal Activity’ franchise, and ‘The Dictator,’ starring Sacha Baron Cohen and directed by Larry Charles, the team behind ‘Borat.'” “Paranormal 3,” directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, took the series into the past, looking at what could be considered the series’ origins story. While the story explained why the demon had such a liking for the sisters, Katie and Kristi, it left many of the questions from the modern-day “Paranormal 2” unanswered. As for whether Joost and Schulman would return for a second round of directing, the team told MTV News they were open to it. “I had a blast. I’d do it again,” Schulman said. Joost joked that they’d take the series even further into the past. “We have some ideas. It’s going to be just drawings — calligraphy and watercolors. And set in the 1800s.” Are you going to see “Paranormal Activity 4” this year? Let us know in the comments! All-American Muslim: TLC Show Draws Fire For 9/11 Episode

TLC’s latest reality show All-American Muslim, which follows the lives of contemporary U.S. Muslim households, is (not surprisingly) drawing criticism from many. But is it warranted? An upcoming episode focused on the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and how the show’s cast members feel about them, ignited a firestorm of controversy. All-American Muslim Trailer The episode airs Sunday, but the series first attracted attention earlier this month when a conservative Christian group called on advertisers to boycott the series. Some critics call All-American Muslim “propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda’s clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values.” Home improvement chain Lowe’s and travel planning site Kayak (dot) com announced they were pulling ads, which led to backlash against the companies. Filming for the controversial reality TV series took place during commemorations for the 10th anniversary of the attacks this September, heightening tensions. Both TLC and the Muslims it depicts, which live in and around Dearborn, Mich., wanted to address the topic. How do you think their message will be received?

‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’: Why It Didn’t Dominate

Experts explain to MTV News why the best-selling book didn’t translate to a box-office #1. By Eric Ditzian Rooney Mara in “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium” trilogy of crime thrillers has sold about 17 million copies in the United States alone. The first novel in the series, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” is the first book ever to sell a million digital copies. The books have become nothing short of cultural touchstones, the collective response of devoted fans to the uninitiated being something along the lines of “You haven’t read ‘Dragon Tattoo’? What’s wrong with you?” That’s the entertainment scene onto which David Fincher’s American adaptation of “Dragon Tattoo” came last week. What’s more, the movie received strong critical reviews , Sony’s marketing campaign was lauded by industry insiders and MTV named it the Best Movie of 2011 . Yet “Dragon Tattoo” wound up with a six-day gross of just $27.8 million — the highest total of any new release but good for just fourth place overall and undoubtedly disappointing given its lofty pedigree. So what happened? “Maybe fans of the Stieg Larsson novel were satisfied by last year’s Swedish film and weren’t feeling David Fincher’s Hollywood version,” writes Deadline editor in chief Nikki Finke, who notes the weak opening is especially surprising given the film was the only rated-R wide-release over the Christmas season and that “adults are flocking to specialty box-office hits like Fox Searchlight’s ‘The Descendants’ and the Weinstein Co’s ‘The Artist.’ ” The release date could also have been a factor, even as Sony positioned “Dragon Tattoo” as the “feel-bad movie of Christmas.” “The dark and violent subject matter coupled with intense competition for the attention of mature adults led to an underwhelming result over the happy and cheery yuletide holiday,” says Gitesh Pandya, editor of Box Office Guru . With no wide releases slated for the upcoming weekend, however, “Dragon Tattoo” could see its box-office haul grow significantly. Sony’s distribution chief, Rory Bruer, told TheWrap that the film “is off to a good start and it’s just going to get better with every day through the rest of the holiday season and well into the new year.” Finke, too, expects the film’s B.O. numbers to pick up this week, and Pandya suggests “a domestic final of $100 million cannot be ruled out this early in the run as moviegoers continue to catch up on films they are interested in.” That’s good news for fans of the series and of Fincher’s film, who have their fingers crossed that the Oscar-nominated director gets the go-ahead to make the final two pictures in Larsson’s series. As Fincher told us recently , he hopes that the first film is received well enough that he’s able to revisit, in journalist Mikael Blomkvist and hacker Lisbeth Salander, “two fascinating characters who I have really come to care about.” In the end, though, the chance to see Fincher’s adaptations of “The Girl Who Played With Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest” might be entirely out of the hands — or, rather, the wallets — of American moviegoers. “Ironically, the biggest factor in this sequelizing or not will come down to how well it does in foreign market — a place where the Swedish version of the film already made nearly $100 million just a couple years ago,” said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “Do overseas audiences really want to see the Hollywood version after the original is so fresh in their minds and was equally well-received?” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Matt Damon: Jeremy Renner ‘Obvious Choice’ For ‘Bourne Legacy’

‘He’s such a good actor and can carry a movie,’ actor tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jeremy Renner Photo: Getty Images In August, when “The Bourne Legacy” opens in theaters, the man behind Jason Bourne, Matt Damon , won’t be anywhere in sight. At least that’s what the actor says. Damon sat down with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz while promoting his new film, “We Bought a Zoo,” and he insisted he had no part in the fourth “Bourne” movie. “No, I’m not in that one. I haven’t even read the script,” he said. But as a key component of the series, Damon was able to give his take on how “Legacy,” which is being directed by Tony Gilroy, fits in with the previous three films. “My understanding is that it’s like if you think of ‘X-Men’ and then ‘Wolverine,’ the spin-off movie, just think of it in reverse,” he explained. “There’s the Bourne character, and then there’s this whole world. It doesn’t preclude [director] Paul Greengrass and I from doing another [‘Bourne’ movie].” Damon had spoken with the star of “Bourne Legacy,” Jeremy Renner , briefly, but he insisted the conversation didn’t have much to do with the series. “We didn’t really talk about the movie much. I’m just a huge fan of his,” Damon said. When Damon and Greengrass — who directed the second and third “Bourne” films — met to move forward with the series after “Ultimatum,” Renner was a topic of conversation. “When Paul Greengrass and I were talking about the character and maybe doing a fourth one a couple years ago and maybe passing it off to somebody, Renner was the guy we talked about. He’s an obvious choice, because he’s such a good actor and can carry a movie,” he said. For Damon, the “Bourne” movies strike a difficult balance that he feels Renner can successfully handle. “Those movies are really tough, because you need the guy to be internally tortured about something, and Jeremy’s the kind of guy you could watch,” Damon said. “You could remove the action and watch Jeremy just angst over something for two hours, and it could be really compelling.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Bourne Legacy.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Dark Shadows’: Johnny Depp, Vampires, Spooky First Looks In 2011

We relive the best moments of the year as production on Tim Burton’s 2012 adaptation finally kicked off. By John Mitchell Tim Burton and Johnny Depp in production for “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures This year, filming finally began on director Tim Burton’s long -in-the-works big-screen adaptation of “Dark Shadows,” a campy, late-1960s soap opera about vampires, witches and time travel. Burton is a lifelong fan of the series and, as his partner Helena Bonham Carter told MTV News this month, “This was a thing that he raced home to see when he was about age 10.” With its atmospheric New England setting and myriad mysterious characters, “Shadows” has the feel of a classic Burton film, more akin to his “Sleepy Hollow” and “Batman” flicks than his more candy-colored efforts like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” And Burton at his dark and spooky best, working on a passion project, is something to get excited about. Production began on “Shadows” at Pinewood Studios outside of London in May. The director lined up a dream cast — from Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer to Chloe Moretz and Jackie Earle Haley, not a single part appears miscast. And while Burton has kept the film under lock and key, paparazzi did catch a fleeting glimpse of Depp during production, which briefly became cause for worry among some fans of the series. The shot of Depp in character as Barnabus Collins, wearing heavy white makeup walking down a seaside hill, found its way online in mid-September and was derided by fans as being too cartoonish, too reminiscent of Depp’s styling in Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.” Based on those initial images, the world Burton looked to be creating seemed to have little in common with the Gothic aesthetic established in the soap. Concerns were alleviated, however, when just a week later, Entertainment Weekly debuted the first official image from the film. Through Burton’s lens (and some creepy filters), Depp’s makeup took on the undead-but-oddly alluring look you’d expect from a traditional vampire movie. The rest of the cast captured the feel of their TV counterparts too: Pfeiffer looked regal and sullen as family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard; Johnny Lee Miller’s smarm as Roger Collins was apparent; and Bonham Carter looked every bit the orange-haired, eccentric “alcoholic psychiatrist,” Dr. Julia Hoffman. Of the film, Moretz, who plays Carolyn Stoddard, had this to say when talking to MTV News last month: “It straddles the typical Burton line: camp and drama. It’s an amazing movie. Going in and working on this movie with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter — it really does get back to Tim’s roots. It gets back to ‘Beetlejuice,’ ‘Edward Scissorhands,’ back to true Burton . So working on this movie was epic for me because he’s always been my dream director to work with because, god, he’s so iconic.” Moretz’s “Shadows” co-stars share the love for Burton. Pfeiffer , who worked with the director on 1992’s”Batman Returns,” described work on the new film as a “dream job.” “[It is] such a fun cast and we had so much fun. I just love working with Tim [Burton], I love watching him direct. [There’s] nobody like him,” she told MTV News. “I loved meeting Helena and getting to know her. I hope it’s successful so that we can do a bunch of them because it was such a fantastic, creative group of people.” Hopefully, that on-set camaraderie and excitement will help “Shadows” fulfill fans’ high expectations. The original soap spanned some 1,225 episodes, so there’s plenty of plot for sequels if Pfeiffer gets her wish. While we’re still waiting for a trailer for the May 11, 2012, release (come on, Tim, give us something!), what we’ve seen so far gives us faith that Burton and Co. are getting it all exactly right! Tom Cruise Reflects On ‘M:I’ At ‘Ghost Protocol’ Debut

Actor also gives MTV News a Les Grossman update at Dubai premiere. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Tom Cruise at the Dubai premiere of “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” Photo: MTV News After four “Mission: Impossible” films, Tom Cruise has seen his fair share of action sequences as special agent Ethan Hunt. So many of the series’ famous set pieces come to mind almost instantly: infiltrating Langley in “Mission: Impossible,” climbing a rock face freestyle in “M:I 2” and now the stunt outside Dubai’s Khalifa Tower in “Ghost Protocol.” When MTV News’ Josh Horowitz caught up with Cruise at the latest film’s premiere in Dubai, he asked the actor which famous action sequences he looks back on with the most fondness. “It’s hard to say, because each one has been so different, and each had different kinds of challenges,” Cruise said. But few will deny that the iconic rappel into the heart of CIA headquarters is the series’ defining moment. Cruise recalled the challenges he had filming that scene. He credits director Brian De Palma for the scene’s success. “I remember when I was doing it, my head kept hitting the floor. … I was running out of energy, and we were running out of time,” Cruise said. De Palma said if they didn’t get the stunt on the next take he would be forced to pull it off with tricky editing. “To one of the stunt guys, I said, ‘Give me your pound coins out of your pocket,’ ” Cruise said. “I put the pound coins in my shoes, the tips, so that’s what allowed me to be able to balance and keep off the floor for that whole shot. That kept my face from hitting the floor.” That wasn’t the end of it, though. Cruise needed to maintain that position for the rest of the take. “De Palma knew that we had the shot, and he just held it and held it. I was like, ‘How long can I hold off the floor?’ Brian had a fantastic laugh, and then he said, ‘All right, cut.’ ” One of the projects Cruise has been attached to for a while is the long-gestating “Tropic Thunder” spin-off for his scene-stealing character Les Grossman . There have been no signs of progress toward production, so Cruise updated us on its status. “It’s not where we all want it to be,” Cruise said, suggesting that Internet shorts may be the way to go. “[Les Grossman] is so much fun to do. There are all different kinds of things we’re thinking about.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
